Seeing these really makes me appreciate Daniel craigs era of bond even more.
For me Craigs tenure as bond is definitely my favourite, but it's a genuine pleasure to return to the bonds of old and rediscover what made them so good in the first place.
I agree, but I do like some of the classic Bonds, especially Sean Connery and Timothy Dalton and the first 2 Pierce Brosnan films.

The Living Daylights sequence was one of the best. 00' agents having equal camera time and the audience not knowing which one was Bond until the grand reveal. Timothy Dalton was also given permission to be the one to cling onto the roof of that Land Rover in the scene. And all topped off with a cheesy line. What a chad.

The Living Daylights opening is very underrated. The plane capture in Licence to Kill is great.
Licence to Kill's opening basically did what Nolan did with The Dark Knight Rises over 30 years earlier

@@christianwise637 Nolan has said that Dalton was his favorite Bond, so I definitely think it was an intentional homage. I think both scenes are fantastic.
I Love all daniel craig's bond cold open. It definitely set the tone for the whole movie.
Black and white in casino royale, quantum of solace's classic bond car chase, all the action combine in skyfall, and one shot brilliance in spectre, daniel craig as james bond walking on the roof is pure bond's suave walk, he definitely look badass in that scene.
In no time to die, they bring back DB5 as one of the main protagonists with all the gadgets

I liked the fact that the opening sequence at the start of Quantum of Solace establishes that the film is taking place directly after the end of Casino Royale, after Bond has shot the villain in the leg and introduced himself with the "Bond... James Bond" line.
Skyfall hands down had one of the best title sequences of any Bond film.

501st Egg the pre title sequence was gritty and action packed. Not boring in the least.
The Living Daylights had the best pre-titles up to that point without a shadow of a doubt. You don't even know which agent is Bond until the big hero reveal shot and a training exercise gone bad is the perfect basis for some action aplenty.
But - A View to a Kill basically created snowboarding. For that alone it’s legendary.

@@grantjones306 Absolutely not. Burton snowboards was created in 1977 among other snowboard companies around the same time. Apocalypse Snow which was a famous french movie about snowboard was realeased in 1983. The first Half Pipe was done in 1979. A View to kill is from 1985 where at the time ski resorts where already autorising snowbards on their land....
@@PierrePotonnier created is a tricky word, I guess the phrase widely popularized would be more appropriate. That influence from a global theatrical release with a popular character cannot be denied.

Casino Royale bond opening, is the best of them all. It’s so raw and brutal, just like the bond that Craig plays, but at the same time it’s emotional, and u can see, that he kills the first time, and how it made the second kill easier for him. And then the integrated gun barrel with the perfect James Bond theme. Just amazing
When you mention the wide shots in Skyfall I'm surprised you don't mention the cinematographer Roger Deakins. He's the reason many people consider Skyfall to look the most impressive out of all the Bonds movies.
Wow, nice walk down 007 memory lane... Best opening sequence in 007 franchise was The Spy Who Loved Me. The death defying leap by Roger Moore skiing off a cliff then opening a Union Jack parachute... In the 007 documentary Everything Or Nothing the producers said it is the only time in cinema history that audiences ever cheered for any movie within the first five minutes!
Rewatching them all that one really stood out for me too.
the time waiting for the parachute to open felt like forever... but all so satisfying..
I will always remember watching Goldeneye on the plane on my way to Thailand. The woman sitting next to me was Korean and neither one of us spoke a word of each other's language but after seeing Bond pursue the plane off the cliff, let go of his motorcycle, catch up to the plane, knock out the pilot, and pull it up just before hitting the next mountain (with the perfectly timed music introduction) I could see in her face that she was thinking "Yeah...right".
Can we all admit that Q's greatest invention is the wrinkle free Tuxedo in Goldfinger? 🤣
I love these little bits. I really love that they’re still doing them, as many films kind of forego them, even if they do have opening credits.
My favourites have got to be: Casino Royale (2006), No Time To Die (2021), Moonraker (1979), Thunderball (1965) and… The World Is Not Enough (1999), but that being said there a lot of others that I do appreciate ones like Skyfall (2012), or even License To Kill (1989) or Goldeneye (1995).
No time to dies cold open was actually amazing
The No Time to Die opening was the best bit of the whole film. The rest was poorly paced, rushed over important bits and dwelled on new, unimportant additions to the franchise
Way to just write off Dalton's era. How about the The Living Daylights opening teasing the new Bond after Moore as other 00 agents are offed before the big reveal of Dalton? Or the great parachute as wedding dress gag in License to Kill? Or the fact that Dalton did much of the stunt work like hanging out of a helicopter and so separated himself from "back-projection" Moore?
I never undersood why moneypenny didn’t shoot patrice after shooting bond on accident. Maybe she was too shaken up or whatever but that always bothers me

