I miss DTM from 1990-1997 ... where cars were made in fabrics, welded, with interior, then stripped of everything, tuned, and ready to go. It was exciting to see how street legal cars were tuned and racing over the ring. Adam bough Mercedes, Paul had BMW both were watching tv how their own cars were racing. This day DTM cars are made by molds. Mercedes C63 AMG has nothing to do with Mercedes C63 AMG DTM its sad...
1990's were awesome, but nothing close to 'street' specs and still big-money campaigns. Nostalgia just likes to paint things a little differently for us 😎 - Taz.
What a great look at the inner workings of a DTM racer! It's quite a driver oriented series when you consider the lack of driver aids coupled with the high levels of aero downforce at play. I had no idea they were running a spec transaxle and wiring harness. Funny to hear these are "cost cutting" measures in vehicles comprised of full carbon tubs and exotic bellcrank suspension setups.
With DTM and Super GT moving away from V8's they've probably missed the boat there too, but it is nice to have a few different series around so long as they're running healthily and engaging - Taz.
Agreed. Now that they're 600ish hp 2.0L turbo I'm sure with a bit of tweaking an interested party could homologate one of the modern DTM engines under the new regs
It would've been a great spec but we have to remember that DTM and Super GT have the backing of huge manufacturers with a massive budget , V8 supercars team don't and as we speak even the current V8s formula is too expensive for the teams now imagine if we had DTM spec cars. Maybe some day when there's over 100 million people here and the country is hugely developed we'll be able to challenge these manufacturers but for now we're far away from it.
There's a word I should have used! haha Yes they are certainly an interesting piece of kit and the series has produced some real talent over the years - Taz.
I do wonder about ABS. It basically lurches you forward before you even lock a wheel, so it leaves traction margins on the table that a good driver can use. If the inside wheel locks a bit here and there, big deal.
It can be, as the resulting flat spots reduce both cornering and straight line braking - that is why cars in a race series where ABS is banned will usually have a 'lock up' warning light - Aussie Supercars, for example. I would agree, though, that in principle it is better to hold it at the point where there is slight slippage and maximum braking, than having it cycling on-off-on-off- Many years ago, BMW (IIRC) had a unique mechanical proportioning setup which limited braking to the inner calipers by the use of a pendulum operating the valves - I believe it was a way of mechanically getting more brake force to the more heavily loaded tyre as electronic assistance was banned.
High Performance Academy I think it makes sense. While i still prefer the old insane engines, it makes much more sense for the manufacturers to develop relevant technology in their racecars, therefore the turbo engines are the way to go. And also they are much quicker, so it doesn‘t get boring in any way either :)
I loved the "old DTM" now it is simply spec car Kabuki racing. The cars are still marvels of engineering and fabrication. However, every time he says, This is to make sure there is no advantage to be gained. sucks the soul out of racing. This is why the golden age of whatever form of racing is, it is before the Nannies show up and bring their bags of fairness.
Glad you enjoyed it, cheers for watching. We have another [TECH TOUR] coming out in a few weeks on the legendary Mercedes-Benz 190E EVO II DTM which should give an interesting comparison to how things changed over the years - Taz.
I love motorsport from cars, bikes and trucks and have done for 40 years. I have to say aerodynamics on modern race cars has ruined racing from a spectator point of view. Cars should look like the car you can buy, No aero , a clutch and gear stick. Best driver wins ..... not best car wins.
There are still racing series with no aero and manual gearboxes. Make sure you support them so that they keep going if this is your preference ;) - Taz.
parading around like they have anything to do with the production car is just misleading. GT and Time Attack is way more authentic. Trans Am is the same stupid crap.
High Performance Academy their are more classes of time attack than the über premium classes you cover. Even so they all started life with a VIN # and had to be built up to what they are today. Stop acting so out of touch. GT4 Class of racing, for example, is very related to the street cars.
operamatt GT4s are pretty much production based street cars. But generally when someone talks about GT, they probably meant GT3/GTLM/GTE. I’m not exactly sure they’re production based. The 911 RSR (GTE class) for example, is mid-engined now, which has no road-going equivalent.
GT Specialist I agree. I was more talking about Time attack and GT4 Classes. DTM, Trans AM & NASCAR all have this issue. Styled to look like something they are not.... very deceptive.
Who here came straight from there notifications or email? Is that even a thing now? Let us know 😎- Taz.
I do💯

I really hope you guys can (one day 🙏🙏) be able to do a TECH TOUR on a Super GT car.

