If you don't have any retro handheld yet, you should absolutely dive in, but maybe not this one. Get a sub $100 device. That way you can start building your ROM library, and you can always move your SD card to a new device a year later if something really catches your eye. Even if you only get 6 months of use out of it, that's money well spent IMO. The kings of that price bracket right now are the RG35XX, the X55, and the RP2S. Happy gaming.

Wait, you don't have a portable device, right ? Then get one now, enjoy playing some games and then simply either buy retroid 4 or just skip it and a year or two down the line get the retroid 4+ or retroid 5. It's not like these devices have exclusives like the home consoles so don't get so hang up on it. Get something for cheap, enjoy playing games and then get another one later !

I've been looking forward to this video all week! I was trying to figure out what to get for my first retro handheld and almost went for the 353V, but I ordered the 405V a few days ago instead. I got it in grey, I agree it's the nicest colour of the 3. I like the extra power as well as the ergonomics, and I really wanted a vertical handheld for the nostalgia factor. I probably won't take it out of the house too much so the size is no problem - I may add an RG35XX if I want something more portable down the road. This video helped solidify that I made the right choice for my preferences, I can't wait for it to arrive.

I just came from the Joey's Handhelds review of this unit - thank the RUclips algorithm. I did. I think this Anbernic is pretty cool. I like the size, shape, and perceived quality. The performance seems very adequate for what I want to use it for. I have a decent amount of vintage handhelds; but, whatever retro handheld I buy will be my first. I do most of my gaming and all of my emulation on an older Android phone, an LG V35, mated to a GameSir X2 Pro. As a result; I'm very comfortable with Android and would prefer my future handheld to also run the OS. So that's a point to this unit's credit.
I'm not a collector. If I buy an expensive toy and it just sits on a shelf then I feel like I've failed myself. As you said at the end of your video, it feels like they're always coming out with new and better devices. So other than the Odin 2, which feels like an end game sort of device, I keep doubting myself as to when I should jump in to the pool. I feel like I'll drop $150 on something and accept that it can't run everything then immediately they'll come out with something at the same price that can and I'll be kicking myself for not waiting. Haha.
A great review as always. Thanks, Russ.

I've been waiting since I purchase and sold my Retroid Pocket 2 for this, a vertical handheld console in atomic purple that can easily emulate 2D games, and even dabble a bit on 3D systems. My first console, that was mine and not the "house game console" was the GBC, atomic purple, so MY nostalgia factor is that console, and make playing all the more sweet. Ordered yesterday, can't wait to have it in my hands.

Thanks Russ. I was weighing on which 4 of these devices to order. After reviewing them all I could not decide between the 405M and the 3+. So I decided to go with the flip instead as it has a more console feel to it and protects the screen when pocketing or placing into a bag. While I heard about issues with cracked hinges, I don’t think I will have that issue with the care I put into my devices.

    • @steel5897
      @steel5897 9 месяцев назад +1

The Flip is nice, don't get me wrong, but I still don't get the screen protection argument when you can apply a $2 screen protector to the 3+ and it'll protect the screen in your pocket just fine.
I put mine in a sock and throw it in my front jeans pocket, never had any cosmetic damage to it.

You know, I really appreciate how clear and honest your reviews are. You are not one to be like "This system is great, and it's a very cool device" just so you don't upset the manufacturers. I see a lot of RUclipsrs state that their opinions are their own, but then their reviews come off as a bit of pandering. While these vertical devices are great nostalgia, I admit, as a 40+ year old who's owned them all, they weren't really all that comfortable. I just dealt with it. For example, the SP was a nice addition, but I would really put my hands through some pain putting all those hours into Final Fantasy Tactics. I owned the RG353VS, and I sold it to a friend because I couldn't play it for more than an hour without getting some sort or fatigue in my hands. Anyway, I appreciate you stating your bias. Thanks and keep those videos coming.

I think once we get reliable PS2 emulation we will be able to get that reasonably priced all in one device that will keep a person satisfied for a awhile. Getting a lower priced handheld with a nice factor that can play up to PS2 reliably will pretty much give me everything I am looking for without having to spend 300.00-400.00.

