Book Claims to Teach Christians to Raise the Dead: A Review
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- Several years ago, Andrew and Kalley Heiligenthal asked the members of their church, Bethel in Redding, California, to pray for resurrection after their two-year old daughter Olive died suddenly. The hashtag #wakeupolive was shared thousands of times on social media. After the unsuccessful attempt to raise Olive from the dead, many Christians began wondering what type of theology was really being taught at Bethel. “How to Raise the Dead” is a book by Bethel alum Tyler Johnson. The book claims that every Christian should be performing miracles, raising the dead, and achieving immortality. The book has been sold in the Bethel book store, and lays a theological framework in which the author claims every Christian can harness resurrection power. Alisa read the book and offers her analysis and review on today’s episode.

Thank you Alisa for covering this important topic and heretical teaching. My husband and I were raised and the Pentecostal church. We have four sons and raised them in a conservative charismatic church. We are definitely on the conservative side and are very grieved at what is taught and practice out of Bethel. And 2008 our oldest son passed away with cancer, a rare liver cancer at the age of 22 1/2. we prayed we trusted God we believed, we had people praying all over the World, we did everything that we could medically which there wasn’t much offered to him. We even tried alternative medicine by going to a clinic in Mexico. Our son was deeply ministered to by your dad’s music when he came to our church and gave a concert/ worship time. The presence was so real! But all along the way the 2 1/2 years that he battled liver cancer, we knew the main thing was that God be glorified, and whatever happened. Our faith grew incredibly as a family. We were challenged and stretched beyond our imagination. our sons faith grew beyond our imagination. In the end, he told me mom if Jesus is not going to heal me which I know he can, but if it’s not his will I just want to go. I just want to go home. I knew, what home meant. It was hard for me to hear that. When Jesus said in john chapter 11 to Mary and Martha, I am the resurrection and the life he who believes in me, though he dies yet he shall live! We knew that promise was true. Jesus wasn’t talking about our earthly existence. My son is alive and well in the glorious promise of heaven, where he lives forever never to experience death again! Mr. Johnson, who teaches that Christian should not die is not teaching them the beauty and the promise of heaven. yes we miss our son, but God was so glorified in his life and through his illness. We were an incredible witness to many people and those we met in the medical community and others through his suffering and his passing. People are still interested in our story and how our family survived and none of us have deconstructed from our faith from having lost our son and brother. I am in the process of writing my memoir about this experience. The topic of healing will be a major topic in the book. God is glorified in our life on earth and our passing into eternal life with him. Yes, we do not die when we know the Lord, but we live in a different dimension, a glorious dimension, one that we are all destined for if we know Him!
Praise Him! He is Good and faithful!
Love you and appreciate your ministry
I only had a cancer scare from a positive result from a test and that was the exact text that so helped me turns out the test was wrong praise Him but for a while I didn’t know that and yes please write your book it will help so many God Bless xxxc
Truly beautiful..❤
This book is The Shack all over again. It's the voice of the serpent saying "you will not surely die."
😵💫and why did God redirect the widows sontheough Elisa?
Why did Paul redirect the guy falling out the window? Why did Peter resurect Tabitha?
Why did God resurect the police officer at Sophia?
Why are there still people resurrected today?
Was that the devil?
I do think that resurrections are happening today ,and I also do think they are not demonic . I will quat Andrew Wommack here, there is no false in his teaching. Everything he says is entirely based on the bible. He rose his own son from the death. Of course, it was God's power through him. I can not say this was of the devil
This is a much needed book review. Sadly, the church in America is caught between the progressive gospel and the new apostolic gospel......may God have mercy on us....thanks Alisa for taking the time to do this.
It is so encouraging to see you connect the dots on how these two seemingly “opposing” camps treat scripture in the exact same self serving ways. Thanks for this one Alisa! Please keep pulling on this thread.
It sounds like we need to pray for Tyler Johnson. If we (Christians) read the Bible the way it's meant to be read (cover to cover, chronologically, and several times while studying it over our lifetime), it isn't hard to discern that this author doesn't fully understand who our holy, triune God is... or he's willfully deceiving the church... Lord have mercy on him..
