I have a 1996 hse p38 366,000 kms runs like a dream. Spent money along the way on maintenance and an engine rebuild at 250 kms. I drive the car every day and go Offroad most weekends and holidays. Dont know if I will buy another one because the one I have will last me out. Can't ask for more than that from a car

I had 7 land rovers in my life and 6 of them were free problem ive always kept them in a fair shape and did my own maintenance i currently one a lr3 2007 with 290miles and only did the recommended service and did not get a single problem only change the compressor and two front suspension which was just a precaution and help the car reliability i would have to say that i owned mb audi bmw and ford chevy and dodge and land rover is by far the best cars if you maintain then right and buy the good models for example 2003-2005 range rovers had timing chain because of the bmw engine i do not recommend so to me nothing has beaten land rovers

i got a RR SC MY2008 which is superb and better than BMW X5 MY2010. From on-road perspective, X5 does accelerate faster than RR, however overall experience including reliability, RR is better. fuel consumption between x5 50i and RR 4.2SC are more or less the same, notoriously bad.
I guess you could say I've been lucky. All I've had to do with my '96 is change the crank sensor, and a MAF sensor. No more than any other SUV. I also did a coil spring conversion on mine, so that took away most of the problems. Also if you look on the internet, the basic engineering of the RR is very good. Box frame, Rover V8, ZF Tranny, Borg Warner transfer case. The only real problems are the electrics, but if there replaced with NA Electronics like on mine, there's nothing much to go wrong.
And I'll admit that parts are hard to come by, but I have a few connections that get me all the parts I need. I love my Rover. Luxury beyond you're wildest dreams, and it can keep up off road with just about anything. The only thing I don't like about it is that you have to run it on premium, and it is quite thirsty. But otherwise, it's never let me down.
I think people are forgetting that the Range Rover was the first true Sports Utility Vehicle while things like the Land Rover and Jeep where just Utility Vehicles.
I have both a 1995 Range Rover Classic LWB 25 Anniversary Edition with 196,263. The Classic is beautiful and the Ride is awesome when not in the repair shop every other Month. I also have a 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ62 with 341, 112 Miles. The Ride is slow, it sucks up gas like it was free, but my Ex Wife who hated the Land Cruiser called it," Mr. Reliable". On the Road or in the Trails it is unstopable. I spend a year in the UAE, and went on several Desert Safari's. I would ask the Middle Eastern Men driving the Land Cruisers, Why not Land Rovers? They would all say, Land Rovers could never take the beating like the Land Cruisers. I know that for a fact.
Maintenance on this car is quite expensive but If you can fix pretty much everything by yourself, It is the best thing to own. I just finished installing a Steering column all alone in my driveway after purchasing a fairly used one for a mere $31 at junkyard. A genuine new steering column on this car is extremely expensive as in $4000-$7000 range!
I found my range to be secretly ghetto. There were things in the Range that I found missing that I had in my Merc ML. And not to mention the keys would get stuck in the ignition, the car always needed a repair.
@CGTBLA1974 They have been bought by other car companies so they could copy the technology of the chassis suspension and drive system. Earlier versions that were based on the old 3.5L GM small block V8 (bored out to 3.9L then 4.0L were fine for what they were initially intended for but, like most vehicles, need to be correctly serviced at the correct intervals. Build quality improved from it's initial concept as a rural farm vehicle over the years to make it a Kings Rd cruiser.
@m4xrb To be able to turn a dial to overcome the terrain you are on and perform extremely well is something every 4wd manufacturer would give their first and last born to be able to do it as well as the RR. This is no immitation, this is the real thing, and a 4wd (don't call them SUV) that can go offroad if needed. If you just want bling , get a cayenne or BMW.
Besides you forgot one of the most important ones. Suspension travel. ground clearance, wheel size and lowratio gearbox are also essential. VW synchro, has 4x4, lockers, and a tough chassis, but i wouldn´t call them good offroaders
Gas milage and everything is fine with me...the cost um worried about is the instance on an 18 year old driver(2003-2004 model)...he has never had any traffic violations but being 18 and male is going to mean 5gs a year...what do u guys pay in insurance on a range rover? He has also been looking into an escalade as well. Any suggestion and maybe a comparison of the 2?

I've had a range rover for over a year and only thing to fail was a small resistor, cost £35 to fix, Any bad reliability issues is down to bad owners not getting a qualified mechanics who know what they are doing. This is the greatest all round car you can get.
@Rangeroversport12 Also, when you take your range rover sport off road and you roll it maybe, on its side. you cant repair that yourself. open the bonnet and you cant touch the engine. roll a defender and you can tap out the dents cos its just sheet metal. buy a new mirror for 20 quid off ebay and simply screw it on. maybe one of the lights got smashed... buy a new bulb for 3 quid and the glass for 5 quid and screw it on....

