I finally became minimalist and got rid of 90% of my stuff. I'm finding that I'm still spending a lot of money. Food, services, and entertainment is really expensive now. But I do buy less stuff, because I know I don't need it or don't have space for it.
Congratulations! Am on my path and only got rid of about 20% of what I want to acheive. But I do it little by little. I became a minimalist in making rebel at a point because I went too crazy and extreme. I ended up buying back many things. But then I realised that I was suffocating with all these objects. Then I realised that it s not about owning only 10 items but rather what is enough and reclaim space to move more in my apartment. So am back on the journey as motivated as ever now:) 💪🏾 0:09
Your senior self will thank you Marissa. We are retired and so many family and friends in the same position struggle. They have mortgages and credit cards and car payment. I am so glad my husband of 49 years and I always worked together so we wouldn't have to worry about money when we were old or rely on our kids. The biggest and best thing we ever did was about 30 years ago my husband switched jobs and had a big bump in salary. We talked about all the things we could buy which was fun, but then decided to live how we were living and just pretend that money did not exist.
Thank you so much for sharing another great video. My mother taught me a very valuable lesson about money when I was 16. I was still in high school and working part time she bought me a car so I could drive myself to and from work an school. I had to pay her back so much every time when I got my check until the car was paid off. I was also responsible for my own gas. I could spend whatever other money I had on whatever I wanted. We had a little circus come to town and I really wanted to win this teddy bear. I ended up spending all of my gas money I'm trying to win this teddy bear which I never did get. I asked my mom for some money for gas and she would not give me any. So for the next week I had to walk to school and to work and home . She said she done it to teach me that I have to put my needs first before my wants and it worked. I'm 63 years old now and I've never had to walk anywhere for lack of gas unless I chose to walk. Always take care of your needs first.
#2 is SO important! It's why I nag every newly engaged couple I know to get some pre marital counselling or do a marriage preparation course. I know so many couples who will spend hours discussing what colour chair sashes to have at their reception or what song to have for their first dance, but they never, ever discuss things like how to manage finances post marriage. And then 6 or 12 months after marriage, they suddenly hit huge problems when they realise that their views on finances (or family or any other major topic) are miles apart.
Auto Pilot Finances!!!!! Yes!!!! Absolutely the best way to cut out decision fatigue for retirement, savings, and get bills paid on time! No more late fees wasting your money!
Your channel resonates with me. I have been watching you since the beginning. Becoming more minimal has changed my perspective of ‘things’. Impulse buying is a thing of the past. Mindfulness in need and want has taken over, as well as where would I store it if I bought it. Following your story has brought me from resentfulness and regret to a take charge attitude. I have gone from homeless with two children to owning my own home, and now to empty nest. I downsized to an apartment, and am debt free. Retired, I am able to follow my passion to be an artist and sell some of my work for extra money. You have been an inspiration. Life, as you have shared, has its ups and downs, mindfulness in how to navigate it is golden. You are a golden star. Thank you.
I love how you always explored where your habits came from; it's the emotional work you do that I find some valuable. My dad had all the money and my mom was broke. We lived in a middle class community, my dad made money that tout him in the lower upper class but the money spent on the kids was poverty level. There was little food in the house, we never went to the doctor, and you never even asked for a ride or to participate in sports or activities or for anything because you knew the answer would be no. As an adult I had low paying jobs and lived a small existence until I confronted my childhood and how all that neglect affected me.
I’m sorry that you had to go through that terrible experience, but it certainly sounds like you’ve overcome your past and come out stronger on the other side 💪❤️
Agree with you, especially on the point of marriage. I started dating a man who was able to show me how investing and smart spending had enabled him to more than meet his financial goals. He cared about my financial future even before we married. I think having a partner with the same financial goals is key to financial success and a happy marriage.
I really needed this, I've been having an awful time since I got my bachelor's degree in the beginning of summer, dealing with sickness and death in my family and being unemployed with no income for 8 months... I'm were at my lowest point during december but this month I've been trying to pick things up and am trying to work and plan for my future
OMG protecting yourself from others who take advantage is such a good point! I'm a generous person and before I knew it, unrelated someones who lived with me hadn't been contributing at all to the household. I asked them to move out and never heard from them again. Oh well!
