So mealiness is cell-level texture we can feel?! That blows my mind a bit.
Thats not what it is, it isnt direct. On the cellular level the cells dont hold properly which causes larger scale mealiness. Thats what you feel.
Mealy: Dry and crumby. For the 50 people who didn't know. When the juices dry up the flavor disappears. If they are shipped too far, picked too early also.
Yup, mid thirties here, and never heard of fruit being called mealy, in fact the only thing I can recall hearing it referenced too is corn meal.
@@chrismcghee4867 I heard the term mealy before, but I thought it was spelled as melee, lol.
In Brazilian Portuguese, we use the word "farinhenta" ("flour-y"), given they feel like biting into a spoonful of flour.
@@chrismcghee4867 -Okay imagine dried out corn bread.
In German it's "mehlig" which also means flour-y. I could see mealy developing out of english speakers pronouncing mehlig
“I don't like mealy fruit. It's all coarse, and rough, and irritating... and it gets everywhere.”
I killed all the apple people! Not just the men, but the women and children too!
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Plagueis the Wise's mealy fruit? I thought not.

tip - mealy fruit is often fine and tasty if used in a smoothy. that's what i do with mealy apples. or soup.
True
@@annanicholson5309 yeah, mealy banana makes amazing smoothies.
Oh yea I hate mealy soup but you’re right, it’s great in a smoothie
Apple soup? O.o
LizTheRipper Right. What?
My best advice is to avoid the red "delicious" and go straight for a honeycrisp.
definitely
They apparently used to be good before they were specifically selected for color alone, inadvertently ruining them altogether due to a random quark in the genetics.
Honeycrisp are where it's at. Red delicious are ok in baked goods, but not so great to eat to just eat raw.
@@ElectromagNick oh yeah? I will have to look into that! My wife and I both had episodes of our lives thinking that we didn't like apples just because both of us grew up in households where red delicious was "THE apple". We have been working to fix our bias with many different non-mealy varieties since then. I give honeycrisp the specific shout out because they are so large, crisp, and lovely as a hand-eaten apple, though the classic granny Smith is still my favorite for baking.
@Micah Miller Dead on! HCs are what turned me into an apple eater. Used to be completely unenthusiastic about the apples. Them and their “offsprings”, Sugar Bees and Cosmic Crisps. Too bad they’re at the more $$ end of the spectrum. 😕
If you like HCs, also try the Kiku. Opals are also good; they’re sweet, juicy, and have that light crispness, kinda like a good piece of watermelon. BUT!! No staying power; turn mealy faster than other apples.
Red delicious is a marketing joke, one of the most boring apples I have had the misfortune of trying. It amazes me that they are still grown and marketed. They do not have to go mealy to be a bad apple, they start that way.
I felt that. FUJI apples arete superior apple
I think red delicious apples are the best. 😅

I’ve never heard of the word “mealy” but I don’t like the sound of it for some reason. I guess I understand why so many people hate the word “moist” now.
I never heard of a fruit being "mealy" either, but when I hear moist I think of an excited little snapper and I dont mind at all
NPC #102117 Yeah I think of a cloth, or a soft sponge cake.
I know what “mealy” actually means, but it still calls to my mind “meal worms”.
Makes me think of mealworms
“Disappointing fruit”? You did a video about me?
🤣🤣🤣
Nice
Tip for mealy apples! They're amazing for making applesauce. Recipe:
5 whole apples, peeled, cored, and chopped roughly (medium chunks)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup water
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/4 tsp salt
2 cinnamon sticks (or powdered cinnamon to taste)
Allspice (if desired, to taste)
1 tbsp brandy (optional! I use cognac)
Add all ingredients to a pot, bring to a steady boil. Lower the temperature and bring to a simmer. Simmer with a tight lid for 30 minutes, or until the apples are soft. Remove the cinnamon and use a wooden spoon to break down the apples in to a chunky, mushy consistency. If mixture is still too wet, simmer uncovered until desired texture. This is perfect both hot and cold, and it works well with most kinds of apples (imo) but I really like Golden Delicious apples this way.
lol, making "applause". I know you meant applesauce but still.
@@Kobolds_in_a_trenchcoat And my brain read applesauce with no suspicion until I read your comment. XD

Red delicious apples are the worst apples and that's a fact
They're more like red grossness apples
All apples have different uses. Some are for baking, some for eating, some for cider, and Red Delicious is the one that you use to keep doctors away. Preferably by throwing
I like them when I get a good one. However, they seem very prone to being mealy, browning and bruising. :(

