    Thanks for the great in-depth comparison. You weren't kidding about this coming soon! Oh man, this helps flush out the comparison but still such a hard call to make. I hear that both have their place but without wanting to buy two devices at the same time it's just so hard to choose. Part of me thinks the tinkering with the RP2 would be fun another part just says wait until something super polished comes out that doesn't struggle with newer systems and in the meantime enjoy the buttery polish of the RG350m. Anyway love your stuff keep it coming and thanks again!

    • @RetroGameCorps
      @RetroGameCorps  4 года назад

      Haha, glad to be of "help"! It's a hard decision to make, I'm happy that I have both so that I don't have to be torn about it. I do think that everything up to PSX is just about perfect on the 350M, and I agree that while the RP2 (and the 351, I suspect) will help show that there is a market for better chipsets, the generation that comes out *after* this will be even better. If we stay on this same trajectory, I expect we'll see the next big thing by this time next year.

    • @minimoe2807
      @minimoe2807 4 года назад +1

      One more Pro I'd like to point out on the RP2. You can bluetooth a controller to it and HDMI to a bigger screen and use it as a retro home console and use the same save states as you do when your on the go. And because it is Android (6 for now updating to 8 in late October) any Android app you use can he big screen as well.

      @@RetroGameCorps Yeah I think the polish of the RG350m (though I am considering the RG350P too, but you really sold me on the fit and finish of the m) is pulling me in that direction, not to mention the Pico-8 capabilities (which led me to your channel in the first place. (one more thing I am thankful for the Pico-8 for!) I may just wait until the market matures a bit more so that I can really faithfully and smoothly play N64, Dreamcast, DS etc.! Any chance you would test to see if the Pico-8 player will run Pullfrog? It's one of my absolute favorite Pico-8 games and I'd be so bummed if I bought the RG350 only to find out it doesn't run properly for some reason. Here's the link, google doesn't like it when you just search for "pullfrog" much, keeps trying to autocorrect it to something else. Thanks so much, really appreciate your content! www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=38636

      @sethtoybes9392 4 года назад

      @@minimoe2807 That is a serious and undeniable pro. I'd love to do that but I think at this point I think the RP2 may be trying to be all things to all people but might not be fully nailing any one of them. And while I do love a hacky/tinkery multi-tool sometimes I just want the right tool for the job. I may end up going RG350m/p and just use original consoles or even a Raspberry Pi4 for the big screen and as I said above to Retro Game Corps wait until the next-gen for the "newer" gen consoles. But I am still weighing it. Thanks for the added pro. Just makes the decision that much hard! ;)

    I have both and I prefer the RG350. The RP2 is SO much work to set up and using Android without a touchscreen is painful. The RG350 feels much faster in the OS and there's no switching between control modes to use a mouse cursor like the RP2. RP2 has better sounding speakers, but not as good button feel as the RG350. Nothing about the RP2 is simple!

    Extremely thorough, comprehensive and well thought out review. The only thing I would add or update is that on the RP2 the Flycast app is running a good amount of DC games and at a much better FPS than what the emulator you used on this video was able to do. The Flycast app is a significant boost and can run a ton more games.

For me, wireless support was the main feature that I looked for in portable retrogaming, not only because I can sync battery saves of previous gaming session easily, but also retroachievementsupport through Retroarch was something that couldn't afford to not have... so, for now Retrod Pocket 2 for portable gaming is the proper way to fulfill nostalgia and sense of completion.

    Just a tremendous review. Much appreciated. The colors are somewhat divisive. Where you liked the RG350M as being a bit warmer and having deeper hues for blues, browns, and other colors, I watched another review that showed how the white balance was off. The 350M’s whites are more yellow, which don’t look so great for pure white ... but maybe add a bit of warmth for the non-whites.
    One item you didn’t cover that I’d like to know more about is the left side control layout. The 350M obviously stacks the D pad on top of the left analog stick. The RP2 stacks the left analog on top of the D pad. With so many of these games (GBA, NES, SNES, etc.) leveraging the D pad, what did you like better? Conventional wisdom is that it’s nicer to have the D Pad up top (like the 350M), but I’d love to hear your side-by-side thoughts.

