You might be the best "real world" timber cutter on RUclips. I use semi-chisel chain, the full chisel cuts better but like you said, it needs more sharpening and it gets hurt easily by dirt. I don't like the anti-kickback chain because for me it's a bear to bore cut with. I just can't bore with low kickback. Too, it's a bit harder to file the drags down as you file your chain teeth down. It's safer chain for newer chainsaw users but slower overall. My opinion. And amen to the comments about walnuts being brittle. I've seen forked-top trees bust in half all the way down the trunk as they hit the ground. I don't mind landing a forked walnut on a small tree on the way down, just to bleed away some of the falling energy. The tops do split super easy when making firewood. I call my walnut firewood my "fancy wood". Keep those videos coming!
Hey, thank you! I run full chisel for felling and working in the woods. I’m going to run this round tooth for bucking these walnut logs. Yeah if the math is right we’ll have the fancy trees topped. It’s gotta be a hell of a tree to be worth that though. Stay safe out there!
I agree. You have a unique perspective of logging and an interesting channel. I see this channel blowing up over the next couple years. Your content is high quality and exactly what people into logging want to see. Keep on not letting those comments bug you but also letting viewers know when their "advice" is idiotic. That's how we all get better and stay safe. Big fan from the finger lakes!
Am thrilled you have a bunch of timber bought up. Hope the market holds. Money in the bank. Thank you for the great videos, again you are a true professional!
You are an expert on cutting those Walnuts Down. Yes that Timber Jack is an excellent Log Skidder. My I used to Deer Hunt had One. I helped him Cut many Oak Trees at 1 time. He did 10 Thousand Board Feet, of Oak 1 year. I am getting out about 2times a Week Cutting some. Still get very Tired but slowly coming along. I do think you are using the Stihl Picco Super 3 Chain, (PS3). You stay Safe out there my Friend and as Always a Great Video. ( PS- ONLY ABOUT 2.5 MONTHS TO GO TILL I AM BACK TO MY OLD SELF) Ron from the Woodyard in Duanesburg NY. . .
Great set of trees. You can cut those things scrazy fast. I do have a question. Curious why you cut them off the ground so far? I am wondering if I am trying to cut too low. Do you feel that you cut much more in less time by clipping them higher as opposed to cutting them right at ground level? I would give anything to cut trees like those. Our trees are big bushy tops with a lot of limbing. I got 18 down and limbed today. Thats a HUGE day for me.
Awesome in the 18 trees, be safe. As far as the height of your stump, there are factors to take to consider. It’s easy to say to an inexperienced cutter to flush cut everything but if you’re trying to get fast you need to be able to read the tree. If you know logs, then the tree will tell you where to cut it. Let me know if this makes sense.
Have you used the semi chisel chain yet? Curious if you like it? I absolutely hate the anti-kick chain. I screwed up and got one. If you dont like the semi chisel. Don't give up on it until you get one without the anti kickback.
I did use it. It was fine but a pain to take the rakers down. I will run it to buck logs in the future but I will buy the regular semi. I can’t believe they sent me anti kickback chain.
Semi-chisel chains are mostly used for slabbing by folks around these parts...it apparently runs slower but also dulls slower than the full-chisel.I'm sure it will be great for bucking dirty logs, but i'm waiting for a feedback from You on that subject.Anyway - great video as always, thanx for sharing !
'Bout to buy my first big saw (592). Trying to decide on which size bar for all-around. For my purposes, I do have a few trees to horizontal cut to fall those trees, but I also have roughly the same amount of bucking them up after I drop them. (I say 'same amount' because once the large limbs are cut, I can switch to the 16" Milwaukee to finish all the small stuff). As such, I think it looks like that *28" bar* balances out that big 'ol 592 nicely: Not too long [32"-36"] to where it's awkward swinging it back and forth, but not too short [20"-24"] to where you have to bend over too much to buck anything. Anybody got any thoughts on that?
I like these, man. I’m a firewood guy, and I run this on my “grubbing” saw, little 445. They stay sharp long and cut fast, can confirm, but that anti-kickback plate sucks because it’s a lot of material to file down on the rakers. Destroys files faster.
Depends on how ya look at it. I definitely think true veneer will stay great. I think the Chinese veneer market will receed until the fall like every other year. As far as walnut the lumber is so high it will make up for most of your Chinese veneer problems.
Love that black gold. Such nice wood. I use a 390 husky and me personally I don't like the anti kickback chains. They just don't pull good through the tree.
I've been contracted by a logger to climb and top several dozen big walnuts over the past few months. He's willing to pay $200-$350 per tree to get it down to the main union with no chance of breaking
I prefer semi-chisel on the landing. MUCH more durable and cuts damn near as fast. I find it easier to sharpen as the angle of the working corner isn’t as critical because it’s radius.
I am in my 60 did tree work my whole life my dad and uncle cut timber every winter there is a big difference in the two trades I done some timber work with my dad and uncle both are very dangerous jobs was on a timber job with my uncle I was in my 30 he was 72 and he lost his foot one day after thanksgiving I never did timber work again
Losin a foot isn’t a reason to quit logging. I always kinda though if your not a amputee your kinda a 🐱. I’m just kidding around we joke about around saying that if ya haven’t been airlifted or became a amputee then your a….. It’s a rewarding business but it has a few dangers.
I myself don't like the anti-kickback chains, I can't describe what it is but it doesn't feel right when I'm cutting with one. My saws don't cut quite the same.
Its hard to hand file the anti kickback chains til they're down to the nubs. I know you said you hand yours off to your ol man when they get so far. Probably wont fight you much but your ol man might need to use a bench grinder to get it to cut straight. Those rakers are difficult to keep consistent. I prefer full skip for bucking and firewood so sharpening isnt such a bitch in the woods.
How about, giving us YOUR opinion of the Humbolt for those trees with a stupid big flared base in them. I understand that where you’re “generally” logging that it not a helicopter world like where the Humbolt cut was developed, but why in the hell do those things have such a prescience on RUclips for what seems like “all of a sudden”?
Humboldt isn’t used on hardwood due to the waste involved. I think a lot of guys put on a costume and go to the woods and play logger on RUclips. That’s were I see a lot of Humboldt action.
Dudes on here talking about tearing up other trees have either never been on a log job or part of the reclaim crew putting straw on road slopes and landings
So what I like about your channel is that you seem to be a no nonsens guy and you don‘t make a big fuss about nothing. You just log and film and that‘s it. But let me ask you one question: you seem to be a Husquarna guy. But your bars all seem to be Stihl. Why that? Greetings from Bavaria
Stihl bars are a little better than Oregon(husqvarna) bars and plenty cheap. For falling I run tsumara which I think are the best for the money. Glad you like the channel.

