  • Background: The Samuel Goldwyn Company, Inc. was an independent film company founded in 1979 by Samuel Goldwyn, Jr., the son of Hollywood mogul, Samuel Goldwyn, Sr., producing and distributing independent films. In 1991, SGC merged with Heritage Entertainment and was later reincorporated as "Samuel Goldwyn Entertainment". In 1996, SGE and its library were acquired by Metromedia and merged with Orion Pictures Corporation, and was later sold to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer under the Tracinda Corporation in 1997, who currently handles most of the SGE in-house productions. However, films SGE merely distributed are now in different hands: The Chipmunk Adventure (a Bagdasarian production) has reverted back to the producers; Oklahoma! and South Pacific are owned by the Rodgers & Hammerstein estate through 20th Century Studios; and all of the Samuel Goldwyn, Sr.-produced films are owned by Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. via the Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. Family Trust and licensed to Warner Bros. for US distribution and Miramax Films for international distribution.
In 1997, Metromedia sold its entertainment group to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The Landmark Theatres group, which Metromedia did not sell to MGM, was taken over by Silver Cinemas, Inc. on April 27, 1998.
In September 1997, the company was renamed Goldwyn Films and operated as MGM's specialty films unit. A month later, Samuel Goldwyn Jr. sued MGM and Metromedia, claiming that he was abruptly let go of the company despite promises that he would continue to run it under different ownership. Another concern in the lawsuit was the use of the Goldwyn name, with the defendants being accused of “palming off specialized films produced or acquired by” the unit as though the plaintiff was still involved in its management. Goldwyn Films changed its name to G2 Films in January 1999 as part of the settlement.
After The Samuel Goldwyn Company was acquired by Orion Pictures Corporation in 1996 and by MGM in 1997, Samuel Goldwyn Jr. founded Samuel Goldwyn Films as an independent production/distribution studio. Until his passing, the younger Goldwyn owned sole rights to the use of the name and signature logo as part of the settlement of his 1999 lawsuit against MGM, which changed its Goldwyn subsidiary's name to G2 Films. Goldwyn previously operated IDP Distribution, which distributed films for Fireworks Films, Stratosphere Entertainment, and Roadside Attractions.
After Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. passed away in 2015, his son Peter now co-runs the company and since 2020, SGF has been licensing Sony Pictures-owned titles for Amazon Prime and other streaming services.
