Magic definitely hurt the Lakers. Think of it this way. When any of us are looking for a new job, one of the things we look at is the reviews of former employees on what they have to say. You look at pay, management, OT, etc. If you see anything that raises a red flag you might not want to go to that company. Same thing applies to players looking at the Lakers. Magic made negative comments and tries to hide behind he wants to recruit. His words could have just stopped any prospective free agents from trying to come to LA Lakers.

I blame the Lakers. Magic told them he wasn't going to be full time. The Lakers should have said, either he was all in, or not. The Lakers gave him and out.

He made terrible decisions: Lopez, Randle, Russell, and Zubac -- to name but four. He got played by the New Orleans GM, creating discontent among the Lakers players when word got out that Magic offered basically the entire team for AD. Magic was rarely at the office, so why would anyone trust him to be making the right decisions? Magic Johnson wanted a pass on working hard. He wanted clout he hadn't earned to make important decisions as a GM.
What probably happened is that Jeanie Buss, foolishly, gave Magic the position with plenty of power to make decisions. Then she watched him not show up to work and make a bunch of stupid decisions. Then Magic is like, "I need to make this very important decision now." And she was like, "Uhm, let's maybe get some other people to sign off on your great ideas." Magic lost his credibility because of his poor work ethic and poor decisions. Naturally. Then he whined about how he can't lead without the power to make decisions. Nah, you had the power but showed yourself unworthy of it. Jeanie is to blame for hiring him and for not firing him once she lost faith. She should have known he would throw her and the Lakers under the bus, which is exactly what he did. Magic Johnson held his own and I loved how he handled all of this because he knows his job and what he's about... when all that was compromised when he was doing the Lakers a favor... okay?... He doesn't owe the Lakers anything; he put his work in and I guarantee you he made more money for that organization from 1979 until now than they made for him... so Magic Johnson owes them nothing... the Lakers get what they deserve treating this man the way they did... you don't treat people like that if you hire them to do a job when it comes to actual basketball operations... let Magic put his team together with people he trusts and let him run the basketball side and get out of his way.... Based upon what was said in the interview, there was no real order to what was going on and we see the results - Magic Johnson should have nothing to do with the Lakers aside from getting money from them.
