    Thats true! My fear of flying is not of "flying" but of being stuck in a plane and thinking a panic attack and loss of control of myself will happen. Thank you.

  • @adamjackson9337
    @adamjackson9337 9 лет назад +215

    I believe this fear is not solely on "flying" itself but the fear of being contained in a place where when that plane gets up in the air thats it, your lose of control to stop that plane to get back to your "safe zone" has totally left your hands and you can't find any other way to control that situation hence the fight or flight starts to set in. So trying to find that balance between just letting go of your surroundings and stop trying to control the situation is key to stopping a panic attack,let the fear consume you and fight it...

      @BushidoBrown76 9 лет назад +6

      This my brother explains my situation exactly. If I could get up and walk around to take my mind off the flight I'd be okay but the fact that you are stuck or trapped and are committed to the situation make me feel claustrophobic. I'm working on it though. Good luck and peace and love to all who suffer from anxiety and depression.

    • @bichomaldito
      @bichomaldito 8 лет назад +3

      +Adam Jackson Yep. You nailed it. It's a strange combination between claustrophobia (fear of confined places) and agoraphobia (fear of being far from a place where you can get help or feel safe). Good news is this awkward sensation does NOT last long. You certainly feel it the first 15-20 minutes after take-off, but then you get used to the noises and movement (planes are pretty steady though). Our imagination makes it look a lot worse than it actually is.

    I took my 1st flight in YEARS just last weekend. It was way easier than I thought. Anxiety? Yes (I couldn't sleep well for 2 weeks before flying.. and walking towards the aircraft was quite a challenge lol), but no panic attack whatsoever. My advice for scary flyers would be: 1) 90% of what you think might happen will NOT happen. 2) It's important that you face your fear. Do not avoid it. 3) If possible start with a short flight (2 hrs) and exercise same or longer exposure soon after. 4) If possible ask someone you trust to fly along with you. That's what I did and it reduces anxiety significantly. 5) Try not to focus on your own thought or feelings. Talk to somebody (even if they're strangers or flight attendants) and let them know you're just trying to cope with anxiety. 6) Keep in mind that you are NOT a coward. We all have fears and people who are fine with flights might be scared of spiders or horror movies. You are on a plane, facing your deepest fear. That's not coward. That's pretty brave my friend. You'll be alright. Have a nice flight!

    Great advice! The ONLY way through the fear is to challenge it to get WORSE and NOT retreating. My whole life has been plagued by fear, I am now finally taking control. Nobody can help you but YOURSELF!

    my first panic attack occurred 35 years ago when I had a traumatic reaction to marijuana. first time i realised that my mind could be my own enemy. i think any panic i have subsequenly experienced since then was because of the scars from that one time. maybe conscious maybe a little subconscious. but as this video says, embracing the feelings, not running from them is the way forward.
    I really appreciate this informative vid. thankyou.

    hi, I have been there. im on meds. it has really help. don't block or fight against it, accept them, I also have a fear of getting one, and that makes it worst. there was a point where I couldn't even go out. I would cry and cry. don't loose faith. im doing better now. just pray and think positive.

    For anyone who is facing fear with fliying Im going to share my little story that maybe helpful.
    For 7 years I had some issue in my life as a result I was having fear attacks when I had a ride on a car or anything else, I was a healty handicap in some way and after 4 years I decided to confront my fear and travel with flight. I bought my ticket in advance and I prepared myself mentaly I took my son with me as the only source of comfort and safety, every time those horrible thoughts which are responsible for my fear tried to wear me up I conviced myself that no harm would ever affect me today as I was controlling the destiny and no more under the influence of the destiny.
    I had with me my ipad and of course my favourite, the feeling to reach my destination was quite comparable to someone who was just released from his captivity after such a long time, I felt that was reborn.
    If I could make it then you can make it.

    The one thing that has helped me overcome a panic attack or stop one before it happens is to hold my breath for a good few seconds.
    Something to do with low Carbon Dioxide levels in your body so when you hold your breath the bodys chemistry balances. I feel almost instant relief.

    This really works.For me, flying doesn't scare me...I understand that it is safer for me to fly than to drive, walk, dance, whatever.... I just have an overwhelming fear of having an actual panic attack while Im way the eff up there...and than freaking everybody else out,I live in Mexico and fly back and forth to visit my family in the states.I get on the plane now and I own it...I treat my panic attacks like a little bitch and demand that it gives me more...TOTALLY WORKS..a cocktail helps too..