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND MIke Winger's channel for the purpose of his deep dive into Bethel & several other reasons. I genuinly can't imagine any serious Christian, or anyone who seeks Jesus, who would visit his channel & not subscribe by the end of the episode...ANY episode.
Hearing this and the video you did after this causes so much concern in me. People are hearing and believing a false doctrine from these false teachers. Thank you Alisa for putting them on blast. I was totally unaware this was going on.
Crazy how in one breath he says the OT isn't relevant anymore but I'm the next quote Song of Solomon and says that it represents our relationship with God. So contradictory
Bethel needs to repent of their false teachings. They are spending a lot of time teaching mysticism and other lies!
They need prayer badly.
What else do they teach? Thanks 😊
@@kjpesl7311 Bill Johnson is part of the “Emergent” church groups.
Emergent church is heavily influenced by eastern mysticism with ties to the Roman Catholic mysticism of pagan origins, one of the reasons Constantine moved the Roman Catholic Church to Istanbul (he later renamed it after his name sake) was to save it from all the pagan perversion that was going on with the leadership.
For a full historical perspective on the FULL church history from its inception by the Apostles to its perversion by varied individuals from within that transformed it from a body of Christ church to a Roman Pagan church, see Halley’s Bible Handbook. It list ALL dates and individuals who had a hand in its perversions, including Constantine moving it due to heavy pagan practices. Halley’s list it’s actual source materials. I own the 1965 edition, but be sure you do not get the Billy Graham edition. For some reason he took out this section.
As for the Emergent church beginnings and institutions, which Bethel is part of because of Bill Johnson, there is a brother who did some great research, with source material. Roger Oakland in “Faith Undone” has some amazing details that help people understand the deep eastern ties to this movement. The NAR movement is tied to the Emergent churches and sadly so are MANY “Evangelicals” which really started with the 1994 “Evangelicals and Catholics Together” treaty, which had in its body that real Christian’s are only part of the Catholic Church. That treaty you can download yourself. (Evangelicals and Catholics Together" is a 1994 ecumenical document signed by leading Evangelical and Catholic scholars in the United States. The co-signers of the document were Charles Colson and Richard John Neuhaus, representing each side of the discussions.)
Anyway, as for Bethel they have a school teaching mystic arts, but selling it as a “Christian” training. The Emergent group teaches one can be saved by Jesus no matter what religion they practice. You can be Muslim and Christian or Buddhist or Hindu it doesn’t mater. The book “Faith Undone” has many of these individuals quotes stating this and many more false teachings. Ray Yungan and David Hunt are some other authors with have really done some great research on the Roman Catholic and Emergent church groups that are perverting scripture.
It’s a lot to study but as a disciple of Jesus it’s worth it. Galatians 1:8,9 really says it all. Look up the original word accursed used in verses 8 & 9. It really shows how serious false teachings are taken by God.
Good reading!
And you think rationalism’s is the right way to believe🤔
@@grace4peace that is a stupid response.
I am seeking God's way in and for my life because I finally surrendered after PTSD and making the wrong choice to be secluded
This is great news, brother. If I may offer some advice: try to spend time in prayer to God (quality over quantity). Spend time reading the Bible: start with the Gospels in the new testament. Forgive me if I completely misread you brother, as you may already be a seasoned Christ follower. God bless, my friend!
God’s way is the best and only way to live! Your post really touched my heart. I’m very sorry for whatever happened to cause the PTSD. You are making the right decision to follow God and to stop living in seclusion. Whenever it gets hard, cry out to Jesus and he will help you. He really does love you so very much! I wanted to encourage you because I can relate to you in a way. I’ve had trauma in my life and had lived in isolation for quite a long time. When I turned to God, he changed me. I continuously ask the Lord for help and for wisdom because it says in James 1:5 in the Bible that we can ask God for wisdom and he PROMISES to generously give it to us. I know that this something I need daily to make the right (his) decisions. I promise to be praying for you, blisstickmystic. 😊🙏

Alisa, thank you so much for your impassioned review of this book. It’s so sad to see our brothers and sisters, as well as many seeking truth who haven’t yet met Jesus, to see them being led astray by such damaging false theology and often sadly buying into it. This kind of destructive unbiblical teaching must be called out and exposed for what it is: blatant lies from the evil one. Thank you for doing your part, dear sister.
