I am astonished to witness Chris not left foot braking in that glorious piece of machinery. The 4.0lt V8 setup was my fave DTM era. Only 1.5sec off Bruno after 11 laps in total spent in the car is impressive.
@@iliovecaRS it is not if you are driving this for the first time, chris usually races in GT3 but those are a fair bit slower than DTM. if a normal person was given to drive this car the gap would probably be closer to 15 seconds than 1.5

Honestly though, as a 2 wheel fan, street/sport/race bikes and race cars like these are just on totally different levels, you really can't even compare them properly. I'm a huge fan of 2 wheels and would bet most any street bike against most any street car on a track (within reason, a CBR250 isn't likely to take a C7 Corvette) But I wouldn't even put a fully built and modded HP4, RC8R, H2R, or CBR1000RR race bike against this car. Bikes got lean, but there's something to be said for aero and contact patch on a car.
The numbers of racing fascinate even the dullest tool once you dig into them. 1.5 seconds off the pace, assuming 10 sections of the track that are equal length, comes to 0.15s off the pace per corner/straight. That's roughly 1/2 of an eyeblink per section. lol
Jamie Wilkins Not saying I can do better. Like I said, 1/2 of an eyeblink per around 1600ft of track @ a 3 mile track. Not bad at all. Awesome vid. Can you imagine if factory racing cars were still around? Having to build a certain number of street cars, not much different from what went out on the track (save a few safety equipment). Now companies build cars for consumer track days, with a little competition, but they are not pushed like if there was actual racing
***** It's fun because we can still get it when reversing in normal cars. Reverse gears tend to be straighter than forward syncro ones. But they're not built like this thing. Reverse on a normal car only engages from a standstill, but in these cars you just hear it gear after gear. I can only imagine how drivers in the 30's drove cars with manual straight gears.. Had to double-clutch every time, and learn to do it fast enough to be quick around a circuit. Awesome..
***** I was just about to reply that same thing. ***** The engine is actually naturally aspirated. Here's more info on the car if you want to see: www.dtm.com/en/Fahrzeug/BMW-M3-DTM.html
The problem with touring car racing is its distancing itself from the cars they drive. I.e. they get a german car then replace 90% of it. DTM and touring cars in general should have regulations that say they must retain certain parts or a percentage of the original car. So no chassis modification. Engine must retain certain engine parts like block and heads. The car that's being raced should be very close to the car you can go and buy. Take those regulations and mix it with no driver aids like abs and traction control and if car manufactures want to make cars that will win DTM then they would be forced to make awesome chassis's instead of just tubs that have traction control do all the work. The reason the E30 M3 is the best M3 was because the chassis was engineered to perfection. Now instead of investing in engineering the chassis they just engineer it to a tolerable point then just have traction control compensate for the inadequacies of the chassis.
abbed Idriss I think basically there are two kinds of touring car fans. The first type are those who want to see cars that they can afford. For eg. single-make series are the series for the first type of fans. Then there are fans who don't care about relevance with the road car and want massive wings, loud sounds and GP3 matching performance.
+RedPetrol76 I honestly think any person who is just impressed by the engineering to the detriment of the racing isn't a racing fan at all, he's just a car fan. If you cared about racing you'd appreciate the magic of taking production cars and seeing them tuned for racing within some homologated regulation band and then enjoy the fact that the companies producing the cars have incentive to make a street production care capable of being tuned like that. Even outside of the scope of the production angle and just within the racing team's realm its a fantastic premise. I'm personally not that chuffed by this kind of high downforce change because it just makes the racing so anemic. Its one thing if it was always like this, like with say F1, but its quite another for them to have taken a fantastically competitive non spec series and turned it into just another downforce bore. I couldn't care less if I can't drive something that derives its lineage from a DTM chassis. I only care that I get to watch good racing and I think that DTM has lost that which it was so excellent at. I'm a racing fan first and foremost. I don't care what it is or what it looks like if it races well. I don't think DTM races well anymore, at least not how it used to and that I think is a damned shame.
