  • Time to see what kind of mpg we can get on a longer trip. Watch until the end to see what we get. Better than I thought.

    31 mpg is awesome for a heavy SUV like the Touareg. Most mid size gas SUV's average 17 - 20 mpg highway or less. Diesel fuel is on average 10% more expensive per gallon than gas, but when you're getting over 80% better gas mileage, you don't have to be a brain surgeon to realize that diesel power makes sense!

    • @spottedeuros1529

      Defiantly! Most of the time my other cars require premium gas which is typically the same price as diesel.

    Nice video again mate,well the 32 mpg is very very good :D kinda impressive to be honest.Touareg is 2396kg if you don't carry or don't tow anything then everything gets heavier and takes more fuel anyways,but other than that its very good.Love the video 👍🏻

    Great video and I even enjoy the relaxing music! Was it frustrating only doing 65? I'm curious as to the MPG on "keeping up with traffic." (Laughing at forgetting the gas cap!)

    • @spottedeuros1529
      @spottedeuros1529  4 года назад +2

      I don't mind driving 65. Rather save some money and most of the time it's more relaxing since you don't have to worry about passing anyone. haha Don't even need to hit the brakes. However I did think on this trip I was causing problems with traffic. Everyone had to go around me. Even the semi trucks. Speed limit is 80mph on this road and people do 85-90 most of the time.

    I have driven that route. It is slightly downhill dropping into the valley (driving north), and with that cloudy weather, I would expect a prevailing wind out of the south (tailwind). So, just a bit of exaggeration.

    Excellent! Will be taking our recently acquired 2009 Touareg TDI on a longer road trip in a few weeks time so will be interested to see how it does. Do you ever use any of the diesel fuel additives to increase fuel lubricity (eg Stanadyne, Opti-Lube XPD)?

    • @spottedeuros1529
      @spottedeuros1529  4 года назад +1

      Nice! Let us know how it goes. I haven't used any additives. Snake oil in my opinion but I haven't really given them a chance.

  • @jonnyg44
    @jonnyg44 4 года назад

    That's great mileage but I'd recommend either a Chevy Colorado with a diesel or the half ton Silverado with the diesel rated at better mileage and cheaper to fix. Old Volkswagen will drive anyone broke. Even doing the work yourself a lot of times you need special tools. But if you find one cheap enough it could be worth it.

    • @spottedeuros1529
      @spottedeuros1529  4 года назад

      Cost a lot more to get into one of those. Doesn’t make much sense buying a newer car to save a little bit more on fuel.

    • @jonnyg44
      @jonnyg44 4 года назад +1

      @@spottedeuros1529 $40k to $15k you're right, but you have to think of service cost. Seen too many people waste too much money on vehicles they thought they could initially afford(me being one) I thought I got a great deal on one not realizing maintenance costs were insane. Every time I went to fix something I was buying special tools and parts were double sometimes triple what another car brand part would cost.

    Well Josh, I really wanted to buy a Touareg. I watched all your videos and all the TFL videos, and I read all the ClubTOuareg and VWVortex forum threads and I test drove 5 different models from 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2012, and money was no object (looking for right car at reasonable price)...
    I couldn't pull the trigger. The constant threat of costly repairs and maintenance and downtime was not inspiring. Touareg was attractive as a "do everything" vehicle, but terrifying as a "reliable" vehicle.
    Also, I questioned the LEGALITY of your towing set-up. GCWR of the Touareg is not sufficient for a tow load greater than about 6500 lbs- nowhere close to 7700 lbs.

    • @spottedeuros1529
      @spottedeuros1529  4 года назад +1

      I have only had great experiences with Touaregs. I have owned a 2004 V6, 2005 V8 and now a 2009 Tdi. The Tdi is by far my favorite. German SUVs carry a bad stereotype thanks to BMW, Mercedes and Range Rover. The Touareg is a lot simpler and doesn't nearly have as many common issues as some of the other German SUVs.
      You can tell by my videos that I am a fan of Touaregs. They have always been great to me.

    • @hamyncheese

      @@spottedeuros1529 Yes, you're videos are fantastic! I've owned 3 VW's - 99 Passat 1.8L Turbo 4cyl 5-speed manual (great fun to drive), 2012 Jetta 5-cyl (5-sp manual but overall boring), and a 2002 Eurovan 2.8L VR6 (beaten up, bought cheap, hauls stuff, trans failing, but love it!). I'm totally in the game for VW! I would be thrilled to own a 2010 TDI with air, but I got nervous on the only one near me in the last 3 months for 14,500 with 135k miles.
      Touareg - short overhang. Hitch is close to axle for improved stability
      As for towing capacity, here are the numbers I have found:
      GVWR = 6305
      GCWR = 14021
      Curb weight approx = 5300
      Max Tow = 7716
      Max tongue = 616

    Do you know if the " emissions fix" has been done to your Touareg? (Would have a label from the dealer under the hood.) Also, how much DEF do you go through since you tow quite a bit with yours?

    • @spottedeuros1529
      @spottedeuros1529  4 года назад

      Yes, it was done right before i bought the car. I haven't tracked the DEF consumption that closely. I wish you could see the range all the time not just when it's low. I think i can get about 5-7,000 miles on a def tank. seems to use more in the summer time. Not sure.

    • @VWRalf
      @VWRalf 4 года назад

      First gen "fix" must be better than 2nd gen then. Last summer I was towing my enclosed trailer with my '13 TDI to Colorado and after only about 700 miles it said I had 1000 miles left of DEF. 30 miles later, it said 600 miles left. This was with a topped off tank at the beginning of the trip. There's an update available for my Touareg, so hopefully DEF usage goes down after the update.

    • @warreng1200
      @warreng1200 4 года назад

      @@VWRalf there have been many forum posts about Def consumption during towing with touareg owners stating they get about 50% less distance out of their Def tank. It makes sense if you think about the constant load being put on the engine. I would advise keeping a spare gallon with you if towing 👌

    • @VWRalf
      @VWRalf 4 года назад +1

      @@warreng1200 Yeah, I've read those posts too. I got this Touareg after the fix was already done, so I have no reference as to how it was beforehand. Would have figured it would at least do the 1000 mile round trip on a full DEF tank. Good thing its only $10.70 for the 2.5 gal jug at the dealer. I'll definitely start carrying another jug with me.
