- Ágætis byrjun, the second studio album by Sigur Rós, is an otherworldly epic. The album offered a reaffirming lesson that audiences didn't need to understand lyrics to find meaning.

This may be one of the rare times anyone had ever said these track names out loud in a video.
atomicbrain9401 pronounced impressively wrong, though.
Lūkas Bmr close enough
@@gunnamarta9096 it kinda hurt when he said 'byrjun' like 'bæ-arijun' but then again, I pronounced it wrong for a while too.
Also really? I'd not expect them to be tax evaders.
that's old news, they were cleared of charges because it was their accountant's mistake
It feels like that album is totally unknown to me lol
Definitely one of the best records ever made.
Completely agree
I've had massive arguments with a friend about this album. 100% agree with you. 100% disagree with friends choice.
One of ... because () is even better!
Nothing better when you're in the mood.
Excaclty how I feel about it too
valiant effort with the pronunciation.
Conor Kirley I feel that it would be better to look it up instead of improvising though
Conor Kirley agreed. Give this narrator a beer.
2:21 in particular
I love this series!
Who doesn't?
Viðrar vel til loftárása is the best song I've ever heard
Indeed
I could not agree more.
First dance song at my wedding
One of the best in the album
What a pleasant surprise Pitchfork!
This album is from another fucking planet. It's some next level shit.
Svefn-G-Englar goes down with Radiohead’s Paranoid Android, Aphex Twin’s #3, Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here, and LCD Soundsystem’s Dance Yrself Clean as the greatest songs ever written, as far as I’m concerned.
Olsen Olsen, man! That bass line is impossibly good.
I would argue that Home is better than Dance Yrself Clean
#3 & #20! As well as Stone in Focus for whoever has the original vinyl release!
That’s quite an all star list. I’d too add, Letdown-Radiohead. Satan in the wait-Daughters. Oxygen-Swans and maybe the suburbs- arcade fire and accordion-Mad villain
dead airwaves Couple years later and I agree now
This album.....this band....is just ridiculously important to me.
For a solid year I would fall asleep _every single night_ to this album. It's in my brain forever. Every note. Every nuance.
It's a perfect record. Von, their very first album, is another excellent falling asleep record.
I don't even know what to say....their music just reminds me that music _and_ life itself....is the most important thing that exists. I listen to Sigur Ros when I'm feeling more depressed than I ever have felt.....and I listen to them when I feel overcome with gratitude for being alive at all. And somehow....both of those reasons make perfect sense in the context of their music.
Easily one of the most underrated bands of all time. Although us fans.......GET IT.
This album really got me into post-rock and really just instrumental/symphonic music. Do Mogwai's "Young Team" next!
i've heard the 'tjuuu' in svefn-g-englar is a song moms and dads sings to lull their babies in Iceland, which makes absolute sense with the music lyrics and i think that's beautiful
I love this album man
Tracklist:
1. [untitled]
2. Sleep-g-Angels
3. Starfleet
4. The Flight Liberator
5. New Batteries
6. The Heart Beats (Bam Bam Bam)
7. We Are Good At Air Conditioning
8. Olsen Olsen
9. Good Start
10. Avalon
You messed up seven. It means its good weather for airstrikes
Icelandic is hard
I love them. Geniuses. The creators of that whole sound are geniuses.
Literally one of the best bands in existence.
worth the wait on this one, pitchfork! At least the pronunciations were attempted for “yahn-see” and the gang
Easily in my Top 10 albums of all time.
Agreed. It's 1 of 2 albums that's a personal 10 to me
@@ng3933 what’s the other one
One of the best ever albums
I've been waiting for this since the start of the '5 minutes' series.
p.d.: do 'arcade fife - funeral' or 'cocteau twins' - heaven or las vegas next!
I second the Cocteau Twins option !
I love Arcade Fife.
Barney Fife too.
they're great too, they haven't even released an album, but it'll be a classic for sure.
David Ley lol well done 👍🏼
I second both of these opinions!
I love this band and this is (one of) my favourite album of theirs so far.