It’s so important for all of us to know what is going on in popular culture, churches, people, books and movements, so we are on guard and do not let them infiltrate our beliefs. Thank you for keeping me on track and my faith Biblical! ❤
All I can say is wow, thank you so much for delving into this for your listeners!
Well done, Alisa! It's so powerful to hear the scriptures you brought forth that proclaim truth, light, life, faith and knowledge of who our Triune God is and the grace He gives us to know and trust Him for all things through the Lord Jesus Christ while also completely exposing lies, darkness and deception of the evil one.
Thanks, Alisa, for quoting the book so much and the comparison between Bethel & Progressive Christianity!
Even if raising people from the dead was normative…how much greater is it for a Christian to be in the better place, in the presence of God than to be here? Shouldn’t that be our attitude towards death for believers? How selfish to rip them away from paradise and plop them back into this broken world because we want to.
Father God make a way for me and my sons. As a single mother I feel so alone. God I know my faith in you will get me through my hardships I’ve been facing with my sons as a single mother. Both of my sons are special needs and require much from me. Lord I’m trusting your plan but as I struggle to pay bills every month and as I struggle to buy groceries I ask that you give me strength.❤️
Praying for you. God will be faithful to you and your sons. Jesus loves you ❤️.
I struggled as a single mom of 2boys (in all ways- incldg paying rent, buying food, etc.,) They're grown & on their own now
I can't quite imagine if one, let alone both of my boys had had special needs, bc I've not bn in your shoes in that way.
I prayed for you- before I finished my reply. My heart genuinely goes out to you. I would help you if I could.
God has done so many "impossible" things in my life that have my ghast thoroughly & forever FLABBERED, so as unlikely as it is- im going to ask this question: Do you happen to live in Spokane? I pray you will see this & reply soon.
Thanks for sharing 🙏🏿
Prayers out for those in that movement 🕊️

Absolutely excellent and greatly needed in our nation!
Who defines God’s character if not scripture? We would end up doing that filtering who He is through our own lens. Isn’t this idolatry at its core?? This book is filled with heresy.
I could use some advice… I do not like singing Bethel songs at my church because of their bad theology. I have been wrestling with this for a long time and this podcast seems to affirm my views on singing their songs.
I also will not sing Bethel songs at my church.
A church that I attended in Pennsylvania for 16 years was affiliated with Bethel Church. Bill and Kris came to our church. My husband and I left the church on good terms but felt called away when we had our children. Hindsight is twenty twenty. I love the people there, but things are amiss....
Thank you to Alisa, as well as Mike Winger and Sean McDowell, for drawing me to Christ and ultimately helping me be saved!
On another note, Alisa’s music is fire - I highly recommend Your Grace is Enough and The Battle is the Lord’s.
Very emotional. Thanks for everything you do here❤
Oof. That last passage from the book was disturbing. Praying that God would open their eyes, not only to the fact that they are mischaracterising Him, but that they are actually hurting already grieving people ‘in His name’.
It is outrageous how off the claims of this book are, and even more so the number of people that are lulled and allured by this kind of teaching. Thank you, Alisa, for your ongoing stance on truth and for helping to expose the deceitfulness and SELF-serving nature of these teachings.
Thank you Alisa!
WOW! this stuff is nuts! It is hard to imagine that followers of Jesus, true christians who read their Bibles are falling for this! Alisa, what kind of impact has his book and ministry had? Does Bethel still stand behind him?
I so appreciate your heart and care to spell out these dangers and point us to The Lord Himself as you refute these terrible teachings. Praying for you and yours, Sweet Sister! ❤
The Chosen portrayed Jesus in the synagogue reading from the scroll of Isaiah so well. Yes He stopped before reading the vengeance Scriptures and explained why He had stopped (it was not a long explanation). The Chosen helps to solidify many Scriptures and stories in the Old Testament and the New.
