    TRANSCRIPT
    Hi. I'm Rebecca from engVid. In this lesson, you'll have a chance to review eight common English errors. So, let's see how you do.
    The first one: "Today morning I woke up late." So, what's wrong with that? There is actually something wrong with each and every one of these. I'll tell you that in advance; there's no... There are no tricks here. Okay? So, what's wrong with that sentence? "Today morning I woke up late." Well, it should be: "This morning". Okay? We don't say: "Today morning". We say: "This morning".
    Number two: "What's the different?" What's the different? Well, that's wrong too, because "different" is an adjective. What you want to use here is the noun. So, what's the noun of this word? "Difference". "What's the difference?" Okay? This is a really common error, so make sure you don't make this one.
    Next one: "I met John two years before." Okay? What's wrong with that? Well, over here, we can't say: "I met John two years before." We can say: "I met two... I met John two years ago." All right? If you use the word "before", then you have to say before something. "Before I graduated". Okay? "Before I got married", or whatever. But you can't use "before" by itself. So the proper word there is "ago". "I met John two years ago."
    Next one: "This is a six-months course." That sounds almost okay, but it's not okay. So the mistake here is with the "s". When we use this expression, it becomes... The entire expression becomes an adjective for the noun "course". So we should say: "This is a six-month course.", "This is a million dollar contract." And so on. Okay? That's another... Each of these is a different element of grammar, different aspect of grammar, and so on.
    Next, number five: "Thank you. I really enjoyed." What's wrong with that? Well, the problem is here. "Enjoyed" is a reflexive verb, so you would need to say: "I really enjoyed myself.", "I really enjoyed myself.", "He enjoyed himself.", "She enjoyed herself.", "We enjoyed ourselves.", "They enjoyed themselves." Okay? So there are certain reflexive verbs in English, and we need to use them correctly. That's one of them. Very common one.
    Okay, number six: "Did you loose your cellphone?" What's wrong with that? I helped you a little bit by actually showing you where the error is. So, many people make this error. This is actually a spelling mistake. You should be spelling the word this way. "Did you lose your cellphone?" "Loose" is an adjective which means not tight, and "lose" is the opposite of "find". Okay? "Did you lose your cellphone?" Also, the pronunciation is "lose" and not "loose".
    Next one: "This is an academic course.", "This is an academic course." So, what was wrong with what I said there? Okay? So, what was wrong was my pronunciation of that. So many people mispronounce this word. It is not "academic". It is "academic". The stress is on the middle. Academic. "This is an academic course.", "This is an academic program." Okay? So, if... In case you make that mistake. I'm not saying you do. In case you do, make sure you correct it.
    Last one: "Yes, I have a free time." Is that...? What's wrong there? What's going on? Okay, here. We don't need to say: "A free time". We need to say: "Free time", because this is a... Time is an uncountable noun.
    Now, each one of these examples represents a different aspect of grammar. So, how can you possibly learn all of them? Well, I'll give you two easy ways to help you out. One is to go to our website: www.engvid.com, because there, we have currently I think more than 700 lessons on different aspects of English grammar and of English in general for exams, for writing, speaking, all kinds of things. And by watching them, you can find the lessons that you actually need. And the other thing is that we also have... I've written actually a resource which might help you, which shows 50 such common errors that people make in English, and that might help you out as well. Okay?
    So, I hope you did well, and I hope you continue to do better and better in English. All the best with your English. Bye for now.

    thank you MS. Rebecca, I learn something new from you. it's so convenient to have RUclips channel. I'm 45++ years old still can't manage proper English, all the while I'm self learning without any tutorial.
    my first self learning from zero seen I was 13 years old, using news paper asking around people for help and started reading stories books with my daughter went she was a baby. learning from time to time but still has grammar error😅

  • @clarkkirkendall3865
    @clarkkirkendall3865 6 лет назад +7

    Once I started to learn Spanish, I started to realize that language follows general rules and mechanics. Now I think differently to myself in my native language, English. I think in compartmentalized steps that add up to make speech. The steps are basically parts in grammar like nouns, verbs, reflexive verbs (esconderme= hide MYSELF), past participles (the -ed ending on words; vivido=lived) infinitives (comer=to eat/eating) personal pronouns (la mujer= the [female] lady), tenses such as the indicative ( yo como= I eat) preterite (comiste= you ATE), imperfect (yo comía= I was eating / I ate [over a period of time continuously]) conditional (yo comería [si]= I WOULD eat [if], Progressive (the -ing ending in English; corriendo= running), future (comere= I will eat) and the most infusing of all tenses being the subjunctive (Espero que VAYAS conmigo [instead of ‘espero que conmigo’]=I wish that you go with me). It’s The most difficult tense because we rarely differentiate between in English. The difference here in English is the same as the word “go” having the tense “goes” if I’m not mistaken. My suggestion is to at least try to learn another language as you will understand your own language in more clear steps, which will improve your skills in explaining things in different complex ways.

    1. Today I woke up late.
    2. (same) 3. I met John 2 years before this (kinda sounds alright but earlier makes the most sense)
    4. This is a six-month course
    5 thank you I really enjoyed it. (but the end depends on the context)
    6. Did you lose your phone?
    7. This is an academic course.
    8. Yes I am free. (as the example sounds too non-native)

    Nice. You are precise but also courteous and friendly. However, "enjoy" is not usually a reflexive verb, it's a transitive verb. I could say I enjoyed the meal, the movie, the concert, etc.
    Come to think of it, for a new speaker "I enjoyed myself" must seem like a rather strange thing to say.

      @janlambert5128 3 года назад +1

      Time can be either an uncountable noun or a countable noun. When we talk about free time, how much time we have, how long something takes, we are using the uncountable noun. In your statement, ‘Now is a good time’, time takes on the meaning of moment or occasion, and has become a countable noun e.g. ‘Now is a good moment’ or ‘I have been there five times’. Hope this helps 😉

    "Grammatical mistakes" is the correct usage. Similarly never say or write "you are wrong" "You are in the wrong" is the correct usage.

    • @yusofahmad50
      @yusofahmad50 3 года назад

      Both are correct except that "you are wrong" sounds more bold whereas "you are in the wrong" sounds more subtle.

      Those are called phrasal verbs. There are no rules for these, you have to just learn all of their meanings. That’s why only native speakers tend to use them all correctly.

    Imho, most common mistakes are done in:
    1. Articles
    2. Past vs perfect.
    3. In/on/at
    4. Prefixes like un-, im-, dis-, etc.
    5. Proper pronunciation, especially stresses and letters like u, i, y.

    I really doubt whether enjoyed is reflexive verb. If I'm not wrong, I guess we can use it in different ways. Instance, I really enjoyed with you guys, which is obviously not a reflexive usage but if we use it as reflexive, I really enjoyed myself, he really enjoyed himself, herself so on. I think we can use either way depends on situation 😉

  • @jjhahag

    As an English speaker, I had gotten to number 7 and I was sweating because I couldn't figure out what was wrong lol Also, for the last example, I always thought of "free time" as plural. So even though I wouldn't use "a free time" I often use "some free time" since "some" is an indefinite pronoun.

    • @paulhaynes8045
      @paulhaynes8045 Год назад

      As a UK English speaker, it's very odd to read someone say they are an 'English' speaker and then use 'gotten' (to us, a VERY American word). I think we're reaching the point with the growing difference between your language and mine where it would help learners if we call one 'English' and the other 'American'!

    • @caramilalamrani9355
