- How to build a #bushcraft stool using a scotch eyed #auger. This is my first build with this awesome little auger. It's a great bushcraft tool and super useful for a variety of off grid projects. Stay tuned for more videos using the 4th bushcraft tool (1 - knife 2 - axe 3 - saw 4 - auger).

What is the brand of auger you are using?
Black Raven Bushcraft
@@pikeoutside728 are you using a 1" or a 1 1/2" cutting diameter auger?
@@mindyburns7536 great question. It's been a while, but I want to say it is an inch.
Isn’t the eye end of the tool supposed to have the same diameter as the auger, so you use it to shave down the ends of the dowels (legs) to the correct diameter to fit the holes?
I have heard that. Haven't tested it out on this one.
He doesnt have it on his. If it has it, one side will be tapered to push aside the wood its peeling off. If you look at his, both sides are straight, no taper
Freaking awesome job not knowing what the tool does and then filming yourself fumbling around 😅
@@arsenalreign - Can't say as I have filmed myself using one. Sure, I have one, but no footage of it, sorry.
@julies1ify the taper was grinded onto one end of the eye of this tool so it can cut into the wood as you pound the other end. The traditionally didn't come with a bevel until some youtuber tried to patent it.
I bought a 1" Scott's Eyed Wood Auger to try this very craft out for myself. I snuck off by myself for my first trial and error sessions and had a blast with creating my first attempted Doweling after Wood Auguring my first project. Which was just making a secure intersecting fixture. I took off doing this until I realized the overall value in such a tool, so, I went and ordered me a 1/2" Scott's Eyed Wood Auger and went back to the woods yet again by myself, to attempt another "something", to confirm my suspicions that a Doweled Joint is stronger than a nailed joint. Yep. I was correct, so I then let my mind wander as to the possibilities.... Now there's dowel coat hangers on almost every door in my House, the garage, the shed... I'm thinking of manufacturing my own privacy panels for my 6' chain link fence out of woven branches in wood augured and dowel pinned frames...yes the possibilities are indeed endless. Enjoy !
Lol! That's amazing 👏 great work!
This is the best tool I got
Very nice 🤠
The eye of the handle end is supposed to also cut the pegs to fit into the holes the auger drills.
Hi! An optimal number of legs is three. Then any object supported in three points does not rock or fall over. Great video. I have just made my own drill and going to test it. Stay safe!
Great review Darien! Your detailed explanation and demonstration of using the scotch eye auger is very helpful for other outdoor enthusiasts looking to use this tool. We are happy to inform you that your review has been featured on the Hand Auger page on Waivio, and it will serve as a valuable resource for others considering this product. Keep up the great work and happy crafting!
Isn't that what the scotch eye is for not just for a handle you take the scotch eye part and you bang it into the part that you want to go into the hole and it'll be the same exact size as that blade. You should not have to use your knife to make it fit perfectly into the hole, just use the scotch eye part for that. I think I would need a bigger seat or else my big butt would probably break that thing LOL. Thanks for the video!
This guy gets it
Good little video. I would have gone all the way through the log, split the leg part way, cut a few wedges, tightened it all up, and then cut it down and shaved it flat.. but hey, that's just me, and yours is fine.😊
Appreciate the comment. Cheers to you and yours!
That is a nifty tool!
Right? Off grid drilling wonder!
Sweetheart the eye of your auger should be the same size as the bit!!! And it should also be tapered to be able to hammer it down over the end of the stick to create a peg. Of course removing the excess fraid wood from around it sugar!!!! Also Don't punch through so it won't break through when you sit on it babe!!!
So you won't have to whittle just use the eye for cutting the peg end sweetheart!!!!
How is it a "Scotch Eye" unless it has a sharpened eye to make the Mortise and Tenon? You have an auger if you have to carve the tenon with a knife...
Thank you for the video. Turned out great. Stay safe and enjoy the woods.
I have been wanting that Agawa folding saw and a scotch eyed auger for a while now. We'll see what Santa brings. Thanks for the demo.
The Agawa was a birthday present this year. Great saw! Very different from my folder. I really like it for bigger pieces of wood
@@pikeoutside728 I have a cheap harbor freight bow saw for bigger stuff. The Agawa would be the perfect replacement.
These are always fun project
So I think that you use the eye on the auger to pound the ends of the sticks to make perfect size pegs to fit in the hole
Nice work!
The whole point of the tool is that the scotch eye makes a perfect peg size for the holes you’ve drilled. You only used half of the tool…those legs will come out very easily
You kind of missed the whole beauty of the scotch eye. The cylinder end is made to carve down the wood pieces to match the size of the hole you made with the auger.
That is a specific variant of scotch eyed augers. It's just for a removable wooden handle on the original design.
This one doesnt appear to have the sharpend end
Cool video buddy. Thanks
Cant wait to make a million stools once I get my own scotch eye
😆🙂
Thanks for the good video.
Very interesting video. New friend here.
that is a blackraven right? I JUST ordered the 2 inch albatross. But I think I will get the lower diameter ones also. Good choice on the brand, they are built to last it looks like.
You got it!
Nice video man.
Nice job! Btw don't stab your drill bit into wood like a dart if you damage the screw tip it becomes useless next time try 3 legs instead of 4 easier to balance out on uneven ground.
Ive used minr for work bench project, camping ladder so far
Yeah, the possibilities are endless! Great tool, right?
Is that a Condor Bushlore you are using for a knife ? How is it holding up ?
It's still going strong and it's at least 3 years old now. It doesn't get as much use as it deserves, but I've batoned with it a good amount and it's held up!
@@pikeoutside728 Thank you.....I just got one and I haven't taken it out yet but I love the feel of it!!
3 legged stool would be more steady.
I died laughing at the final stool
What is the knife that you are using please?
Hey Richard, it's a Condor Bushlore. Thanks!
@@pikeoutside728 Thank Pike. Liked and subcribed.
What size is best for scotch eyed auger
Great question! I liked the 3/4 inch, but I see other people with 1 or 1/2 inch options. It probably doesn't matter a lot, but if you are going to do a lot of work with them, a set of different sizes might be helpful.
need more volume
Hi ! When you purchase the auger drill; does it come with the protection case?
It only comes with a cardboard tube. I ended up making a leather case that has done a good job protecting the auger and my pack. Check out my Instagram feed if you would like to see how that looks.
The one I bought off of Amazon was cheaper because it didn't have a leather case but it did have a little bag with a drawstring which is perfectly fine with me as long as it's protected and keeps it protected from me because it is extremely sharp.
You completely missed the point of the tool you (mis)used.