Remember the classic RR and when it came on the market, probably too young, well they were way ahead of their time. toyota came with all coil suspension, 4w discs on the market 20 years later.And they and others will always be followers.The market dictates changes.
@Sennakami technecly the Landrover (Range Rover) and jeep are actualy closely related due to the fact that Land Rover based their vehicals on the WW2 Jeep and to be honest the Land rover by Land Rover is more the offroader, though the Range Rover ( is called The LR's urban cousin) can do offroading just as well as the Land Rover

Their resale value is also among the worst if not the worst in any segment, mostly because no one wants to own them once warranty is expired due to poor reliability. These are official numbers based on amount of repairs needed and average resale value. The cars that always rank best in reliability and resale are typically Toyota SUV, mostly Land Cruiser/LX, or 4runner/Lexus GX/Prado.
Philbert Christo It's not actually. That title goes to the Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol actually. They are the 2 most sold SUV's in the middle East. Even in Senegal Africa, where I used to travel to, a long time ago, in the 80's you used to see a lot of Land Rovers, but not anymore, now it's all Toyota's because of reliability. Here in the U.S. the only people or companies that purchase Range Rovers are ones looking for a Tax break. What happens is, if you loos a lot of money, then you don't pay it in Taxes. The only way to do that is to purchase a car that depreciates very fast, then all the money it depreciated you can deduct in Taxes. Since the Range Rover depreciates so much, companies purchase a few just to claim a lot of losses. But that's mostly it, otherwise, not too many people buy them anymore. I think a big mistake Rover made is they were sold to BMW and then Ford. BMW sucked in reliability and so did Ford at that time. So what they need to do now is partner with a company that makes reliable technology they can use. I still think Range Rovers are the most beautiful SUV's ever made, I just wish they were reliable.

Considering in what exactly it is the best SUV: high price and luxury saloon? For me, i love TLCs. TLC are unbreakable piece of metal. Range Rover is little expensive for me and the service costs are higher. But Land cruiser are so cheap to service (because nothing breaks). Just put the oil and forget for one year. How about Range Rover?
I have owned one. Their air suspensions suck balls. Otherwise it’s actually a very capable vehicle if you have the right tires. Parts will kill you financially if you need repairs.

Poor guy has never seen a real offroad machine. The Land Rover line, be it the Discovery, Range Rover, or Defender will put to shame most other brands offroad. Stock or modified comparison. They are designed from the factory to go offroad which you can tell by going undearneath one. Most other 4x4's are designed to drive on the free way and they just add 4WD. Do some research before you do some more ignorant rants please.

There loosely screwed together by a bunch of idiots in Detroit, and they roll over at the slightest curve. I got over 153,000 miles on mine, and it is the best 4x4 I've ever had. Nothing stops it, and it's impeccably practical. The Rover 4.6 V8 I got it mine eliminates my buddy's '93 Cherokee on the quarter mile.

LCs and LRs are both legendary, for different reasons. LCs are reliable (relatively), but boring one trick ponies. If I want a basic workhorse, I'd pick one. LRs, especially the LR3/4/RR/RRS, offers excitement and variety. They're every bit as capable as a LC off road, but try getting a LC to run 8:20 at Nurburgring or top out at 180 mph. Downside? Poor reliability and expensive to fix. If I wanted a luxury toy, I'd pick one. Re-sale can work against the buyer too. Let's face it, few of us can afford to off road a brand new RR or LC200. That means buying used. If I have $10k to spend, and can get either a 2005 LR3, 2004 L332, or 1997 LC80, I'm more likely to lean towards the LR3. As cool as the 80 series is, the LR3 is miles ahead in on road performance and comfort.
I watched a program on TV where 40 year old Range Rover, completed a off road course so easy, well a Lexus really struggled over the whole course in fact it did not complete the course....

The 4.4 V8 is a fantastic engine. Reliability much better from '08 on. Best 4x4xfar.

@TheMeisterize It would still do better than any of it's competitors, It still has the best wheel travel, gear ratios, and dynamics of any other in its class. You don't seem to know very much, Do you? Remember the classic RR and when it came on the market, probably too young, well they were way ahead of their time. toyota came with all coil suspension, 4w discs on the market 20 years later.And they and others will always be followers.The market dictates changes.
@Sennakami technecly the Landrover (Range Rover) and jeep are actualy closely related due to the fact that Land Rover based their vehicals on the WW2 Jeep
and to be honest the Land rover by Land Rover is more the offroader, though the Range Rover ( is called The LR's urban cousin) can do offroading just as well as the Land Rover

Philbert Christo I don't know what your talking about my friend. They are continually ranked among lowest if not the Lowest cars in reliability. Their resale value is also among the worst if not the worst in any segment, mostly because no one wants to own them once warranty is expired due to poor reliability. These are official numbers based on amount of repairs needed and average resale value. The cars that always rank best in reliability and resale are typically Toyota SUV, mostly Land Cruiser/LX, or 4runner/Lexus GX/Prado.

