How To Use Reference Layers - Anime Studio Pro 11 Tutorial

  • Hey! As vaguely promised last week, here is what could be the first in a series of tutorials about Anime Studio. I had some requests for this on an Anime Studio forum so I handled this subject specifically, but I could handle other topics too.
    Please, let me know what you might be interested in via the comments. I'll be listening.
    One useful tidbit that I forgot to include in the video: Do you see that red outline that appears around some of your layers while you're clicking on your reference layers? The red outline is highlighting the original source of that reference. Very useful once you get a billion layers set up :)
    Thanks for tuning in! By the way, that teaser clip of my cartoon that plays at the end of this video is available on its own in my channel as well.
    The music clip I use at the beginning here is by Mitch Etter.

    Bill......... Dude this is awesome all day! I just updated to AS11 days ago, partly because I was broke (thank you tax returns for letting me get it!) and partly because I'm really need a "must have" feature for me to upgrade with any program. There were others but THIS, THIS RIGHT HERE! PPWEWFFFTT!! That's the typed version of my mind being blown! At first I was like, "Well I can control parts of a mask and it's object by using bone binding but, as you said, that can get really messy and if you don't bind correctly you won't the the control you have with this technique! I love it! My head started buzzing on how I could use reference layers. This is great stuff!
    Also, Yes, please make more tutorials! I'm making tutorials for the same reason. I want to make it easier for other people to learn and fall in love with this program but also, doing animation is so time consuming, it's impossible to put out content on a regular consistent basis. Subscribers could fall by the wayside because of time between content uploads. I want to really start taking animation seriously and hope to grow my channel but without making tutorials it's almost impossible! Plus, AS needs more high quality tutorials like this. I'm very amateurish and unskilled when it comes to making tutorials so having channels and animators that have much higher skill sets with AS like yours, Victor Paredes and Jared Hundley and others making really professional tuts is super awesome!
    I'm pretty old but I'm still a Padawan when it comes to the animation game!

    Thank You for this tutorial. . .Most others seem to brush over what they assume you should already know...I have been learning AS for a few months now and I seem to compartmentalize what I learn into ..... Layers if you will....Learn this first...then move on once that is fully understood....I now feel I have a much better understanding of References.....And I agree With ShoNuff93....Please make more. There are fewer than you would think that explain things as well... I have seen many and have found the new features of 11.2 tutorials done by Victor Paredes to be very helpful .
    Your videos are also very clear and well doneso ... PLEASE Continue to make them...
    Love your characters by the way....

    Hey bill, is it possible to give a tutorial on how you were able to get such a smooth head turn. Im new at this and im trying to get some resources before jumping in. Thanks.

    • @MarsHock
      @MarsHock  8 лет назад

      Phillip, hello! There are some good head turn tutorials if you look around - some on Anime Studio / Moho's own channel, and some by other indie artists. But I'll eventually make my own, yes. It's a bit different for animal characters too - sometimes you need to make an "ear turn" first, and then stack that into the head turn. I did this for Rakitty.

  • @DotsNDaggers

    How would you mask strokes on a character where you did not want to see strokes unless the character's body parts overlap? For Example: a Ninja character dressed in all black with no stroke lines, but you want white strokes to appear on his arms only when they cross his other body parts so you can still see the arms and thus the readability of the character is preserved.

    Awesome tut ! Does someone knows if there is some kind of bug/issue using smartbones and referencing, i am having trouble to bend arms, in my reference layer they doesnt apply the smart bones dials. =(. so they dont perfectly overlap, and i need it to create depth. thank you :)

    • @manzanimator371
      @manzanimator371 5 лет назад

      i randomly founded the bug. It seems that when i create the ref layer it's appear with an issue. The trick is to create the reference layer, and after that undo and redo, to have the reference layer with no issue. Was really strange haha. Thank you bill =) will look at the group!

    I hope I am not bothering you with this small question but is it possible to use the technique for switch layers? or just using smart bones?

    • @MarsHock
      @MarsHock  7 лет назад

      I haven't used Switch layers as much as the other features, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Switch layers have been pretty reliable so far.

