  • Capping a year-long design effort, Bishop Kevin Vann has shared an ambitious design plan for transforming the iconic 78,000-square-foot structure and its 34-acre campus into a space that supports the liturgy and patrimony of the Catholic Church, while serving as a center of evangelization, interreligious dialogue and outreach to the materially poor.

    At age 33 I came to the faith. In fact last year I went to a parish and got catechism lessons from a dedicated priest. Last christmas I got baptized, with sisters singing and my family there, despite being atheists their whole life. Unbelievable, I‘m now a practising catholic. I love my faith and my beautiful SSPX parish routed in tradition. Thank god!

    As a former member of the Crystal Cathedral Congregation, (we were transferred to Ohio from Southern CA) I am delighted with the plans. Robert Schuller said to Father Christopher when the two had a chance encounter - after the Diocese acquired the property in 2011 - "I built the Cathedral for Jesus Christ and I know with the Roman Catholics it will be for Christ - FOREVER."....it could not have been stated any better. There is some of our treasure in those buildings that we helped construct and I cannot think of a better organization to entrust our campus to that the Roman Catholics.
    There is a photo taken in 1979 of Robert Schuller receiving a blessing from Pope John Paul II on his (under construction) "Crystal Cathedral" - Schuller has since stated "Everyone thought I had this Master Plan [for the campus] - well I didn't -- but God did..." Perfectly stated....

    God Bless you all for doing such a beautiful job restoring and renovating such a grand space. I know there are so many who don't like what is happening.... but that's their problem. Had it not been for the Catholic Church acquiring the property... and respecting the architecture ..... I'm positive that it most likely would have been demolished.... OR turned into yet another ridiculous Shopping Mall!! I'm sure Dr. Schuller is so proud and grateful that this Sacred Space will continue to be a refuge for millions of God's children!

    Upon following these vids provided by the press and the archdiocese I can 1st of all see the amazing joy, hope and pride of faith in the faces and posture of the most humble modest means catholic parishioners, whether Hispanic, Vietnamese, elderly, etc. The cathedral campus has a legacy that resonates. The archdiocese recognizes this with great respect towards it's Protestant founders and donors. This project is a beautiful transformation to a catholic liturgical place of worship as the Body of Christ. Very well done so far I can see.

This area will accommodate from 8,000 to 20,000 people. As the name suggests, there will be a shrine to the Blessed Virgin located in this place." *The Crystal Cathedral remodel has some unique challenges for the designers.* The choral sanctum rebuild is in concert with Fratelli Ruffatti Sp.A.'s overhaul of the Hazel Wright Organ; I'd have recommend repositioning the pipes and expression boxes to better support the Catholic rite's liturgical requirements in addition to replacing several ranks of Solo pipes with aluminum principals and strings, copper flutes, and copper and steel reed resonators, which can tolerate the thermal cycling that destroyed many of the original SnPb Solo pipes beyond repair (sagging and even detached languids were discovered during teardown). The raised platform for the altar and the bishop's seat is a good move. Congregational seating for the remodel is an excellent adaptation of the arrangement in the Greek-cross plan at St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City, which has equal capacity for congregants on three sides of the altar platform (the fourth being reserved for clergy and choir); here, only the "nave" is short on account of sanctuary dimensions optimized for an Anglican congregation in a television studio rather than for the balance of the Anglican liturgy. Most of the stations of the Cross and some auxiliary chapels can be located in the "transepts," which have room to spare.

      +VinylToVideo Nor do I. It is exactly as you describe, modernist and cold. I guess saving a few bucks by buying an existing structure was more important than having something suitable for Catholic worship. Of course, with all the money they are sinking into this pit, I find it hard to believe they couldn't have built a proper Catholic church from the ground up.
      But then, when we see the monstrosities built in Oakland and the Arch of LA, it seems there are few if any Catholic architects left in the state of California.

      @graciouscompetentdwarfrabbit 6 лет назад +2

      VinylToVideo The cathedral itself shouldn't give a glimpse of Heaven on Earth. The Mass is that glimpse. The cathedral it's just a consecrated place where the Mass and other catholic services take place. The building itself it's important, that's true, but have you ever seen Masses celebrated outside? The places aren't always very comforting, but the Mass is ALWAYS that glimpse.

    • @ephraimpaul
      @ephraimpaul 4 года назад +1

      @@graciouscompetentdwarfrabbit a cathedral needs that visual awe and sacredness, in fact not just the cathedral but churches too. Its through the visual awe that'll interest people to learn and discover that there's something more important, which is the Sacrifice of Mass. I agree that the mass should be a glimpse of heaven & earth, but most celebrants don't celebrate mass in such a way because they misinterpreted the Liturgical reforms in Vatican II and caused Liturgical Abuse. Sadly this happened because some priests who weren't visually in awe lacked motivation and conviction in celebrating Mass. The disciples saw the miracles of Jesus before they understood some of His teaching/mysteries and appreciated them