I treat your videos like it's movie night-in as they're as fun! I make coffee, sit and feel comfy and press play to learn to keep going as a frugal person! Much love and appreciation from Palestine
Changing my mindset about money brought the biggest change for me. I learned that money is evil and rich people are selfish as a kid. As an adult I turned these believes into more helpful ones. My husband and I made huge progress in our finances being now almost debt free and making way more money while working less.
I have to shift my minset about money too! Thank you for your comment because it resonates a lot in my life and a good reminder that it is something I want to improve on 🙏🏾
Such powerful lessons, and all the more powerful because you've lived them. You don't just talk the talk, Marissa, and it's one of the many reasons I love your channel!
I cleared a lot of personal debt over several years, but then some spending crept back in this year (bereavement, my own health issues ...). Have put this onto an interest free money transfer card, and have 9 months maximum to clear it. Starting No Spend now, so should have it paid off quicker. Wish I could go back to being a teenager and save as much as I could. I am 53 in February and have wasted so much money over the years. Thank you for these videos. We are planning early retirement next year, and I needed these messages
Thankfully my spouse and I are on the same page. Some people questioned why we bought a small house in a less desirable town and drove a very basic older car when we could afford bigger and better. Keeping fixed expenses low when you’re first starting out can make a huge impact long term. We got used to not keeping up with the Joneses, or paying attention to different Joneses. If we’d bought the big house in the city it would’ve been a lot harder to afford all the other stuff - furniture, landscaping, a new roof - which all cost more when you live large. Not to mention all the lifestyle temptations and people wearing designer clothes like it’s no big deal.
Thank you for sharing these personal finance lessons! The combination of minimalism and saving money is so powerful. It's inspiring to hear how these principles have made a positive impact on your life. Looking forward to implementing some of these lessons in my own journey to financial well-being
I LOVE your videos, and so does our 12 year old son! You have such a calming voice, and you are so encouraging. Our family is currently doing a 4 month no spend challenge after getting hit with some hefty car expenses…it has been challenging, but we are learning how to do more with less and to be more intentional with our money. Thank you for giving us the push we needed to shift our mindset. Can’t wait for more awesome content! 😀
Thank you so much again for this video! One of the best things happening to me this year was stumbling across your channel and staying. :) Money was always an issue for me. I learned from my parents to keep my money together and never ever (never. ever.) purchase something on credit, but it was impossible sometimes (we need cars where we live, because public transport is SO bad), and I always celebrated when everything was paid off. Now we're debt-free, and it feels so, so relieving. Husband and I both have started side-hustles to increase our income, and we both have invested in our own provisions for our old age. I started to do our grocery shoppings with more planning and being more mindful, and that saves us a lot of money. Maybe it's old-fashioned, but I stopped using my credit cards so much and returned to using the physical money, because it makes me see and feel more how much I really do spend, and I have a growing no buy/low buy list I stick to.
@AtoZenLife I am trying to go through food storage and create meals based on what we already have, and buy filler items here and there. I used to think I needed to go to the grocery store every week and buy sale items, but that led to food waste. My husband loves to cook, too, (even more than I do 😆), so it's a fun challenge that saves money.
Marissa, you're amazing! I have been following you for a while now and have learned a lot, even though my upbringing and life experience (I'm 63 now) has taught me similar lessons. It is always good to pause and reevaluate your habits, sometimes you slip. I often share a video with my kids as well. This video is one of them. Sometimes they'll pay more attention to what someone else says and does instead of mom.. Thank you!
I agree so much with your lessons. it took me a while to undestand that money equal freedom, but it is a life changer and i really learned to prioritize.
Money 100% equals freedom. Thank you for being so open as usual. You working on your cognitive triangle in every video I love that. I am slowly getting there. We splurge on high quality food that has always been our thing. I now prefer fewer nicer things.
Thanks Melissa. My best tip: pay off your monthly credit card balance completely each month. Never carry a balance forward if you can avoid it. You will see your Credit Score improve over time. A higher score may enable you to get a lower APR with another card with an introductory very low or zero APR. Better yet, pay cash if you can. And never spend more than your inflow. Resist treating yourself or going on a spending spree just, because you went through traumas or had a bad day. Ask me how I know.
I just love your videos Marissa. My background is very similar to yours. You have no idea how much you have helped me...& Therapy in a Nutshell which I found because of you. I am still a work in progress but making great strides. My hubby is very supportive too like yours.. Much love to you & your adorable family. Bridget🙏💕
👋🏼Just ordered the bundle, can't wait to implement these changes and get to where we want to be. Thank you for your very encouraging and useful content!
