I feel bad for Tods actor man. He is such a good actor and I can only imagine what he thinks when 90% of the Tod comments are about his weight. How about how seamlessly he brings back his long dead character of 6 years? Yes he gained weight. If anyone thinks that took away from the story they are a moron. Watch the damn movie and be thankful that Vince decided to give us even more of this awesome story.

I was surprised that there were so many who didn't like this movie. I thought it was a perfect, satisfying, and exciting conclusion to Jesse, Skinny, Badger and Todd.

I don’t get it, I really didn’t need to see this. Jessie without Walt was not half as entertaining to watch. I don’t even remember how it ended despite watching it more recently than Breaking Bad, whose ending I can remember.

Because people wanted something shocking, even if it is nonsensical and stupid, like Walt still being alive and going back to cooking or Jesse becoming a new Walt and building a new drug empire leading to a new series
And why people wanted that? I have no idea, sometimes it feels to me like some people never actually watched Breaking Bad, only the "I'm the one who knocks" and "Say my name" scenes along with the finale, left it at that, and act like Breaking Bad it's an action movie

The final 2 flashbacks made me emotional, the Walter one made me realize the corruption Walt undergoes. And the Jane one just made me sad that Jesse is free but lonely.

Can't say I hated Neil particularly. He's not a good person but I don't see that he's much worse than Jesse himself. I suppose I don't buy protagonist - centred morality.

I always wondered why there were no flashbacks involving Andrea. Her death was more recent, and Jesse, being in captivity, would have lots of time to dwell on his choice to escape. They even showed the Andrea/Brock photo to remind us of the leverage they used on him to cook. Jesse seemed to have moved on from Jane, even saying that Jane's death wasn't anyone's fault, not even her own. Could it be that after learning that Walt watched her die, reopened a wound?
Or could it be as simple as Emily Rios wasn't available to film? Maybe the writers thought if we bring Andrea back, we will have to include Brock. He would be much older and maybe they didn't want a different actor to play him.

The movie was gonna touch on brock. The ides being that we would hear Jesse's card to Brock being read out loud. Acording to Aaron it was amazing but for pacing reasons I believe Vince decided to not include it.
It’s simple really: Jesse didn’t have much of a connection with Andrea. He liked her fine, but he mostly loved her for Brock than Andrea herself (after all, he at first formed a relationship with her solely to sell her meth and only changed his mind after finding out she has a son) whereas for Jane, he loved her for who she was herself.
One guy replied to me in a comment section being like "Did we really need to see any of this flashback stuff?". The worst part is he was being serious..

@@dreworyan5652 You're looking at it wrong. It was Jesse's story and what happened after he escaped uncle jacks place. Were you one of those people that believed Walter was alive and he wasn't so you were let down? Or did you want him to rise from the grave and start cooking meth again? Yeah there is still some unanswered questions but this movie definitely is not a let down.
This was fantastic, savage! Using flashbacks as a mirror for the present narrative is the perfect tool. And Vince Gilligan's quiet storytelling is masterful. The man can make watching paint dry suspenseful. I was left feeling a little down after the story though, maybe because I was greedy and wanted more.
I felt the same way, only because this movie doesn't have as much re-watchability as the show. Like now that we know he escapes to Alaska, a lot of the movie feels superfluous. Also it doesn't necessarily build on the breaking bad canon all that much which makes it easy to feel disappointed. That being said, the more I've sat on the movie, the more I've realized that both of those things are okay. It was just meant to fill in the blanks in Jesse's story in an interesting way that provides closure. It undoubtedly achieved that and the more I watch videos like this the more I appreciate the approach Vince took. That being said, I think us hardcore BB fans will always want more because we love this story and its characters.
I thought the flashbacks were well-used to advance the narrative, also. They not only set up a dynamic to move the plot forward in a confrontational manner - they bookended well. I loved the movie, and as much as I would have liked to see Skyler, Marie, etc. - this made more sense. Thank you, for a well done breakdown of the proper use of flashbacks in 'El Camino', and in storytelling in general. :)

@@deg1studios I get that Marie was a pain, but I never really understood the vitriol aimed at Skyler. It always seemed to me that she was as much a victim of Walter's as anyone else.

