Great tutorial! I recently joined my school's chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota and I everyone makes their letter shirts by hand which I didn't know how to since I thought they bought them. They taught me how to do the stencils and heat and bond, but they didn't explain how to sew it down, so your video is helpful. I only sewed down the inner letters but I'll go back and do the outer letters too
Love and Roses! My chapter also makes all our letters like this. It's one of my favorite traditions. Congratulations, I hope you've enjoyed being a sister so far!
Perfect!! I’m making a tshirt quilt but I only just got in to my sorority and I don’t have any shirts yet! I’m going to use this tutorial to make “shirts” to put into my quilt! Go Greek!
My boyfriend and I both joined Band organizations/fraternities. We joined separate organizations though, but both were coed and I hate spending so much money on letters! I found some fun fabric that he would love and I want to make him some custom PBr letters and I wanted to make some KKPsi letters for myself
MARIAH JEAN I can definitely do that! I actually have an etsy shop already! I would love to put up a listing for greek letter shirts! Check out the link in the description!
Jessica Lewis I actually made them! I just googled "sigma greek letter stencil" and printed that out to the size I wanted then picked up some stencil plastic material from the craft store and cut them out from there so I could reuse them all the time! If you don't want to do that I suggest just photocopying a pair of letters you already have and using those as your stencils!
My daughter is a Sigma Kappa too - and she was talking about how she wants to get these - I will surprise her for Christmas! What size are the stencils?
In another comment she said she just used regular cotton. I was wondering the same thing. I’m guessing that the heat bond helps keep the fabric from fraying
ThatSoTara I just use the latest version of iMovie! If I want to learn to do something I just google it! I'll definitely make a "How I Edit My Videos" soon!
This is a great tutorial. Very helpful, I am interested in printing letters off but I am curious as to the difference in sizes of your large vs. small letters. For example, are your large letters like 5 inches and the smaller ones 4.5 inches. I'm just not sure as to the perfect size to print them off for the applique. Thanks!!
I'm not sure I can give a specific measurement of size differences, but if you have a lettered shirt already made that you've purchased it is very easy to make stencils from this. All you have to do is place your shirt on a copy machine and print out two copies of the letters. Then cut out the outline of the smaller (inner) letter on one sheet and then cut out the larger (outer) letters on the second print out. Then you can use this as a template for your letters.... if you do not have already made letters, I would suggest printing the smaller letter first, cutting it out, then placing it on another piece of paper and draw an outline around it as far as you think is good visually. I have noticed the lack of greek letter stencils on the internet and plan to make a set of printable greek letter stencils in the near future for download!
That would be so perfect and I would forever be grateful because unfortunately I haven't purchased any greek letter shirts and you're right! Finding the alphabet is near impossible! Do you have a pinterest account? I look forward to the printable letter stencil!
Super cute! I am going ot make some stuff for my daughter. What size are your letters? I know this video is rather old and you are probably married with kids now. lol But if you happen to get this, I would love to hear from you.
Not married with kids! but yes it's a few years old by now! lol - these are approximately 3 inches wide. You can purchase the stencils on my etsy shop here: www.etsy.com/listing/609223673/greek-letter-printable-stencils?click_key=64847d13a96fd112f7b4a88db6f7f2853c96e51b%3A609223673&click_sum=26005acb&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=greek+letter+stencils&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&organic_search_click=1
hi! I know this is an old post, but I was just watching this because I am interested in making my own letter shirts as well but I was just curious as to if you need a license to make shirts like these. Thanks!
I made them by printing out greek letters from google images and tracing them onto stencil plastic that you can find at most craft stores! An alternative is to photocopy an old letter t-shirt and cut those out!
I actually made them myself! I googled images of Greek letters and printed them to the size I wanted and cut them out of plastic that is meant to make stencils ! I'll do some research and see if I can find some online for you to buy!
Yes! I have! I've made a bunch of things this way. I did it on a sweater, on a bag, on sweatshirts, on a blanket...it can really be done anything!!! :D Glad I could help!
I know this video is old but I did everything from the video bought the same heat bond and when it got to sewing the thread kept popping and machine would get stuck! My machine worked perfectly fine before but it didn’t for my letters! Anyone have the same problem or solution! 😭
LISK! 💞 I know what you mean! They're not super thick like traditional letters you purchase, but they are still thick and have a stiff-ness to them from the heat & bond!
ok i'm gonna be that person to say it.. it's important to mirror the letters when you stencil them.. not upside down, that's gonna create a different kind of f*&$ery. Good work though!
+'Αννα Σ' The origin of Greek letters used for organizations comes from John Heath, a US politician, who started a Greek Letter society in protest of being rejected from several Latin letter societies first. This was The Phi Beta Kappa Society. The lettering system is used to distinguish between chapters, and often has a meaning behind them!
At my school, it's tradition to make at least one set of letters by hand with your Big, and this is exactly how we do it!
ScathachWarrior that's a really cute tradition!
ScathachWarrior Wow. Nice. I will start that with my chapter.
We do that too but none of us know what we are doing and they always turn out really shitty
Haha I was in my sorority about 5 minutes before I realized I didn't want to pay a ton for a letter shirt
Great tutorial! I recently joined my school's chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota and I everyone makes their letter shirts by hand which I didn't know how to since I thought they bought them. Nice work and instruction, especially on sewing the turns/corners. Much appreciated. I may try this.

