AF-S is 'single focus', AF-C is 'continuous focus', also, it would have been better to hit the Info button, rather than using Live View, for the purpose of demonstrating these adjustments. Two more settings that I would consider to be very important and should definitely be on any list of 'Settings to change on the Nikon D7200', would be (1) to assign the AE-L/AF-L button to 'Auto On' so focusing and shooting have separate buttons, rather than having to half-press the shutter button to focus (2) to assign the Movie Record button to 'ISO', so that you don't have to use that ridiculously-placed ISO button on the back of the camera. With these two changes, you can focus and recompose without switching out of continuous focus and also adjust ISO settings without involving your left hand at all. I hope these suggestions are helpful.
Excellent video! Thanks. Some of us, probably because of the advent of automated camera phones, have forgotten what some of the Nikon controls do. Then, when we bring out the Nikons for kids’ birthday parties, Christmas events and family vacations, we are suddenly ham-handed and miss a lot of shots.
I shoot exclusively in RAW, and this is fine for transmitting photos to a phone, as I believe Nikon's app automatically converts it when downloading to the phone.
As @GotToHelenBach mentions below, for viewfinder photography, AF-S is SINGLE servo mode - it locks focus with each half-shutter button press. AF-A is a semi-auto mode that locks focus like AF-S BUT if detects movement of the subject forward or backwards it will switch to AF-C mode and track the subject until it is stationary or you release the shutter. For liveview photography the choices are AF-S (single-servo AF) and AF-F (full-time servo AF). See page 83 and 84 of your D7200 manual.
Great little camera, it was the last crop camera I bought before full frame and im eyeing the d500 now but I use my 7200 for all my macro stuff and birds when I do that. It shoots great with fx lenses which is all I’ve ever bought so when I went to start buying fx cameras I had a pretty good collection of fx lenses already. There aren’t too many stand out dx ones out there but a handful.
Great video. I shot with a Nikon D7000 for a while and upgraded to a D7200. It is a really great camera. Thanks for this video. It was well done and I intend on trying out all your suggestions. To be honest, I am not sure about rear focusing but will try it out. All the best to you.
Hi, nice tips. Also, does Nikon d7200 have the ability for AF Fine tune by pressing AF and movie button in same time? It sould appear display massage: Before, fix the camera in place and check that it is focused. Proceed?
Picture Control settings apply only to your JPEG preview, so if you set camera to shoot RAW, pictures was always had flat profile as you want it to be. You can also set the OK button in menu section f1 to make quick zoom on the preview of your photo so you dont need to click magnifying button multiple times. I hope that this help someone ;)
Holy shit, that zoom OK button tip is brilliant - I've got a couple fully manual lenses, and sometimes focusing by zooming in with live view to make sure it's perfectly sharp is exactly what I need. Great tip, I hate smashing the magnifying button until I'm close enough.
I really liked your short tutorial and I will give it a try to the settings mentioned here. I was wondering if you have any tutorial for the Nikon Coolpix P1000. Thank you
Active D-Lighting does not affect RAWs. It affecs jpgs only so it is worth to have it always on becasue you do not edit jpegs, you edit raws. and when you need a photo w/o editing you have jpg with active d-lighting which works really fine. thanks for a video.
Hi jerad nice tips, can you help me with this i got a good price for the D7200 but is has 59000 shutter count on it,is that to much or is it still good?thank you.
Shooting RAW + Jpeg seriously kills your buffer/shooting speed - be aware if you are shooting sports/fast action and running Burst mode ;) I learnt that the hard way :)
@@crxracer805 I use raw+jpeg with dual card only when I have to pult the card into a pc at the moment and use my photo directly. So I don't need PP, otherwise is useless, even with backup purpose.