    This video doesn't really "unveil" very much about the plans for the changes to be made and doesn't give a good idea for what the spaces will feel like. That's too bad because it gives rise to fears among many Catholics that the space won't feel Catholic at all. Too often modern architecture is devoid of the lively symbolic expressions of faith that are at the very heart of our Catholic heritage. This is a special problem at the Christ Cathedral where the major axis of the building defies Catholic tradition and is shorter than the minor axis. It would also help if the staff of the diocese would (once in a while) mention prayer as a legitimate activity that should take place in a cathedral. Constantly mentioning "gathering" and "outreach" without ever mentioning prayer and the lifting of one's heart to God does not engender a good feeling that traditional Catholic piety is going to be upheld.
    Don't get me wrong. I'm not a naysayer. I may very well end up liking the Christ Cathedral when the work is complete. I'm not opposed to modern architecture if it is suitably inspiring and functional. But I am saying that this video doesn't go into enough detail to soothe traditional Catholic sensibilities, as you can witness for yourself in some of the following comments. Catholics are not iconoclasts and shouldn't have to worship in a whitewashed space essentially devoid of iconography.

      +dlwatib *Not so much a problem* - the Christ Cathedral sanctuary congregational seating plan is adapted from that in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City, which has equal floor area on all four sides of the altar platform to accommodate reasonably equal numbers of congregants on three sides (the fourth being reserved for clergy and choir). Christ Cathedral's shape biases seating capacity to the transepts, but the nave still has a reasonable proportion of the floor area for congregational seating. The only surprise for me was a flying canopy and bronze cross above the new altar platform; i reckoned on a life-sized crucifix above and behind the bishop's seat, probably anchored where Dr. Schuller's pulpit used to stand.

    If this Cathedral leads to an increase in vocations to the priesthood in our diocese, then it is a success. One only has to drive to St Michael's Abbey near Cook's Corner, to see what happens when priests celebrate liturgical worship and prayer according to our 2000-year-old traditions. The Abbey is literally bursting at the seams with vocations, men who want to serve our Lord, Jesus. Is it because the Abbey has modernized its offerings? Or is it because the Abbey is such a radical departure from regular life for these men that they are drawn to the ageless wisdom of our ancient forms of worship? If the Cathedral leads more men to become priests then it is a success, if not, it has been a waste of our Lord's resources. Europe has plenty of these "new" looking churches. They sit empty...

      @@iawy8264 When did I say that? There are thousands and thousands of churches, cathedrals, and basilicas which bring the heart and mind to God. A church is a place where the heart and mind go to prayer. The architecture should also reflect this. This is why the Church has traditionally built in certain style’s throughout history because those styles accomplish that. In the past 60 years, this modernist style has come to be popular. Although many of the buildings are quite cool and interesting, they don’t bring the heart and mind to God in anyway. It becomes a way to glorify man rather than God because we think we need to make the designs as crazy as possible. Here’s an example of a church which actually is an appropriate place for worship: ruclips.net/video/Ic6damkPw88/видео.html

    These are the words of the priest in charge of the restoration of the building.... he just forgot a little something...that Cathedrals and churches do not celebrate stoic values for good that they are... we celebrate GOD ONLY!!! Our focus, and the Church's focus is not the people of God or nice ideas.... is God alone!!! This priest has betray his priesthood. His job is to offer to God Jeusus' sacrifice on the Cross and to clean God's people from their sins and not to celebrate solidarity!! Nasty. Disappointing. Can somebody smack the face of that arrogant man?!

    As an Architect I can not see any form of catholic identity in this non inviting out of scale building , where people do not feel like they can come inside with glass walls non inviting . Where is the way of the cross? .
    The lizard skin like ceiling its just so no catholic. The piramid upside down above the altar is forgotten? or too obvious?
    Sorry futuristic not inviting for worship.its a place for buisness for the super rich .
    How to find God in this place.
    I apologize but a no no

    a Missa Versus Populum acabou se tornando Versus ninguém. A Igreja tem que ter uma nave Central, e essa Catedral é totalmente mal adaptada. Sinceramente, será um show de horrores liturgico.

      Deplorable Covfefe In the 80s when I went there as a child, there were “Angels” swinging like acrobats from the ceiling, artistic dramatizations glorifying the word of the Bible, the church was impressive on the outside and from within it did very little to distract from the events that played out. We were gifted crystal stars at the close of ceremony, and the memory stands within my mind as beautiful. I searched out the cathedral, because of the memory and the season. You don’t like the architecture, because it wasn’t designed with you in mind. It was designed for the children of a bygone era, a great time, I guess you had to be there to appreciate it...

    Should of left it alone. It was already iconic and beautiful. Sure u have to add an altar and candles and a few other catholic elements. But u didn’t have to spend a mint and ruin an iconic building. So sad.

    The. Catholic Church has millions and millions of dollars, so let’s spend it on ourselves like this building. THR CHURCH IS THE PEOPLE NOT THE BUILDING! Instead of using the money for this useless stuff, why not send money to those in need? Why not send money to help end hunger to those places around the world?

    The internal renovation is an eyesore and not worthy of the former glorious Crystal Cathedral. The internal renovation is appalling to say the least and the vandalism of a once majestic and beautiful place!!
