Pretty sure the reason they were censoring her name for so long, is that Bill kept calling her "Kiddo", which is a common term of endearment, usually for a child, but can also be for someone who's just significantly younger, similar to "son" and such. We are led to believe he's calling her that as a sign of affection. In reality, he's just calling her by her last name, which is *much* more distant.

I've heard so many people react that way, at the end, "That's a weird cry/laugh," and I wonder what it says about me that I never felt that way. I mean, until a scant few hours before her revenge was complete, Beatrix didn't know about BB. Do you think she ever considered the future, after she'd gotten them? Still awash in the loss of her daughter, did she ever think she could HAVE a future?
And then, there she is! BB! She's little, and perfect, and ALIVE! By the next morning, Beatrix was free, alive, and had a future to care about. That's a friggin' polarity shift. That's a continental movement. That's a supernova going off.
So how do you react to ALL that? I think a good cry/laugh is EXACTLY what's in order.

Here's a fun series of connections - the movie that Beatrix and B.B. watch together before going to bed is "Shogun Assassin". "Shogun Assassin" is an American movie that was made by literally chopping up and combining parts of two Japanese movies and dubbing it all in English. The two Japanese movies used were the first two of a six part Japanese series known as the "Lone Wolf and Cub" movies. The Lone Wolf and Cub movies were based on a Japanese manga (comic book) series that was written by Kazuo Koike (who also wrote the screenplays for the movies) . Kazuo Koike also wrote another manga and it's film adaptation: "Lady Snowblood". The movie "Lady Snowblood" starred Meiko Kaji in the lead role. Meiko Kaji also sang the theme song from the movie, a song called "The Flower of Carnage." "The Flower of Carnage" was used In Kill Bill volume 1 - you hear it at the end of Beatrix and O-ren Ishii's duel in the snow.

That blue "cool car" damaged Uma's body, and it almost killed her. (Look up the story of Harvey Weinstein, for more nasty details)
The name was bleeped out, to add an air of mystery. Oddly enough, you could see her name in Vol. 1, if you pause fast enough to see the plane ticket. Also, Bill did call her "Kiddo," due to it being her surname, but we naturally assumed it was a term of affection, since he was older than her.
For the theatrical release, we saw the list one last time; the name of every actor who played the assassins was crossed out... except for Daryl Hannah. Her name had a big question mark in front of it. When it's on television, they take that part out, for some odd reason.

A big component of Tarantino's movies is the element of hommage to other movies that had great influence, to his work.
So, we can view Kill Bill volume 1 as a reminiscence to the Japanese cinema.
There s even an Anime scene in the movie.
Kill Bill Voliume 2 - on the other hand - seem to take its inspiration from Hong Kong "Kung fu" movies. The legendary master Pai Mei, or the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique are both not inventions by Tarantino, but are direct borrowings from some of the greatest hits, of that special genre.
I guess it would be fair to say that - in that context - the Kill Bill movies represents Quentin Tarantino's Kotau to the east asian cinema.

14:40 I'll say this bc it is not often talk about, especially with all the myth and legend around it, but Martial Arts per se are and were ALWAYS primarily about endurance. Being able to take pain and function with and through it. All the Wu Shu training, Shaolin monks training, and every martial art trainings, the number one thing they teach is the ability to accept pain. It's the most important and notorious trial to allow you to unlock your full potential and I'm not even talking about combat. The pain you learn to endure, that comes necessarily through discipline, makes you better in every possible things you can think of, from a philosopher to a politician, from a teacher to an artist. And I really do feel that's exactly what is being so masterfully portrayed here. The master is evaluating her potential through her determination and discipline to function with and through pain. If you can't do this, you will always be average or less. Always. Physically, mentally, spiritually, everything.

The actor who portrays Pai Mei is Gordon Liu and his most famous movie is "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin". You definitely should watch it and react to it. It is one of the top 10 greatest kung-fu movies of all time. I enjoyed K.B. Volume I for the violence and Volume II for the story line. I'm glad that you enjoyed both films.

And now Mary if you remember a little girl at the beginning of the first movie and what Beatrix told her after killing her mother - "when you grow up and still feel raw about it I will be waiting". Now Tarantino said that he will wait until this little girl actress grows up and film Kill Bill vol.3 when she avenges her mother's death. She is an adult now I will have you know and Tarantino actually said recently that part 3 is on the cards. Nearly 2 decades later :-)

For me, back when these movies were originally released I watched the first one every day in the theater for like two weeks straight. It was by far my favorite of the two. I only watched the second movie for about 5 days.
But over the years, the backstory and Carradine's portrayal of Bill and his exchanges with Uma's Beatrix has grown on me to the point where now the second volume is by far my favorite. I guess this comes with age and maturity.
E2A: Altogether, Kill Bill 1&2 are my favorite things on film of all time.