That is an incredibly odd theology.. especially God needing anything from us
I think the problem with many Christians, progressive or not, is that we separate God's characteristics. If I'm a "good person" and steal from someone, in that moment I'm "bad". The finite human mind can't hold those diametrically opposed ideas at the same time. So when we think about God, we separate goodness from justice from mercy from holiness because our finite minds can't comprehend that those things exist in God all at the same time and also completely -- He's not a little more good over here and more just over there. He's all of it all the time! One book that revolutionized how I understand God's characteristics is Chip Ingram's God As He Longs For You to See Him. (I don't know much about his theology overall, but I found nothing objectionable in that book.)
Love you, sister. Thank you for your work!
I've been to many different pentecostal churches. I've heard many prophecies. I've heard preachers talk about people being raised from the dead. I've seen people who call themselves apostles and prophets And when you disagree with them, they say you are blaspheming the holy spirit all of these wolves are liars. I think you're being overly nice but thats my opinion. .
1:27:12 the idea of stopping at car accidents is a good idea - if you can do it without interfering with emergency responders- and pray or comfort as possible!
Thank you for your book review and discussion, so important for us to avoid heretical interpretations
the description of worship almost sounds like he is saying let God worship us.
Thank you for all you do! Have you ever noticed that those that claim we should all be able to heal the sick and raise the dead never go to an I.C.U., a cemetery or a morgue to heal the sick and raise the dead? The author of the book talks a big game, but he won't do it himself, he'll send out teams....of course if it doesn't work, then someone didn't have "enough faith." Praying for you. Thanks again!
1:00:09 We LOVE the longer, in-depth, Mike Winger-esque videos. Keep em coming 👍🏽
“This kind of theology hurts people” is a great truth you have spoken. It makes unbelievers laugh at us and as such it becomes difficult if not impossible to get them to take Christianity seriously. It’s hard enough to get them to believe that the miracles described in scripture actually did occur. Putting proof right under their noses that a claimed miracle fails today 100% of the time just confirms it. We would all like nothing more than perfect health and immortality. God has promised that we will receive it. He gave us a taste of it through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus along with the acts of the apostles. I do think that miracles are still possible and there is reason to believe that they do happen, but this theology that says we can learn how to command God’s power is dangerous. It’s role reversal making us the master and Him the servant. This is a common thread that runs through all cults. Man elevating Himself to be equal with God and desiring God’s power and authority.
Melissa Dougherty just did a podcast about the false teaching called New Thought and Tyler Johnson would definitely fall under that category
If you love Me, you will obey Me. This love is not dependent on feelings.
If I'm not mistaken, repent means change of mind. Let us also be on watch as emotions are a great weapon of Satan. Well said, Lisa, regarding the mind.
this channel is such a blessing and such a great resource
The whole idea of a miracle is that it supercedes normal processes in the created order, right? Therefore anything that takes a view of a known, teachable, inevitable procedure to accomplish it, by definition then would not be a miracle, right?
Good point!!
thank you, Alisa. God bless1
Where are the people who have been raised from the dead? I haven't heard anybody talk about it.
That's weird. By the way, is it also weird that we never hear from Lazarus after... you know... ?
Decided to start reading "The Seduction of Christianity" Hunt and McMahon... Written in the 1980s... There really is nothing new under the sun.
A quote: Anyone who imagines that because he thinks certain thoughts and speaks certain words God must (emp) respond in a certain way, has slipped into sorcery, and, if not playing God, it is at the very least attempting to manipulate God.
That's a great book. I read that one too on my search for truth. This slide into apostasy was even going on in Spurgeon's day. He called it a downgrade. Nowadays, it might be called a cliff.
Hearing Johnson's view on various scripture passages, I've found him void of any biblical understanding only good in twisting the true meaning of scripture.
Good point about emotions and mind in worship.
I remember reading about Jesus replying to a potential disciple, let the dead bury the dead but you come and follow Me. Jesus was saying we are all dead spiritually until we are made alive by the Holy Spirit.