You should consider opening an Etsy shop! I would totally buy shirts from you!
MARIAH JEAN I can definitely do that! I actually have an etsy shop already! I would love to put up a listing for greek letter shirts! Check out the link in the description!

Wow your editing is awesome!
Dina designs Thanks so much!

OMG! I was looking for a video like this and to find out that you're a sigma kappa too! So great!

This was really helpful. Thanks for sharing!
I loved this! :D
Katherine Elizabeth Thanks!!
My daughter is a Sigma Kappa too - and she was talking about how she wants to get these - I will surprise her for Christmas! What size are the stencils?
Where did you get the fabric? I always have trouble finding good quality fabric that won’t fray easily, and the fabric you used looks great.
In another comment she said she just used regular cotton. I was wondering the same thing. I’m guessing that the heat bond helps keep the fabric from fraying
one heart one way 💜
Thank you. The expense is why I do not have a lot of Greek wear.
Great video! I have a question, how many shirts are you able to make with one pack of the Heat'n Bond?
How did you keep heat n bond from gumming up your needle? Making a mess on thread and breaking.
Aw yay I found a ΣΚ sister!! SLAM ❤️
LISK! 💜❤️
What do you use to edit? You should do a How I Edit My Videos vid!
ThatSoTara I just use the latest version of iMovie! If I want to learn to do something I just google it! I'll definitely make a "How I Edit My Videos" soon!

So proud of my fellow Sigma Kay! LISK
+Tiffany Nguyen SLAM!
after you iron on the letters to the shorts do you have to sew them on, or will they stay?
Hi I'm trying to make some letters! I'm confused on tension! What is yours set to????
hi! I know this is an old post, but I was just watching this because I am interested in making my own letter shirts as well but I was just curious as to if you need a license to make shirts like these. Thanks!
+Cassandra Przyhocki I don't think you need a license to make them but you might if you plan on selling them!
Great video! Thank you for making it!
So cool, thanks!
hi if you don't mind what do you use to edit your videos? ps i really liked this diy!
Lala La Thanks so much! I just use the newest version of iMovie!
Thank you!!!! ❤
Where did you purchase your greek stencils from?
I made them by printing out greek letters from google images and tracing them onto stencil plastic that you can find at most craft stores! An alternative is to photocopy an old letter t-shirt and cut those out!
Great video!
very creative and good editing!! :)
Thanks so much!
Hey! I'm wondering where you got the stencils from? I can't seem to find any! Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places haha
I actually made them myself! I googled images of Greek letters and printed them to the size I wanted and cut them out of plastic that is meant to make stencils ! I'll do some research and see if I can find some online for you to buy!
Thank you so much, that is extremely nice of you. I appreciate the help!
+Nikki Russell I found a bunch on etsy!
Can I make these without the heat and bond as long as I still sew it?
thank you!! SLAM
Go Sig Kap!
Editing on point! What software and camera do you use? Oh and of course, I also like those letters too :)
Asia Brown Thanks girl! I just use the latest version of iMovie and my camera is the Canon Rebel T3i!
DaynnnsDIY Haha clearly I need a MacBook in my life! And that is the same camera I'm going to be using in my next new videos! I'm real excited.
What type of sewing machine are you using?
Hello i know this is an old old post but what machine are you using in this video????
can you handle sew the letters if you don't have a sewing machine? or will it be too stiff?
You can! It may take a little longer though!
Omg! Life saver!!!
what did you have your tension at ?
Where did you purchase the v neck shirt?
where did you find the greek letter stencils?
what kind of sewing machine do you have?
Thank you sister! #oneheartoneway
This is so helpful, especially since I'm in Sigma Kappa as well! #DoveLove
Briana Zwolinski Thanks! Glad I could help! LISK! :)
ΣΚ awesome video ❤️
What size is your stitch for these letters??
+BreeezySmiles It should say it in the video at 5:25 !
Where did you find the stencils to do this with?
I sell them on my etsy shop -- check the link in the bio!
What kind of fabric did you use for the back fabric?
+Taylor Haneline I just used regular cotton fabric! The heat and bond layered on both fabrics makes it stiff like letters you would buy!
+DaynnnsDIY Seriously so glad I found this video! No more buying blocks everrrrr. Have you tried making a bag this way?
Yes! I have! I've made a bunch of things this way. I did it on a sweater, on a bag, on sweatshirts, on a blanket...it can really be done anything!!! :D Glad I could help!
LISK ♥️🕊
What are your stencils made out of?
they're made out of plastic! They sell stencil plastic at craft stores and I cut them out so they would last longer than paper!
I am from greece
I'm a sigma k too! :)
+Jaclyn Lewis OMG LISK!!!
I know this video is old but I did everything from the video bought the same heat bond and when it got to sewing the thread kept popping and machine would get stuck! My machine worked perfectly fine before but it didn’t for my letters! Anyone have the same problem or solution! 😭
Jackie Gomez you might need a stronger/thicker thread!
Dana Jean any suggestions of a better thread?!
Are these as thick as normal letters? (I hope my question makes sense lol). I'm so excited to make these!!
PS I'm a sigma kappa too! 💜 ΦΕΦΗ

If you save the scrap from the inside of the sigma’s, they look like cats!
Love your video, but the music overpowers your voice…
how are these sororities associated with Greece? :p
