I want to point out that this is designed for the fear of having a panic attack or high anxiety while flying because there is no escape. If your fear relates to a fear of the plane crashing due to some mechanical failure, there are lots of great books that teach which teaches you just how safe flying is.
What if’ thoughts of no escape and what might happen are the main fuel that drive a fear of flying. So let’s examine what is really the worst that can happen?
You know already that a panic attack won’t kill you. You are not going to suffocate or pass out.
You also know that the overwhelming majority of people who have full blown panic attack do so without people around even noticing. They do not lose control or act out in a impulsive or dangerous manner.
So the worst that really will happen is that you will feel very uncomfortable for a period of time in the airplane.
Thats the worst that will happen. Very unpleasant but not life threatening.
Ok so As you board the plane, remember you will be feeling anxious, expect that and dont be upset
    when it manifest.
Now take your seat and reframe the anxious feelings into excitement by telling yourself you feel excited. “I am excited to be flying, I am excited to be flying , I am excited to be flying”.
And so you should be. Flying is exciting. Allow your body to express that excitement.
What if thoughts are guaranteed. Defuse each and every one of them that tugs at you.
‘What if the anxiety gets really bad, I have no where to run?’
So what! If it gets really bad yes it will be uncomfortable but it wont kill me. It will pass.
    It can’t keep escalating.’
As you settle in, allow all the nervous arousal you feel to be there with you, let it accompany you on this journey. Invite it to stay and tell it that you know it will probably get more intense during take off and in moments of turbulence -but that’s ok.
You repeat over and over to yourself ‘I accept and allow this anxious feeling , I accept and allow these anxious thoughts’.
If at any point during the flight you feel that familiar flood of adrenaline and think you might be about to have a panic attack, respond with
“There you are. I was expecting you to show up at some point on this flight.”
You were never trying to run away from it; in fact, you were hoping it would emerge so you could move through it.
“Well lets get to it” Then demand more of the sensations that are intensifying. I know this is hard to do when in an enclosed situation like an airplane but trust me it is the right move.
The more you really demand to have an attack during the flight, the more empowered and confident you’ll feel in yourself.
You really place yourself in a position of power. It can sometimes help to become a bit emotional or excited with the fear when you demand it to show itself, because this helps the emotions to release and flow.
. Notice how the adrenaline has that wavelike effect. It courses through your body-and if you pay close attention, you’ll feel it pass quickly, in twenty or thirty seconds.
Nothing to fear here. After it passes, confidence returns-until the next wave comes, and the next, until eventually you notice the pattern. And, by not reacting, the effect on you is nothing more than bodily sensations minus the panic.
Once the feeling of heightened anxiety has subsided place your full attention on something. Engage with a pleasurable activity that interests you. That might mean reading a magazine, or watching some in flight entertainment. If you have relaxing music now is a good time to play it.
You will probably find it hard to sleep during the flight, but do try and relax into it as much as possible and maybe even enjoy the flight!

This is the first time one of these videos understands that not all fear of flying is of crashing. My agoraphobia is so severe, I can't even look out the windows. Thank you!

If I could deal with the anticipation of take off - most of my flying fears would be cured. I hate waiting, I hate getting on the plane and finding my seat and just waiting for the plane to start up. I get overwhelmed with the speed of the plane and knowing we are going to be going super fast. Once we get off the ground, my panic subsides. It's these few minutes of waiting that kill me. I'm going to fly in a few days, a short flight but I've been stressing about those few minutes on the plane and about takeoff like my life is going to end. It is silly. I am going to use all these tips and all of the TFT that I have learned. If you have any extra pointers for take off preparation that would be so helpful!!

I really love your work. I had my first panic attack in an airplane in 2012 and it was the most terrifying thing - because I didnt know what it was. I was really suffering and then I found Panic Away, and it really made a huge difference. Demanding more REALLY WORKS. Especially since you're first instincts are to RUN AWAY. It doesnt hurt that your voice is also really calming and non-judgemental :) THANK YOU. Cape Town, South Africa.

I've flown all over half the world and I'm still uncomfortable on planes. I have low-level to moderate hyper-ventilation for the entire flight. You wouldnt think it was even physically possible but thats it for me every flight. I don't think water boarding would be worse torture.
    Just a grim struggle to try breath without it turning in to massive hyperventilation.For 1, 2 , 3, 4,6, 7, 8,9,10.............hour flights.
Absolute torture. And I've tried everything. And here's the kicker: it actually gets even worse if I try to read or listen to music. I start to hyperventilate even more quickly.
Fucken torture, but I have to travel so theres fuck all I can do about it.....
Only bit of flying I like is descent and landing

I have a terrible fear of flying. I have a business trip in a few weeks and the anxiety is overwhelming to the point where I I'm getting diarrhea and heart palpitations. To make it worse, I have 2 connecting flights on the way home, and one of those flights is on one of those small regional jets. I know the odds are in my favor and the probability of anything bad happening is incredibly slim, but I just can't shake the fear that no matter how "good" the odds are, I AWAYS feel that MY flight will be that fatal one out of millions. I'm so tired of feeling this way. There's so many places I want to see that require flying. I know I can't predict the future and nothing is certain, but I don't wanna die from flying. I just wanna be able to enjoy flying, whether it be domestic or international, knowing that I'm gonna be ok and nothing bad will happen and that it's not my fate to die in a plane crash/explosion/incident/etc. I do wanna sign up for the SOAR courses but I can't afford it at the moment. My wife wants to fly to Hawaii next year for her birthday. I'm already nervous cos it's 100% over ocean.

I am in the same struggle as you, my friend. I have a couple of flights coming up and the fear is already here. I love aviation. Wanted to be a pilot growing up and even got my private pilots license in high school. I have had anxiety for as long as I can remember but as I have gotten older it has developed and gotten worse for seasons and I have also had panic attacks in the past. I think my issue is not the flying itself...I am very knowledgeable with aviation. I know its safety and find it fascinating. I think I am scared of getting severe anxiety or a panic attack on the plane and having no where to go, no where to run to once the door closes and we are flying and being embarrassed as you say as to what other people might think. I know I will not die because of anxiety or a potential anxiety attack. It is a difficult beast to navigate and hard to pin down. I thought I had developed a fear of flying(and to a degree maybe I overthink things with flying now), but now after having watched this video, I think it is a fear of having anxiety and being stuck. Some other person commented on the video and said they had agoraphobia. Have you looked into this? When I just googled this and briefly read about it, I think I may have pin pointed what my issue is. It is complex but hopefully we can figure this out!

All these clips from experts do NOT address fear arising out of corruption in the aviation industry. Airlines cut corners with the procedures and lives are lost. How will a passenger know whether or not there has been diligent compliance with the rules???