Hello, I have question about nikon d7200, why red buttons for video record not working , and what to do. I bought new of nikon d7200 couple weeks ago . do yo have solutions . thank you
if your camera will allow you to to assign AE-L to the shutter release, you can focus, meter and then lock before shooting. I don't know about the D7200 but on my D750 its under timers/AE-lock Custom Settings menu C1
Unfortunately, my D7200 is at the shop right now, it has had a few rough days. I will try the back button focus tip as soon as I get it back. That seems to be very handy and I've had the need for it before. I have tried some of the things you said here. Me too, the first thing I did when I get any new camera is to turn off the beep, I hate it on any camera, even my phone camera.
Good tips for sure. May I ask for your recommendation for lens as I find the kit lens 18-140 is not as sharp as I like even though it is good for the price. Many thanks.
Kit lenses tend to do that. What kind of shooting do you predominately prefer? Nikon has a 70-300mm (f3.5/5.6G) while not super fast is very sharp for less than ~$400. They make more than one and the VR1 version is the one to which I refer. 50mm f1.8 (G Series) is a nice prime at the other end of the spectrum for a little over $200. Just two of *many* great Nikon lenses.
Hopefully someone gets back to me, with regards to changing AF modes, does it always switch back to default settings after switching camera modes? Like from auto-scenery-aperture.
How can I change the info box that's blac on white or white on black to the three round dials like in my other nikons. It's so much more clear that way and I swear I had it on here but can't find a way in the book or the camera. Thanks buddy.

You don't have to shoot in RAW + JPG for downloading to your phone (at least on iOS). I download the RAW file and it automatically converts it. I can upload to Facebook or Instagram from just downloading the RAW file.
Great tips. Some of them I already use, and some will surely be very useful. Since this camera has two card slots, I use one to store a photo on raw and another on jpeg mode. Be sure that the card on the 1st slot have more storage capacity. I wanted to move from a Nikon D7000 to a new one, for the sensors have evolved a great deal since then and went for a D7500. But I was disappointed to know that Nikon had taken out tree features I live very much, i.e. two card slots, preview of DOF and Non-CPU lens. The latter is my favorite, since I turns the camera fully compatible with manual AI lenses, and I have many of them.

Sadly but true which doesn't make sense. I have the D7200 as well. I also have the D5300 and that lets you shoot at 1080p 60fps with no crop but uses full DX sensor.

Hi, would appreciate if you kindly suggest which are the lenses for Nikon D7200? which one is the sharpest? which one is a 'must have'? I am not a professional, mostly click portrait of my kids and love clicking surroundings when travelling.
Nikon 35 mm f 1.8 is inexpensive, good "standard" lens, equiv. to 50 mm on full frame. Great for nature, street, concerts. Very light and small. More expensive but good for events is Sigma 17-50 f2.8. Though I wish it went a little longer. Nikon 60 mm micro f 2.8 has been wonderful for me for macro photos. Very sharp and focuses very close. Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED for landscapes has been lovely, also. But not bright enough for night sky.