Listening to this album on a ship during a windy night with only darkness and all the stars above me was an out of body experience
Those fireworks in Staralfur
Sounds even better live.
need a Slowdive Souvlaki A.S.A.P
Ranggi Arohmansani Last year's self-titled is better
Until you find it in a 5:00 video, you should know Pitchfork actually made a whole documentary about it few years ago. It's like 40 minutes long and it's also on RUclips, with interviews and all. It's really neat, you should check it out!
Albin Lundholm Better is always subjective, but the story behind it never changing, Souvlaki bring them to the place they finally deserved, but it's always interesting to see how media and critics hate all they work and put them on struggle in early era.
Estelle Grignon Definitely will check, thank you!
They did an entire documentary on Souvlaki: ruclips.net/video/Sjr6esFXJl4/видео.html
I'm definitely happy that Pitchfork (at last!) made a "Liner Notes" video on Agaetis Byrjun, but I feel it's not the best of the series. I had the impression it stayed at the surface of it, though the idea at the end of a universal language is an interesting one.
But as said in a previous comment, because of Pitchfork, I now remember why it's easily my favorite album!
Thought I might hit you with some Icelandic info
both on the pronunciation and the meaning of the song names.
Hopefully it can help you depict a better and fresher image of the album tracks.
ps. Thanks Pitchfork for trying to read them out loud haha!
Svefn-G-Englar: Swebn Gaynlar - Svefn means sleep, but the latter word can be understood either as Genglar: Walkers or Englar: Angels
Starálfur: Star Aulfur - means the Staring Elf
Flugufrelsarinn: the Fly Liberator
Ný Batterí: Nee Batteree - New Batteries
Hjartað hamast: Heeartath hamast - Pounding Heart
Viðrar vel til loftárása (hardest one): Vithrar vel til loftaurausa - suitable weather for airstrike
Olsen Olsen: a popular card game (in Iceland) where usually the word Olsen is said twice when you have won the game
Ágætis byrjun (most important): Au-guy-tis biryun ("i" pronounced like the word "bin")
If you ever happen to travel to Iceland, there's nothing like playing this album on the road.
I don't know an album that suits the landscape as perfectly.
This is my fav SR album, I am SO grateful for it.
That weatherman is now the president of Iceland
Hell yeah pitchfork!!! So surprised for featuring them!
My favourite album
one of my favorite albums in my 20s when i first heard it as i just fell in love with it as it got me to explore a lot more weirder music.
Do Spirit Of Eden by Talk Talk
Had the same request!
I’d prefer “Laughing Stock”
Chris Serpicø Either one's fine
They could make a special video that would comment both, as both are excellent and had a major influence on so many groups, such as Portishead, Radiohead, Sigur Rós or No-Man. But if I have to make a choice (and if I was working for Pitchfork) I would choose Spirit of Eden because of its signifiance. It was such a radical change of musical direction for Talk Talk that it just cannot be disregarded.
This is the Music for feeling sad and happy and hopeful at the same time.
One of my all time favorite albums.
My favorite album ever!
When you will make a video with Lift your skinny fists????
About. Damn. Time. Pitchfork.
Absolutely! Next time they should do Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
@@ajpdeschenes that would be dope, but i'm still waiting on In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
I really have hard time to get into this album. But because of your comment I'll give it another (fourth or fifth?) try.
@@ajpdeschenes you don't have to force it though (even if it is one of my favourite albums), it's just that the story of the album is just so interresting and that it's worth making a Liner Notes about.
Ah ah! I remember now why (while listening)! The "I love you Jesus" part always bogged me down, because I am catholic. And although it's folk, it has a "punk side" or "punk attitude" I would say, and being a fan of more symphonic or orchestrated music (Sigur Rós, King Crimson, Harmonium...) punk or noise rock just rebukes me. That's why I can't get into The Clash or Velvet Underground.
For what concerns my faith in Christ, I might enjoy a lot of music that questions faith (I'm thinking about Bonnie Prince Billy, or the first KC), its not a criterion to appreciate music, but it might not help when it's too ironic about it. It's just harder to imagine myself singing the same words in the car! But it does happen, and I sing it as it was a cry of the heart.
please do the masterpiece by Cory Feldman "angelik 2 the Core"
> Masterpiece
> Cory Feldman
Say what now?