Kill Bill Vol. 2 pays tribute to both the Spaghetti Westerns (Italian) movies of the 60's and the martial arts, Kung Fu movies (from Hong Kong) from the 70's. Quentin Tarantino actually wanted the original actor who played Pai Mei in the Kung Fu movies in the 70's to play the role of his character in this movie. Sadly he passed away before Quentin could ask him before filming Kill Bill Vol. 2. So I have heard or read in an article.

    Planet Terror (R. Rodriguez)

20:25 Not a lot of people notice, but that's Michael Parks, who also played the Sheriff. Michael was a chameleon of an actor who should've gotten WAY more parts before he passed. He's excellent in Kevin Smith's Red State. Gordon Liu also played 2 parts, Pai Mei and Johnny Mo (The bald leader of the Crazy 88)
There's a lot of people who want a sequel where the daughter of Vernita Green, aka Copperhead, goes after Beatrix.

To answer your question, I do like Vol. 2 better. The fight in Japan was incredible in Vol. 1, but I loved the Pai Mei storyline and the stuff with Elle, and the ending with Bill and B.B. was so great in this one.

  • @jeremybr2020
    @jeremybr2020 2 года назад

When she says that Bill would have claimed their daughter, it doesn't mean that he would have taken her from her mother. That is unless their relationship went sour, then yeah, he probably would've taken her at that point. What Beatrix was concerned about would be that her daughter would grow up in Bill's world. Bill would be a major influence in BB's life. A life of death and assassinations. And she didn't want that kind of life for her daughter. Which is why she ran.

I like the first film better. Not because it has more violence, but because its violence is just more… elegant, much more elegant… it has style and esthetics to it. I mean look at the end, the sword fight in the pure, snow-covered garden, the music during that (dance-like) duel. That’s almost poetic.

I was disappointed with this movie when it came out. I expected something with a larger scope. More minions getting murdered and a long battle with Bill...but I watched it again and now I am a bigger fan of this movie then the first one now. The characters, the dialog, and emotional depths it covers when covering relationships is brilliant. Really, an amazing achievement of a film in my opinion.

    - It was initially 1 movie, but cut in 2 volumes because it was too long.
    - It is based on old western movies, where there were more action in the first half.
    - Killing Bill was less violent than the previous ones because the bride changed. She is not a killer anymore.
    - The bride said "you and I have unfinished business." to everyone except Budd. She killed of blind everyone except Budd.

Just in case you didn't know/notice - veteran actor Gordon Liu played the head of the Crazy 88 in Volume 1...and he played Pai Mei (literally "white (eye) brow" in Cantonese) in Volume 2.
And also (and this one continues to surprise me) another veteran actor, Michael Parks, played Texas Ranger Earl McGraw in Volume 1 and he played Esteban Vihaio in Volume 2.
(And the character Earl McGraw also appeared in 'From Dusk till Dawn' (written by Tarantino and directed by his friend Robert Rodriguez) and in both segments of the Tarantino/Rodriguez 'Grindhouse' double feature "Planet Terror" and "Deathproof".)

For the younger out there, you should watch the 1972-1975 TV series Kung Fu, with a young David Carradine. It's the reason why Tarantino cast him as Bill. That series was an international hit, and together with Bruce Lee's movies, the reason why Chinese martial arts became mainstream worldwide both in movies as in real life. Before that, it was all Judo, Karate and very clumsy and slow fights in old spy and cowboy movies.
(And no, that series' idea wasn't stolen from Bruce Lee. Even Wikipedia knows that. Check the series' article.)

Tarantino bleeped out the name Beatrix Kiddo because >>> "It's a stylistic choice, but I think it was part of her character development. If she's just The Bride/Black Mamba, this assassin's roaring rampage of revenge is a little less humanized, and so a little easier to accept. Once she gets a name, Beatrix Kiddo becomes a real person and we might have to question her actions and justification." -- PocketBuckle

  • @Roger6233
    @Roger6233 2 года назад

I actually love 'The cruel tutelage of Pai Mei', because Pai Mei doesn't go apeshit when Kiddo cheats and tries to hit him with a rock, but he does when she assumes she can't do something, and his cruel tutelage is applied in order to remove that thought from her.
You think you can't punch a hole in this? Then all you'll do for a month is punch this untill you make a hole in it.
