I have a new foster baby at my house, Gunner, and he is absolutely the sweetest boy (Mastiff/Lab mix, we think) and before he heads to his forever home, I'd love to be able to walk him! He still needs to gain weight but he's currently 91 lbs. Where do I start? What equipment might work best for him considering his size? I would love nothing more than to be able to take him on a few mile walk everyday but I'm exhausted after 2 blocks.

I volunteer at a rescue and your videos have helped save more dogs than you could ever know. I use your techniques and have shown other volunteers them and the difference in the dogs has been incredible. I've seen dogs that no one would even look at go into the most wonderful homes and it is all because of the knowledge you share. I've even added a twist from our personal trainer for our own dogs with a slip lead fashioned into a gentle leader style for the more stubborn dogs. Please don't ever stop doing what you do.

Fantastic! Keep up the great work! I'm a fan of Rocky Kanaka's channel, where he goes in and works with shut-down or reactive dogs in the shelter situation, and it sounds like you're doing a similar thing. I'm sure it feels awesome when you get a dog to warm up and show their personality in a way that lets adoptive families see it will be a great addition to their home, and gives a good dog a whole new wonderful life.

It still astonishes me that people are more willing to say something is impossible than admit their are other ways to train a dog than 'positive only'. Great to see two dogs together. That synchronized sit near the end was beautiful! Your videos are always so helpful and informative:)

Most people believe if something has worked once it will work every time. I believe positive only training can work if you're starting with a puppy that doesn't have any issues. A dog with well established behaviour issues especially of the reactive dominant defiance or aggressive kind you're going to need some form of Correction. At least that is my experience. I currently have this German Shepherd rescue dog with a history of biting thinking I could win her over with love and rewards... 10 bites later, I'm willing to crack down on the bad behavior! Now that she's muzzle trained and I know what she knows the shenanigans are done.

Lena, even all positive trainers set limits for their pups and use withholding of reinforcement to get the dog to choose the right thing. That said, it takes longer to train without corrections. You must teach the dog what you want them to do first, and for a dog like these, you have to interrupt the bad behavior before you can teach them anything.

So many times people at the park have asked me how do I manage to walk my two dogs almost like if it is something out of this world... And when I tell them its up to structure and control they absolutely freak out telling me im abusing my dogs then. Meanwhile their dog is acting out crazy pulling, barking and all the "normal non-abusive stuff"... Thank you so much for all the quality content you post!

i had a similar situation you mention, i was at the vet with my 2 lab/rottie mixes, 1 is 13 months the other is 7 years, so we are in front of the vet and my dogs are in a break off leash, so this woman comes with a car and by the reaction of my older dog, i figured she had a dog in the car, so i put mine in the trunk of my car and i keep it open while i tell her that i have to do this in case her dog is little and my older dog is quick to go into prey drive. So lo and behold, she pulls this little doberman pincher out of the crate and i shit you not, the woman was about 180 cm, 65 kg wearing boots and this 1kg dog was pulling her over the parking lot towards the grass as he had to pee. He does his business they come back my way and i just step back and lift my hand and she saw how both dogs went in sit and were hyperfocused on my hand, so she says "oh how i wish mine was like that" and i respod with "order accountability discipline" and she was like " yeah we dont have any of those" goes to the vet, im still waiting my turn and i was getting antsy as i heard them talking and i went in and then i hear the vet say "not all discipline necessary means hitting the dog, there are many ways of discipline, he has been coming here a long time, i know him well and i can guarantee you he treats his dogs better than you treat yours" so at that point i walk in and im like "yo vet, give the lady a break, thats how all uneducated people think" and that hit home with the lady, she was a fancy lady i forgot to mention, Mercedes Benz, shoes worth more than me my car my both dogs combined, and she was going full Karen on me to the vet but in the end she came to see things my way and the vet told me that she came back to thank the vet for her words as they moved the lady to get herself and the dog into a program which was really working for them and i was happy, even tho she was trying to dunk on me and i get it, i look the way i look, always dirty and holes in clothes (immaggine dressing nicely with 2 lab/rotties) long hair beard so yeah i get how she would think the worst right away when someone like me mentions order accountability and discipline, in her shoes-not knowing better- i would probably think the same, thank my dogs i know better :D

You explain the whole picture and the small-but-significant details that make all the difference. Fantastic how fixing one dog helped so much, with the other dog taking their cue from the first dog. Today i just wanted to thank you Tom and whole Upstate Canine Academy. Me and my fiancee are prepairing for our Cane Corso. For me your vids are great skills reminder. For my lady you provide a tons of information that she will need to be a good leader for our future dog. She started to practice with her parents dog. One day she came back from walk and she told me that she managed to desensitize that dog to other dogs (pooch had real problem with dog reactivity). I took Heban (this is dogs name) for a walk next day and he didn't reacted on any dog, even when they barked at him. When i came home and asked how she did that she said "i just did what Tom is doing on youtube".
So thank you again - i will sleep well in the future knowing that she have this basic know-how to handle dog the proper way ;)

I adopted a 3 year old beagle mix mutt that had been back to the same shelter three times already in her short life. They told me she was a "difficult dog" and would need a very patient owner to take her in.
It was clear once I got her home she had never had any boundaries or leash training in her life and didn't know how to direct her energy or calm her reactivity. I've been binge watching these videos and starting to lay the foundations for her. We're still working on the very basics but it's starting to click for her and the progress has been very encouraging.

