Fun fact: one of Barton's student was Jean Joseph Renaud , a highly regarded fencer(foil & épée)writer/playwright/journalist.
His magnum opus is *Défense dans la Rue* _Defence in the Street_ where he explains a french counterpart to Bartitsu: the method is quasi similar except the cane guard is different(middle line) and he adds the knife & the revolver into the curriculum.
He also wrote a treaty on fencing (foil/épée/sabre) & various article available in french at Wiki AMHE on his page
I also have a physical copy of the DDLR book !

@Whammer79 I think I read somewhere that the Times newspaper in an article incorrectly referred to “Bartitsu” as “Baritsu” and this mispelling was presumably read and carried in error into the Sherlock Holmes book by the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

So many martial arts and variations and amalgamations of martial arts. In my time I have studied quite a few. Judo under many greats such as Jacques LeGrand, Karl Geis, Phil Porter, Anton Geesink, Sumiyuki Kotani Shihan who taught me Nage No Kata. Shotokan Karate under 5 time All Japan Champion Takayuki Mikami, Wado Ryu Karate under it's founder Hironori Otsuka, Tomiki Aikido under his student Karl Geis. Kuk Sool Won under it's founder, Grand Master Kuk Sa Nim (Suh, In Hyuck), as well as many others too numerous to name. Now in my 80s I am resigned to defending myself using what I call Hikigane Yubi Do, which I believe translates roughly to Trigger Finger Way. That's right. Now in my 80s I'm too old to take the chance of fighting off an aggressor when it's so much easier and more effective to rely on the handgun that I always carry. Here in Louisiana where I have a concealed handgun permit, it's not even needed because in Louisiana open carry is legal. Funny law - carry your gun where everybody can see you have it is legal but cover it up and you need a concealed handgun permit. Thanks, Chadi for introducing another interesting martial art to your fans.

Osu! Went on a training trip to Japan in '84, with Dan Ivan. It was an IMAF tour. We were instructed by various masters of Japanese martial arts. Some of the guys then, were in their 80's. A couple of the swordsmen, Batojustu, actually worked for the Imperial Family, as executioners. During that trip, we had Judo classes at the Embassy & I was lucky enough to go to Yamaguchi 'the cats' Dojo & also to Otska Sensei's. The Cat was in a wheelchair & his son was giving class.
Sounds like you have great memories too 👍🏼

This guys is way ahead of his time. Even now.
It's like MMA + Equinox gym.
It can all work. Fencing can work if you use an umbrellas or a cane. A cane with a curved handle, or an umbrella, can be a hooking weapon like a tonfa or a hook sword.
It can be a gold mine if someone can execute it. All of the elements are already there separately.
LA boxing + tae kwon do + kendo + judo + jujitsu + ballet + Equinox = New Bartitsu.

      For Savate(sources in french) :
*La Boxe (La Savate) Pratique, Offensive et Defensive, Conseils Pour Le Combat Dans La Rue* - Julien Leclerc (For the more combative savate)
*L'art de la boxe française et de la canne : nouveau traité pratique et théorique* - Joseph Charlemont (For the "academic" savate) ==> also include a part on the cane
For the Jujitsu , i haven't the original japonese version but the french ones(close enough to the bartitsu's) :
*Comment se défendre* - Georges Dubois
*Les secrets du Jiu-Jitsu* - Ernest Regnier
*Manuel de Jiu-Jitsu : Coups usuels à l'usage des sociétés de gymnastique, de l'armée et du public en général* & *Je me défends toute seule* - Armand Cherpillod
*Jiu Jitsu Pratique* - Charles Péchard
*Les Sports de Défense* - Emile Maitrot
*L’art de se défendre dans la rue avec ou sans armes* - Emile André
      Hope this helps !!!

Hey Chadi, I'm doing a presentation in a few months about a pamphlet that fencing master Alfred Hutton wrote during his time at the Bartitsu Club about Yukio Tani's Jiu-Jitsu, and how it compares to modern BJJ and medieval European wrestling. I'm 99% sure I've interpreted the techniques in the pamphlet correctly, but I'm trying to find video examples from the time period to confirm my interpretations and see if there's any nuances I'm missing. Could you provide the sources for the videos in your video, so that I can see if there's any more content I can draw from?

Now that I'm older, I agree more and more and look to arts like Silat and Jujitsu to work on in my looming old age as as I'm 55 now and am getting slower but more tactical in my approach ...

I could be totally wrong *(or Bruce was pretty familiar with the art himself)!!!!* Bruce Lee drew heavily from western (& eastern sources) sources between boxing and fencing when he created Jkd. And the moment the Tao of Jkd was release. He strip away the trapping components of Wing Chun (focus on the 4 corner parry from Wing Chun structure), and focus heavily on boxing & fencing instead. it doesn't seem like a unified system at all, it looks like he just named it as a publicity gimmick utilising the popularity of jujitsu.

The only person with less credential that started their own marshal art was Jigoro Kano! Three years in japan is more than enough time to master all jujitsu and judo moves. but how can you become Swiss wrestling in that time. As a Black belt in Bartitsu I know its as useless as Maui Thai. Just save yourself some time and learn how to throw a green Chi ball. ( Hint green Chi seems to be the most powerful)

Ok, for a history enthusiast this works well, but as an introductory video of bartitsu this just goes way too much into trivialities
