E30 Rough Idle Troubleshooting

- The journey of the E30 never gets old. The longer I own this car and mess with it, the more I learn about it (Good and bad). One bad thing is the amount of oil this car leaks. It has never left a puddle larger than a quarter but I'm confident that this car is leaking from every gasket...
Also what is the cylinder 6 jumper wire supposed to do? Why doesn't it make a difference weather plugged in or unplugged...
Watch to find out lol
The plastic plug on the AFM where the idle screw is missing. This is set from factory and should not be adjusted. Luckily the factory depth is stamped right next to the hole and you can set it back to factory by measuring with a digital caliper. You'll also want to do a smoke test to find and solve for vacuum leaks.
I didn't realize it was missing the screw lol and I did the smoke test a video or two after this one. My leak was the valve cover. it was a huge leak. And I replaced the AFM with a used one and that fixed it.... Luckily I got a used AFM for $5 lol
I don't race mine either but for the age of the car, 20/50 is the way to go. I run it all year round. When starting I leti t run for a few minutes before driving. Other thing to conside too is using an oil with a zinc additive. There's a good amount of evidene that the additive helps. Castrol has 20/50 with zinc and I've seen it at Walmart
Great advice! I appreciate it. I have struggled to find 20/50 oil local. I’ll check Walmart for sure
Perfect opportunity to catch up on the homies video. E30 content!
My man! I really appreciate it! This car is a lot of fun but needs some love lol
Outstanding.
Thank you!
Also at 11:11, I THINK that's a crank position sensor? Some cars have two, some have one. Try to get a Bentley manual for the car. It'll have more info. Also make sure the intake boot isn't torn. That can definitley contribute to poor idle. and clean the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) at the top of the intake boot.
In my next video you’ll see ive done a smoke test, new ICV and a bunch of other stuff but I think I’ve solved it. Fingers crossed!
The original spec for the car was non synthetic 15w40, which is what we put in at the dealer until they started switching over to synthetic oil around model year 98-99 depending on engine.
so what would you recommend for my car?
@@zackellis23 15w40 (which is probably most commonly Rotella diesel oil) would be fine, or any other euro rated 5w40/5w30/0w40 should be fine. When they made the change to full syn 5w30 (LL-01 spec oil), it was supposed to be backwards compatible with the cars that called for 15w40. Back then, I don’t think oil specs were as important as they are on a modern car. As long as it’s full, and it’s changed often enough, it probably doesn’t make a huge difference for just normal street use.
@@AutoXerWgn610 haha if theres anyone I trust its you! with 300K+ miles I don't think I can go wrong either way though lol
What was that you wrote on the oil filter? The installation date?
That’s correct. I put the dates because I have multiple cars and they don’t all get driven enough so if I don’t exceed a mileage, I’ll go by date. Or like my SRT4 I’ll change the oil after each race event. Also the E30 odometer stopped working so the date helps haha
