Maybe because she can be her own person, they should’ve talked about her more for sure, but she doesn’t deserve to be over shadowed by her parents like she’s prolly been for her whole life
Wathmch the new gen video where they ask her why she chose nc state. All her teammates say for the team Culture or something. She says because her mom told her to!
Wassermann is amazing, even though she usually loses to Henes, its usually just barely in the last hundred meters, because of Henes's kick, but Wassermann fights to the end, each time.
What an amazing race! Any one who's ever run a 5k on the track or in XC will know that pained look these girls had in the last two laps. Pushing through that pain is an achievement on its own but they managed to accelerate through it. Well done girls. All of you!
Very poor announcers, both of them mispronouncing the winner’s name during the final lap. It’s not as if Elly Henes is an unknown … she’s a 10-time All-American and daughter of an NCAA Champion in the 5000m. Good grief.
Totally agree. And Henes marked every important move, looked relaxed and in control; and it’s like she’s hardly even there in the race chat. And, btw, Chelengat had a great double imo, so she’s definitely a star in my book. Gutsy race by Wasserman too.
It's unfortunate how this announcing crew tends to pick out a specific athlete for most events that they are going to focus on, in this case Chelangat. It would be much more interesting if they could find the stories as the race develops. On this day, Henes was the class of the field. She was never further back than 5th, she upped the tempo and reeled in Orton mid-race and then made a decisive move with 200 to go. Wassermann put herself in position to have a chance at the end and Hasz came from way back early. Those three were the stories of this particular race.
And these two did the same thing at the 2021 NCAA 5K Indoors, again hyping Chelangat (third place), while ignorning NC State's Tuohy just like they ignored "Hines" (Henes).
It's as if Jill Montgomery can't make up her mind. She says you want to be as close to the rail as possible. Then she worries about a runner (the announcers' featured performer) being boxed in -- and there's still 600+ meters to go.
I opened up these comments just to say I’m about to slit my wrists in order to escape listening to them, especially her. Shut the f…. up already, my God! If you go to the comment section of every running event the most common comment is how bad these announcers suck.
yeah, she was bad before, but this year's NCAAs took the cake---too bad since the women's distance races were really good this year, but she would drivel on about V02 max training...
If you watch these races, understand this isn't the only activity these women do. Sometimes, they also run a 10, 000, 5,000, or a long jump. They all are great. Congrats to this winner putting a stamp on it.
God this commentary was the worst of the meet. Talking about someone getting 5th during the top finishes. Attrocious You can't research 1 athlete and only comment on them
made her sound like a cheetah on the plains of africa, i have to say that all the commentary for the most part is really awful, i feel lucky we have some good ones here in uk. i have really enjoyed watching these champs though, really great especially the mens 1500
god, the commentary in distance races is always so horrid. Explaining 1000 meter intervals? Wtf is this? No insight on how the race is developing or what the athletes' tendencies are. Adds absolutely nothing to the race. 14 mins into the race and we are finally having mild discussions about positioning and tactics
Agreed. The commentators also clearly knew nothing about any of the athletes besides Chelangat…so they talked about her constantly. Even as Henes and Wasserman were sprinting the last 100, they were talking about where Chelangat was. Do some research, y’all.
I know, the entire middle of the race was like "hey, did you guys know? one of the athletes has a relative in the stands that is cheering for her. see? we'll put a video-in-video of her relative there for several minutes to prove that he cheers for her" lol
The training the commentator keeps droning on about in every race is total nonsense. It's literally physically impossible for anyone to run the workout she described of 5-7 x 1km at 3 km pace with only 1 minute recovery. She's continuously spouting utter nonsense mixing up terms with threshold training, VO2max, etc. in ways that make no sense scientifically. Please talk about the athletes in the race, not generic pseudo-science training bullshit that doesn't apply to any specific athlete in reality. Can't wait until she's gone.
Well there was stuff about Chelangat's tendencies but she appears to be the only athlete in the field either announcer knows anything about, considering they couldn't even get the winner's (hardly an unknown) name right. So when Chelangat drops out of contention there's literally nothing intelligent to say. Not to mention the stuff about Chelangat being so over the top and borderline demeaning. Predator, really? She's not a leopard, she's a runner. I wouldn't bother to comment almost a year later except that the same exact thing happened from the same exact people in this year's indoor meet, and the outdoor one is coming up soon so expect more.
Awful comentary. Tired of the VO max story, and the winner never got mentioned until the result. And her mother, who is her coach, won this event in her NCAA Career.
Why are they overhyping this chalanga girl. First she was going to win the 10000 then the 5000 is her better race but she gets destroyed in both races and doesn’t even medal in the 5000. Why not talk more about the people who are actually going to win the race.
*Announcers: "Hines looks relaxed." Producer whispers in their ear: ["It's Henes! 6x ACC Champion. 2x Olympic Qualfier. 2021 ACC *Outdoor Track Performer of the Year. Daughter of NC State Women's LD coach!"] *Announcers: "And here comes Elly Henes!" What do these two have against NC State?
Some of the commentary was clearly filler but I mostly agree. There are hundreds of competitors over several days and thousands competing in regionals with so many storylines. It's challenging to have insightful and detailed commentary unless you hire commentary specialists for the disciplines.
Exactly, I see people complaining about the commentators not pronouncing the athletes names correctly as if there aren’t thousands of athletes covered throughout the year
That's what everyone is saying. They're not doing their job. The training "science" they keep harping on is utter nonsense; they can't pronounce the athletes names; they ignore the leaders a lot of the time. They don't know hardly anything about most of the athletes. The color announcer is only commenting on max 4-5 races, and doesn't even bother to read the athlete bios before the meet.
You have to laugh...talks about how 'favoured' athlete has all these gears and is going to pounce in last mile... ignoring the fact that the pace is visibly dropping and the 'favoured' athlete is obviously struggling. Awful commentary.
I like when they say both. This is America still, and we still use miles for most things. But I like meters to, because I follow international racing too. So both, not either or.
Brooo that lady is sooo bad we get it you have to do workouts to get fast, we don’t need to know the specific workouts that come to her mind like ommmggg stop giving so many examples! Bad commentator

Elly is a class act; nice interview at the end.

nobody noticed how comfortable and easy Elly looked the entire race...until last 50m.

@enlightenedschuffer that is the rub - she was unknown to the announcing team despite her credentials