    I suffer from Anxiety and Panic attacks and in the last 5 months I have flown 2 long haul flights. My top tips, 2 alcoholic drink before take off, keep yourself topped up at that level throughout the flight but most of all walk through the flight before you go and follow this easy process "I am walking on, I feel excited, I am sitting down and the seat feels like "X", and I am looking forward to my holiday, The plan makes "X" noise, but I am feeling excited. - It got me through and its really worked...I did see a therapist before hand who helped me with the above thought process. Good luck!

    I did not had a chance to fly when i was younger , my first experience of flight was 4 years back and on. I had managed to control my fear by constantly flying...at a point,i know some thing which calms me down..like listening to music, gums or sweets, orange juice(works well on me). A mere 2 hours flight seem to be at ease...i get these attack during take offs and landing(sometimes)....and i hate when the plane have to wait in the air to have a clear runaway(that body tense)....I love to have conversation to divert my attention...instead on focusing on the destination/flying...i divert my self on the important things i have to do...and i imagine its just a bumpy bus ride(works for me). I hope this is useful to some.

I've got two 8 hour flights to take on Monday to get home following a medical situation 😢 the unfortunate thing is when I finally land (18 hours later) I might need surgery within a few days! 😂 flying and surgery have ALWAYS been my biggest fears and now I can no longer run from them. I have to do both to live a happy life. I hope I can look back in a few weeks/months/years and say "I did it! I overcame my fears and I'm now happy and healthy because of it" I'll be using these techniques for all three situations. Anyway, wish me luck 😊✌

I have a flight coming up in May, which gives me some time to work on the panic attacks, but the truth is, if I have one, I'll have one. I might have to get the boat back home!On one of my flights I had children being sent to watch me having a terror, under a huge jumper. It doesn't help when children (or adults!) scream. Valium one tablet at a time every 15 minutes until you couldn't care less works for me every time. Get to the airport early, say 2 hours. Then have your first tablet. Make sure you have some food in your stomach(not junk food) otherwise you'll want to vomit the pill. Regardless of what people say(don't tell them anyway, it's your life) this works for me 100%. Forget other people's comments with the stigma of Valium. It works. I've travelled everywhere.

    Whisky, or any alcohol for that matter isnt a solution as it can increase Blood pressure and in turn may cause further nd or an acceleration of physical symptons, ie, racing heart, sweaty palms, uneasiness etc.
    These are great tehniques for an anxiety sufferer,not that simple for someone with acute Panic disorder. These techniques can work but must be practiced and perfected to acquire the confidence that it will work.

    It is unfortunate that Mark (the cartoon man in the video) doesn't realize that while he was driving or even taking public transportation to get to the airport for the flight he was in much more danger!

    While takeoff, I just try to think I'm the pilot and I'm flying the plane. Then mid flight, I'm playing Flight Simulator.

    How does this work for someone with agoraphobia? Not only I have a fear of heights, I also fear wide open areas.
    I feel comfortable riding a train going through a narrow valley where I can never see the horizon.
    I'm getting ready for a 7 hour flight to London in a month and don't think it's gonna be possible for me to do this without a sedative. I think I literally need to be knocked out before getting on the plane.

    I used to suffer from an anxiety disorder for about 15 years so I am very familiar with the horrible symptoms that anxiety & panic attack sufferers have to live with both physically & mentally. After spending countless hours of online research, going to specialists, online discussions & various medications I finally found great relief from my anxiety disorder which has calmed down dramatically over the past 18 months to the point I would now consider myself anxiety free. Ive written some tips for anxiety sufferers below:
    1. Take Valerian supplements. It is one of the best supplements for anxiety because it increases the availability of GABA in the brain. Valerian also helps with insomnia and is known to have very few side effects.
    2. Follow every step in the video & guide at panicsolutionkey.com anxiety to tackle the root of anxiety in a NATURAL way via the ’60 ss’. This is very important!
    3. Take up one of the following: tai chi, yoga or meditation (any other sport will also work). Not only will it boost serotonin in the brain through exercise but it will improve mental state due to offering yourself a distraction. While you are distracted for long periods of time your brain will even forget anxiety exists and so its important to do this for as long periods as possible.
    Try those two steps and hopefully you will get as much luck with getting rid of your anxiety as i did. Obviously regular exercise, certain diets (drink camomile tea) & losing weight etc will have a positive effect but you should try tackle the root cause of anxiety, and remain strong minded about it as you don’t have to suffer forever!
