Of course, I can't wait for iOS 13 at WWDC and all the awesome changes it will being to iPad multitasking and making an iPad-only workflow even better! And yes... that's a mic shadow on my face. Hey, great video and really helpful. I've also switched to am iPad Pro add my primary device and found it can do most everything one one gets switched over.
I do have one question for Chris or anyone one else here...can you chipboard the FileBrowser recommendation to something like Documents by Readdle? I certainly don't mind paying for apps but before I do, I'm wondering about the differences in these two apps - especially since Documents can already natively handle zip files. Any thoughts? Thanks again!

The iPad Pro does everything I need with the exception of PC games. That will always make me keep a windows machine around but when I'm not playing games, I'm on iPad about 90% of the time now. I wish these had been around when I was in school. You younger kids have such great things now to help you succeed.

I should add never say never. If pc game streaming takes off at a reasonable price, that could one day be what allows me to cut out windows altogether. Only time will tell.

You didn’t mention the most magical part of the iPad Pro! The cellular ability! I am obsessed with my iPad, and besides the minimalist vibe you mentioned, the fact that I have this sleek, lightning fast slab of glass that I pull out and get REAL work done literally anywhere and never have to worry about connecting to wifi is amazing.

I love my new 12.9” iPad Pro. You’re right, this thing is a beast. I ended up getting the 1TB model which does have 2GB extra RAM but honestly it’s so fast regardless, there’s really no app in the App Store that has challenged the incredible internals of these new iPads. I ended up getting the 1TB though specifically for on-device storage. It’s good to know though that the wireless external SSDs work and it’ll be interesting to see if iOS 13 will bring my wired external SSD support to the USB C port. Here’s hoping. I will say that the MacBook butterfly keyboard and the T2 chip crashing was a major influence for me on transitioning completely to iPad Pro for my workflow. And I have no regrets. I also love the giant 12.9” display with FaceID. I can have two full size iPad apps running side by side with no need to pinch and zoom. Again I’m looking forward to seeing iOS 13’s changes to multitasking. I would be interested in you reviewing the Brydge keyboard so I hope that they send you one, or if you buy one than I hope you at least do put out a video on it. Great video!!

Thanks. Your video convinced me that I should go with the 12.9" and consider it my new "laptop". I have a top of the line late 2013 15" MacBook Pro and 5+ years later it is still going strong and handles everything I throw at it. There is definitely an advantage to going top of the line for longevity rather than saving money on a lesser model for the short term.

This is as near perfect as a video gets! RUclips and it’s relatives like Facebook justifiably get a lot of criticism due to people misusing those platforms, but just like fire, one can use it for destructive and constructive purposes. This video, in my opinion, is a great example of why the Internet is so vital today - especially for consumers. This is the first and only video someone should view when considering the migration from MacBook to iPad Pro for the “go for it” slant. I’m sure there are other videos out there for the other side of that argument, but I doubt any of them are as well executed as this one. 5 Stars, sir! You’ve definitely gained a loyal subscriber.

I’ve been using my iPad as my Mac alternative for 6 years now, I’ve really liked it and love all the updates and getting to experience the tablet morph into what it is now. I enjoy the user friendly feeling and the simplicity of the apps. I really didn’t like all that file fuss with my Mac and the iPad is so much more easy to use. I use my Apple Pencil all the time and have a Brydge iPad Pro 2018 keyboard which actually makes the iPad look like a MacBook again and it’s got unlimited viewing angles so it’s fantastic. I really don’t type as much with the keyboard as I have so long been one finger typing on the screen so I can type as fast as I can think one letter at a time and I do it with the Apple Pencil.

Great thoughts and suggestions on how to better use the iPad. I use one myself as an IT consultant and love the fact that I can take quick notes on it, write proposals and bid for projects with it. I even use a remote application for systems support for my users. There are limitations, but if your not needing to do any serious coding, then it works just fine. I like it’s always on capabilities too. All I have to do is hit the power button, pull out my Apple Pencil and I’m ready to go. I probably use my iPad about 80% of the time. It did take some getting used to but I really like the portability and battery life this device offers. I can also relax with a movie or music when I travel which also makes it nice. =)

I just ran across this video this week, roughly 2 years later lol. I recently switched to an iPP completely. My question would be a recommendation for which keyboard case to get. I do light typing and my main iPad usage if content consumption. I do go to meetings every so often. I really like the magic keyboard but don’t know that I can justify the $350 price tag. I like the Logitech but don’t like the large footprint cause my desk is kinda small. I know there’s the smart folio as well but don’t particularly like the typing experience. Keep the videos coming!!!

