That's an interesting thought. I think it's very terrain dependent. I agree with you on trails that the raised heel gets in the way while going downhill. However, as pnw boots were actually made for logging and as someone who goes off trail, the raised heel is an advantage in looser duff and screw when descending where you can actually dig it in. Almost like kicking steps in snow. For trail hiking though, less drop all the way.
I feel like the fiber board is very durable. I’ve got the standard African Rangers in Houston Brown. Been wearing them every single day for 10 1/2 months. shoveled snow in them, and then wore them with shorts all summer. Yardwork to grocery store. I have put them through hell and they still feel/look great. I am in and out of customers houses, so I like that they don’t tend to carry rocks. Looking forward to the Numzaam tire wedge bronco boots I ordered for this winter!
Personally I'd like to see a couple other sole options for the zero drop boots. Maybe a luggy sole with deep relief cuts to maintain flexibility and a "wedge" sole that's zero drop for extra comfort on concrete and hard surfaces

With the AR8 available from the custom shop with any leather, lining, lacing and the barefoot last and sole the Rugged Trooper seems to be a bit of an orphan. My last two pairs of custom AR8's have been built on the zero-drop barefoot last.
Just no lol, not to be rude but have you even watched this video? The trooper has completely redesigned and tweaked everything about the upper. What you’re saying just ain’t true
I would love to maybe customize a pair of rugged African troopers. I absolutely love this look and the specs. Jim green is definitely knocking it hit of the ball park.
I ordered two days ago a pair of Rugged in brown, was going to order a custom pair of AR8 with a veg tan leather midsole rather than polyester lasting board but then they came out with the Rugged that has TWO slabs of leather underfoot and a wide last that I love from my barefoot rangers. Maybe would have preferred all full grain leather but going to wax anyway. Only downside here in Europe delivery only from March onwards. Ciao from Italy😊
You can't go wrong with any pair of Jim Greens! I own a pair of each the African Rangers, Numzaan, and Turbo Vellie. I only wear JG boots now! Customer service is superb! Boot quality too! I hope to add a pair of Meanders in future. If I wasn't set on the Meander, I would highly consider a rugged trooper.
I have the OG AR8, it’s probably my most worn boot out of my collection. And I just ordered a pair of black and brown RATs. Would love to see some kilties from Jim Green in the matching leathers. Would be a win-win situation since you could use smaller leather offcuts for kiltie production
I’m expecting my Barefoot African Trooper to arrive to Ireland in December and that’s it for my boot buying. But then you launched the Rugged African Trooper and I just had to get a pair of them, shame that I have to wait until March to get them. But that’s it. No more boots……
I'd definitely be willing to sacrifice some flexibility and ground feel in a barefoot boot for more aggressive lugged tread. That's something I've been looking for for hunting here in the mountains of the Western U.S.
What about steel toe?? I bought the barefoot trooper in the fall. I would buy this rugged trooper version today, except I need steel toe for work. Thanks for putting out such great comfortable products
IIRC Jim Green has to submit any boot that is advertised as safety-rated footwear to some kind of independent testing before they can put it into full-scale production. However, if you order a one-off custom version with a steel or composite toe cap, then it's on you as the "designer" to be sure that your custom-ordered boots meet whatever standard your profession requires, and not Jim Green's responsibility...
Aweh, I've been following Rose Anvil for a while and learned nearly everything I know about shoes from him, but could not find anything PNW-styled around Durbs back then, since that aesthetic really got me somehow. Do you guys have a blog or something where you share how your leather is sourced? I know SA has a healthy cattle industry, never mind the exotic game, so that would be a good starting point, but does the tannin have to be imported for that? Since it seems we prefer to export our own....
What are your concerns? Other than the custom shop not taking orders till February I rarely buy off-the-rack JG's. The custom boots don't cost that much more and can be had MUCH more to my liking than the OTR boots.
Just anxious for delivery I suppose. I preordered some months ago and their site says BOOTS WILL BE DELIVERED BY NOVEMBER 2024. We're halfway thru November with no update. I was hoping they would be on display in this vid or get mentioned. There's still time I know, but still. Edit: they have sent an update and they are on their way so good news.

I just ordered some custom AR8s at the end of October so unfortunately i should wait on this... hopefully this sticks around as more than just a one off run
I received my pair of barefoot African troopers just over a month ago and I love them. It took about 5 days to break them 80% of the way in. I plan to get another pair when I have the financial means again.
@sauldiaz_ They definitely run true to size so I would go a half-size up if you're worried about sizing. I got mine true to size at 9.5 US and those 5 days were just getting the boot used to my feet and socks.
