  • A new county-wide station alerting system for fire and medical calls went into service today! Here at #SVFireandMedical we staged this first test call to demonstrate what the crews will now see and hear when dispatched. The system is complete with maps, call information, a response timer, and automated dispatching, which saves valuable time compared to conveying the information over the radio. Crews get information in multiple ways, including via a smartphone app. This system greatly enhances fire and medical dispatch responses county-wide, and we’re thrilled to see it in action!

Studies have shown that this type of tone is not good for long-term health of first responders. The best one to use is a long, single pitched tone which the volume slowly increases from 0-100% over the course of 5-10 seconds. That way the brain and heart don't go from rest to full adrenaline in the middle of the night during sleep. First responders already have enough of a high risk of heart failure, and believe it or not, the types of tones used for dispatch can make a huge difference. I believe Phoenix (the company who made this type of dispatching software/hardware, was the ones who took part in the study.

Can’t run on the job ;) let your brain dig through memories of you seeing FF’s run on the job, it simply doesn’t happen in real life. For many good reasons.
      1) if they were kitted out, your spine would absolutely hate you for running and it wouldn’t last long
      2) slip and falls, specially on scene when the thousands of gallons of water you dumped freeze
      3) can’t run with a hose, try it, you will only tire your self for no reason
      4) imagine all the office doors flying open with ppl running out of them while a buncha FF’s running down the hall… this isn’t a movie lol

I think the system should say this is a test. Do not respond or take action. This is a test. Do not respond or take action. That announcement should only happen when the system is being tested, so that responders do not get stressed about having to respond to a test.

Here's something you might be forgetting: Quints. That is, Quintuple Combination Engines, which look like a truck but have everything an engine has as well. Some departments classify them as engine companies, while others might call them truck, ladder, tower or quint. It's all about how that department wants to identify that appliance. In this case, Engine 203 might actually be a Quint, not necessarily an actual engine.

You would think that a different alerting system for first responders including me for only 3 years while I was selling S.T.A.R.S. calendars and collecting donations up to 5 years ago could have prevented Alberta Health Services from calling me at 12:30 AM the other day just to ask if I was okay. Only because I had admited to some family members that I wasn't feeling well for 5 days. Now as result according to a social worker, 2 policemen and a public health nurse to follow up after that disruptive to my life phone call at age 66 now the only set of advice the same organization is gives me on how I can avoid my sleep being disrupted in the future in the same way - Is for me to shut my cell phone off and unplug my landline too just before going to sleep at night after closing my drapes right away after dark and locking my doors. After dark which happens here in Edmonton, Alberta Canada at 4:30 pm on some winter days.

Walk slow, don't run guys. Don't even walk fast. Time doesn't matter. Fires get smaller over time after all the fuel has been consumed. Actually, don't even bother going to the fire, just let it burn itself out. Stay at the station in your safe-space. Safety first!

The cost of the computer generated voice is low compared to staffing an additional person in dispatch. I don’t pay much attention to the crappy sounding computer voice. The address is on the MDT when I get in the unit. When responding from home the address is sent SMS.