Hey Chris, great video! I made the switch to the iPad Pro 11” from the 2017 MacBook Pro 13 inch with Touchbar back in October when the iPad released. I didn’t use it as my daily driver until recently (I have a work MacBook), but I just received my Brydge Pro keyboard in the mail, and let me tell you, this thing is the real deal. The Brydge keyboard “bridges” the gap between tablet and computer to almost nothing. I noticed in your video that you miss the function keys from the MacBook keyboard, but the Brydge keyboard has them. It has a home button, lock screen button, brightness controls, volume, media, etc. It is heavier than the iPad itself, but that build quality is exactly what makes it worth it.
This thing has it all and I think you should check it out (if you haven’t yet).

I've pushed the 11" to it's limit. I'm a seminary student so I my work consists of a lot of goodnotes and document accessing. I access a lot of documents so I have Readdle apps (Documents, scanner, PDF expert). I scanned in a two thousand page Hebrew lexicon and added it to documents, it's about 2GB. Couple that with the large notebooks I have in goodnotes and I regularly max out the RAM. Love the 11" size, but 6GB RAM would've been a nice option (not just on the 12.9...)

THANK YOU!!!! Puffin Browser! I had a MBP 2017 and only used it for work, (sales) I don’t do any photo or video editing because its just not my thing, i just like having it if i need it. So i made the discussion to switch to an iPad Pro and realized that my company’s CRM SUCKS with mobile safari. It was just terrible and clunky and even if i requested the desktop site, it still wouldn’t function smooth or correctly at all. Within seconds of using puffin i saw a HUGE difference. Thanks again cheers!

Great stuff! Although when it comes to the battle of keyboards, I’m afraid I’m going to side with Brydge here. Having used both, the Apple keyboard and the Brydge keyboard, it’s safe to say that Brydge does offer more. Is it a value for money product? For me the answer is a resounding - YES! Great battery life, great key travel, great functions and easy to use. Best part? The service! I live in India and on a trip to New York, I ordered my Brydge for the old iPad Air 2. Worked like a charm but one day it stopped working. Instead of thinking too much about it, I put it aside for the next few months. One day, I reach out to the Brydge team and they needed evidence that the keyboard was faulty. (Some keys wouldn’t function) a small video was proof enough. They asked me to destroy the product and send proof of the same and as soon as I did, they dispatched a new product. Within a week or so, I got a fresh new product from their Hong Kong plant. No troubles since then. When I picked up the iPad Pro 12.9 (2017) version the first thing I did was to pick up a Brydge. Never been happier. Works like a charm all the time. Oh did I mention that it holds a charge for a year? Beautiful and productive that’s what Brydge is to me.

I love your videos. Always full of good information. I wanted to speak a minute about the keyboards. I decided to go with Apples magic keyboard 2. I use my tablet in many different ways and I wanted something that I did not have to snap on and off all the time. Best of all it has the function keys and volume keys built in. I know sometimes it’s not quite as convenient but I love the versatility that it gives me in how I use my iPad.

I can’t imagine doing it without an iPad and GoodNotes. I don’t write full papers on the iPad but I use the &^%& out of it to find, catalog, organize and retrieve research and notes. iPad + online research library + GoodNotes + Dropbox. I've managed to workout a good workflow on the iPad Pro but my only problem is when working over 4 hours on it, and editing documents, I always have to point to this or that on word, excel, powerpoint and multiple word documents and that results in neck strain. I finally realised I need a pointing device. Am hoping rumours am hearing of mouse support is true. This is the only reason then that when am going to work for 4 hours or plus, I go back to the Mac. Keyboard shortcuts don't go far enough because office apps don't have that much shortcuts to work with.

