Seeing the backfire burns on the hood, I am guessing it was a 389 Tri-power car from the factory. No 400 cu until 1967 and Pontiac didn’t have the 455 until 1970.
I wish yall would get back to completely rebuilding classics like this instead of just flipping them. Would be awesome to see a beauty like this GTO back to pristine condition with the Gas Monkey signature on it.

The sound of that 454 big block brings back memories of my dads 67 Chevelle SS with a 427. There's nothing like a rumble of a Chevy big block. That's going to be a slick ride for somebody! I would put in a Pontiac 400 and put the 4 speed back in it and go for broke, lol!

ive only recently found the Gas monkeys on you tube and have been binge watching a few of the episodes (many the mini vehicles). i enjoy the fact there are no comercials and that dam voice over is also gone. thank you :) Love the GTO but the shining moment in this video had to be Phipps ring tone, the Benny Hill tv show theme AKA Yakety Sax. good stuff

Have you ever seen a car half restored? I mean a line straight down the centre with one side looking like new and the other side exactly as you find it. I challenge you to build one Richard how cool would it be. I have never ever seen it done and thats a good reason to do it.
Your oil drip is notorious on big block Chevys that have been sitting for a while. The two-piece rear main seal hardens from sitting. Run it for a while and it should cease leaking. You probably blew out the power valve on your double pump carburetor. If it backfires, they are notorious for doing this. I'd go through and rebuild the whole thing. They're pretty simple.
The more I drive and own new cars makes me want an old car once again.. You wouldn’t fire up any new car like this. Fault codes, bad computers and sensors.. Man I miss the old days.. 👏🏼😂🍻

Richard is full of shit or just made an honest mistake. All GTOs in 1966 had a 398. Just listen to Ronnie and the Daytonas “Little GTO”.
You might be full of it too, Olds 455 released in 1968.... Google it.
It’s not an Olds. Buick released their 455 before Pontiac as well. If you are so good at Googling you would know.

Pontiac introduced the 455 in 1970 (Bonneville, GTO, Grand Prix). The Firebird/TA didn’t have the 455 option until 1971.
