@@WhatOnEarthh You are comparing very different genres and even with that I think you haven't understood how deep the concept of Tumbbad is. Tumbbad is a piece of cinematic brilliance. It has an excellent story that works on many levels, it has brilliant cinematography, the actors were all terrific, the music was international quality. You'd be hard pressed to find a better execution of the concept. And while movies like Padmaavat are also very good, but just because a movie is based on real events doesn't make it any better than a fictional movie. Movies are not where you should be learning facts from history anyways. Also, it's much easier to make a visually spectacular movie when you have the kind of budget that Sanjay Leela Bhansali works with. Another reason why Tumbbad is brilliant is because this was a brilliant movie made on a shoestring budget. This movie was a labor of love. You can see that everyone in this movie contributed absolutely their 100%. Also, there's isn't one single dialogue or scene in Tumbbad that's in the movie without good reason. I can't say the same about Padmaavat, for eg. There are several songs and scenes in Padmaavat, that honestly, made the movie pointlessly longer. Your other example of Taare Zameen Par is actually a good example of a tightly written scripts with no unnecessary extra scenes, dialogues or songs. Several other Indian movies like Queen, Dangal etc also have very well written scripts and screenplays, but are they brilliant? I don't think so. Tumbbad is brilliant. You know why? Because it makes viewers think. By the time the movie ends you realize the monster is not Hastar. The monster is human greed and the father who encourages greed and vile habits in his son. It shows how society becomes worse generation by generation because not only do we not see own faults, we encourage the same in our children. That we find cover for our fatal flaws by thinking they are something better than they are. I remember the dialogue that the father says to his sahukar friend, "aap hisaab rakho, main saahas rakhta hoon." He doesn't see his stealing as stealing, he thinks he is brave for doing what he does. And let me tell you one more thing about good cinema. I think the year Tumbbad was nominated to go as India's entry for Best foreign movie, was the same year Guillermo Del Toro won an Oscar for his movie, The Shape of Water. Guillermo has made a career out of the concept of that supposed supernatural evil is nowhere close to the evil humans are capable of. Pretty much all of his movies are made on the same concept, Crimson Peak, Pan's Labyrinth, Devils Backbone and of course Shape of Water to just name a few. Conceptually Tumbbad is the same as the kind of movies Guillermo makes. And while Guillermo has become an internationally acclaimed, Oscar winning director, Tumbbad struggled to find audience in India. Perhaps because people, just like yourself, missed the actual concept of the movie. Please don't get me wrong, I am not trying to diss you. I am merely pointing out that while Indian cinema has definitely improved, but the vast majority of our audience still doesn't understand brilliant cinema even if it stared them in the face. Btw, Tumbbad is a cult classic now.
Tumbadd release date was 12 October 2018 and Gully boy release date was 14 February 2019. Were they supposes to send either of the movie for the same year?
There is another detail about circular motion of life: the younger brother sadashiv dying out of nowhere was symbolic: he sacrificed- unknowingly - to help her mother get rid of greed. She stopped caring about the coins after he died. Same happened at the end, the son stopped caring about the coins after after his father died. The movie had a lot symbolism.
Omg I never noticed it, I thought it only happened in the ending, but now that you mentioned, yeah infact the mother denied coins after her son died, wow another new found information, amazing!!
This movie had a budget of less than $700k. Which is like a fraction of any mainstream Hollywood or even a Bollywood movie.. To accomplish this in that budget is just impeccable.
Fun fact: The actor who played Vinayak Rao's son also played the grandma. Also what the movie showed here is that greed increases over the generation. Son was greedier than the father, so no matter how careful you are, eventually someone will get too greedy, slip up and get bitten by Hastar. Thus continuing the cycle of curse.
The actor how played vinayak roa is also director of movie. And also story behind making of these movie is also interesting. Interesting may be not the proper word but i don't know how to describe it. Peace ✌️
There s a nice detail in the ending. When The son denied taking the loin cloth and went away, the rain stopped. Indicating that the curse has been removed. The gods have forgiven his family.
Nope, it just stopped means if you see carefully in the beginning when Sarkar died, rain stopped during his cremation but appears only when Vinayak insist his mother to tie that old lady and ask about the treasure.

Hey guys….can y’all react to the movie “Aamis”….it’s a movie about cannibalism….it’s actually a wonderfully directed regional Indian movie from the state of Assam….if you guys read the reviews (non-spoilers) you’ll get an idea why I am recommending this movie.