Because it took her a lot to concentrating her aim, mark her bullet point and she have to do it all while a train is moving.
Once she shoot, the recoil will throw her aim off and it would took too long to re-aim at Patrice. It would be too late by then. She essentially only have one shot and she failed.
@@johncarter4956 You would never shoot only once at a moving target with an M4 which has barely any recoil. Especially if the target is high value.
The Amazon series "Invincible" takes this to another level, and waits for someone in the script to mention the protagonist's name (the series namesake) - where they then mute the name being said, and instead show the title card on screen, followed by a splash of blood that persists and accumulates across each episode. It starts off as this almost pristine logo, but as the series goes on, the main character's innocence and ignorance about being a superhero slowly dies with each gruesome battle, the logo featuring his name, in-turn becomes more soiled with blood. It's a brilliant parallel, I've never seen that done before - and it's something that stood out to me that lent to the quality of the series overall.
Wayne (also on Amazon) uses the same thing. Not the blood, but slamming to the title card when someone says his name.

I love how with the boat that jumps over the other boat while spinning, they didn't even try to edit out the gas nozzles they used to make it spin.
This is such a good video. Many people have made an analysis in some way on Bond, but this is the best one I have seen. Some really articulate comments. Respect.
The old bonds are cheesey fun over the top movies, this is what made James bond the brand it is today, the new ones are dark gritty and a lot more serious to reflect the times but my love will always be the old ones growing up in the late 80s and 90s watching them on normal TV with my nan and grandad.
Always loved the GoldenEye cold open. Pair that with the memories of Dam and Facility on N64 and you've got yourself a classic pre-title sequence. 🚽

NTTD has two pretitle sequences! I don't know how long it was altogether but by the time the titles started I'd kind of forgotten they were coming because we were so far into the film.

I much prefer this cold, clinical Bond, who will do whatever it takes to get the job done. Someone who uses sexuality as just another a means to further that end, and not as way to appeal to juvenile, male fantasies. Feels truer to what such a character would actually have been.
Yeah, feel like it would be very odd now if they went back to someone like Moore or even Brosnan.

Well, that's kind of the whole point of the movies. Saying you don't want James Bond to fuck as a way of fulfilling fantasies is like saying you don't want Homer Simpson to be dumb as a way of making people laugh.
The weird thing is that the classy Englishman with neat little gadgets is ACTUALLY functionally truer, because that's how spys used to be in the 40s. You couldn't draw attention to yourself, and the gadgets were either bulky or not very good, because of the tech limitations of the time, but in terms of actual spying, Craig's bond feels the closest to what modern spying is. Sure there's still high octane action, but it tries to fit in the world of reality.
Everyone else feels like they're trying to do something that's actiony without actually thinking about what Bond could be.
Weirdly, it's the opposite of how most superhero films outside of Marvel have been done. Most superhero films nowadays try to ground the heroes in some reality, preferring to do character studies of the person behind the mask or almost making a film of someone's film theory essay on a superhero. It's all about "understanding" the character, and essentially doing versions of the character, instead of just embracing the silliness and making it an action film with intelligent drama underneath.
With most of Bond we saw the opposite, with them focusing on how cool spying is and not necessarily thinking about what it would really look like on a functional level and what Bond as a character would look like today.
Which is why I contend that the Craig films are probably Bond perfected. We're in a time where spying can actually be spying. Where it's not all cloak and dagger but is intelligent thinking, infiltration (yes) but also technology where necessary and can mix in military assets and violence when necessary.
The action of the 70s, 80s and 90s that didn't really fit with spying at the time, works well with modern spycraft on a more paramilitary level. As opposed to real spies that do a lot of boring work.
The 2000s and so on allow for a more "real" Bond, who is a person and a character rather than a tool to be used in the coolest way you can think of at the time. He becomes much more personable, relatable and understandable and it's a credit to the writing of the films.
Which is also why the Craig films impact so much. We're invested less in Bond's missions and more often than not, more in Bond's relationships with people and his relationship with the world around him, his struggles and where he wants to be as a person both personally and professionally.
So it's an odd mix. Connery's Bond is probably the closest to the Fleming Bond and the real way spying used to be back in the day with fantasy elements thrown in, but Craig's Bond is probably closest to the personable, character side of Bond and a look at who Bond could ACTUALLY be if we were talking about "real" spying.
Unless it was set in the 40s, we'll probably never get an accurate Fleming Bond because tonally it wouldn't work, but I think both Connery and Craig are perfect examples of James Bond as realistic characters.