Love the rugged trooper, unfortunately they wouldn’t be an option to work in without a safety/steel toe option. Many construction/trades jobs require safety toes. Any chance of getting something like this in the future? That would genuinely be the perfect work boot!
I want to try the bare foot boots but im scared. I tore some stuff in my left foot and its been jacked up since. Thorogood wedge soles are about the only boot I can wear all day.
Are these boots around to stay, or are they a limited run. Also, I would love to see a composite toe version. it would be amazing for working in warehouses and construction workers. (Anyone moving heavy load manually would benefit)
Good day @benjammin8510, thank you for your continued support. Please use the link below to order the Barefoot Stockman boot, which is available in three colours - Black, Brown, and Fudge however this is only available through the US webstore. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions or require additional information. We are always happy to assist in getting the correct pair of Jim Green boots in your hands and on your feet.
My job consists of walking on flat hard concrete and walking up & down flat concrete stairs all day. Would the barefoot boots be more comfortable, or would an option with a steel shank make them more comfortable?
From what I've heard, a wedge sole is better for that environment with padded insoles, at least from my experience. If you get barefoot boots and try that, bring some regular comfortable shoes with you and switch back to those if you notice chronic aching in your feet. If you try to power through it for too long you can get nerve damage in your feet and toes.
Where can I buy Jim Green products in Cape Town? I am here for a vacation and can’t seem to find one. Hoping to buy one fitted personally as online may be of wrong size or ill fit. Got some SA vellies already but hoping to get JG
@@nathanielyoungman4454 Thanks, you have all three? Sons of Sever have tested tons of barefoot shoes and have found this model comparatively narrow, particularly by the little toe.
I spend £100 per year on the cheapest boots where a friend spends the equivalent on designer boots of quality.... its a no brainer but I've never honestly thought too deeply ill get whatever is on sale getting my feet shredded until something breaks, its usually the soles separating I discover when my feet start getting wet. You can expect an order from me in the new year 🏴

Man I think you just sold me on the rugged. This will be the first non usa boot I have purchased in 15 years but I think it’s going to be the ultimate hiking boot. Hoping it would be delivered before my hiking trip in December but I’m willing to risk it.
@ Mine says boots will be delivered in December. Maybe it’s something regional? I wear boots all day at work so I’d use them broken in fairly quickly though a weeks worth of working.
1st I got the Vellie. 2nd the African Ranger. 3rd the Barefoot African Ranger. For my 4th pair, I'd like to be able to buy a pair of Rugged African Troopers in a 6" height! (Hint, hint)
I am ordering my first pair of AR8's tonight. I have 2 pairs of Rangers that are broken in nicely. I prefer the lighter weight poly used in the AR8's. Leave the baby cows alone.
New to your brand and my first impression is great based on the design and premium quality. Would love to see you offer soft and smooth material on the inner heel counter though. Suede leather is too rough on my skin, like superglue when my heel is rubbing. I always get blisters.
@@RagnarHoff I couldn’t say for certain that it would fix your issue, but everyone who puts their feet through the wringer will tell you that good, wool socks make a big difference. I personally wear darn tough, as they are based in the US near me, and have a lifetime guarantee. Might be worth a shot to try a pair. Other than sock choice, the two other explanations I can think of are an improperly sized or laced boot, or the possibility that your ankles might just be too small for the last they use. Both of which would cause excessive heel slip, resulting in blisters.
Styling wise I really like the Rugged Trooper, the changes in the side panels are subtle but I like them a lot. What I don't like is that they're even taller than the AR8, I need these boots in a shorter height, more along the lines of a Red Wing Iron Ranger or their Moc Toe 875. I want the styling and rugged build but I'm not in an environment that requires that much height up my ankles and it's just excess weight for me.
You can always take a knife to em, I guess. But if you want a rugged boot that looks like an iron ranger, why not just buy an iron ranger? They're solid boots.
I want to do a custom pair of AR8 but i wanna make sure I'm not asking too much. I really want to add a suade internal heel counter as well as an external toe cap. Would that be possible?
What is the width difference between the barefoot and STC last? I have the barefoot AR’s and they fit great but I’m worried the STC last will be too narrow for me
@ Oh that’s very helpful! There is very little difference between those widths anyhow so both would work for me. I will probably end up getting these rugged troopers as daily boots and build a custom ARs when the composite toe drops. Would make a good back up to my JKs
@ek-nz one of the reasons that I have two pairs of custom AR8's and another on the way is that I hate speed hooks. Conventional lace holes all the way for me!