Yes
Kid Cudi - Speeding Bullet 2 Heaven
Monsieur La Guillotine r/woosh
That would be a great April fools vid.
I clicked on this video to hear the album title get butchered, and I was not disappointed.
hahahah
The “Rós” In Sigur Rós is pronounced the same way as Ross.
And I think
Ow guy tis by are un
closer
I thought it was more
ow GUY tiss burr YOON
LOVE SO MUCH THIS ALBUM
Pitchfork youve done it again!
I am not sure, but the sound you hear as "it's you" stands for Icelandic "tju". With this sound mothers try to calm down their babies, so that they fall asleep.
Yeeey. Amazing you did this. :D
Awesome series
I love this album more than I love myself
such a spectacular record
The icelandic Slowdive.
MY GOSH THAT TITTLE PRONUNCIATION
💙 a forever favourite
i will not stop until i finally get on a plane to Iceland listening to this on repeat.
To me, it's the most significant album ever

Best band ever!!!!
OH MY GOD THEY DID IT
Heck yes
Sigur Rós
Absolute fucking masterpiece
PLEASE just do one of these on In the Aeroplane Over the Sea!!
God bless dolphin voice
Ow guy, dis by are yun!
Are there any bands today trying to evoke such massive emotions? Don't get me wrong, the music of 2018 is freaking amazing but I do miss that emotional maximalism.
Takk would've been a great album to do one of these videos too it's probably there biggest hit in there Carrier
I first heard this on KCRW
Olsen Olsen ❤️🖤
VB MUTT yes
First time I’ve ever heard someone said it
you should do a Liner Notes for Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Totally agree! A liner on GBY!BE would be great
Hey you, what's you're favorite track on this album and why? Mine's Ny Batteri. I just love the emotional and melancholic journey it takes me through. I love ALL of the songs on this album though, and that even includes Avalon.
I've seen sigur ros 3 times but still can't pronounce any of their tracks except untitled #___
Man, bow down to the narrator
Svefn-g-englar is on of the few tracks I remember exactly the moment I first heard it, on the radio, in Brazil. I had to find out more about this record. Was not disappointed.
I was surprised you guys didn't mention Flugufrelsarinn. I used that song on an exercise at uni where you had to substitute a famous soundtrack to something completely different and change the mood. People were crying when I presented: ruclips.net/video/tVuvfBLtyVs/видео.html
Can y'all do a liner notes episode on Jane Doe by Converge next? Thanks :D
Please do portishead dummy or tricky maxinquaye
Please do Fever Ray - Fever Ray 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Fun fact Olsen Olsen is a card game that pretty much everyone in Iceland knows how to play. It’s very similar to Uno
Do a Burzum review
This commentator really practiced his pronunciation, before I started watching I was like “how the fuck is he gonna say half these words?” lol, anyway good album review, I’ve never heard of this band but they seem like really interesting guys.
Oh fuck. Apparently I've seen sigur ros without even remembering. ✊✌🤘 BIG TOP TOUR BRETHREN
(My apologies sigur ros. I was too excited to notice. First Radiohead gig)
at least he didn't say agaytess
2:53 is that a Cuban flag or a Catalan Independece one?
Morbid Angel pls
Kjartan...
They said they were going to release a 20th naive edition and it never happened. I had my money ready.
gonna only refer to Ágætis Byrjun as OWGAIDISS BAYOAREEYOUN from now on.
when they was 5 guys 😭😭😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔
While I appreciate the video about Ágætis Byrjun, you’re mispronouncing the title. The word “Byrjun” is pronounced like “Beer-yoon.” The y makes an ee sound.
Doesn't really make an ee sound. ý makes ee sound but y sounds like the i in "in"
@@pabbicool shut up
@@sheepdavis ?
Von was never like smashing pumpkins!
Some how this video fail to the album. This album is a masterpice of art, can't be explain in a five munutes video. It may can be describe better with poetry.
European rock is interesting.
The way you pronounce those Icelandic words triggers me. It's so wrong. But awesome album anyway.
I thought it was funny
Shut up
Wow... that’s real bad pronunciation
You guys butchered those words holy shit, they are not even close to what they sound like
The voiceover on this is awful. Please hire me instead. Thanks!
Terrible review