+abbed Idriss Yeah you so right - a touring car championship should be based on real (specified) versions of the serial cars like back the time. The actual DTM cars are prototypes. A BMW has nothing to do with the 3 series, the Mercs nothing with the c-class - the imitated look is fake, the car has nothing to do with the serieal ones. The cars of course are great, but I dont want prototype cars in a touring car champ. And the DTM is dominated in business by the manufacturers - no indipendend organisation like the FIA or similar in between - and this destroid imo the series. Im german, but I don't watch the series since now 10 years cause of that reason(s). The series is manufactureres controlled bullshit ... ... but hot cars they are ... sure!
So basically the performance vehicle equivalent to NASCAR at its deepest roots? That'd be awesome to see, but I don't think we'll return to that any time soon.
>they get a german car then replace 90% of it This doesn't count for DTM cars, just have a look at the monocoque: www.fourtitude.com/news/uploads/Motorsport_News/001__scaled_600-1_002.jpg GT3 cars like the Audi R8 LMS, Porsche GT3 R and so on are taken out from series production at an early point and being modified apart from the engine. So they still remain let's say 50 % the same as their street car brothers.
That harmonic sound you're referring to is the straight-cut gears. BTW, Chris...1.5 seconds off a top flight DTM driver's time is great for someone who just stepped into the DTM car the same day. Massive respect.

Once again, great vid Chris... The only part I have a tough time with (nothing to do with you) is why these series don’t allow boosted brakes due to the fact that it has to be quite difficult to control lockup when you have to put so much force into the pedal just to get the carbon brakes to do their thing...guess I just need to land myself a ride in a fast rig to know what it is I’m talking about.
Chris Harris gives reasonable, honest and passionate reviews of cars. Also the Americans that share his channel (ye ye) arnt't too annoying either. Subscribed.
i see alot of comments about the 1.5 seconds off thing. Chris is very fast. that is known, and i bet if you gave him 2 months of practice with that car i dont doubt he could get those 1.5 seconds and match bruno. what sets bruno apart is his racecraft. thats what makes him a world champion instead of a BMW factory test driver. hell i bet there are factory test drivers at Porsche or BMW that could beat his time in a Hotlap but in a full grid of cars, that man is a great white shark. he is still otherworldly fast at hot-lapping though dont get me wrong, his qualifying times are proof of that, just something to think about when seeing hes only 1.5 seconds off. i hope no one discredits Bruno and thinks Chris could really perform at his level with a full grid. as the skill gap is huge there and bruno really deserves that respect as hes a wicked fast racing driver. chris is great at racing too but bruno really is THAT good if you watch him.
It's amazing to me that some did not like this video. How often do you get driving impressions of a car of this magnitude? For what it's worth, i could give a crap about DTM because the magic of the series was lost ages ago. I can appreciate it's performance though. You simply don't say no to an offer like this. It takes some drivers many seasons to recalibrate their brains to drive these things. We see it in F1 every year, and some very fine drivers just never come to grips with the car. For Chris to get within 1.5 seconds of the team driver is very impressive.
Chris is so spot-on in this video. These cars are amazing but the racing DTM produces is very boring. V8 Supercars are just on another level at the moment and to be honest, I'd love to see him drive one of those beasts. They are heavier but with around 600 hp and a lot of mechanical grip they should be great fun!
Really? you think so? I was at the Nurburgring round this year and my God.. the noise.. It was like having a giant Wasp angrily fuck you in the ear canal every time the field drove past. But not only that watching the field jostle for position on the racing line and the variable weather on race day made things quite unpredictable and interesting.
Icemeister Not only I think so, I'm sure. Watch V8 Supercars and you'll see what I'm talking about. I have tried both and gave up on DTM about 3/4 in the season. It just wasn't interesting enough.
Yeah we'll iv'e been to V8 Supercar rounds in New Zealand (where i'm from) and seen them televised too (albeit about 12-13 years ago) and they also have the 'train' effect as there is after all only one perfect racing line.. on top of that, the cars are nowhere near as cool as the DTM ones with their mental Aero packages.