It’s not really nubuck it lightly buffed full grain I just watched another channel examine the leather fiber structure and under the microscope it’s almost entirely there you can see a very light buff on the surface regular nubuck is much more degraded than that
I have five pairs of Jim Green boots so perhaps I can add some points. - The Anvil sole is not durable but is comfortable - The standard AR sole is also not very durable: it wears down quite fast - The AR8 is a great boot, not too clumpy or heavy and very durable all around, but I would prefer it to be snugger in the ankle and above - Both the nubuck and standard leathers are very nice (I have Houston brown, fudge, standard brown and standard black) - I would prefer all JG boots to be snugger/narrower in the heel and mid foot, and I appreciate the toe shape/width of all my JG boots - An AR8 in size 7 is a much roomier boot than a Stockman in size 7 (I probably should have got women’s Stockman because the ankles are too loose) - My partner is really hard on boots so I got him the standard AR in black: they’re doing a lot better than his Magnums did but he is wearing through the soles pretty fast (honestly I don’t know how he could destroy boots this fast with his job as a technician!) The boots I have are BFARx2, standard AR (his), AR8, Stockman. Happy to answer questions and help fellow JG fans. Am thinking of getting the BF Trooper next, in Houston black. Yes I have a boot problem.
I like my Barefoot African Troopers, but I don't wear them as often as my custom Baobabs, custom Stockman's, Razorbacks with Oringo Sole, Steel Toe Razorbacks, African Rangers, or Barefoot African Rangers. I can't figure out whether to tuck my pants into the tall African Troopers or cover them up with the pant legs.😂
I like the AR8 better. It seems more rugged where it matters. The "rugged" version is more "American Style", more for posers, guys that only hang out in the Mall and never actually work with their hands.
My opinion for what it's worth. Your boots are only missing 1 thing. The speedlace system present in modern military boots. I can't stand hooks . They catch on everything. The modern loops with the kevlar strings is a superior system in my opinion..
Can’t stand speed lacing, as you say they snag on everything, including the other boot! The two pairs of boots that I have that came with them I immediately switched out to regular eyelets as I’m never in much of a hurry.
@@ek-nz No, talking about speed hooks, something all three of these models have. It’s in the name, and it indicates an open side which allows you to quickly wrap previously tied laces around them. For me they’re deadly, almost threw me off a two story roof many years ago when one boot lace snagged a hook on the other boot.
In public safety, we need the safety toe, full grain leather, A high shine toe cap, and a side zipper for donning and doffing. Not one agency specs barefoot,😂😂😂😂
I hope this is a long-term collaboration, and not a one off. While I would love a pair, I just can't justify buying something like this for myself going into the holidays.

If you try to power through it for too long you can get nerve damage in your feet and toes.
I’ve preordered a pair of Rugged Troopers (U.K. preorder drop is March) - the wait is going to kill me lol.
Where can I buy Jim Green products in Cape Town? I am here for a vacation and can’t seem to find one. Hoping to buy one fitted personally as online may be of wrong size or ill fit. Got some SA vellies already but hoping to get JG
Excellent, thanks! Which of these 3 boots will have the widest interior forefoot space, especially on the outer, little toe side?
Barefoot African
@@nathanielyoungman4454 Thanks, you have all three? Sons of Sever have tested tons of barefoot shoes and have found this model comparatively narrow, particularly by the little toe.
I will pick a leather midsole over poly-woven every time. The cost and weight are negligible to me. Never skip leg day! 😂
You can expect an order from me in the new year 🏴
We hear you loud and clear @BrandonSullivan309 It is easy to fall into the trap of grabbing the cheapest boots especially when they seem to do the job but wet feet from broken soles are no fun, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. We are always happy to assist in getting the correct pair of Jim Green boots in your hands and on your feet.
Man I think you just sold me on the rugged. This will be the first non usa boot I have purchased in 15 years but I think it’s going to be the ultimate hiking boot. Hoping it would be delivered before my hiking trip in December but I’m willing to risk it.
March delivery..
Also, hiking in these without at least a few weeks break in is gonna be hella rough.
@ Mine says boots will be delivered in December. Maybe it’s something regional? I wear boots all day at work so I’d use them broken in fairly quickly though a weeks worth of working.
@@ChavsADV you musta got into the first wave in the US so.
When I first saw the Rugged African Trooper, I was so confused 😅😅whether is a Barefoot with a rugged sole or AR8
I can’t wait for my Rugged.
