Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

a Scottish punk story that duznay involve THE EXPLOITED ? mental!👍😁👍
Skids tae.
Or oi polloi
I quite liked the Motors....😅😅
Livi punks
@@james6901 saw Oi Poloy with GBH decades ago. Motors sort of post punk. Exploited and Skids man. SLF not Scottish but might as well be.
As someone who has made clothing with a sewing machine, I've often thought about the agonizing long hours the seamstresses of long ago spent hand sewing tiny, perfect stitches with poor lighting and no doubt a small salary. And then the rich sob wants it cut up! Looks like a wonderful museum. Maybe I'll see it one day. Thanks for showing it.
It was a proof of duelling prowess. Two brothers would wear twin identical doublets ( hence the terms origins ) they would duel with razor sharp rapiers, each endeavouring to maintain the strict pattern. Those that survived the skirmish got to keep the said item of clothing. Very few did.
El Zorro of San Diego visited Scotland 2 or more centuries ago, but amended the practice to slashing Z 's along the garment. If the wearer relinquished his chattels with good grace he got to keep his doublet and his life. 🤔 🤺 🤥
Yeah, lazy people weren't good craftspeople back then. You actually had to do REAL work.
@@rickwilliams967 Insufferable outlook on life, bet you're a really fun guy.
I have heard that the slits in clothing were to imitate sword slashes and make the wearer look like a cool duelist type 🤷♂️
Ooooh
Today is my birthday,I'm the big 60 years old or young and I'm looking forward to the next 60 years
Yay
Blessed Breathday!
Happy birthday fellow history enthusiast, dont get to hammered or you'll forget to like comment and subscribe
Let us know when you reach 120 years.Cheers!
@@stewartgillis4851 well maybe not that long but at least to 110 okay and thank you 🥤☺️🤗
Brüce! 🤘Mëtäl! 🤘
The doublet is so wonderfully preserved.
This guy is awesome, knows how to keep your attention, funny too. The part seeing the statue with the baby sized bits and the smiling strut away had me laughing.
😜
Fascinating. The "swagger" was a great touch!
😜
My ancestors were grown out of the dirt of Perthshire/Angus (From the Bonnie hoose of Airlie) and multitudes returned to that soil as well. The old home was Alyth and every town in a 50 mile radius had our cousins dwelling there. My Gran and Gramps were from there via Glasgow and Edinburgh to Ottawa Canada. My oldest is going to the auld Country and is going to hike from the Orkney's down the East Coast and then on to Angus and Perthshire. Wish him luck. Best regards, Giovanni.
Giovanni? Well that sounds like the most Scottish name I've ever heard, must be Gaelic? Nah it's garlic 😂👌🇮🇹🏴... Sorry no disrespect intended, I'm only joking.. but it must be hard to be Roman & Scottish, he won't know which side of Hadrian's wall he belongs on LoL 😂 but seriously, I do wish him luck on his hike, that is a trip I would love to take. God bless
@giovanni5063 I hope to see you at my live show in Ottawa www.thegladstone.ca/scotland-history-tours/
Bruce, I finally watched The Lost King yesterday. You were pretty good in it. Almost cried twice.
😎
Happy birthday Bruce. Have a great day.
This is a wonderful video. I studied the History of Costume at university before changing my major to business and still appreciate the historical clothing so much.
Another insightful video. Thank you for sharing.
My pleasure!
Love your passion, Bruce. Keep keeping up the good work 🌞
Thanks, will do!
Fascinating history. Looking at the paintings in the background reminds me of the huge contribution that Scottish artists have made to our cultural history. Keep it up.
Good point!
Thanks for another great video. I can not imagine all the time and effort that went into that outfit. It's beautiful.
Very cool! Que, "I don't wanna be a superhero..." (I only know a lil metal adjacent punk, but admittedly had those dumb chains for a min. as a youngster.)
Dude, a real life "Adam's family" style of historical high fashion artifact!? !! I'm again in awe of how close these histories are.
Great video! I love seeing the area your walking in. History is important and arts.
Glad you enjoyed it
A new fashion....a new style....Will keep things ticking for awhile.....?