She cheats on him, tries to divorce him, attempts to stop him from seeing his kids, which she justifies because he is a criminal. but then she becomes his accomplice, so how can she still justify those things. she gives a large amount of Walt's money to her lover, which is one of the douchiest things you can do, which he spends on a car. this also prevents walt from buying his and his family's second chance (from the vaccum cleaner guy). and throughout it all she is constantly a hinder to Walt and his transformation into Heisenberg (which is what the viewer wants to see)
@@deg1studios Well, I always felt her victimization led to her behavior. She wasn't perfect, God knows, but I believe her 'sins' pale in comparison to Walter's. Her actions felt more like an example of Stockholm syndrome, than being an active participant. She tried leaving and was blocked by Walter. Her primary goal was to protect her family - which is what Walter claimed, but admits by the end, that he did it all for himself. This is a generalization, and certainly not aimed at you personally; but I believe much of the antagonism aimed at the character of Skyler boiled down to simple misogyny and expectations of how women are 'supposed' to behave. I'm ashamed to say, as a fanfic writer myself, I've used flashbacks as a narrative crutch because of my narrative shortsightedness.

Godfather II I guess is the ultimate use of flashbacks in movies.
What about Once Upon a Time in America? That movie is the GOAT of flashback usage. Only thing that truly sucks is we never got the FULL movie presented to us, and have to accept the 3 hour version because the studios felt like an extremely long movie wasn't worth it financially.

*I noticed an editing error, in the finale Jesse tells Walt “then do it yourself” throws the gun on the ground walks away and escapes in the el Camino, yet in the movie he’s got that SAME gun.*
Its the gun that was in the glove compartment. It just happens to be the same model.
Is It really? I watched on my phone but looked like he just had it next to him from the start. I guess that make sense. They show in the flashback Todd kept it there before.
@@missiontobeaman3111 No, if you watch it again, you can see that when he sees the cops, he reaches into the glove compartment (because he closes it) to get the gun.
A more egregious mistake is that Jesse had a longer beard in El Camino which makes more sense but is inconsistent and can be seen when the screaming scene is put together

I was so happy when I heard about a BB movie because while I knew it would have great attention to detail, my experiences with both BB and BCS prove that Vince Gilligan doesn't seem to enjoy repeating himself much. It was always going to give us something great but you just can't quite predict where will he put it. I still kind of struggle between wanting this movie to be a well composed introspective piece of the character or an epic (hate the word but let's be honest here) action film that made an already dense story bigger, with a bit more fanservice, with tighter struggles and some eccentric cinematography here and there. I guess that's why I still find it so interesting despite not being "epic", because it did had quality but it wasn't predictable despite literally giving us what everyone wanted to know about what the hell happened to Jesse. It was surprisingly subversive despite being familiar and I guess that's kinda scary as a fan since we already have an established point of view of how a Breaking Bad story is told.

i liked el camino a lot and i’m glad they made it. it wasn’t necessary to the story but i enjoyed watching it. i feel like a lot of shows that try to make various spin-offs end up with a really subpar end result, but they did a great job with el camino. the acting was great and i’m glad we got to see a few characters for the last time. i liked that they added more depth to todd’s character and really explored how awful jesse’s time with the neo nazis was. jesse is my favorite character and aaron paul and the writers did an amazing job at concluding his story.
I think some of the audience was really unfair to the actors because it seems like a lot of people only focused on how they looked different. i mean, what did you expect? people age, they have to look different for other roles they’ve had to film, etc. obviously todd looked very different in el camino than he did in the last season of breaking bad, but the story was so engaging and jesse plemons’ acting was so good that i honestly didn’t notice past the first couple of minutes. i personally don’t think the actors’ appearances took away from the movie at all.

Well, considering the series i watched, it's the strongest actually. Seeing the Daniel's struggles was so deeply dramatic and powerful.
I've always thought Jesse was secretly as smart as Walt but just not as academic or good at science, and I'm glad in this movie he got the chance to step out of Walt's shadow and prove that.

Arron Paul sounds as emotional and open hearted as Jesse. (Though of course he's a great young actor, not a screwed up kid who must struggle to Ultimately find himself.
I loved every single second of this film. I've always related with Jesse Pinkman's character; a kind soul in a world where he doesn't quite fit, waiting for an opportunity to roam free. So, it was very emotionally powerful to see him smile as he drove down the Alaskan road. And you were right there with him, because Gilligan's ability to put you right into the shoes of the characters is uncanny.