Another great video.as I brought a property young never thought about debt but love money does not buy. Minimalism was a shift to get focused on debt and find financial freedom ❤
This is my new FAVORITE VIDEO! Well done. So often we use the word great for what is actually good. Well, THIS VIDEO is GREAT! 🎉 Thank-you, for allowing me to become a part of your life/community, and for helping me understand the importance of conscious financial freedom. ❤Dr. McMac
Thank you for all these helpful tips! I retired this year and have started decluttering my house. Financial tips given with real life examples make it easy to grasp and follow.
I do a little decluttering each week. I love the Buy Nothing groups on Facebook. I have gifted many things there and at my local charity shop. It's adding up! I shop much more consciously now. 🙂
Thank you again for the great video! Your observations are so true… I was especially touched by your remark about how a marriage can make or break you (financially). I did have this very bad experience. Now as a single mom with two children it is very hard to build up savings… But I slowly keep at it for my children’s and my own sake… not easy though 🙈 All the best!
I've been following you for a while now, Marissa, and really like your no nonsense approach to minimalism. I, too, have downsized in so many areas of my life and live the freedom of not caring so much for "things" while caring for my soul. However, and this is a big one, I find myself recently living UP TO my means (I am retired) so.....I just purchased your MINIMAL BUDGET PLANNER and am looking forward putting your ideas into action in my life, starting Jan 1, 2024. I'll be back in touch to let you know how it's going! I love your channel and feel like a you are a friend just sharing your life with me. Happy Holidays to you and your family. Have a blessed New Year. Deb
Wonderful video, Marissa! Thank you for sharing! For anyone struggling with debt and overspending, the good news is this: Good saving, investing, and spending habits can be learned! I am living proof! Watch another A to Zen video!
Great video!!! Have implemented a few of these concepts in my life. AND THEY HELP!! I also established my CIT account about a year ago, and earn anywhere from $10-$20 a month!! 😁
Use the code CYBER50 to get 50% off your entire order in the A to Zen Life Shop » shop.atozenlife.com/discount/CYBER50 Offer runs from now until November 30, 2023, at 11:59 pm EST. Limit one use per customer. Minimum order of $2.50 required (that's the cheapest item in my shop.)
I just found out I'm pregnant and am overwhelmed by how many baby products are out there and don't know what I actually need. Can you make a video about how I can keep my minimalist vibe in my home and nursery but still have what my baby needs? Thank you so much for your videos!
Thank you for the video. I'm sorry to hear that you were taken advantage of so much. I hope that the girl, who stole the driver licence, didn't destroy your trust. There are many people out there and while some may be selfish, a lot of people are also kind and considered. And while even those may make a mistake sometimes, so do I. And you probably too. So, being careful is a good idea. Pay attention to what reaction a person has in different situations. Do they own their mistakes and take responsibility or do they pretend to not hear. Closing that circle of trust to any possible newcomers is however not that great. It would just end up cutting you off from the good people as well as the bad. Take your time to find out if a person is trustworthy. Be cautious. If you don't have much time at some point, don't trust too much until you have the time to find out enough to make your decision. But I hope you keep an open mind to the possibility of friendship. Stability is important. Not just a monetary. With friendships too. Best wishes from europe
Thanks for another great video, Marissa! I love the concept of money equals freedom. I've been trying to be more conscious of what I spend my money on instead of spending it on random things that don't have much meaning or long term value. Your advice about investing in a high yield savings account is one I'm going to look into. Thanks for all the great ideas!
Marissa, thank you for this video! You're inspiring me to move on and not letting put my hands down, too. When we moved to our new apartment, i thought, that there are a few stuff that we own and we will pay the debts quickly. But when i saw a boxes and boxes of our clothes, Kids toys, i was shocked.. It's passed a year already, but i'm steel learning how to spend less and live better without tones of kids clothes and stuff "just in case". But, what i prioud of is that we payed our debt to my brother! And now our goal for the next year is to pay off the loan. I hope, we'll make it) after that, paying off the mortgage will be the Last step to financial freedom))
Love your calm videos, thank you for your peaceful approach and optimisme. Could you please share your sources of financial education? I am from a very poor family initially and don't know where to start.