    • @RetroGameCorps
      @RetroGameCorps  4 года назад

      Hi, great feedback. Yes, the 350M is a little warm, the original RG350 actually had the best white balance I've seen so far (here is an example, forgive my terrible lighting: retrogamecorps.files.wordpress.com/2020/08/rg350vsrg350m-coloring2-1.png). It might be a *twinge* green in tint, but I'm just using my eyeball here (I was a food photographer for many years). Honestly thought, when I'm playing these systems without having another device around, it's very hard to discern any issues.
      Okay, as far as d-pad orientation, I'm probably in the minority but I do prefer that the d-pad is below the analog stick, like how it is on the Nintendo Switch or Xbox controllers. It just feels more balanced in the hand to me, to be a bit offset.

    I loved that you used other known consoles to explain how to buttons feel like. I heard that the RP2 has stiff buttons but I had no idea what this means. I thought that it is a major bug and a deal breaker but if they feel like a 3ds's buttons that is a okay with me.
    I'm still trying to figure out if I actually need all the power the RP2 offers (in exchange for all the work), but having the possibility is always good

    In my opinion the superior experience is on the PowKiddy X15.
    While yes, the D Pad isn't really a D-Pad it feels good for what it is
    you can pull off hadokens with a little practice. Not bad. The reason,
    I say it's superior is simply due to it's power. It can play Sega Saturn,
    Sega Dreamcast and most of anything else save for PS2. It's a big screen
    touch screen. It plays Android games properly and is a genuine value for the money.
    Now, there is a Yewge or Huge caveat here. You need to install the "Clean rom." It's a
    process you don't have to do with these systems however, once done it really opens the
    system up and you can have mega fun.

    To me, the big deciding factor for going with the RG350 series devices has been build quality and support. Software community is far more active, and the interface is more polished, plus the hardware itself is just built better. I definitely feel like the RG350 is going to last longer and be more enjoyable, even without the extra horsepower. The few systems that the RP2 can run over the RG350 are not fully supported, and while none of these will be great for input lag, Opendingux seems marginally better than Android.

      @@RetroGameCorps I agree completely, but your nickled and dimed comment left me with a bad taste of what your review had to offer. Apologies if I offended you in any way, but you tried to say the RP2 will end up costing you the same as a 350m because you had to pay for a $5 emulator.... that is fully capable of running well on the RP2 and not at all on the 350m. Do you see what I am saying? You can't make that assumption when one system is clearly more powerful than the other and able to run emulation of systems the other cannot.

      @@x7slim8x I get what you're saying, and I don't disagree. My point with the comment about price is to show that while the RP2 has a lower sticker price, you could eventually pay as much money as the RG350M over time. For some people, that bottom dollar is important, so I thought it was worth mentioning. Now in terms of sheer value, the RP2 wins hands down, even despite paying for premium emulators (that won't even play on the 350M at all, as you said).

      @@jaysanprogramming6818 Yea, I meant like the names of console reiterations can get confusing, especially if they use "New" in the name which will soon become "old". To this day I'm still not sure what the Super Marios on the Wii and DS are actually called.
      The "XL" naming scheme is more tolerable since it's simple and straight-forward (clear indicator of a size difference). Using "New" as part of the naming scheme just bugs me a lot since it complicates things. Not to mention the "New" name scheme stacks with the "XL", making the name way too long. "New" sometimes can be mistaken for meaning that the item is in new condition.
      "2DS" naming scheme is also confusing because it makes it seem as if it's a different console from the 3DS when they play basically the same games. Words like "New" and "XL" are additions to the main product name that is 3DS, but when you modify the one and only main product name to name another version of essentially the same console, it's almost kind of misleading. Kind of reminds me of the situation of how people didn't buy the Wii U because they thought it was a gamepad addon. Not sure what Nintendo is really thinking lol