Our witness for Christ has the "potential", and only the potential, to raise the dead (dependent upon the Holy spirit Ephesians 2:8-9) but life and death are not ours to give or take.
Life is not ours to give because we, as individuals and created beings, are not God and life is not ours to take because God has commanded us thou shall not murder. Taking the soul for judgement is God's prerogative as Creator not ours.
Does this guy say what 95 year old resurrected grandma is going to look like for the rest of her life? How is her physical abilities? Will she have aches & pains? In a wheelchair for eternity? Or just until the second coming? Oh, wait, we shouldn't have any suffering... How can anyone take this guy seriously?
Thank for teaching us truth 🙏
Thank you SO much for this video!! I had no idea how much I bought into the healing/ proclaiming gospel and prayer!
My church in 2021 hooked up with Bethel and Bill Johnson at James River church in Ozark, Missouri! JRC has 4 campuses altogether with Springfield and Joplin! John Lindell and 4 family members run the church but it's cause division and thousands have left bc of JL bringing in Bill Johnson but the people are being deceived! JL blames others for the division but it's squarely on him and his family!😢
I bought a book years ago during the 1969 revival in Seattle. It was titled
I WANT TO BE UNDER THE SPOUT WHERE THE GLORY COMes OUT. The theme was about the emotionalism that leaders use to influence people’s belief about God. Not always scriptural or doctrine based.
You mentioned Brian Zahnd. To know what he thinks of the Old Testament and the Atonement of Christ read his book " Sinners in the hands of a loving God. "
Great talk, thank you.
I am in a Pentecostal church and leaning into some of these teachings . I try to be open, but hold to an honest interpretation of scripture.
Here is my 2C. As we approach the end times, we will start to see miracles. Some will be true miracles , and some will be false because neither corrupt ambition or deceptive spirits. If the church believes in miracles, then why haven’t they sold everything and begun to be open to God and under their authority like the apostles were? Start doing that, and then let’s talk.
What are you doing to influence and help your sisters and brothers to not follow these teachings as a Pentecostal?
I have no idea why I would ever want to raise someone from the dead. This just makes no sense. I would like to raise some who has not been born. Now that would be cool. but I would rather create something that has never existed, and I did this with only my mind. But that would scare me.
Thanks Alisa ❤
Since Tyler Johnson is a BSSM grad I wonder if they or Bill Johnson have gone on record to denounce his teachings. Regardless, I wish folks could realize that Bethel’s bad theology isn’t any help when it comes to discerning against such false teaching. And with the tragic story of “Wake up Olive” that Alisa mentioned is it really any wonder folks would go on to take the dead raising nonsense so far? This kind of stuff is so destructive and harmful and as a parent who has experienced tragic loss, I’m saddened to think of how it could affect families in times of loss. They can’t even grieve their loved one as God would want them to. They’re supposed to be bringing them back and of course when they can’t, it’s somehow their fault. I have no grace for Tyler Johnson or anyone pushing this stuff and appreciate Alisa for uncovering his book of lies.
Wonder what they do with John's declaration, "There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that"?
I found a wonderful set of videos detailing how these doctrines came through from the early 1900's...Leaving The Message @leavingthemessage William Branham Cult
That’s an excellent RUclips channel….he goes into the history of the Branham cult he grew up in and shows how it is affecting churches today.
Hi. Love your videos and podcast! I have a question that I hope you can shed light on. My husband is a new Christian and he came across this book called The War Within by Dr. Micheal Cocchini. Do you know if this book is truly biblical and not some form of new age Christian beliefs? The bio made me skeptical but I’m not trained to know the red flags. Thanks so much
Excellent review! Thank you!
There's a lot of Rob Bell and "The Shack" in this too. What a mess.