Thanks, this is a great learning video. I am thinking of stepping up to a D7200 from a D90 which is an F-mount, will my D90 lens fit & work on a D7200 ?
Other than the new mirrorless "Z" camera, every Nikon SLR and DSLR ever built can accommodate ANY lens Nikon has ever made (yes, provided that they are "F"-mount lenses). The AF may or may not work, depending on whether or not your body has a built-in focus motor, which the D90 and D7xxx do have. The lower-level D3xxx and D5xxx do not have a built-in focus motor and, for those, you must use newer AF lenses which have the AF motor in the lens. The advantage of having the focus motor in the camera body is that you have the ability to use older (and, therefore, less expensive AF lenses).
one more things please. I usually fined problem with full photo .full body photo is not in good quality .I don't know why .what sitting should I follow when I shoot full body . (someone standing up )???
Thanks for the video. why i never get a green dot focus confirmation when looking through the view finder ? i only see a white dot to the bottom left .
It is probably the focus method you have selected. I would suggest changing focus methods. You can also turn on and off the ability to see focus preview on the screen.
Hello! Thank you for the great video! I just have one questions and its that im trying to get the camera to focus automatically without me pressing the shutter button halfway during live view movie mode. Do you happen to know how to do this? Cause ive seen other cameras do this
Good video. NOV 3 2017, got good deal on used D7200, used AF Micro Millor 55 f/2.8 and a new DX 35 f/1.8. Neve used any Nikon DSLR, set up all major cusotm settings (no manual in English) and got OK pics in bad office light with the 55mm. Nice. have 3 Pentax APSC bodies and 15 lenses cheap to expensive, lots of overlapping FL. WIll be trading 2 bodies and hald the lenses in, taking the loss. I like what I see so far an want antother lens or two and next year another Nikon body even also D750. Reason why is huge number of bad shots that are wide or deep city scape with soft faces - that is when I see a person close or mid distance and do everyrthing I can with the best Pentax CAF setting all AF points on and back-button, mostly get mushy faces. I surrender, Nikon seems my best choice. PS - holding on a an a6000 and a few decent low cost primes for APSC E-mount. SONY FE good glass and a new body too was just too expensive.
I like back button focus but on the 7100 and 7200 the AEL AF ON button is a bit too far away....SO far it is the only thing I have not liked about the 7100. Some of the other model split these and put AF On closer t the right which sounds like a small issue but it is noticeable.
I am a new to photography. I have bought D7200 2 days back, I am not able to get in to autofocus menu after pressing that button on left which you have shown. Is that mean my camera is defective? Please help so that I can get it replaced. Thank you.
+akshay indurkar The menu may be different in other countries or perhaps with a firmware update. I wish I could check but I don't have this camera anymore.
Hi man. Good and useful tips and info. But I need help a bit with understanding of active D-light and why you turning it of if you want the flat profile. I mean, if im not mistaken, D-Light lightens shadows and darkens highlights a bit. So basically makes lower contrast and therefor more flat picture. Isnt the point of flat profile to have flat picture with high dynamic range, and because of that have more room to work on in post production? Isnt Active D-Lighting made to increase cameras dynamic range? Hope someone gives me info and though on that. Ty
Am I lame for wanting this camera as my 1st camera in 2019? It would be my very first camera period, going to be using it mainly for photographs. It's still between the Cannon t7i or this Nikon 7200. I would love to have an articulating screen but this Nikon's specs seem to be ahead of most cameras around this price (Under 1k). I understand the photographer makes the camera not the other way around but still. Any thoughts anbody??? Opinions & insight would be greatly appreciated.
Well, this is the one that I've picked. It's a heavy/solid camera; that's first for me. Secondly, as you have mentioned, this camera is nicely equipped and now well under $1000. I would also like the rotating/articulating screen and the touchscreen but to get that, I lose other features that I want. For me (my position) the T7i is plastic junk; that's my position in regard to the Canon. I did study the D5600 but that is a smaller bodied camera; it is smaller (less of a camera) and I believe (from memory) there is no headphone jack on the D5600. Also, major for me, is the fact that the D5600 does not have an "autofocus motor"; for me, that's major. If I'm going to spend right at $1,000, I want something that I can notice in my hand; a heavier camera will also be much more stable to hold. The D500 is another consideration but that one is well over $1,000. Also, the older lenses will fit the 7200, so, use the older lenses with the 7200's "autofocus motor" or set it to manual and use the newer lenses (I'm still researching the lenses but I'm hoping that that will work)... diversity... many options; that's what I look for. Nothing is perfect; any particular item (whatever it is) is going to have issues that a person would like to change. However, for the money and for how it's spec'd, I think the 7200 is fabulous. Right now (today) I can buy the 7200 body, with two lenses, SD Card, battery, battery charger, USB Cable, Strap, and more... for under $900... brand new (Amazon)!!! If after a period of time, I discover that the lenses could be better... no problem; I have under $900 invested in a nice camera, along with several other items for the camera; at that point, I will simply start investing in specific lenses. That's my plan. So, there ya go; buy the 7200 and make a change at some point in the future. However, I think the 7200 is going to be great for a long time.
How to change selective colour settings?i mean i want to know the suitable settings just during live photography shooting but not during the editing time.
Does anyone would know why my top two Frame size/frame rate, 1920x1080;50p and 1920x1080;60p are greyed out, so they cant be selected in the video menu section? I assume it's because of another setting somewhere, but which one is stopping me from selecting either of these two settings?
Did you guys find the answer? I was surprised he didnt mention this - what you need to do is increase the crop factor for the videos. You'll get a slightly more cropped picture, but it allows the camera to produce video at the fast frame rates. Just search RUclips for "d7200 60fps video" to get lots of guides
I use this Camera for film production! I have some examples of cinematic footage and product feature videos. Check them out and feel free to ask questions!
Can anyone help me ? In my D7200 , in the movie setting menu , the Frame size /frame rate is 1920×1080 ; 30p . But I try to set it at 1920×1080 ; 60p which is disabled. When I select it , the message shows that , " This option is not available at current settings or in the camera's current state " . What should I do ?
I just watched your (very helpfull!) video and I thought I heard that you were putting a link to your back-focus video, but I don't see it? Is it my problem or is it just not there? :p

