I really didn't understand New York winning. I mean, she was scored second to the last at the press interviews. She barely made it to Top 5. She did fine at the Top 5 interviews however come Top 3, she stuttered answering the question. Even Julie and Ali mentioned after the Top 3 Q&A that she lost her composure but at the end she won? Tennessee or California should have won.

To be honest, loved her final answer, and that is what made her win. The 90s were very fair in terms of deciding who wins based on the final answer alone. In my opinion too, she had the cutest face and was routing for her to win from the beginning. I was so happy that she won that night. I know she failed to make the cut at Miss Universe 1999, but I believe she could have easily replaced Ghana and India. Kimberly Pressler had the total package to be a top 10 semi-finalist at Miss Universe.

Her winning was a mistake she was the first Miss USA not to make the semi finals in over 20 yrs for some reason Miss California represented America in the Miss World pageant I wonder if Tennessee declined that honor because at that time the first runner-up became Miss World USA and went to the Miss World pageant

Gosh stop bashing the winner! Yes she was unplaced at Miss Universe but I felt she was facially prettier than some of the ladies that won Miss USA! And TN and CA were pretty but lacked some personality compared to NY. That probably gave her the edge over the other two.
In my eyes Miss New York was deserve for crowning. Miss Cali have not spirit when she known she is 2nd runner-up and Miss Tenn were not beautiful enough for the winner.

I remember the morning after NY won, one of those shock jock radio guys said "The new Miss USA looks, sounds like she's about 11 years old." I didn't think she was that bad, but I was convinced California would win. Tennessee was well spoken but looked too tall and lean in that unflattering gown.