Tumbbad was a commercial flop but is a cult classic for sure. Let me explain what layers it has, layers that run deeper than the womb of the goddess (read further...). 1. Hastar has gold and stays inside earth because gold lies deep in the earth. But grains and crops grow above the soil. Hastar is forbidden to touch food as food can be shared among people and satisfy people's need. But gold creates something more than need. It creates greed. Hastar was so greedy that it had a choice to jump towards grains first. But it went for gold. A choice that became its curse. Just like in Harry Potter Voldemort chose his own death when he decided to attack baby Harry first (he had a choice between Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom) 2. Risk is always required with greed. Sarkar (the old man who fathered Vinayak) was not courageous. But Vinayak (during his childhood and after his mother dies when he is grown up) seeks monster Grandma and asks her about the treasure. His brave nature convinces her about his inherently greedy nature and hence she tells him about her secret treasure. Remember she never tells that to her own son Sarkar because Sarkar was timid. 3. Indian independence is not merely a narrative device it is a metaphor of young India (pandurang) achieving freedom from age old Colonial greed (ancestral curse of greediness that runs in Gradma, Vinayak and Pandurang). 4. When Grandma tries to eat boy Vinayak in the hut because she cannot touch grain (Hastar's curse spreads to humans too), so she needs to be fed like how Hastar needs dough dolls as offering. She cannot cook also. Thats why when Vinayak is covered with flour due to kitchen mishap, she doesn't touch him due to the spread out grain flour. She locks his ankle using chains and drags him along to her room and fixes him to the potty bed to unscrew her mouth (which is shut so that she can not bite people) to eat him directly, without touching his flour covered body. Eating Vinayak' head through potty hole is synonymous of an important reference (read on for the revelation...) Meanwhile some more metaphors... 1. Sarkar poori zindagi "dhundta" raha par use kucch nahi mila (Sarkar the old man tried searching all his life but couldn't find anything) Change the gender Sarkar poori zindagi "dhundti" Rahi par use kucch nahi mila. (Government tried to search whole time but didn't find anything.) Tax evasion and black money... Greed of the rich and the corrupt. 2. Baki Devon ne uspe waar karn shuru kiya. ... Poorti ke Devi ne use apni kokh mein sama liya (The gods started attacking Hastar and hence the goddess of fulfillment took him back in her womb) Explains why Hastar has a wounded blood red body. Remember that Hastar's statue is not bloody. Its actually a plump baby statue. But real Hasar is sickly and malnourished because he is starving since ages due to his curse. Bloody becuase he was attacked. 3. Hastar has gold coming out of his loincloth esp. his backside. Generally Indians kept money in the front of their loincloth in old times. So why Hastar is like that? Because it's an analogy of a diseased person who is always hungry and can eat piles of food at once but whatever the person eats is pooped out undigested (its called Bhasma Rog or a form of an untreatable disease called Bulimia Nervosa). Just like Hastar, the coins coming out of backside of his loincloth are cursed... Because its literally Hastar pooping the gold out while he eats dough dolls... He not getting any nutrition from those dolls... They instantly become gold.. Hastar gets no relief... His diarrhoea continues! Well in old times people traded grains for gold. It includes people working for growing crops and then working out in the market to sell it for money. Such transaction is termed as svarna-bhadra (auspicious gold)... But what happens in Tumbbad is simply aghori easy money. Remember monster Grandma trying to eat Vinayak through the potty hole? Poop has a deeper reference in Tumbbad. No wonder that poop money is abhadra (insidious) and Pandurang eventually rejects it! 4. Why does Hastar multiply? When gods attacked Hastar he was split into millions of particles and to save him Mother goddess took him back into her womb in his destroyed form (uncountable particles). So there are many elemental Hastars in her womb each hungry of food since ages. They appear as per the proportion of the food offered. Greed is infinite so is Hastar. I can go on and on about Tumbbad. Tumbad surely has a potential to create a shared fictional universe. zombies, pandemic, cosmic horror, geopolitical drama... It can reach any of those topics if written smartly.
Go watch kgf ch 2 Or RRR on theatres one of the best theatre watching film you will ever watched (greater than some of Marvel films also 😗) Go make these films as your first Indian films on theatre pleaseeee

19:39 you were talking about to make it huge ,, That's the msg of the movie "Greed" evil that always connected with our life😅
It took 5 years to build this masterpiece and India audience make it flop 🤦♀🤦♂
Hey guys….can y’all react to the movie “Aamis”….it’s a movie about cannibalism….it’s actually a wonderfully directed regional Indian movie from the state of Assam….if you guys read the reviews (non-spoilers) you’ll get an idea why I am recommending this movie.
Tumbbad will be a milestone engraved in Golden letters in the history of Indian Cinema.
True masterpiece.
Just like in Harry Potter Voldemort chose his own death when he decided to attack baby Harry first (he had a choice between Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom)
Eating Vinayak' head through potty hole is synonymous of an important reference (read on for the revelation...)
Meanwhile some more metaphors...
1. Sarkar poori zindagi "dhundta" raha par use kucch nahi mila
(Sarkar the old man tried searching all his life but couldn't find anything)
Change the gender
Sarkar poori zindagi "dhundti" Rahi par use kucch nahi mila.
(Government tried to search whole time but didn't find anything.)
Tax evasion and black money... Greed of the rich and the corrupt.
2. Baki Devon ne uspe waar karn shuru kiya. ... Poorti ke Devi ne use apni kokh mein sama liya
(The gods started attacking Hastar and hence the goddess of fulfillment took him back in her womb)
Explains why Hastar has a wounded blood red body.
Go watch kgf ch 2