Hi i just bought a new Nikon D7200, but my record button isn't functioning, please how do i set it up
i can't see the exposure meter in live view like in your video at 2:19min
You ain't in manual
@@kbachani229 lol..
one more things please.
I usually fined problem with full photo .full body photo is not in good quality .I don't know why .what sitting should I follow when I shoot full body . (someone standing up )???
I only ever see one focus point in my playback. Not Like the ones you showed. Any idea why?
Thanks for the video.
why i never get a green dot focus confirmation when looking through the view finder ? i only see a white dot to the bottom left .
It is probably the focus method you have selected. I would suggest changing focus methods. You can also turn on and off the ability to see focus preview on the screen.
Hello! Thank you for the great video! I just have one questions and its that im trying to get the camera to focus automatically without me pressing the shutter button halfway during live view movie mode. Do you happen to know how to do this? Cause ive seen other cameras do this
Many thanks for your video.

Some of the other model split these and put AF On closer t the right which sounds like a small issue but it is noticeable.
can i change
aperture value during live mode in manual priority mode ...
pleaase help
i bouguh new D7200 how to set for good quility photos and video?
Off subject question but can you tel me what Lens you have on during this video? Thank you!
Looks like the Nikkor 18-140 (3.5-5.6). I think.
Akshay , check if the lock on the rocker dial is ON of OFF
Especially in RAW dslr not giving high continuous click burst
great tutorial ive never used my d7200 because it looks so complicated and ive only used af
Ty
There is always more than one way to do anything. This was well done clear and concise. Keep up the good work.
It’s gonna be my first DSLR too. Cheers. Yay!
On the Lightroom app for iPhone you can edit raw photos straight from your camera
Looking for an answer to this one myself.
It has to do with the crop mode. You have to choose the 1.3× crop in the video section. It will enable those options.
Did you guys even paid attention to my comment? I gave you guys the answer.
its the picture mode or whatever. you have to be in 1.3x crop, as the dv option doesn't allow it
Thank you very much. From the Philippines
Mine doesn't have the 1080p 60 fps option, only 30 fps
i shoot raw and i use a app that coverts the images to jpeg so i may import to lightroom
hi. wich app ?
Absolutely Perfect explanation saved me so much time hahaha now i understand what i am reading TY
I use this Camera for film production! I have some examples of cinematic footage and product feature videos. Check them out and feel free to ask questions!
Will all these settings work when you shoot strictly wildlife? Especially birds?
Shoot only raw, it's faster, and set it to 12bit instead of 14 bit, it's even faster.
Thanks for your tips. I learned at least 3 new things.
Great little tutorial. Thank you!
Still rockin the D7200 (along with D810/D750/D500)... great for portraits with the 85/105/180... kudos on the great review! (@ selectmodelevents)
You have to select 1.3x crop sensor area in order to shoot at 1080p 60fps
Awesome instruction - easy to follow!
Good morning. I lived in Brazil. How to shoot with dark background so perfect?
I just watched your (very helpfull!) video and I thought I heard that you were putting a link to your back-focus video, but I don't see it? Is it my problem or is it just not there? :p
+Tinne Jacobs it should be lived in the end. If not, just go into our video feed and scroll down a bit, it will be there. I will get the link added to the description later today. Sorry about that.
I could not find it either..... I search RUclips so here it is ruclips.net/video/gc_SM_H22lg/видео.html
For some reason i cannot get my d7200 to go into the setting of 1080p at 60 fps. Only 30 fps ? Any ideas ?
Sensor has to be changed to crop mode. The sensor size has to be shrank for the increased frame rate.
Nikon für immer 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤
Great video thanks so much!!!
How in the hell do you download RAW I can only download Jpeg only Is there a program that I have to get to download into my computer.
You are incorrect about NEF / RAW not being processed by iphone software. It will be all means allow you to transfer it via wifi and share it on social media. The utility is called WMU and it is fully able to use RAW.
great d7200 series, really helps
