Wow, this was really good. Makes me realize I know very little about training my dog properly. I'd like to see more of these types of videos.

Helpful. I learned from the part where he willingly walked away from the first toy. Thank You

I’d love to see this with a dachshund. They are so bull headed.

I adopted a small dog recently from a local shelter who has resource guarding and I seem to be one of those resources. I live up in the NEK and was hoping to find someone locally who can help me deal with this issue because I have no clue how to stop this. I just ran across this video. I too would like to see more videos on the subject.

I rescued a Husky who is very resource aggressive. He has been aggressive with my other Husky and my Pug. He bit my spouse last year. He nipped me pretty good tonight, after I got after him for growling at the Pug, after she jumped up on the bed where he was laying. How do I handle this appropriately. I really don't want to give him up, but he mostly does not listen. Otherwise he is very loving. It's like a split personality. We got him at approximately 3 1/2 years old. Thanks for any suggestions.

I’m surprised you only used a correction sound instead of a command. Wouldn’t that be confusing? Personally I use leave it in general or let go for tug.
I only use correction sounds for stuff I never want him to have access.

@@Kate98755 so instead of a command just make a “shhh” sound? How we use commands is up to us. I’ve only heard that used as a correction but to each his own.

@@Kate98755 Why are we arguing when from what I’m reading we are doing nearly the same thing?
Firstly a command can be whatever I want it to be it’s how I teach it that affects the outcome. I can say “coffee” if I feel like it. I use “wait” for impulse control training (this). I used a couple examples like Leave it as a GENERAL don’t want you to have that and let go when I want him to let go of tug or whatever. But I don’t use my “uh ah” correction unless he’s not following the command.

@@Kate98755 Hope that you have a blessed New Year. Well oops I thought we were sort of. Not hostile more a disagreement rooted from misunderstandings with my poor word choice. I am better with dogs than people and auto correct doesn’t help. 😬🙄

@@Kate98755 Resource guarding happens because they don’t understand possession like we do. Teaching them to leave it, and then giving them permission is EXACTLY how you teach them about possession. You’re assuming that just because you tell them leave it, they should never have it. That command goes out the window the next time they want that item, and you aren’t around…out of sight, out of mind.

So what happens if the dog just runs and gets one of the toys? Do you put him back to place? Take you out of his mouth and start again? This looks good as the dog complied on the video. Many thanks.

I would see if I could use first for him to let go of the object. Because of his history I wouldn't put my hand right up next to his mouth until he and I had been working together for quite some time. I want to set him up for success so if he was to get an object when he wasn't supposed to, I would do my best to negotiate either with food or another object. Then I would be able to reset and create what I wanted to with teaching him an "out" command.

HOW OLD IS THAT DOG PLEASE?

My dog does all of these things , but when he gets something when I’m not there! Then the resource begins .

Then he needs more boundaries or should be crated when you leave.