Fascinating history of that doublet Bruce, very well preserved piece of clothing from the early 1600's 👍👍
I'm glad this popped up on my homepage because this is exactly the short of history I love! Looks like you've got a new subscriber in me
Wow! That family - whoever they are - must have taken really good care of that outfit! Textiles are very hard to preserve. I'm thinking it was probably given to that retainer for safekeeping. What became of the Stewarts of Urrad around/after the time this clothing was given away? Very interesting video! Thank you so much!!
The detail is amazing! Cant imagine making one let alone three. Had to do a double take with those silk slits😲 Thank you to you and your people for showing us the real deal. You can see how time has colored it. Quite impressive piece!!
Once again another excellent programme set in a place I love to visit 🏴
yaaaaay
Beautiful museum. And another fascinating subject. Thank you again.
I so loved you in "tithe Lost King!"
Aye that was fun
In the Society for Creative Anachronism, we call that Landsknecht style "slashy pouf". 😂 I wonder if he had a poufy undershirt of contrasting color to poke out through all of those slashes?
It's AMAZING to have both the toile and the final garment! Usually the toile gets used as pattern pieces until they disintegrate or get repurposed. Was this one found still stitched up, or brought in in separate pieces? It is fantastic!
I wish we had time in August to get to Perth, but our 16 days are already packed full!
Always enjoy your work u and your team really do a great job thanks for posting
really interesting new series of videos, Bruce! Thank you! You make me want to visit Scotland again/more.
Brilliant
Man, your delivery is great!!
I try
Another absolutely fascinating video. I’m looking forward to a visit to Perth museum soon to see this precious garment. Now to share with my seamstress sister in law and a retired Saville row taylor near Cromlix 💕
Truly awesome! I love this❤
Says, this punk 😘.
I wish I had a time machine. Would love to have seen who actually wore this.
The building you were in here is also beautiful. Thank you so much for another fascinating video.
I'm an American Gen Xer who was a punk girl in the 80's (& a grunge girl in the 90's). I would wear this jacket in a heartbeat! Can I have one in Black Stewart tartan, please? Great video - thank you for sharing this treasured heirloom with us.
I'll get it sorted
Why did he nae come to Edinburgh? Cause he wanted to see his fiefdom that does not get mentioned
Brilliant
great video, thanks a lot.
You are welcome!
That’s a nicely decorated room !
It's bonny
Wow what an outfit ❤
Quality vidya Bruce thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Speaking of Punk rock...met Johnny Lydon aka Mr Rotten at the Ally Pally ( Alexandra palace) , very nice chap ...a real credit to Kilburn...nice post sir....😊😊😊...E...
Happy Birthday 🍺🍰
Excellent video, Bruce. Extremely well written, humorous, and I’m digging that your camera angles include your cameras.
I don’t think Oi Polloi would be caught dead in that outfit thoug
That's so awesome
It is isn't it?
@@ScotlandHistoryTours it's so amazing that garment is still around. I go through a tshirt in 2 years haha
Fascinating as always Bruce. We were in Perth for the first time a couple of weeks ago but that museum still closed. It would have been good to have spotted that garment so we'll keep an eye out next time. We enjoyed Perth BTW. Great beer in the Old Ship and canny bait in Paco's 😊
Oldest pub in the toun
@@ScotlandHistoryTours I didn't realise that, thanks. A great boozer 👍
I knew it... Bruce is one of my lot! 🤘🤪🤘
🤣
Another interesting video Bruce. It's survival is just amazing as it was never in fashion again.
I'll make a point of visiting the museum next time I'm in Perth, last time was probably a school visit from Crieff in the sixties
Brilliant
Whoever wore that looked 100% cool
True
@@ScotlandHistoryTours dude you’re so cool. I love your stuff. Thanks for doing it. Stoked you’re a metal head🤘
Och! Ye naughty wee boy! Hahahaha!😂 So wonderful to see the historical clothes! Created way back when (some) things were made to last! The museums you visit are brilliant! And I have to say, Bruce, your videos are a great way for people like me, who have mobility issues, to plan visits that are suitable to our needs. And while not wanting to sound too crawly-lick-bum, of the several history/travel channels I've subscribed to so far, 3 of the best are Scottish! Aye! 👌🏴🇮🇪🙋🙏
You can be as crawly lick bum as you like🤣
Surely, there wasn't just the ONE 17th century punk rocker in Scotland.
