Hey Tim, was watching your low shallow bowl video and thought maybe you could try placing a piece of paper on the rim of the bowl and lightly sealing it to the rim, then trying to remove it :)

that the clay that was just messed up will be wetter than when it was new. wetter clay sometimes is suggested by folks because its easier to move around but it also a lot harder to pull a wall. Reclaiming the clay, which is drying it out and wedging it so that its homogenous makes the clay closer to new and better to try to throw with.

Hello Tim ! I am a bit confused....someone said to make a small cylinder before shaping it to a bowl....whereas I see you go straight to the shape of the bowl after breaking in.... which method is the better one for a beginner like me ...please help !
The issue with doing it from a cylinder is that when you stretch the rim that far you can end up with a really thin lip. It’s also hard to get a rib in right away... which means more steps more time the clay is wet.
Clay is completely and easily recyclable until it has been bisque fired. All you have to do is wedge it back up. If it is too dry, let it re-hydrate with some water in a sealed bag, then wedge it up. If it is too wet, then you need to let it dry out some, plaster bats can make this process faster.
I noticed you didn't explicitly compress the floor after opening the hole. Does using the rib to shape the inside accomplish this when you are shaping the floor?
Alvaro Arnal compression is a myth. We cannot compress the clay, it’s not in a contained volume it’s not a something we can push on hard enough to change its volume. Proper drying is much more important than any kind of pushing on the bottom.
Hi Tim- that's very interesting. I'm still a beginner but this is the first time I've heard that. I've been taught "compress or DIE!" What do you do then to avoid the dreaded 'S' crack? BTW- thanks for all the vids; they have been incredibly helpful in my learning!
Alvaro Arnal s cracks are a result of Harding or stiffening of be outside area of the clay while the softer less dry area changes shape to accommodate that. When the inner part finally catches up it’s shrinking causes cracking on faulty areas. Proper drying and clay prep will eliminate or reduce cracking.
although i agree proper drying will avoid s-cracks, i believe that compressing a plate with a sponge/ wooden rib is very helpful in making sure you don’t have a sloped surface, and it forces some of the water out since the base is quite thin (usually)
Sydnee W have you ever been able to squeeze water out of a piece of clay? Pressing hard with a sponge is likely to give ridges, All that’s needed is a little push either a rib for shape.

Without a kiln to fire the pottery it’s not going to be ok for food.
What sized rib would you recommend for an exaggerated v-shaped bowl (think oriental style with a small base and steep, angled walls)?
You might not use a rib. They make great curves but harder straight lines. You can start with the yellow zero.

I have a two pugmills that allow me to mechanically reclaim all of my slop and scraps and mistakes.

With the direction of the wheel I spin it right handed but I use my left hand the most is that a problem??
The_ Unknown if the wheel is spinning ccw then the left hand is in the middle and the right is outside.
