  • We had the privilege of spending a significant slice of time at CEDIA 2023 with Geoffrey Heinzel, co-managing partner of the planet's most intriguing speaker manufacturer, Ascendo. The company crafts a complete line of loudspeakers, subwoofers, and gnarly infrasonic subwoofers that make home theater dreams come true.

I’m confused about the infrasonic mumbo jumbo.
I got a 18” Stereo Integrity in an enclosure tuned to 17Hz and shakes my body down to 10hz. Don’t need anything special or fancy. By nature, anything lower than 25Hz will start to have delay which is inevitable without a dsp etc.
    🤷🏻‍♂️

Not sure what you mean; ... by nature lower than 25hz has inevitable delay
But as I understand, our perception of non-linearities down low in freq isn't as critical or significant as non-linearities higher up into the upper bass region and higher.

@@FOH3663 A local guy has 18,000 watts feeding 6 32 inch subwoofers in his home theater, 2 on each side of the screen and 2 in the rear, his subs are flat down to 5hz as they're infinite baffle. your whole body MOVES when infrasonics come through

      Nice!
I too have single digit extension.
I've got a quad 18" IB, supplemented by four sealed 15"s, and dual 12"s in my mains, I'm down with full bandwidth playback.

10hz and lower is where infrasonics are harder to duplicate. I have videos here and on tictok getting down to 1hz with good pressure. I also have music that's been rebass edited to play from 3hz up.
And it gets windy. Like float a pillow in the window windy.

One thing I don't get is if they're concerned about the pistonic acceleartion, why increase cone area, why not use more smaller drivers?
The larger the driver the higher the stress in the material meaning more materail is needed to create enough rigidity.
Sort of like steel beams across a span, the larger the span the larger the beam.

I think it must be due to two factors (the first is the most important): In order to move a certain mass of air to vibrate it at very low frequencies, the transducer must have a minimum size necessary according to how low it will reproduce to have a higher performance (dB SPL); and a larger cone size results in a larger suspended weight, which also helps to tune the driver at lower frequencies.
Of course, with a larger and heavier suspended weight, the difficulty of the sub's motor to control it increases considerably. The easiest tactic to increase pistonic acceleration and cone control is to reinforce the coil and stiffen the spider and, in some products, the surround itself - all this work so that the sub can handle working at high power regimes and, thus, increasing its capacity to accelerate and decelerate the suspended weight. However, this tactic can cause power compression in the coil due to the Joule effect and leave the frequency response of the transducer with one, two or more peaks where it will perform better and entire regions where the performance will be ridiculous.
Hence the importance of a good cabinet for the bass speaker, subwoofer and infrasonic transducers to increase the control of the driver's cone. There are drivers that will only perform satisfactorily in sealed boxes and others that can only work in vented boxes. Most of these subs with large cone areas are mounted in sealed boxes. Sealed boxes (or acoustic suspension enclosures) are a good way to keep the sub's cone under some control, often complementing what the driver's surround and spider or even the magnetic assembly are not capable of doing if it were mounted in a simple ducted box or other models of vented boxes.

What is the distance from the rear seat to the back wall?
Also, what are the dimensions of the room?

We need to create a video showing how many people walk in front of the camera during interviews... you'd be surprised at how often it happens! Lots get covered up by B-roll... you gotta take it all with a smile and keep the humor of the situation at the forefront. ;-)