Hell yeah!
👍🏻 i love your videos
My videos love you
Such a nice voice
THank you.
You're welcome!
Bruce!! Hiya! Check out the fashions of the German Landskenecter ,(spelling likely faulty) They were mercenary for the Tudors.
I'm guessing the Swiss army thing is probably a reference to the Landsknechte, I knew something seemed familiar with those slashes across the outfit, though the Landsknechte in germany tended to also have the entire spectrum of the rainbow represented when it came to the colours they wore.
So I'm guessing those german fellas were the medieval glam-rockers?
My Borther you and crew are the best Of Scotland. Bruce your crew work hard to show your love of home. It comes through like a rocket. I look forwrd to freaking you out on your birthday I get to be that spirit you talk to Im I have plans of tickles and giggles You gave me scotland and more than I could images just like this vid.
I'll be honest you're freaking me out now😂
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Dude too soon start freaking wait til the end of August.
A talented friend of mine has just created a toile for a jacket she's making for me. I bought I lovely piece of Harris tweed recently that dates back to the late 60's ( complete with shillings and pennys price tag) It' had the stamp of Newalls that closed around 72.
The tools was created for exactly that reason. Get the cut and fit right before cutting the precious irreplaceable fabric. ( which is nearly as old as me)
Wow
Thanks Bruce once again showing us something I would never normally be thinking of when on z day out. But come the summer I can see myself dragging my 20 something kids to Perth for a day out.
My eldest is wondering about the weave of the silk and what part of the world it's from.
Aye Bruce, don ye be smirkin too much in front of that wee marble fella in the foyer, I hear the real guy could rise to an occasion occasionally...an his owner was right proud of him if he did. Thank you for another masterpiece. I dream of a time when I might visit those impressive halls in Perth. Maybe it will stay a dream, but it willna stop me haven another wee dram.
🤣
We saw the Stone at Westminster Cathedral 21 years ago. I'm glad it's home and being honored, not used as a footstool!
(We also saw a stone with my hub's name on it. We were a wee bit confused, as his father's side is all German!)
It's like a painter of note. He will have students and apprentices, and when he gets a lot of commissions, he will let the better students paint a hand, or the background.
Love watching your videos….you’re such a wag. Cheers from Australia 🦘🙏
😜I'll see you when I'm back touring Oz in 2025
@@ScotlandHistoryTours I’ll definitely make the effort. Try to come to the north, preferably Cairns, as it’s difficult and costly for an old pensioner biddy like me to get to the ‘big cities’ 😂😂😂
When the copy was made, they must have been amazed at the full effect the cuts created, on new material. Would love to know who first thought of this, and convinced the customer to ‘Punk’ their expensive garment.
It would come slashed. It was part of the design. The slashes are perfectly spaced. The edges would have been secured with fish glue.
The fashion started in Switzerland and Germany by the mercenaries. But they would have used contrasting colours.
Good vid,Bruce, never envisaged you as a 'fashionista' 😂: Stewart of Urrard, believed to be cadets of Fincastle, cadets of Fothergill & Garth(incl. the well-known historian David Stewart of Garth),who were lineal (but illeg.) descendants of the notorious Prince Alexander Stewart,Earl of Buchan 'the Wolf of Badenoch' [a good future vid subject,if you have not done already, when you tour 'that neck of the woods' or possibly Elgin!]🙄
👍🏻yeah dude, the playing chess with the devil story 🚬🤠
Another good video Bruce,is it true that the Jacobite’s gave the people of Newcastle their famous nickname?
Oooh, I don't know
I'm always amazed that clothing can be saved for so many centuries. I think slashed new jeans is stupid. Maybe since as a young person we didn't have much money and had to wear torn clothes. Wonder if people of my (lack of) class back then would have thought the same.
Why you call it punk? You explain some, Landsknecht wore slash puff style.