I am for sure doing no spend challenge on January!!! It's my first. :) I am a minimalist, but I changed from spending on bargains and sales to spending on good quality products, so in overall I have less stuff and only the things I really appreciate. But I still spend quite a lot of money. So I need detox baldy haha :D I hope to even take it longer, on February or March. :) Fingers crossed it'll work out at least for one month! :)
Just stumbled upon this gem! 🌟 Thanks for sharing these insightful personal finance lessons. RUclips's algorithm led me to your channel, and I'm so glad it did. Your minimalist approach to saving money resonates with me. Clicked the like button and subscribed for more wisdom! 👍💰 #FinancialFreedom #MinimalismMatters
I like the idea of making money a tool. It pretty much is but people don't really think much about it. I do think marriage is easier when you talk things through about everything, including money. My husband and I both came from families that were lower middle and needing financial assistance many times. Coming out of that, our parents are also hoarders. Thankfully my mom got out of debt when she started working full time when I was a teenager and taught me a bit about how to pay off debt. I was never in debt at all until Covid! Now we are almost out of it again, but I hate it and definitely love to give extra when we can towards what is owed. This coming year we will be debt free again. I can't imagine forgetting to pay a bill. Wow. Living below your means is great though. Wow your friend stole things from you?? I am so sorry. Why did she steal your license of all things?? I love seeing these old photos of you by the way. I may have to learn from you how to save for a house. We hope to buy a house in the 2-4 years and put some away for it each week. I know nothing about homeowning at all. I think part of why we haven't bought a house yet is because we are probably going to inherit a couple of them from relatives one day (which we are not in any rush to get to). Another reason is our rent is the cheapest you can probably find in our area and our landlord told us we could have as many kids as we want here since I keep it so clean, even though it is a small place (he also gave us permission to chop down walls or anything we want. . .it also helps I have known him my entire life of now 40 years).
I am attempting to budget for a used vehicle. I was alerted by my bank that I have been saving since February of this year. I intend to continue to save on my own to pay for my second vehicle. I need a used SUV to get around. I am trying to save $10K on my own without asking my folks to buy my vehicle.
When we were younger my sisters long term boyfriend came to our house and stole my moms wedding ring. We never recovered it. This was when we were in high school.
One of the reasons I got divorced too. Now on my second marriage with a husband who shares my financial values, it is a huuuuuge relief. Compatibility on this issue cannot be underestimated!
I finally became minimalist and got rid of 90% of my stuff. I'm finding that I'm still spending a lot of money. Food, services, and entertainment is really expensive now. But I do buy less stuff, because I know I don't need it or don't have space for it.
Same here! Good luck 👍🏻

Deb
That’s fantastic and I’m cheering you on as you work towards your goals this year 📣👏

I just found out I'm pregnant and am overwhelmed by how many baby products are out there and don't know what I actually need. Can you make a video about how I can keep my minimalist vibe in my home and nursery but still have what my baby needs? Thank you so much for your videos!
What a great sale price! I got both the minimalist and the budget bundles and I’m looking forward to trying them out!
I love the football analogy! A good offense and defense!!!🖤
Thanks for important information ❤
I love college books. I think they should still be required
❤👍 big thanks Marissa!
Thanks so much for watching! Do you have any lessons to add? 🙌
This is a great video. Wow!
Thanks so much 😁
Love your calm videos, thank you for your peaceful approach and optimisme.

Thanks so much and happy to have you here!
❤that about ur husband🎉
I am attempting to budget for a used vehicle. I was alerted by my bank that I have been saving since February of this year. I intend to continue to save on my own to pay for my second vehicle. I need a used SUV to get around. I am trying to save $10K on my own without asking my folks to buy my vehicle.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
When we were younger my sisters long term boyfriend came to our house and stole my moms wedding ring. We never recovered it. This was when we were in high school.
That is AWFUL! 😢
If that is your mother in the wedding picture, you look just like her!

What country do you live in Europe? Very helpful video, thank you!
We lived in Germany 🇩🇪👍
@2:00 literally why I'm divorced
One of the reasons I got divorced too. Now on my second marriage with a husband who shares my financial values, it is a huuuuuge relief. Compatibility on this issue cannot be underestimated!
Did you sell the Berlin house?
I believe they’re renting it to a family member.
you haven't gotten older ❤
Hahaha, I wish 😂
Bask Bank is paying 5.10% APR. It’s more than CIT Bank.
Never heard of them but thanks for sharing!

Are you including your husband's income as well, or only your personal income to gain the freedom?
We are a team, so in this together 👍
The Long hair looks better on you. Can you grow your hair back? Women with short hair make me think that you could be a gay!