@@30secondstomarsMBH mostly agree however I’d say Brosnan’s bond worked really well too, he was very cold it seems, the way he kills Elektra, kills henchman with an almost blank, routine expression etc. It’s just he was let down by some poor scripts after Goldeneye, otherwise a great bond who was definitely still human, just colder and more “doing the job”.
@@TheDiscardedImage It all depends where on the timeline the next Bond movies are. Remember that Craig's movies are like 'prequels', showing the man before he become who he is today. He was more gruff, lacked tack and wasn't his full signature suave self.
The Living Daylights pre-title sequence is one of my favourites. Also Dalton got rid of the silly camp stuff of the Moore era and because he was willing to do more stunt work there was much less background screen nonsense.

Saw new movie: No Time to Die, longest pre- title sequence ever? Such great stuff, however, wow moment for me it is incredible sound design, after Bonnd is Bombed, later in the sequence Bond speaks to Madeleine, saying they have 'All the time in the World' with a motif of that John Barry composition, James Bond is definitely shaken and stirred in this opening.
The opportunity to revisit "From Russia With Love is a reminder that James Bon'd's mortality isn't certain, since Grant kills a disguised agent who represents 007, in the pre-title sequence for that movie.

@@mrquirky3626 The science behind the invisible car is at least somewhat rooted in reality even if the actual technology to make it feasible doesn’t exist yet (ie, cameras on all sides projecting an image onto the opposite side).
But that kind of all goes out the window considering there’s a moment where Bond is somehow able to hide _behind_ the invisible car 😂

I admit I did give him short shrift, but I wasn't really talking about Dalton as Bond. I was just referring to the openings. And for me I just didn't have a huge amount to say in terms of the evolution of the sequences.

FWIW: I think the reason Spectre disappointed me so badly was the pre-title sequence was so good ...the film started out ok, but it stopped making any sense about half way through ...followed all the characters both changing personality entirely and loosing their minds.
If the film wasn't trying so hard to take itself so, so, seriously I'd swear Mike Myers had submitted the script for another Austin Powers outing, except all the Austin Powers films made far more internal sense from a plot, motivation, and characterisation perspective!
Let's face it, Austin Powers in Gold member has one of the best bond intros ever if not THE best.

I think there's a bit more to say about the dalton era a the living daylight established really well dalton as a new bond who did all the stunts the producer would allow him to do and license to kill has this really cool scene where they capture Sanchez's plane while flying ^^
I guess one of my favorite is goldeneyes like everything's pretty great the pierce brosnan introduction amazing stunt build of suspense importants elements for the plot and great action

Loved the Brosnan nuclear threat opening sequence
Again the registration number of the car... at 2:22 the Aston Martin has the registration plate: BMT 216 A ...but in some other Bond films and trailers, the plate reads BMT 214 A. I've seen these two registration plates a few times recently, probably because I've seen a few snippets of Bond films.
Did that traintop shooting inspire the scene in Revengeance, was it the other way around or were they instead both inspired by a similar scene in something even further back?

Pierce Brosnan had the best pre-title sequences. Just the right length before they just became indulgent in the craig era.
I got a good laugh out of the View to a kill pre title sequence, I was 13 and saw it in a theatre. It was silly because those sequences never needed to be anything more .
Tomorrow Never Dies is the best. I mean yes it was my first, but the epic firefight and explosion was really cool.

I always thought Quantum of Solace had to hold the opening until Bond killed the shadow Spectre…err, Quantum agent. I think it would technically be the longest pre-title sequence, but still…
It would be cool because that scene ends with him doing the classic turn around and shoot stance but then the exposition by Mr. white in between would feel out place, because the cold opens usually only reveal nothing or a premise

Here on November 25 2022 exactly one year after NO time to die.
Honestly the movie was a rushed mess but the opening was quite good,
It started with the villain safin murdering Mr White's wife and Madeline escaping from death, which makes the scene kind of a horror movie,
Then we have perhaps a better romantic bonding between bond and Madeline done here then the entire Spectre movie and it has the traumatic "we have all the time in the world" line and song, then it goes chaotic with Spectre bombing vesper lynd's grave which bond visits, then Chases him, and then it ends bond and Madeline breaking up and bond pushing Madeline to a train.
Well I think Moonraker's opening is one of the best, considering it's age. But Casino Royale is best for me. It's just, Bond.

Thunderball: Bond kills Jacques Bouvar, a member of SPECTRE.
A View to a Kill: Bond recovers a microchip from 003’s body. The chip is analysed later on.
The Living Daylights: Bond recovers the smiert spionam tag from 004, referred to later on in the film.
Tomorrow Never Dies: Henry Gupta (Carver’s henchman) is at the arms bazaar looking at the GPS decoder, which Bond is later shown and which is related to the sinking of HMS Devonshire.

i always thought that the jason bourne franchise had really weird editing like i count like every 2 seconds there was a camera cut to a new angle and i could never see what was going on
The problem is once the Bourne films came out Bond was instantly dated. So they decided to copy them which was a mistake.

I differ about Die Another Day. The film is atrocious and has plenty of problems, the pre-title sequence is not one of them.