Icemeister F1 is the main motorsport series I follow. So if I want mental aero in cars I'm covered. When it comes to touring cars I don't like that. I prefer the V8s' more back-to-basics approach. Powerful engine, a normal wing and splitter and that's it. It produces great racing. I've been following the sport since 2009 and there have been very few races that I would call boring. This year's Bathurst for example was simply amazing. Such close battles after 6+ hours of racing. I tried DTM in 2012 for the first time and I found most races very boring. That's why I didn't even finish the season. In my opinion V8S is the most spectacular touring car series out there. It even beats F1 in many occasions.
Icemeister V8 Supercars 10-13 years ago is not the same as V8s now. They have a brand new chassis for a start and you haven't been watching the action this year you are really missing out. No freight trains of nothing just action and passing a plenty!
***** Well, these DTM cars aren't "based" on the roadgoing cars at all. This isn't GT3. Sure, the bodywork is designed to resemble the cars from BMW, Audi, Mercedes, etc. but that's about where the similarities end. The chassis for all companies bespoke and are built to a close spec, the suspension, tires, brakes, etc. are all purpose built for the series and shared among the companies. They each develop their own engines, but they are ALL 4.0 L V8's used just in this series. A modern DTM car is basically a purpose built race car with some superficially close road car bodywork.
I am astonished to witness Chris not left foot braking in that glorious piece of machinery. The 4.0lt V8 setup was my fave DTM era. Only 1.5sec off Bruno after 11 laps in total spent in the car is impressive.

Very cool, this video reminded why I love auto racing.
Wonderful video. Great Chris, as always
Your video collection at home must be awesome, being invited to drive all these cars/race cars. F1 was my favourite
Team manager: Funny the weatherman gave us a dry weather report but the track is wet.
Me:Looking at the car and drooling...🤤🤤🤤
04:25 - I could listen to that soundtrack all day. I mean, its not Celine Dion but it'll suffice.
around 2006 I briefly saw two e92 M3 GT3s in a warehouse at Astor Place. Still have no idea what that was about, but it was awesome
i love that circuit, i have been there two times driving a formula 3 and it is just amazing
Why do you tell us that shit?
+Jack Let's Plays und videos nice comment man, whith people like you the world will be a better place to be
Lucky guy, thought old track was better then the new one tho
Chris Harris is the man He can drive anything!!!
the on board soundtrack is beautiful
ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT AND PERFECTION. WELL DONE BMW 👍😎🖐🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
I want to see more racing cars with you in them Harris!
The end bit made me laugh, awesome video as always Chris.
Stunning video. And Chris' performance was actually really good considering he only had 8 laps and not the fitness of a DTM driver.
You lucky lucky man. Oh the things I'd do to drive one of those glorious machines
So I'm guessing DTM is essentially the closest a full bodied car can get to f1?
Depends on how you're defining "full bodied." An LMP1 car is closer to F1 than anything you see in a touring car or GT series.
opmike343 Full bodied meaning based off a road going car I guess :P
***** Well, these DTM cars aren't "based" on the roadgoing cars at all. This isn't GT3. Sure, the bodywork is designed to resemble the cars from BMW, Audi, Mercedes, etc. but that's about where the similarities end. The chassis for all companies bespoke and are built to a close spec, the suspension, tires, brakes, etc. are all purpose built for the series and shared among the companies. They each develop their own engines, but they are ALL 4.0 L V8's used just in this series. A modern DTM car is basically a purpose built race car with some superficially close road car bodywork.

Finally! How else am I supposed to spend my lunch hour?
It’s stairway to heaven up the back of those front fenders
I cant believe they let him drive that engineering masterpiece. That is a once in a lifetime deal
Would be cool to see Chris drive a Super GT car. Have always been a big fan of the series and don't think it gets enough coverage outside Asia.
Chris Harris . . . Just tooooo awesome!! :D
Brain: frazzled. Your eyes at that part were brilliant :P
1.5 seconds a lap off Brunos? I wouldnt call that too shabby! Effing amazing!
God! This is awesome! CH keep on surprising us earthlings!
Absolutely amazing! Wow love BMW and good racing Chris :)
See them every year on Zandvoort, like chris says the racing is quite boring but the cars are amazing to look at and to hear in person :)