    • @abdulla-al-saif
      @abdulla-al-saif 7 лет назад

      because I tried it and it's required me to do the same thing twice! which I don't think is a good idea to do so using the bones is much more easier! but then it became a bit too complicated for me to handle because I can't distinguish between which thing is for which even thought I can control any layer! because they all in one layer! is there is a better way for me to handle the mouth layer!

    Here's a interesting question: are there any uses for creating reference layers FROM other reference layers? If Layer 1 is your base and Layer 2 is your reference layer, would there be any use at all for making Layer 3 be a reference to Layer 2, and then Layer 4 a reference to Layer 3? Hmm.

    • @MarsHock
      @MarsHock  8 лет назад

      +The Crave I believe if you make a reference layer from Layer 2, it would just be a second reference to Layer 1. I can try this out but I think that's what happens.
      But if it doesn't work that way, well... there's always a use for something, even if it's an obscure use. I bet something could be thought of.

    hi, thanks for video. I understand reference layer generally what is used for with your simple shape sample... But I can't think how I can use refence layer with character creating process. Can you give example(like end of the video, using for ear..)?
    thanks

    • @MarsHock
      @MarsHock  7 лет назад +1

      For character setups, reference layers are useful when you have lots of Masking layers. Normally, a Mask has to be set up using folders, so any time you want to edit the Mask shape, you have to click around your layers and find that layer. But if set all the Masking layers to be Reference Layers, you can place the original layers up at the top of your layer panel for easy access.
      Then, you never have to scroll down your layer panel to find all your masks.

    Thanks a lot! I also have one question - how did you make it so that your character's head kind of turns in (almost) 3D when you rotate the bone ?

    • @MarsHock
      @MarsHock  7 лет назад +1

      That's a smart bone. It's controlling playback of a secondary timeline where I've set keyframes for that head animation, so whenever I turn the bone, it plays that special timeline back and forth.

  • @matusuhercik9829
    @matusuhercik9829 6 лет назад

    hello Bill, can you help my? I have a character who uses a few reference layers (mouth, eyes, ...) where I want to manipulate the points in the original shape ("hide in editing view / don't render this layer") - for complex facial rig and works great! However, when I save this character to my library and then import him like instance into a new scene and check "import by reference", everything I described above breaks and all of those referenced layers become controled only by original shape from original character from library. Not in instance what i imported from library. How you import yours character for example Bearcoon (he has lot of referenced layers also) to new scenes? do you import it like "import by reference" or you import it like copy and there is not reference between original more? Thanks

    • @MarsHock
      @MarsHock  6 лет назад

      I usually import as a copy, not a reference. Also, if you continue to encounter character import problems, try opening the original rig file and saving a copy of it, then working off of that copy. It's essentially the same as importing the character, yeah? I actually have to do that with my other rig for this cartoon, Rakitty. There are some weird issues around missing images when I import the character from the library, so I just avoid doing that entirely. I've been meaning to make a new, simpler rig for him but I haven't yet. :)

    • @matusuhercik9829
      @matusuhercik9829 6 лет назад

      Thnks - I choose way without reference layers at rig. I preferred reference from library for later update graphics or rig and then update in scenes.

    but why dont work/ dont move when i move orginal layer shap. / helpplzzzzzz

    • @MarsHock
      @MarsHock  8 лет назад

      Sometimes the reference layer and original layer can get out of sync with each other. Try right clicking on the reference layer itself and selecting "Update Layer Reference". You can also try looking at the reference layer's timeline - you should see a keyframe on Frame 0 for almost every animatable property. Try right clicking on these and selecting "sync channel with original".
      Good luck :)

    This is helping a lot. However you are talking a little too fast and I gotta keep back tracking it over and over again to see what you're doing. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to put an arm over to the front so that you can see it even tho the body layer is behind the clothing. Thank you for the video!

    • @MarsHock
      @MarsHock  7 лет назад

      Oh, this is nice feedback, thank you. When I do more of these I'll slow down my speech a little.
      For your arm, if you have the upper arm and lower arm on separate layers, you can use "Enable animated layer order" in your group/bone layer options, so when the lower arm and hand move in front of the body, just move that layer above the body layer. Then rearrange the layers again if you need the arm to go behind the body instead.
      Alternatively, you could have two copies of your arm rig - one positioned behind, and one in front. Then animate the Visibility of the layers. This might be the better option depending on how you drew and rigged the character.
