UK/Dutch military cooperation is quite extensive. The Diesel/Electric part of your submarine commanders training is done here in the Netherlands. Our and your Marines form a single battlegroup within NATO (there's probably all kind of other cooperation going on on the beach and in the sky too).

@Uncle Joe Being mentioned in the same sentence as the Koreans and the Japanese is a huge compliment, my country is tiny compared to them and especially the Japanese are expert submariners.
You can't not love the pig, but there's little room for nostalgia in geopolitical hard power. I'm just an outsider looking in but I think the super hornets and F-35s you have now can do the same things the F-111 used to do but better and cheaper.

Really? Well if you want to read up on some Dutch submariner stories from WW2 check the Dutch out, some hair-raising and covert stuff against Germans, Italians and Japanese, a Dutch sub with some great stories would be the O-21( one of their many kills was a German U-boat near Gibraltar with an almost impossible torpedo hit).

"Sank"? try, "fired all its torpedoes at"! Because once a sub does that, it loses its stealth advantage and has to "Get the hell out of Dodge"! and evade the angry escorts that now know where it is. And as the SINKEX on the USS AMERICA proved, it'll take more than a few torpedoes from one of these Eurotrash stealth boats to ACTUALLY sink an American Bird Farm!

    • @shrimptabasco8974
      @shrimptabasco8974 2 года назад +32

@@SmegHedd117 A SINKEX is different than a combat situation. During SINKEX, they weren’t actually trying to sink her immediately so it’s not a very good comparison although it does says something about how hard it is to actually sink such a big and sturdy vessel. Since this happened during an exercise and there wasn’t a real torpedo hitting the carrier it’s harder to say for certain if she would’ve sunk. Those mk48 torpedoes are no joke though and getting hit by one, even if it’s a big carrier, will do at least enough damage to probably force a ship to return to a harbor for repairs.
It remained undetected throughout the attack. Even though the sub fired green smoke grenades after firing a torpedo. Guess the US navy wasn’t paying attention..
Its quite an accomplishment for any ship to penetrate a full escort undetected and get enough torpedoes out to hit multiple ships. This says a lot about the stealth capabilities of a diesel electric submarine. The Dutch submarine division is actually in high regard among NATO partners. Calling these “Eurotrash” frankly says more about you then it does about the submarines.

    • @SmegHedd117

@@shrimptabasco8974 Touched a nerve, did I? Good. Get your terms correct then. "Its quite an accomplishment for any ship to penetrate a full escort undetected and get enough torpedoes out to hit multiple ships." THAT'S what that sub did! NOT scored enough hits to SINK the carrier! And NOW you change your story to say, "Multiple Ships". Listen up Armchair Admiral, I served in the US Navy, on a Frigate, and a CGN. We participated in many ASW exercises. once that sub was detected, it would not have survived to get off a second volley, Bet on it! If in a wartime situation, Nuclear ASROCS would have been used to kill it, to ensure the survival of the carrier! the US Navy Does NOT SCREW AROUND IN WARTIME! WE play to win! Ask the Japanese!

Aaron, my compliments for this awesome video, as a dutchman it makes me proud of our very modest navy to hear it spoken of so highly by someone with your experience and knowledge
One thing i would like to add, as of april 1st (sadly, not a joke), the latest news on replacing the walrus-class is that the selection process has once again been delayed. Planning now is to have the requirements finished and out the door by years end, after which DCNS/Damen/Thysenkrupp get to respond. The expectations are that any new boats will enter service somewhere in the 2035-38 timeframe, forcing the Walrus-class to again extend its lifetime. In order to achieve this, one and quite possible a second boat will be taken out of commission to serve as a parts donor to keep the final two boats operational until the new ones are ready, leaving the Royal Netherlands Navy with just two operational submarines from the late 20s to the late 30s.
Personally im quite frustrated by this turn of events, as it means our submarine capabilities will lag behind considerably during a time in which global tensions are nearing cold-war levels again, and our men and women on these boats (and those left boat-less) will not have the equipment they should have, no disrespect meant to the walrus-class boats off course.