It's weird to hear that mealy apples are unfavorable, because back in morocco the riper and mealier the apple the sweeter and pleasant it is seen as.
It's one thing if it gets mealy from being overripe. It's another if it gets mealy from mishandling.
In the US the most popular apples are crisp. People pay 2 times as much for Honeycrisp / Cosmic Crisp apples
Weird... Aren't you supposed to keep most fruit out of the fridge? The only fruit i stick in there is berries.
It's the Mealworms, they get in there and meal it up
I've had these honeycrisp apples in the fridge for over a month and they still taste juicy, sweet, and delicious
i love that the German word for "mealy" is "mehlig" which sounds like the fruit is "flour like". Thats exactly like it feels like for me 😅

Cool.I learned a new term in English. Here in Brazil,we call a Mealy Apple "Maçã Farinhenta",because it's texture resembles a coarse flour(Farinha),almost like a cassava flour,or Farofa as we call it here.

I definitely laughed too hard at that.
Eumelanin Knight Not all “fruits” come out of the “fridge” equally pathetic... this dude bein’ homophobic???
Actually, Red Delicious apples _are_ inherently terrible.
I agree. I have only met one person in my life who likes the things! I also no longer even buy peaches or nectarines cause most are mealy and tasteless before they even make it to the kitchen and get thrown in the trash.
Yeah, I don’t know who eats those. They’re gross, I’ve never had a good one, but I’ve rarely had a bad yellow apple.
Golden delicious all the way!
@@chevon1920 Green for me.