Dew I was waiting for a slow pace movie cause that’s what is so great about Breaking Bad, but the story was just bad. Jesse escapes, he gets money from Todd’s apartment and he disappears. That’s literally the entire movie so yeah it was lazy. They filled the movie with unnecessary flashbacks, which btw ruined the movie for me because of how fat and old Todd was. The villain was pretty crappy. Some scenes were really cliche. I didn’t see the amazing writing that Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul had. Literally the movie wasn’t necessary, cause nothing really happened.
I liked it. Whatever flaws it had were tolerable. It contributed to the universe and in my opinion was a necessary story to tell. Kind of makes the saga a pseudo-trilogy. Now they just need to leave this universe alone and it will be an immortal classic.

He just started to learn from past events. Took him a while but he's finally developing into more of a thinking man. Made sense to me. It's a difference, but not an unappreciable or arbitrary one. I found it kinda sweet.

I’m interested in your overall opinion of El Camino. I thought that there were beautiful moments that were definitely indicative of the Vince Gilligan that we all love (Eg. the “cops in the apartment” scene), but I felt that the narrative as a whole fell a bit flat. It felt sometimes like they were just trying to cross items off of a “stuff we think the viewers want to see” list rather than giving us a whole new story with new solutions to new problems.
I have to respectfully disagree. If the film had included Skyler, Gus, Marie, etc. - then, I think you would be right in saying that it felt like the writers were merely trying to cross items off a list. But, by focusing on the next 24-48 hours or so following Jesse's escape, I felt the film did an excellent job of restraint in the story.
Hey John! Funny enough, I thought the movie was entertaining, but I also thought it did fall a bit flat in some places. As a breaking bad fan, I just loved being back in the world with the characters, so I really enjoyed myself, but if I was someone who didnt have nostalgia to rely on, I dont think that would have been the case.

I don't really think it added anything. Breaking Bad ended with Jesse heading into the unknown, and El Camino was the same. Also, Jesse Plemons' weight gain took me right out of the story.

literally the only thing I slightly dislike about this movie is how the villain isn't showed until the third act. instead of coming into conflict over todd's money, (which still should/could be included along the way/be a focal point for jesse's eventual escape) neil comes into conflict with jesse because he/the other welders realize if he's caught he could rat them out, so they go looking to find him before the cops. given that he already has a confession video, its not an irrational fear for the welders to be worried about it. they see/hear the news that all the nazis have been killed but that jesse's on the run, they should be a bit worried given they're the last people alive jesse could rat on to police for a lighter sentence. same as walt/mike/jesse trying to destroy gus' laptop to cover their tracks, neil and the other welders could make a plan from the start to find/kill jesse for the same reason. it would add some runtime, which idk about anyone else but I absolutely wouldn't be opposed to from vince gilligan/peter ghould, it could develop neil from the start of the movie, give the plot more tension, and give jesse more conflict to overcome. the best part is that it could pretty much work with everything already in the movie too, not much being changed just added. sounds like a win-win-win-win scenario

I thought the sequel movie was unnecessary. It would be more powerful if Vince just left the ending to Jessie's story open ended on BB. Also I wish Vince does not expand the Bb universe anymore as it will make the original stale.
I disagree here. Bb was so well written that every story thread and detail was important. Vince didn't want it to end with such a big loose end.
There are arguments to be made on both sides. I do think the sequel was good. Necessary? Not really, but it was a good addition and I'm glad they made it.
Gilligan has played his hand at showing he's not quite the genius he's praised as. Better Call Saul is widely praised but break down the narrative and it pisses on its own feet. We know Mike and Saul will be fine because we've seen Breaking Bad. So the moments when they're meant to be in danger have no bite we know the outcome, the interesting teases of Saul in the present should be the show and Kim who is far more interesting than any other character would fair better in a show not connected to Breaking Bad.
@@TheB0sss Have you seen the video of Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul reading the draft of the last episode's script? When describing the scene of Jesse driving away, it says, "It's up to us to decide where he's going." So, at least at one point, it was deliberately written to be an open ending for Jesse.