My father is a retired Dutch Navy veteran. In 2000-2001 he was posted at the Dutch Embassy in Abu Dhabi, and I remember him arranging for me and my younger brother to take a tour of one of the Walrus submarines that had made port there. Watching this video brought back memories of seeing the Con, berths and Torpedo room. I distinctly remember the crew letting us peer through the periscope. It was a fantastic experience that I'm sure I'll never forget.
I hope to see more videos from you about the Dutch Navy. Despite its rather small size, our surface fleet is very modern and boasts capabilities navies around the world would be envious of. I'd love to hear your analysis on those newer ships!

Nice to hear a proper briefing about these four beauties, it made me almost blush being dutch with so much praise! Newsflash : defence budgets in the Netherlands are up 40%,and one of the changes in theWalrus-replacement program is the next subs will have cruise missiles and will be A-quality instead of 'B'-quality was told yesterday in the Defense-nota 2022 so hold on to your flippers because that excludes the Type 212D and pushes forward the A-26 Oceanic even more because that is one more American system for the French to deal with in their quite noisy shorten Barracuda. Hoping for that big beautiful Saab / Damen pimped out A-26NL Oceanic creating a noiseless black hole in the Barents Sea and some MARSOF on board.

Interesting submarine type. They don't always need to be big and nuclear to be useful.
About the X-tail fins: they should work like a V-tail in an airplane. There are mechanical mixers available to convert elevator/rudder input to V-tail output, though with a computerized mixer you have more flexibility to fine-tune the response. With an X-tail, aileron functionality should be possible too, though I don't know how useful this would be in a sub.
The V-tail in an airplane may be a bit more efficient, since airplanes lean into the turn and will need elevator in addition to rudder for the turn anyway, which then can be done mostly with only one control surface. I imagine subs lean into turns too, though power efficiency while turning is probably much less important for a sub than for a sailplane trying to catch a thermal. Better ground clearance would be the major benefit for a sub.

A bit late but you make good points , and there are systems on ships these days called DP 1,2 and 3 that are so good they can manouver and sit on a location in all types of weather. Those systems and the computer system in particular is highly advance d and used in most ships these days , and older ships beeing updated or upgraded to these kinds of technological progress.

I really appreciate that you made a video containing so much information, I learned a lot from this. I won't remember the entire lecture of course but the general points you made about how Dutch subs are surprisingly capable given their age and tiny numbers will stick.
Covert intelligence gathering is exactly the kind of thing Dutch armed forces should be focussing on. We trust our neighbours Germany and France, we don't need a large land army to defend our borders. Our safety is guaranteed through alliances with other countries and what better way to support those other countries than to use our century long blue water naval experience to operate a small sub that can go anywhere around the world and do almost anything.

RDM was already in trouble while they were building the Walrus-class. A possible lifeline seemed to be Taiwan wanting to buy about half a dozen of these submarines but after being bullied by the Chinese government the Dutch parliament refused to provide an export license and rather let the RDM go belly-up. Taiwan went to the French instead and the French didn't give a damn about Chinese threats.
BTW the Dutch submarine service gained a solid reputation during WW2 for their operations in the Pacific, through their aggressive deployment under command of Commander Conrad "Ship-a-day" Helfrich. In the first weeks of the war the tiny force of Dutch submarines sank more Japanese ships than the British and Americans combined earning the commander his nick-name. After the fall of the Dutch colonies the Dutch submarine service were seconded to the British Royal Navy.