@@livinlicious$50 R35S, instead of $60 Miyoo (worse screen, delicate, ).
If you know other with Miyoo that you might multiplayer with, would be the exception. Or want to pay more for a different device with wifi or HDMI out. Miyoo is flash over substance, not the budget king.
Also the switch? I'd dust off my DS or get a 3DS, first. Play Switch on Steam Deck. Only reason to get an actual switch is if you refuse to pirate, so you own it and the games just to be legal, but still emulate it on other hardware for better play.
People looking at this aren't satisfied emulating on their phone, don't want to carry a pc, steam deck and possibly not even a switch. Maybe they can't afford any of that or can't afford to pull out and risk a $200 device on the go. Sure you said Miyoo, but that device is risky and might have to buy multiple to get a functioning one or if bust the one you got. Of course all these budget devices are risky in terms of QC, support, compared to stuff locally available.
If you don't care about (can't afford) switch games, don't want saves held hostage, then that's another reason some look at these cheaper handhelds.
What I'm saying is the people in this market either can't afford or have other priorities not covered by what you consider the essential line up.

On the subject of hope for a new 405 in plastic, I wonder if any of the designers have tried flaring stacked shoulder buttons to the top side of the device instead of the bottom. Since the sticks stick out above the top surface, it would make sense to me to flare stacked shoulders to the top instead of the bottom. That way the overall thickness of the device is small. I would think it would be even more pocketable.
My personal preference would also be for a chipset that can do Linux, so make a 403PS with top flared shoulder buttons and swap the left stick and dpad like Russ suggested.

I could use some help figuring out which emulator console you’d recommend for me. I’m new to emulation consoles and I started off thinking about getting the rg35xx and running garlic is on it. Then I got to researching maybe the rg353vs with arkos since it looked just a tiny bit bigger and closer in size to my old gameboy color. Vertical form factor is what I’m after but now the 405v is throwing a wrench into things. It looks cool and likely something I’d want. Portability isn’t the utmost importance since I’ll likely play it on the couch and bed as you suggested in the video. Likely won’t be playing GameCube or ps2 but i suppose that would be a neat party trick. I’m curious to know your thoughts.

Ergonomics is often my main concern. I want something to convince me to move off my S21+, because that, with gamepad, is great for GBA and NDS. Which are the two systems I care about.
My phone integer scales 3:2 at ~4.5inches, I am interested in the KT-R1, but I'd be paying for a slim form factor, compared to phone+gamepad, but a screen that displays more or less identical to my phone for GBA.
I'm definitely still considering this though, even if I think I'll either go really cheap for a MM+ or RG35xx for portability and just save $ for a steam deck to get a big and comfortable super emulator capable of playing my PC games. This seems to be the vertical form factor option for those of us with ergonomic concerns, at least for now.

I have pretty massive hands though, so while I loved the RG35XX/MM+, I found them very uncomfortable for faster paced titles or longer sessions.
I had the Retroid Pocket 3+ prior to the Steam Deck as well and found it almost unplayable without the grip.

Hi, thanks for the video. I do have a questions though (and I may have commented this already on another of your videos, in case sorry...) - in the "bummers" section you mention thisdevice not having HDMI out and being able to only connect to an expernal screen through casting, however there is multiple sources saying that it can output video throguh the USB-c port (of course, throught the use of a specific USB-c to HDMI cable or dongle or converter or whatever). Is it possible for you to test this? USB-c itself and Android can certainly do this, however I guess it needs the porper software, in addition to the correct USB-c controller/port, however it might... and apparently it does, according to other souces. in any case, thanks!!

an RG351P (good, but not the best for the GB, GBC and arcade games I’d like to play on it),
a couple of RG351VS (awful, uncomfortable, fingers touching, the grey is dull the black clear shell looks amazing).
However, the RG353PS is amazing, well priced and really comfortable, works as a TV console and a portable one. I completed childhood arcade games I never thought I cared about.
Also, the RG 280V is a delight and a truly portable small wonder of joy.
