Their request for a vehicle to go up to summit every day is extremely reasonable. On your average 24h day when the summit is open, I think there will be somewhere around 10-20 tour vehicles visits to the summit... So I don't see any valid reasons to deny natives & locals the ability to visit the summit. I'm the farthest thing from a spiritual person, but if you have ever been to the summit of Mauna Kea you probably know very well that the place has much more to offer the world and it's people than simply a nice spot to plop down land-based telescopes.