A vtail is different from a xtail its no a double vtail on top and below.
Even with a radio controlled plane you need a computer for using a x tail. A vtail i just need to change some radio settings

Great video, but you got 1 detail wrong. The Dutch navy only ever had 2 Zwaardvis class boats, the Zwaardvis, and the Tijgerhaai. (both retired) The other 2 were export boats sold to Taiwan and remain in active service with them. Currently the Dutch navy only has 4 submarines of the Walrus class. But can only field 1 of them at a time. This is because at any one time 2 boats are in maintenance/modernization. the 4th boat sadly hasn't operated in a long time due to lack of crew. In the next few years 1 more boat will retired leaving only 2 boats the "Dolfijn" and the "Bruinvis". Fun fact, I had the opportunity to come on board the Bruinvis some years ago and got a detailed tour of the entire boat from some of the officers :)
Edit: the Dolfijn and Bruinvis will remain in service into the mid 1930s until the replacement class is FINALLY build.

As far as the Walrus class I can say they are distinct in having the praise of special operations forces throughout the western world, they are always mentioned as exceedingly capable with missions like insertion and other "special" missions, both due to her size and the fact it was always planned as a feature and really integrated into the platform, thanks for mentioning how she can BE a towed array herself and not need one cause that's true lmao

I'm not a sub connoisseur but I heard the walrus class is the best shallow water specialist in the world. Being capable of getting a lot closer to the shore than a lot of other subs. This makes them a very good asset for NATO for intelligence gathering and special forces deployments.

Well, the Walrus class is a direct improvement of the Zwaardvisch design. We had abouth 6 (2 Zwaardvisch, 4 Walrus class) in the early '90s, although HNLRMS Walrus was delayed due to on-board fire during it's construction, so don't quote me on that. Zwaardvisch and Tijgerhaai where decomissoned in '94 & '95 and sold to Taiwan bugging the People's Liberation Army.
And I've got the original Dutch version "In deepest secrecy" laying within literal arms reach.

Damen is a Dutch company which might influence the final decision on what new submarine will be bought. I hope national pride, politics and financial considerations don't play too large a part in the final decision and the Dutch government will make their purchasing decision based purely on what platform suits the operational needs of the navy the best.

max depth of the walrus class is officially 300+ metres, some sources cite design depth should be double that of the zwaardvis class, which is 220 metres. That's probably one of the reasons different steel is used. of course depth is dependent on nuts, bolts, seals, piping, valves etc, but double the zwaardvis class would be 440 metres.... it's still highly classified, but one would assume the 1000 ft is quite a bit on the conservative side, and I wouldn't be surprised is most if not all capabilities which are public nare on the 'conservative side'

Can not recommend Jaime Karreman's book enough, it explains a lot. E.G. why the Dutch subs ended up operating in the Med, not the most logical place as seen from the Netherlands (1950s Dutch diesel subs operating off the North Cape of Europe was not the best application of submarine power it turned out).
One thing not mentioned explicitly is the fact that Dutch subs need to be long range to reach the Caribbean. They make fuel stops in the Azores I believe. The Caribbean is also the reason why Dutch subs can withstand the hot air better than German or Swedish subs.
An anecdote tells that after the Arabian Sea / off Somalia hunting pirates episode of one of the Dutch subs the Germans wanted to do the same but found out their subs couldn't reach the area by themselves and could not deal with the hot air.
As for nuclear propulsion, don't know if it really was considered for the Walrus class. Back in the late 50s / early 60s a study was done but there was one overriding reason: the USA wasn't willing to share technology with such a small country / navy. One of the cited reasons was lack of knowledge of all things nuclear. Sounds familiar (looking at you Aussies)?
We have progressed on that issue since with a research reactor, a reactor that produces isotopes, ultracentrifuge and 2 nuclear powerplants (one still in operation) but I wonder if the USA would now be willing to share the knowledge or allow other NATO nations to share it after the whole Australian saga? Maybe the French will come up with a new good deal to make up for the loss of the Australian subs?
This might explain some of the holdup in the decisionmaking process. It seems it might yet take a while before the first new sub will be build as no final decision has been reached.

Correct , the dutch submariners quickly realized the need for climate controle early 1900s when operating in the far east and even had a cooling unit for their batteries , with some engineers making modifications so the submarine could be cooled as well. The Dutch always had specific specifications , and quite some inovations over the past 120 years.