Kind of ironic that “touch not mine anointed” seems not to apply to respect for Peter; yet is quick to be commandeered to validate their own authority
Eschatology and hermeneutics... you get those wrong and your theology is going to be wrong. Mike Winger, in his videos on Bethel and Johnson, says they have an, "over realized eschatology," meaning that we don't live in the tension of Romans 8, waiting for the redemption of our bodies and creation but instead they believe we just don't recognize our "rights" and "authority" in Christ. I was surprised by what you shared that Johnson wrote about the creative power of words, etc. I got saved out of the Occult and New Age in 1980 and was discipled initially in the Calvary Chapel church community. Bethel's music has many cringe worthy lyrics because of their Word Of Faith false beliefs built into their music. Thank you for the clear and thorough analysis you shared in this video.
I wonder if he fears death because he doesn't really believe the Gospel.
For future reference, I don't want to live in this life forever.
I live in St. Jo, MO. Can you give me references on the Brian Zahnd quotes you shared? Which book?
Is Tyler Johnson related to Bill Johnson?
Which book of bill Johnson is being quoted when you say "One time when I was alone with the Lord he told me I am so good, I am so good, I am heretically good"? Thanks to whoever can answer this. I couldn't find it online.
Alisa, you are right to be so animated about this heretical teaching. Thank you for bringing it to our attention!
Thank you for this ...the (wrong) practice of Christianity is certainly as old as the early church and biblical truth is our goal. You are right the damage done is the proof of the error. I too was raised in the charismatic church of the 70's and have seen the fallout of this error in the church many times. This is a timely study because the Church is soon to be in need of sound doctrine and wisdom
In Matt. 10:1 the scripture also states the DISCIPLES were given authority over the unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.
Around the 29:00 mark, how dare he say what the he did about God's Word! Doesn't he know that "The Word was with God and the Word WAS GOD!!
Why would the parents want their child back in her body? The Lord teaches us is it far better to depart and be with Christ, and that I would be absent from the body and present with the Lord.
Her parents were thinking with the mind of the flesh.
They should have rejoiced.
We groan waiting to be taken to Him
What does he do with It's appointed onto man once to die and after that the judgement?
I swear that 90% of heretical theologies are based on horribly misinterpreting 1-2 verses.

Which book of Johnson you are quoting? You have to name Page Book and print! That would be right.
Thank you for your insight.
You say that you aren’t saying people at Bethel aren’t Christians, but as much as the Mormons teach a different gospel, Bill Johnson teaches a different gospel.
Unbelievable how Johnson can twist the Scripture like that! He truly made his own interpretation his authority, and to think a lot of people are deceived? It calms me to know that God knows His sheep..
Will this be including the time the charismatics were trying to raise "olive" toddler girl from the dead ?
God still heals today
Great episode
I believe Mathew 10 was gospel of the kingdom in his earthy ministry before the atonement of the cross, preached only to Israel, whereas the gospel that was preached after the Pentecost was the gospel of salvation by grace alone through faith in Christ alone to be preached to all the world.
This reminds me of the medieval ages when Christian clergymen where taught how to use necromancy spells from other Christians.
Haven't read Johnson's book so can't comment on it, but Mark 16:16 does invoke raising the dead. My concern is throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
That is the common effect unfortunately when these conversations happens; one extreme or the other. It is rare when people actually provide detail, nuance, and context.
Sounds like silliness
The whole time you've been talking all I could think about was how Jesus wept for Lazarus, and then STILL raised him from the dead. And also - raising the dead, in scripture - that was so rare. It was so unique and terrifying that Lazarus was the final tipping point for the Jewish leaders to plot the death of Jesus. This is just so anti-biblical. He clearly has not really read the Word.
So good! Thank you!
I know someone who believes like this. It is absolutely unbiblical. It is such a dishonor to our Lord and Savior. It IS HARMING people and leading people astray.
I don’t know if I’m understanding this correctly but are we supposed to think God doesn’t perform miracles?
No, but we should also not expect/assume these miracles are inevitable if we follow the correct steps (7:29).
@@ryanballantyne1811 Miracles will happen only according to HIS will.

Beautiful!! 🩷🌈😻
People who want to practice deliverance and healing use Mark 16:14-18 to prove they are supposed to. Can you speak to that?
I read that this scripture was possibly added in the the 900s AD.
Genesis clearly states that the years of man will not exceed 120 years
This is so good!