Is this a long-term collaboration? Please don't let this be a one-off since all of these boots look great
I ik kijk atijd filmpies met biertie bij . But this was a very inormative clip ,I stil need to go to dusseldpf to fit one
Looks like I didn't win the moccasins. cool boots folks. Where do I get that cool anti-poaching shirt?
Need this but with a toecap 😮💨
New to your brand and my first impression is great based on the design and premium quality. Would love to see you offer soft and smooth material on the inner heel counter though. Suede leather is too rough on my skin, like superglue when my heel is rubbing. I always get blisters.
What socks do you normally wear?
@@ZSmith-yy4lv What's the secret? I wear ankle height cotton socks so my skin doesn't rub against the leather if that's what you mean.
@@Arto257with how these boots are constructed, simply cutting off the extra height with a knife I think would be a terrible idea
Have you thought about getting the Jim Green 719?
I want to do a custom pair of AR8 but i wanna make sure I'm not asking too much. I really want to add a suade internal heel counter as well as an external toe cap. Would that be possible?
2:23. The only difference here, to the naked eye...... 😂😂😂😂😂😂. The price. The boots are grossly inflated to pay off Weston Kay.
Nice,but I want your short sleeves. 😁😁
by this time next year jim green should have their $350 work boot
What is the width difference between the barefoot and STC last? I have the barefoot AR’s and they fit great but I’m worried the STC last will be too narrow for me
This is the one thing I’m hung up on. I’m. EEE so I like a wider toe.
They have the barefoot and JG last listed as EEE and the stc last listed as EE on the custom order site.
@ Oh that’s very helpful! There is very little difference between those widths anyhow so both would work for me. I will probably end up getting these rugged troopers as daily boots and build a custom ARs when the composite toe drops. Would make a good back up to my JKs
Since Mr. Crouch mentioned law enforcement, I'll chime in. Not one agency that I know of issues or authorizes a nubuck, suede, or barefoot boot.
Go for the AR8 then. I wear mine with uniform. I just wish the eyelets were black.
@ek-nz one of the reasons that I have two pairs of custom AR8's and another on the way is that I hate speed hooks. Conventional lace holes all the way for me!
@@ek-nz Your agency doesn't issue footwear as part of the uniform?
@@dbmail545 Allows you to lace in boot zippers.
It’s not really nubuck it lightly buffed full grain I just watched another channel examine the leather fiber structure and under the microscope it’s almost entirely there you can see a very light buff on the surface regular nubuck is much more degraded than that
10 mm of leather - bombproof baby! Maybe you should name them the JG Rhino Troopers!
My Numzaan's is my version of African PNW
I have five pairs of Jim Green boots so perhaps I can add some points.
- The Anvil sole is not durable but is comfortable
- The standard AR sole is also not very durable: it wears down quite fast
- The AR8 is a great boot, not too clumpy or heavy and very durable all around, but I would prefer it to be snugger in the ankle and above
- Both the nubuck and standard leathers are very nice (I have Houston brown, fudge, standard brown and standard black)
- I would prefer all JG boots to be snugger/narrower in the heel and mid foot, and I appreciate the toe shape/width of all my JG boots
- An AR8 in size 7 is a much roomier boot than a Stockman in size 7 (I probably should have got women’s Stockman because the ankles are too loose)
- My partner is really hard on boots so I got him the standard AR in black: they’re doing a lot better than his Magnums did but he is wearing through the soles pretty fast (honestly I don’t know how he could destroy boots this fast with his job as a technician!)
The boots I have are BFARx2, standard AR (his), AR8, Stockman. Happy to answer questions and help fellow JG fans.
Am thinking of getting the BF Trooper next, in Houston black. Yes I have a boot problem.
😂 Me too! Waiting on pairs #7 and #8 ATM
Wear the troopers in short shorts 🩳 new trend
Depends on the situation. Wet, tall grass=trousers bloused into the boot. Sand, rock, pavement=trousers outside the boot.
@@HM1-d4d I'm in North Florida and wear boots with shorts 8 months of the year.
You have too many boots...
(I'm just jealous 😅)
Put boots on African Rangers' feet. Yes. Put money in Weston Kay's pocket. No.😂😂😂😂😂😂
African Rangers do 5-15 miles a day! They gotta be in some of the best shape out of most occupations.
All 3 look great, but I got thiccc calves, so 8in boots aren’t for me.
@88sstraight lol I am a Floridian .Try castnetting in a pair of boots with hooks.
By speed lacing do you mean D-ring type eyelets? Their original Razorback boots have those, so JG’s got you covered there.