How do I connect an iPad Pro to a retina MacBook since the connector is USB c to USB c

  • @HectorMartinez-xv4re
    @HectorMartinez-xv4re 5 лет назад

I decided on a iPad Pro 11in. Instead of a traditional lap top running Windows (like a Surface Pro) since I already have a Windows desktop PC, so between Windows and iPad iOS, I pretty much cover all of my needs. Also, I have the Anne pro 2 keyboard that can connect to multiple devices via Bluetooth and switches back and forth between them so I can use the keyboard (its a small 60% board) with my iPad as well as my PC. I am typing this on the keyboard. If I needed to go to a coffee shop or something to type something out on the iPad, it would be easy Peary to take the KB, although I would recommend something low profile like the CoolerMaster SK261 or whatever.

FWIW, File Browser also allows you to use storage devices plugged into the Lightning port (or USB-C), such as i-xpand.

Today is the first time I’m using the iPad Pro 2017 with Apple Smart Keyboard to replace my MBA 2013.
I’m a IT support and I mainly use Remote Desktop, RUclips, office 365, amazon, B&H...
I just love the battery life, for an hour jump Desktop, it uses around 8% battery!
I rarely need to use it for all day, but I do watch video on it, it uses around 10% to steam a 40mins 720p video.
After the first day, I have around 70% battery left for around 3hours usage! When I used to with the MBA, I must keep the power adapter connected...
Will I consider iPad Pro 2018?! Most likely No, the usb c is lovely but the price tag is way too much...

I like that you are using the term "iPad alternative" and not "replacement". For many people, a laptop will do the job better, and if that's the case, stick with your laptop! The iPad is the hammer for those who were previously still using screwdrivers to hammer in their nails because said tool hadn't been invented yet. There are some tasks which are better done on a tablet, and that's the niche the iPad fills.

I really enjoy using LumaFusion for video editing along with my Apple Pencil. I recently bought my first iMac just so I can use things like Final Cut, Premier, etc and features not available on the iPad editors like stabilization, noise reducers, etc but found I actually prefer using the iPad Pro. I’m sure if I mastered shortcuts the iMac/Mac Pro would be quicker but I’m just used to my 2018 ‘Pad. To anyone wondering if the ‘Pad is powerful enough I can tell you that A12 chip is simply amazing and my iPad churns out 4K video like butter. (I’ve heard it handles 4k60 10 bit no problem too, but I don’t shoot 10 bit myself) Exports in real time for sure, sometimes faster. Can’t wait till Apple kicks Intel out of the loop

For me its definitely more work touching the screen especially when working with documents over a long period of time. 4 hours plus without mouse support and hope to get a solution for that either from  or third party providers. IPad Pro is just too good to drop because of lack of mouse support. O

It's not flawless (definitely update the firmware) but it let's you choose whatever so you can use your existing hard drive/ssd. And there is app for ios, android, win, mac, linux

Affinity Designer can probably handle those legacy files. I had been using DarkRoom as a LR replacement, especially after they broke Lightroom mobile, but I prefer the results I get from RawPower an app developed by the lead engineer for Apple Aperture (he was not responsible for Apple killing it though). The UI is better on DarkRoom than on RawPower, particularly the image picker. With DarkRoom you can slide your finger to select contiguous images whereas each image has to be tapped to pick in RawPower.

Thanks for all the iPad videos. I recently bought the iPad Pro and wanted to use it as my main device. I own a 2013 MacBook Air but I didn’t want to spend the money on the current designs so I’ll wait till later if I even bother to do so. I may go Mac Mini hooked up to my TV instead as a backup option.
Although i bought the original iPad Pro a while back, I was convinced back then Apple would be more serious. It didn’t happen but I feel now, with Adobe, this platform is ready to be a more serious device. I definitely see the full Adobe suite coming soon enough.
The only area where it may lack is Web Development which is my work. So far I have Coda from Panic but I really wish there were more serious alternatives. I think this is the last 5% that’s left to be complete. Sure, its not a Mac replacement but you are right, you need to change your mindset.

I have a USB-C hub from Kingston because I didn’t want to keep waiting for the Hyperdrive to be in stock, but the import of RAW photos through the SD slot literally never works. Don’t know if that’s a Sony problem or an ‪Apple problem.