I thought that all those portraits of Kraut aristocrats in tattered suits were memorial artworks after they'd been served "a whiff of grapeshot"!! 🤔🙄😁
Slashy-pouf! 😂
Still, I couldn't imagine the hours of work in that piece. What a find!
A'reyt Bruce. Suits you sir? Copies available via the channel shopping page?
😜
You and the statue was funny I know what you were thinking 😂😂
😜
I want to be a 17th century punk rocker but my mammy wilnae let me 🎵🎵
🤣
I’m going to open my stash to splash my cash on a doublet of slash 😊
😜
Oh wow, finally something important to come out of Scotland other than Sheena Easton.
🤔
💚
Interesting,no chain or spikes so they did wear the chains? Like the punks wore back in the 70/80's or strange hair color. Now it's normal. Did they stay or did they go? Haste ye back soon Bruce.
Is this something to wear over armour?
The metal would shine through the slits
Wait, you're a comedian, a science/maths teacher, a semi-pro rugby player, an historian, AND a metalhead?! Dude! I gotta get to Scotland just to meet you...
I've failed at a lot of shit
Bruh, I don't believe you. I think they call that being a renaissance man or polymath.@@ScotlandHistoryTours
🤘🤠💜
It’s very flashy, slashy pouf if you ask me;).
Sìomón Ferocious and the Carnal Flintlocks?
The thumbnail needs to be on a tee shirt Bruce!
Now that's a point

Bet they'd sell!!
Buying you a ☕️😊can you make more videos of William Wallace or robert the bruce?
Big thanks. You're going to love tomorrow
@@ScotlandHistoryTours a new video tomorrow?

You raise the age-old question: which is better, punk or metal? Obviously the answer is punk.
😂 There's no accounting for taste
Musically I'd say metal, but when it comes to integrity and values and symbolising rebellion against the status quo etc. I'd have to say (hardcore) punk.
I think slashed dublets have more in common with lace making or surface embroidery than punk. Punk is a diy ethic, aristocratic clothing really isn’t.
Oh aye, there ye go, a marble boabbie daddy'o 😂
😜
Nice swagger. I wish i could swagger past that statue, unfortunately...
Trust me the swagger was director's instructions
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Ha!
Punk/pinked... not far off!
Hey thanks for the camera camera shot. Bloody nice. Bruce first of all you should have said Not laugh this is punk ear. we just got to full outfit Im laughing to tuesday . But it is great very well made. Bruce I dont need you to tell me what this Muesum Smell like. It smells of home. Still SF born But That smells of home, from the wet streets. And You heard me, I talk to you in my dreams. Right now I need to thank you, I have been overly worried Half My countrymen are pcy no heart no soul lies about god and twisted it
The royal burgh was Renfrew.. not Glasgow
Glad you got something out of the bideo😜
Reminds me of Bowie's outfit in the video for Ashes to Ashes. A fashion he copied by the people who copied him. How ironic, but that was Bowie, a copycat who influenced endless copycats.
I kent I should'na have chucked my 70s duds oot.
🤣
I couldn’t understand your brogue @ 8:40… chances are ya ain’t speaking my ‘Merican?? Punk indeed. Punk or mod tho was my 1st ?
Low reply to my own comment but… obviously punk drew me in quicker… does that defeat the purpose. Cheers, brother!
Whit!? Nae name tag? He wisnae feart of a mix up at the dry cleaners, wis he?
Very interesting, Bruce. I am a docent in our State Museum of Art and Culture and I would be shooing you away from this display. As clean as your hands are, you are depositing oils on that garment and, in that sense, damaging it. Imagine if every visitor to the museum worked the buttons and touched the fabric. tut tut. Mustn't do that!
Everything I did was pre approved. The one I touched wasn't the real thing
I like how the wealthy would keep and remodel and recycle their garments. The craftsmanship was appreciated and treasured. So different to today's throwaway mentality.
True
More glam rock than punk I think...
Possibly
Like a shaggy dog story with no punch line. No punks, just clickbait.
Yeah that ain't punk clothes
I thikn we know that😂
