  • Have you noticed how words are being redefined? Words like "justice" have become weaponized and used to argue for abortion through the phrase "reproductive justice." Words like "authority" have been cast in a negative light, and words like "freedom," "truth," and "beauty" have all received modern makeovers that can leave us talking past each other. In today's podcast, Scott Allen highlights these key words and demonstrates their biblical understanding and then analyzes them in light of how they are now used in culture.

One treasure I gained is to lovingly and firmly "fight" for important words/definitions that are rooted in the Bible. So many treasures in this conversation!

This discussion is perceptive! It's good to bring to peoples' attention to damage when words are twisted. Redefining words can be a tactic of disruption, that impairs our communication with each other and wastes our energy. That a Christian standpoint can help bring us to a more discerning use of words could even be part of reaching out to people outside the church. Maybe I'm dreaming but I really think serious people will be attracted by a grounded Christian approach to better use of language.

The most dangerous is the redefinition of truth. So many souls are at risk because of this one.

Living in SE Asia, I’m surrounded by poverty. This is the first time I heard a western Christian say the cause of poverty is worldview-related, something I figured out a while ago. Well done!

Wonderful conversation. I'll have to revisit this one over and over to take it all in. Thank you!

Thanks Alisa for introducing me to Scott Allen. His take on the word "authority" was especially good, and reinforced what I already knew. His podcast is really good also, find it either through Ideas Have Consequences or Disciple Nations Alliance. DNA has free courses in Biblical worldview also.

Jesus is the Word. John 1:1-14. Scott explains things so clearly. Jesus commanded us to make disciples. Scott is on the right track. Alisa is discipling us. I also like her comment about the phrase "preach the gospel; if necessary use words." It is necessary to use words, the word of God. Paul defined the gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:3,4 specifically but in that whole chapter. Words are God's invention, not man's.

We don't understand our own language because words are often given bad definitions. Take discrimination for instance. Discrimination sounds bad and we are taught not to while discrimination means GOOD JUDGEMENT. To add the fact that judging someone by their race, gender or creed is not good judgement generally

Discrimination has many meanings based on proper context. In the same way Ra has many meanings.

Yes, people often redefine words, or use them incorrectly. Take the word “literally”, for instance. Yikes!

@@josephpchajek2685that's the problem. It had one meaning. Now it has 3 according to Merriam Webster's dictionary. But the only commonly understood meaning is the newest and it is quite different to the other two older ones.

Religious dictionaries and encyclopedias make up their own word definitions to insure the correct images form inside the brain of the believer
    Unfortunately words are not things.

God knows the true meanings His words are filled with. Words are containers for His essence. Seeking Him for the truth of the meanings of words is what is necessary.