I enjoy these kinds of writing breakdowns even though I've never seen the source material, though I do have to say I probably wouldn't have trusted Todd since my most recent thing I saw Jesse Plemons in was Black Mirror as an antagonist

Better Call Saul's still going, don't forget. It's mainly in the past, but it does have those occasional future scenes. I reckon that's where they'd show what happens to him (probably only by the time it's done).
I feel like Holes is another good movie that does flashbacks fairly well, but that might just be my 12 year old opinion.
This is a bit of an unpopular opinion, but it probably would've been better if El Camino had been a season of breaking bad rather than a movie. (I can elaborate more if needed)

I feel like the Walter and Jane flashbacks were a bit redundant and retreated ground that had already been covered. We hear his thoughts on his future in the Mike flashback, and see him trying to leave town throughout the movie. I think the Walter flashback does a good job of solidifying his thoughts on the future. I think the Jane one should've been cut. Totally agree with you on everything else.
Thanks for your input. I for one liked the premise, voiced by Jane, to take control of your path and not to hand over your gun like Jesse had at certain times.
@@EdwinBroekman I'm a bit mixed on it to be honest. On the one hand, the premise as you say does tie in thematically to help inform us on Jesse's state of mind (same with Walt flashback). On the other hand, I feel if this was cut then we would still have enough info about Jesse's thought process here. The same is true with the Walt flashback. I do think that cutting both of them could be cutting too much context but if you cut one of them you'd be fine. So I guess I'd say that the flashbacks to add something to the narrative but at the same time they could be removed and you wouldn't lose anything. It's a weird paradox.

For me, going along with the character emotions it was a time for calmness and I felt it was nice to be able to exist in simpler times again with him. I see your point but I'd still say leave both in.

I wish I liked this movie. I love BB and BCS. And while this movie is expertly crafted, I feel it added nothing to what we already knew. BB ended with him escaping, and in this he just continues to escape. All the Todd flashbacks just show us that Todd is a sociopath which we already knew. And we are left in a story about Jessie trying to find money to do what we already knew he did anyway. I failed to see the point. I would have been way more interested to see how a broken Jessie actually rebuilds his life in Alaska. Not killing the guy that made his harness and digging around for cash.

I loved this movie because it fleshed out Jesse's character's suffering at the hands of his captors and makes you wonder if he is ever going to be okay again. This was the perfect ending to breaking bad. Jesse's ending was the most disappointing thing in breaking bad. His internment at the hands of The Nazis was barely elaborated on and we don't feel the weight of his torture and what his emancipation actually holds. I hate ambiguous endings. You're never sure if Jesse is going to be alright and seeing him drive down that Alaskan highway was fucking cathartic as hell.
It was a little fanservicey... in fact it was a little fanservicey to embark on such a project in the first place... but when it's done well like here, that's not actually a bad thing. It wasn't overly like that - it wasn't like that in the way that made it seem like it didn't have a plot of its own, or made it seem like just a bunch of deleted scenes, or anything like that. Doesn't have to be a gigantic twist that brings new implications to the meaning of the series. Perfectly fine just being its own additional chapter.

And then a flashback where he does some crazy exercise routines to lose all of it.

My only problem with this film was the Neil thing. The "wild west duel" was downright cringe-worthy and really, I think they'd be better off introducing a new antagonist for Jesse, not someone rooted just in the past. The flashbacks made Neil feel really forced as a character, and just kind of unnecessary. A corrupt police captain or a bounty hunter would probably interest me more.

It started and ended in the same way, Jesse was free to do what he wanted

I think it mainly had to do with the fact that the film was filmed in such secrecy that there wasn’t an opportunity for him to lose some pounds that he had likely gained for another role.

Fat Todd was 95% responsible for taking me out of the flashbacks. It didn’t make any sense.

I really like El Camino but a lot of the flashbacks were unnecessary or fan service. I like being serviced as much as the next fan but they could've had something in there place

The only flashback that felt forced for me was unfortunately Walters cameo. Served no real purpose. At least everything else had something relevant to the present moment. Still a good scene though.

Yeah, that's fair, I wasn't so keen on the jane flashback and the Todd ones went on for longer than I would've liked.
Meris Fan service? How? Marie, Skyler and Walt Jr. weren’t in the film so that’s completely false.
El Camino was really a letdown compared to BB and BCS.