Yes the 'cost cutting' is all relative eh! Hate to imagine what the budget would need to be without such measures 😅- Taz.
Wow, thank you. There was so much information, my drunk ass couldn't keep up
I'm here just for that cold air intake 🤭
Finally well deserved 100k subs! Congratulations guys! :)
Woo! Cheers mate 🎉
This is the spec that I wished V8 Supercars went to when they introducted the 'car of the future' which would have allowed other brands to join them.
With DTM and Super GT moving away from V8's they've probably missed the boat there too, but it is nice to have a few different series around so long as they're running healthily and engaging - Taz.

@@hpa101 As part of the 2.0 reg released in 2017 they allowed for 2 doors, turbo 4 and 6 cylinder engines but everyone has stuck with a V8s.

@@fabsalomon85 don't bother with the cars. Just the engines. All the dev work is done. Just adjust the boost to parity
I love this channel so much. Thanks fellas.
Thanks for the support and comment mate, the team here appreciates it - Taz.
Those are some really valuable details for me :-) Thanks!
Another great video. Interesting to learn the chassis are shared with the JGTC cars.
Can you do a JGTC/Super GT version of these vids whenever you have the chance please.
Edit: spelling.
DTM...Doing the most?
Lol thanks for bringing us another great one!
Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft 😉
HPA did a 3-hour video on the Benz Patent Motorwagen and still found time to spend 2 hours talking about the ECU.
Thanks! Loved one day to see a more in depth feature on these beasts!
Wow never knew about the whole spec chassis business, great vid 👍
I love the channel, but would like to see more detail on the cars construction.
I love your videos, I wish your images of the cars were like 3 times longer.
Very cool! More video of the actual car over the presenter though, please😉
What a car.... another brilliant video 👍
What a raw but clever car!
There's a word I should have used! haha Yes they are certainly an interesting piece of kit and the series has produced some real talent over the years - Taz.
Did you say pair of 28 mm restrictors? Like only two 28 mill throttle blades? Two American quarters basically ?
I do wonder about ABS. It basically lurches you forward before you even lock a wheel, so it leaves traction margins on the table that a good driver can use. If the inside wheel locks a bit here and there, big deal.

The last season was also the last season of these 4.0 na V8 cars. These were the loudest racing cars in europe at the time.
What do you think of the new configuration? - Taz.
High Performance Academy
I think it makes sense.

tipping one of these in at 200kph+ with no driver assists must be terrifying.
2021 DTM was dead to me.
Great video thank you

Is that a 190e dtm in the background there?
Yes sir, there is a video coming on that too in a few weeks =) - Taz.
Love DTM! 😍
The last race this season is going to be epic eh! Only a few more days to wait - Taz.
High Performance Academy I can’t wait for the DTM/Super GT race in October!
look at what DTM/ITC had 20 years ago, www.speedhunters.com/2013/08/carbon-not-dated-the-secret-zakspeed-calibra/
Certainly a lot of potential there =) - Taz.
since it never was and probably never will be driven in anger we'll never know, but it certainly looks the part
BTW, another Binky video posted yesterday morning, and also the last of Retropower's Gordon Murray Escort videos.
This was not the 2018 car.
Now they have 610HP with v4 turbo
Yes it will be interesting to see where they head next too along with the Supercars series in Australia - Taz.
I love motorsport from cars, bikes and trucks and have done for 40 years. I have to say aerodynamics on modern race cars has ruined racing from a spectator point of view. Cars should look like the car you can buy, No aero , a clutch and gear stick. Best driver wins ..... not best car wins.

2 x 28mm restrictors?? really?? thats tiny!?! I'm surprised it runs..
@Mandje Tichelaar i mean 28mm 2.8cm is a tiny inlet hole its like a 1 inch 😲
DTM = Euro NASCAR
Steering wheel = Pad for Sony PlayStation X
Wut?
Except NASCAR were all completely same cars with different fascia stickers between Toyota, Ford and Chevy
parading around like they have anything to do with the production car is just misleading. GT and Time Attack is way more authentic. Trans Am is the same stupid crap.
operamatt T/As are still a thing today? I thought that was for the 70s with mostly American muscle / pony cars 😅
I'm struggling to link Time Attack or GT to production cars either to be fair 🤪 - Taz.
High Performance Academy their are more classes of time attack than the über premium classes you cover. Even so they all started life with a VIN # and had to be built up to what they are today. Stop acting so out of touch. GT4 Class of racing, for example, is very related to the street cars.
