  • Jan Ten Hove is the Commander of Marine Corps Base at Savaneta in Aruba. At TEDxAruba Jan explained his 'Mission Command' philosophy. When Jan ten Hove works with a team, he starts with seeking clarity about the team’s goal. In “Mission Command” the goal consists of a clear, what and why - and not the way it is achieved. Absolute clarity about a team goal gives focus and success. Jan explains how this can benefit ANY team, not only military teams.

Jan has helped develop visions, missions and values and implemented them in the companies he worked with such as Bacardi, Grohe, Kenya Airways and Walmart. After three years as a consultant, Jan returned to the Marine Corps and is now the Commander of Marine Corps Base Savaneta in Aruba. The mission command philosophy with a yearly goal is implemented and last year the vision is defined: To become Aruba’s maritime security partner in 2017.

By using this philosophy, the team tries to achieve the 'HOW' they can do "things" to being ACCOMPLISHED. Then, the leader of the team (assuming there's a leader or consultant or whatever) sees the new panorama, then focus again on the field and look for the new mission. This process repeats once again until the end of the task or mission.
This philosophy works by being creative, by making simple to the team to bring new ideas to fulfill the mission. Just being clear what it's needed to do.
