He really did. Pokémon Yellow made a lot of direct references to the anime, including the gym leaders' teams (excluding Blaine and Giovanni. No Mewtwo for the latter, lol) and how NPCs give you the Kanto starters.
NPCs in Yellow give all 3 to you as direct references to the anime. Like with Charmander, a guy on Route 24 who's supposed to be Damian says he regrets treating it poorly (except in the episode he bragged about abandoning it)

For some reason Lt Surge and Misty will always be my favourite gym leaders. Thos bubble beam, mega kick, thunderbolt attacks... did some damage.
Heh, when playing Yellow I just used a Level 24 Diglett against Lt. Surge's Raichu, and won with two hits of "Dig!"
The AI is too stupid in Gen1.
You dont deserve yellow version if you dont face raichu with your pika
