  • This is part of the new wheel series I am working on!! I am remaking my wheel videos on my new SKUTT wheel!!! Here is a link to my wheel- available from most good pottery suppliers. skutt.com/products-page/potte...
The video is focused on 3 different types of bowl forms.
Traditional Rounded- Shaped like a “U”
Taller, flared, with small interior- shaped like a “V”
Wider, flatter, shorter- shaped like a really wide “U”
All three bowls are from 1.5 lbs of clay. I am using Laguna B mix cone 6.
I ordered my bisque tiles from Bailey pottery. www.baileypottery.com/c-171-6...
My new series will offer new videos with tips and tricks to successfully wheel throw pieces- from beginner to intermediate to advanced. I will be offering a good deal of EXPLANATION within the videos to help people understand the mechanics of why things work the way they do! I often tell my students they learn more from their mistakes than from their successes in throwing. In these videos in my series, I will try to distill my best tips I have learned from my successes and failures, and my students' struggles as well. Two things have led me to becoming the potter I am today. Countless hours of making pots, (and explaining how to make pots), and understanding and learning from my failures when pots didn’t work out! These are the things I want to share with you- to help YOU become a better potter!

Great video on the basics of throwing a bowl. Even advanced potters can use refreshing once in a while. Have a suggestion. I also have the tile holder from outpost pottery. Take a Sharpie and make a mark on one corner of the holder. Likewise make a mark on a corner of the tile. If you line these up every time you insert the tile your pot will always be positioned correctly avoiding potential wobble if you remove the tile and have to reinsert it.

Good suggestion! I was actually more worried about the 1/8" gap that I have between the tile and the edges of the holder that I thought may throw it off! :). I think I got it back on in the same orientation- but your suggestion is great! :)

Thanks so much! Nothing like practice practice practice to help improve! 30 years ago I had the desire and it took a ton of practice to get where I am! Keep at it!

I’ve been a hobby potter for 20 years. Recently my 26 year old grandson asked me to teach him how to throw pots. I’ve never taught anyone before and I want to keep each lesson doable and fun. I watch your excellent videos to give me ideas on how to present the subject of clay in bite size pieces. I want to give him every opportunity to succeed. Your videos have been such a help by describing each step of the process. You’ve helped me evaluate my own processes and improve my technique as well. Thank you so much for giving your time and effort to provide this info to us. I really appreciate it. 😊