Philbert Christo It's not actually. That title goes to the Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol actually. They are the 2 most sold SUV's in the middle East. Even in Senegal Africa, where I used to travel to, a long time ago, in the 80's you used to see a lot of Land Rovers, but not anymore, now it's all Toyota's because of reliability. Here in the U.S. the only people or companies that purchase Range Rovers are ones looking for a Tax break. What happens is, if you loos a lot of money, then you don't pay it in Taxes. The only way to do that is to purchase a car that depreciates very fast, then all the money it depreciated you can deduct in Taxes. Since the Range Rover depreciates so much, companies purchase a few just to claim a lot of losses. But that's mostly it, otherwise, not too many people buy them anymore. I think a big mistake Rover made is they were sold to BMW and then Ford. BMW sucked in reliability and so did Ford at that time. So what they need to do now is partner with a company that makes reliable technology they can use. I still think Range Rovers are the most beautiful SUV's ever made, I just wish they were reliable.

@ilovemesomechicken dude a new rover is in the $120k and the RR Sport Supercharge are in the $90k with 500 hp jaguar engine and a high grade finished interior with ALL real wood and aluminum trim....and standard airbag suspension system for numerous off-road settings....and five proximity cameras.....and an ice cold cooling box for drinks lets not mention the drag queen my escalade platinum/tahoe/yukon is instead of the range rover that all 4x4 suvs try to be
when you want fast car you will buy a sport car, Range rover its the most prestige suv on the world, and not bad in off road, ( sorry for my eng)

Considering in what exactly it is the best SUV: high price and luxury saloon? For me, i love TLCs. TLC are unbreakable piece of metal. Range Rover is little expensive for me and the service costs are higher. But Land cruiser are so cheap to service (because nothing breaks). Just put the oil and forget for one year. How about Range Rover?

I have owned one. Their air suspensions suck balls. Otherwise it’s actually a very capable vehicle if you have the right tires. Parts will kill you financially if you need repairs.

Poor guy has never seen a real offroad machine. The Land Rover line, be it the Discovery, Range Rover, or Defender will put to shame most other brands offroad. Stock or modified comparison. They are designed from the factory to go offroad which you can tell by going undearneath one. Most other 4x4's are designed to drive on the free way and they just add 4WD. Do some research before you do some more ignorant rants please.

@WedidLandONtheMOON Well, sure you could buy a Jeep, if your in the mood for overheating. I find Jeeps too utilitarian, unrefined, and compared to my Range Rover, a pile of junk. There loosely screwed together by a bunch of idiots in Detroit, and they roll over at the slightest curve. I got over 153,000 miles on mine, and it is the best 4x4 I've ever had. Nothing stops it, and it's impeccably practical. The Rover 4.6 V8 I got it mine eliminates my buddy's '93 Cherokee on the quarter mile.

Range rover was the very first SUV, they invented the term, it is defined by range rover, and they were and are by far the most luxuryous and still fairly capable vehicle in the world = they are the best SUV. Not meaning the best offroader in the world.
Hate it when people don´t get the term of SUV, have even seen the landrover defender and hummve categorized as SUV´s and that´s bullshit, they are 4x4´s or "jeeps" not SUV´s

m4xrb then you have clearly never operated one off-road. We have seven Land Rover / Range Rovers in our fleet of exploration vehicles, and I can assure you, a Range Rover MKIII gives up nothing to a Discovery 4 in stock form, nor would a RRC give up anything to a Discovery I. I have them all. . .

Search for "Toyota vs Disco" by Peter! The "fact" that Toyota or lexus is the best suv offroad is the biggest bullshit I have ever heard! Maby on road but they don't stand a chance when it comes to a discovery 3 or 4 offroad!
LCs and LRs are both legendary, for different reasons. LCs are reliable (relatively), but boring one trick ponies. If I want a basic workhorse, I'd pick one.
LRs, especially the LR3/4/RR/RRS, offers excitement and variety. They're every bit as capable as a LC off road, but try getting a LC to run 8:20 at Nurburgring or top out at 180 mph. Downside? Poor reliability and expensive to fix. If I wanted a luxury toy, I'd pick one.
Re-sale can work against the buyer too. Let's face it, few of us can afford to off road a brand new RR or LC200. That means buying used. If I have $10k to spend, and can get either a 2005 LR3, 2004 L332, or 1997 LC80, I'm more likely to lean towards the LR3. As cool as the 80 series is, the LR3 is miles ahead in on road performance and comfort.
I watched a program on TV where 40 year old Range Rover, completed a off road course so easy, well a Lexus really struggled over the whole course in fact it did not complete the course....
A Toyota being the best of anything is a laugh, coming from a Supra owner, some like them, but please don’t call them the best of anything.