Give me a week and I’ll know for sure
I saw a couple hackberries. Do you cut them and what do you use it for?
I do not cut them, no value.
I saw some hackberry trees in those woods, do they have any commercial value?
No, they make pallets but it’s not worth cutting them .

Right on, I wouldn’t use for felling but for bucking muddy logs I think it could be a winner.
Nice little skidder you got! Ever try using carbide chains? I get a ton of life out of them and they hold a solid edge even through some dirt
I tried once they don’t work for my application.
Dam nice saw wall sir 💯.❤
Thank you!
That ground must hold a lot of moisture.

That small jack is a lot easier to get on and off of compared to them john deeres😊
Absolutely, way better on the knees!!!
I believe they're called bump drives, usually only see it on saws 50cc and under! I'm sure you'll be able get it to cut fast enough!
I’m sure if ya sharpen it, it will eat.

@@Good.Fellers your welcome
Has to be THE SHARPEST chain on the TUBE1
RAZOR
Why would you not cut a Notch?
It wasn’t needed
The notch I am assuming in this conversation would create a hinge which would create problems coming off the stump on smaller trees like this.
White oak and walnut is about the only thing that has a market right now
It’s the only thing that had a consistent market for over a decade.

If that’s a Detroit, that’s one of the quietest ones I’ve ever heard.
It’s got the stock muffler
And it works pretty good for a Detroit
I had a suped up 353 with straight pipe and that thing could be heard for 10+ miles
Semi chisel chain is okay but slower cutting and holds edge longer due to not having the point
Yes sir.
I'll be interesting to see how that semi-chisel holds an edge bucking dirty bottom wood compared to a full chisel....
I’ll let ya know next week.
Walnut is the best money tree out there when markets right 👍
Yes sir!
You will hate that chain brother, semi chisel would be a good choice, ive used it myself and its decent
I’ll let you know next week lol.