Some very useful information! 👍
In my experience, I have noticed apples are much crispier and tastier if I store them in the fridge vs on the countertop. Plus the cold just tastes better imo. I never buy Red Delicious though because they suck no matter how you store them lol. If your apple is mealy, just stick it in a smoothie or apple cake or pancakes or stuff nad bake it or something.
This information is so useful!
Pears, man. Every time.
This video assumes that I store my fruits in the fridge...
I've never been so interested in a quick question
AMAZING Video, @SciShow
So, if it isn't refrigerated at the store beware putting it in the fridge. Gotcha.
It's called mealy because after taking one bite you don't even want to have a meal anymore.
That...makes 0 sense.
@@DrMedicineManMD No, it's actually spot on.
A mealy piece of fruit can be so disgusting it makes you lose your appetite.
No that is not even the right kind of meal, mealy refers to something that is like coarsely ground grain(ie dry and rough).
When I read the title I thought it said "meaTy" and I was like WTAF 🤣
I was watching an Adam Ragusa video where he described corn tortillas as mealy and I didn’t quite know what that meant but instantly assumed it was something like “gritty,” Now a]a video shows up on my feed about mealy fruits. I didn’t care enough to look it up, so I guess thanks for uploading on the same day.
0:56 "the cells are less likely to burst and release their flavor" hmm so the flavor of an apple comes from the guts of cells hmm interesting but that is a thought I could have lived without lol
Juice is plant cytoplasm.
What- what did you think it was
@@RabidRekijo well before this I just thought it was the apple itself I never thought too deeply to come to realization that the flavor was coming from the insides of cells, and I don't know why but the thought of it is unpleasant lol.
Never knew it was called 'Mealy'! I've always just called it 'powdery'
That's better than what I called it
"Styrofoamy"
Great video.
What I learned today: Fresh fruits are supposed to be refrigerated. I have lived in the American south my whole life, and we always just keep fresh fruit in the pantry or on the windowsill.
Um I've never put any of these in the fridge, was taught not to when I was young lol.
Omg I love mealy apples, thank you for telling me how to make them
I press a bit on the apple to know if it's mealy (or sandy as i like to say) after a few tries i know how much pressure is a good apple and I'm right confidently 80-90% of the time, a hard apple is also usually a sweet one
Hey SciShow!
What happens to the eyelashes that get in my eye and I can't get out? They just... disappear?
The movement of your eyeball eventually works them into the corner of your eye and they fall out when you blink or rub your eyes.
You cry like a baby because it hurts
@@nunliski I got that. But they don't always do that. Im curious what happens to the ones that don't end up in the corner of my eye lol. Could you imagine if there was a little pocket behind your eyeball that just collects random eyelashes..
@@wesleypipesgaming19 That's also where all the missing single socks go. You read that on the interwebs, so it must be true.
I suggest taking a shot glass, filling it to the brim with water, dipping your eye in the water and blinking rapidly while your eye is submerged to get grit and lashes out. Also, there is no little pocket...they just fall out without your notice.
This is why peaches bought in Washington State are so awful. My friend from Georgia came to visit and had a FIT over our "peaches". Peaches shouldn't be nearly as crunchy as ripe apples. I assume it's because they freeze or refrigerate them as soon as they're picked and then ship them here in refrigerated trucks. Someday, I will go to the south and eat a peach right off the tree. For now, I'll stick to my state's forte: apples.
Ew, as crunchy as apples?!
Here in Iowa the peaches are hit or miss, but you know when you get a good one.
@@woodfur00 honestly I never understood why people liked peaches for most of my childhood. We have oversweet canned peaches or crunchy/chewy peaches. There is no in-between. It's quite sad, honestly!
@@TheDevler23 That's just tragic. A great, juicy peach is a religious experience.
I dont eat a ton of fruit but i actually dont have any idea what you are talking about. This dry fruit problem is complete news to me lol
If you eat watermelon and you've ever gotten one that the inside was more like eating flavored sand, that's the sort of thing he's referring to.
2:45 "impossible to tell which fruit already has a mealy texture...." When I'm at the store, if I have this question, I just take a bite of the fruit in question. Yes it's uncomfortable, and of course I BUY THE ONE I BIT whether I like it or not, but at least I don't buy two dozen, only to find at home that they all have the texture of a baked potato. The problem is especially strong with peaches, and I've been burned many a time (until I started doing this).
I don't think I've ever eaten a mealy fruit before
I've never eaten an apple that tasted bad. Especially red delicious. Best apple ever!
There might be a way to tell apart by using hyperspectral scanners. There's a French fry company that uses this to sort out badly-cooked fries before they're packaged.
Guess that's why we'd always leave the apples in the garage to keep cold right after we'd picked them off the tree.
This is the most critical knowledge SciShow has ever provided
So what I learned from this video is to eat apple blossoms directly from the tree to avoid falling victim to mealiness
Close to as you can get, tomatoes too, right off the plant.
Eat the seeds. Avoid the whole awkward tree situation.
That sounds like it might make a delicious tea...
Oh my god I never knew the word for this
You can actually tell, at least for apples, you tap it with your finger and nail, if it sounds empty it's not juicy, if it sounds full it's juicy.
Who refrigerates whole fruit?
@illyounotme Yes but that is not you refrigerating the fruit.
“Apple time, apple time.” Kawhi Leonard
i hope i never encounter the word "mealy" ever again we should get rid of it
Knock on the fruit and listen to the sound. If it is higher sounding it is good, if it is deeper it is mealy.
Buying Refrigerated fruit
But I like the Red Delicious’ texture...
I have never had a Red “Delicious” that was anything but mealy awfulness. That particular apple type can go straight to hell to make room for better apples.
maybe I'm not thinking of the same thing but I actually really like the texture of grainy apples
No, it's the same thing.
What about plums? Or do they fall under one of the other fruits mentioned
I like them like that
If I eat an apple I go for the fuji apples they are the only apples in my local grocery store that I never had mealy.
But when I eat bananas the common banana in America I usually like when they are green.
I’ve never experienced this!
2:17 LOL
At most grocery stores the produce person will gladly cut you a bite of a fruit to sample.
I wonder if you guys could answer this: what's the right way of using a can opener?
Top tip: Smell your fruit. If its fragrant, it's ripe; if it is less so, it is under-ripe and if it is too fragrant it is far gone or has gone mealy. Sometimes mealiness is hard to detect, but with practice you notice it has a different scent. Some fruits are easier than others. Try with soft fruit, oranges and bananas first, then apples are a good next step.
How I store my fruits:
Store in fridge at purchase (2C/35F): Blueberries, raspberries, grapes, oranges (sometimes), Strawberries
Store at room temp (21C/70F): Bananas, oranges, Melons (Pepos) Apples, nectarines, peaches, plums
Why? Because when I buy fruit I chow down on that stuff quickly. Fruit that is quick to perish goes in the fridge. Always buy and use fruit straight away or as soon as it goes ripe. I almost never have a fruit go grainy and sad on me except for the rare case I lazily don't check or smell the fruit beforehand.

Never heard the word mealy before!
Never had this happen to me n I'm 45 yrs old plus I'd never heard of it neither
Cold air holds less moisture - shouldn't it mean that it'll dry slower? Less "space" for water to evaporate
I've eaten fruit like this recently, and I wondered what was going on. Now I know. Hurray!
I'm confused what "mealy" means in the context of less-ripe peaches. Hard nectarines are my favorite and they don't see to be dry or grainy? (I happened to be eating one while watching this video lol)
