- Enjoy the moment when Brian May got to unbox the first copy of the Gold Series release of Star Fleet.
This third release in the “Brian May Gold Series” offers an extensively revisited and expanded box set edition of these now legendary sessions. The set is a complete document of the two days, April 21 and 22, 1983 that May spent in the Record Plant, Los Angeles accompanied by top rock music luminaries Edward Van Halen (guitar), Alan Gratzer (drums), Phil Chen (bass) and Fred Mandel (keyboards). The box set includes a spectacular 23-track CD filled with previously unreleased material.
Containing 2 CDs, 1 vinyl LP, and a vinyl single, as well as other collector’s items, Brian May + Friends: Star Fleet Sessions will be launched as a Deluxe Edition box set, worldwide on July 14th.
A separate exclusive 7” double A-side single, also available on CD comes the same day, July 14th, featuring newly mixed single versions of “Star Fleet” and “Let Me Out”. I'm so glad this exists, there's something extraordinarily special about the iconic performers getting together to record this homage to a fun kids tv show.
A bit of trivia. Gene Roddenberry never complained about the name because he was big fan of the show and of Queen.
Thank you Brian for doing this. Not only for us fans that are yours, but also us fans that absolutely love Edward. This is an incredible addition for EVH fans to have another piece of his incredible playing. Thank you for this wonder gift of music. So happy that you had the wonderful relationship/friendship with EVH and the others who got to be apart of this.
Don't forget the porn soundtrack EVH did. Most people don't know about it, but the two tracks are brilliant to listen to without the video clips.
I'm definitely going to buy th CD version....I had the original vinyl one when it came out....as a massive EVH fan.
.(and Brian May...to the extent of owning a BMG red special copy)...this is a gift....and im pretty sure I speak for a lot of fans of Eddie when I say that we need to be grateful that the rights to this product/music belong to Brian May...with all due respect.
( and i do love them as musicians)..if it belonged to Alex van halen or wolfie or Dave and even Michael Anthony...
If it belonged to them it'd still be sat in a pile of tapes at 5150.for the next 25 years...by which time most van halen fans would be dead.....its always amazed me ( the van halen range of guitars and amps not withstanding) how a band as influential to a entire generation of players has NEVER NEVER EVER..
Had a boxset of out takes rarities...radio broadcasts...no deluxe 2 cd version of their best albums with DLR and maybe 5150 with Hagar...
they did one lack lustre live DVD.cobbled together from 2 shows and one reasonably good one live without a net ...never has there been a band so unaware of their legacy and place in musical history....so many lesser bands have milked every drop of product from their meagre talents...van Halen make even Led zeppelin look prolific....the only other band to match them for been super tight with live concerts and extra tracks is The Smiths...and YES....I can and DO love The Smiths as much as I love van halen.....in fact I I had it my way I be able to buy The Smiths and Van Halen CDs with all the vocals taken off so I could better hear what Eddie and Johnny are doing......
Ps......when the smiths were touring USA on a day off...Johnny marr..dragged Andy rouke...Mike Joyce...AND morrissey to a van halen concert ...he mentioned it once in an interview and how he was impressed by Eddie's smile and sheer joy of playing and been so good at playing...johnny kinda tells the tale in a slightly jokey way..( probably not to upset his "too cool for school " we don't like rock music fan base too much lol)...but...yeah you know he was impressed....any guitarist despite what their chosen genre would be impressed...and lying if they weren't....Eddie of course could literally more or less do anything....its hard now to try to explain to younger people how every album they did for about 6 albums Eddie would be doing something new or innovative...possibly the most exciting guitar player ever....and I never saw him live....by the time I got into him. I'm 56...and started going to concerts...they'd apart from supporting bon Jovi...given up touring anywhere outside the USA....

I bought Star Fleet as a new release back in the day. It's amazing how many people have never heard of it and even many professional musician friends have been astounded to hear it existed. Now it's out for a whole new generation to enjoy and marvel at !!! LET ME OUT !

Brian May is the talented person in each of our lifes , his music , lyrics , iconic red special guitar solos , are just massive gift to this world , i could personally listen the voice of Brian May for hours , his very calm , kind and wonderful person , sad that Freddie are no longer with us , he would be so happy to see how his best iconic band member and true best friend brings new music in life . 1984. I still remember the thrill of listening from the same cassette the playing of Brian and Eddie, both my favorite guitar players in the history of rock. I just couldn't believe it.

Wonderful to see and hear this EP be revived and released! ... It was almost impossible to find back in the 80s in southern inland Australia. I ended up with a copy on cassette, taped from another copy of a copy!!

This is like a top level birthday present. Wish I had this box . Saw you at Buckingham Palace Brian doing your rehearsal for the jubilee gig in 2022 . I was one of the many security guards during that week and see Alicia Keys dancing to you soundchecking Don’t Stop Mr Now ! She was shaking it and looked so happy! Made my week. A hot day . Just put up my version of Bohemian Rhapsody on here on my channel. I played everything , my ex gave me a full score with your guitar parts and so I decided to have a go . It’s The Cockney Bohemian Rhapsody ha ha . I’m not taking the pee I’m just doing it in my own way . I love Queen and the world loves Freddie

Still have the cassette version of this I bought back in the day when it was first released. Paid full price for it although it only had a few tracks on it - but I didn't care. It was Brian and Eddie.

I saw the video on MTV at a friend's house when it was first released in 1984. A few years later I found a vinyl promo copy at a used record store. My metalhead friends and I used to argue endlessly about who was the better guitarist, EVH or Brian May. Dropping the needle on this settled the argument: they're both the best at what they do. (Brian is arguably a better luthier, though. 😊)

I think Brian's a bit hazy on the Dai-X robot probably because it was so long ago, it was actually 3 rocket ships that form to make Dai-X. The original themes for the show (for the Western release) were composed and sung by Paul Bliss of The Moody Blues
A nice release - shame about the price tag. Its nice that "Queen" are letting us at some of the back catalogue rarities, just a shame its being done in a way that puts it out of the reach of many fans, old and new....especially if you have already forked out for the original album and maybe the 90's cd versions along the way.