Great video. The owner was so defeated at the beginning with what her previous trainers had said. To see her walking BOTH dogs with confidence and ease was very rewarding. Must admit i did think i hope her previous trainers see this video, and it might open their horizons to other techniques, cos let's face it different dogs with different owners will always need different types of training. There's never a one size fits all approach.

Tom's videos have helped immensely with our Catahoula Leopard dog, a very independent, loving and loyal but protective dog. Still learning to deal with sudden strangers or dogs in public popping up and our Sadie needing to react aggressively in a instance... whether she is by me standing or my sitting outside and her under a table. She also is slowly learning to quit standing up and jump or wanting to put her paws on you when standing or when I am sitting her 60 pounds of muscle trying to climb up. She is very touchy and affectionate and wants to reach out to touch or get on your lap.

I feel so helpless when me meet other dogs on our walks, sometimes i think its absoluty hopeless. He dont need to like other dogs, just walk by and dont try to attack them. He is such a lovely dog and can be so friendly when he get a Chance to walk with other dogs to calm down, but everyone is so scared of his behavior. I am a special education teacher and fostered dogs for years and dealt with so many dogs given up because of behaviors like this and trainers telling them they couldn’t be fixed because they were positive only. I wish all owners would at least watch channels like yours to see it can be done but only with the full use of the operant conditioning model. It applies and works for animals and kids alike!

My GSD rescue and I would really benefit from the Dogtra. Your videos have helped a lot. Maverick is almost 9 and wouldn't let anyone in the shelter near him. I feel honored that he chose me, but he's extremely bad about resource guarding me. We're working on it and it is getting better. Thank you for all that you do!

I’m very happy to find your videos. I’ve been trying to get my labrabull trained for almost a year. She just made a year old on March 21 2022. Being disabled it’s hard to take her anywhere when she none stops pulls on the leash. My children won’t even come to see me if I don’t kennel her up first. I don’t want to get rid of my girl. She’s willing to learn and do things until others come around. Your videos are teaching me a new way to help her be a very happy dog. Thank you for being there to help us with our fur-babies.

Explaining the difference between the pull and the pop, and how to get leverage to pop is so crucial. Showing how to go towards the dog with the leash to be able to get it is a game changer. Thanks for that. I couldn’t imagine NOT correcting my dog when he does something wrong and can’t get my head around why you wouldn’t and why people get upset about it 🤦‍♀️.

Tom's videos have really opened my mind and made me realize that having an open minded training approach is the best way to see results for each dog!

I have a WONDERFUL dog who I have paid thousands for training. The last place used deprivation to train him with an eco collar & prong collar. He had no attention, pets for the 4 months she kept him. When he came home, he was well trained for about 2 weeks, then revolted against the ecollar and would tolerate the stim even on high & just ran away. I’m now attempting to recover his behavior without the negative ecollar, only the prong collar. We are doing well but it’s because I watch you on these advanced videos plus when he was very young I trained him with your basics. Thanx!!!

Always love hearing the intricate behavioural details of the dogs. Love that clarification of the proper use of positive reinforcement, so true! Even better to see the humans come to the realizations when you clarify to them what they have been doing versus what they should be doing and watching them see the results 👀 so rewarding.
I'll be entering all the 280c giveaways until I succeed! But even if it's awhile it's worth it 😎

Your videos have absolutely changed my entire relationship with my dog for the better. We rescued her 3 years ago and she was so fearful of going outside and being around other people she would completely shut down. She recently came with us to a small Christmas get together and you wouldn't even know it was the same dog.

Just moved to Texas from a very rural mountain town in Northern California and it’s been an uphill struggle to acclimate my 14 month old blue tick/ English lab puppy to all of the different people and dogs he comes across now, he went from only having contact with two people ever and only one dog his entire life along with only having scents from bear, mountain lion, deer, raccoon, turkey, squirrel, etc..and now he’s overwhelmed with the amount of people and dogs, watching your videos help tremendously, I’d buy your 280c if I had the money.

i have a plott hound mix and im so grateful to have found your videos. she is highly prey driven and nothing ive tried has made an impact on her listening to me. saving for your ecollar so i can have some freedom back and actually enjoy time with my dog outside without it being a job.

Tom Davis has opened up a whole new dimension for me in my approach to training my dogs and not stopping at just the basics..I started watching UCA because I have an 8 year old lab mix (Jack) and I just rescued a 1 year old pitbull (Obie). Jack is a good dog but he has always been anxiety ridden..fearful/skittish with unfamiliar things entering the house whether it be a person ..cardboard box etc. Delivery person rings the doorbell and its WW3..never had any issues with other dogs. Obie is great I got him from a co worker who had to change living situations and couldn't keep both littermates but he wound up going to the shelter first (no kill) I got him before he went into the system.. He comes from a good home, socialized with people and animals ..Obie was neutered at the shelter Jack is fixed also. The problem I have is even though I'm separating them and taking it slow Jack gets very reactive for example I block my staircase off with a gate to take Obie out jack will come halfway down the stairs and bark like he wants to kill the new guy, on the other hand I have a front room blocked off with another gate and ill call jack to the gate with Obie on the other side.. I will make them both sit lay etc. and they're fine no barking, parallel walks are no issue.. I'm just worried that they will never get along. Not that I plan on letting them run free unsupervised but I just want them to be able to coexist and walk by each other without freaking out. has anyone been in this scenario?
