Now that the maestro has retired from the concert stage it is a great treat to still be able to enjoy this great artist at various points in his performance life. We get a chance to taste his great colorful and musical excellence. I was at the Manhattan school of music when he gave a talk and masterclass. I was at each concert he gave over the decades here in New York during my lifetime. The most colorful playing in classical guitar history!
Oh my, this is so special, Thank you selfTaughtGirl. Its only just started and i'm crying already. A chunk of me is gone now. He'll always be Sir Julian to me, if not to the Windsors.
Glad you "enjoyed" it. Read somewhere several years ago the five most important people for the guitar have been; Sor, Torres, Tarrega, Segovia and Augustine, and that now there is a sixth JB!
[02:01] Silvio Leopold Weiss - Passacaille [14:37] Johann Sebastian Bach - Suite BWV 996 [30:02] Humphrey Searle - Five op.61 [40:00] Manuel de Falla - Homenaje "Le Tombeau de Debussy" [43:55] Manuel de Falla - Danza del molinero [47:19] Malcolm Arnold - Fantasy op.107
A hidden gem on the finest guitarist and one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century. Also my great idol - ever since I first heard Julian Bream live in the early 1970s. Thanks for posting!
Thanks a lot for sharing this marvelous recital by Bream! wonderful programm and finally gave me the chance of hearing Julian Bream playing Arnold`s Fantasy!, which aparently he never recorded on studio. Priceless!
What a fantastic concert performance. The Arnold piece is a knockout (first time I've ever heard it - today!). I'm currently reading the book, A life on the Road. Well worth a look.
This is a real gift to me. Julian Bream is an amazing guitar player and this is a very rare and precious recording to me: I have the score of Searl's Five but I've never listened to any guitar player playing it! I'm so happy for this gift. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it. Don't think I've heard the Searle played by others but the Arnold seems to have caught on with several - I heard Sean Shibe play it in a concert a few months ago.
This is excellent, thank you for the upload. I have listened to it many times. There seems to be something new to appreciate on each hearing, including the pieces that were in his repertoire for a long time such as the Bach and the Weiss. The Searle and Arnold are especially enjoyable. The 'Five' are very polished, almost like a studio recording for a CD. I have listened to it with the score on several occasions and hard to find any fault, just a great performance. The Fantasy is superb aswell. Bream at his best.
You're right about painting; I always thought of music as linear until listening to Bream, in the same way you take in a painting as a whole, Julian paints a beautiful picture for us
@selfTaughtGirl - thanks for posting this. The sound quality of concert recording aren't as good as studio recording, but you never ever get the sense of the musician or the music from those. This is really appreciated because I never heard a live recording by Mr. Bream and it is like a different universe and very personal.
At his prime, without doubt the greatest classical guitarist ever. If only the younger players of today would just watch him and see how it's done. His right hand technique is perfect and that's why he was able to make such beautiful sounds. I'm not sure quality playing like his will ever be repeated. JB was self taught and worked it out for himself. Now students are being badly taught.
Interesante...
Hello there, I am presenting a lecture that includes Humphrey Searle's piece 'Five.' Are you absolutely certain that this is Bream peforming the piece?
This is like the conspiracy Moon landing people. How ridiculous! Not only can you tell from the tone of the guitar, and the sheer Breamness of the playing it would require active participation of a hundred or so people to make a fake, and the sourcing of an exceptional guitarist. LOL.

Feel free to add any of my stuff (esp Debussy) to any of your lists 🙂
He did get a CBE. Not really adequate, I agree.

Glad you enjoy them.

The book is a great read. I don't know if you've ever seen the "My Life in Music" DVD, he is quite a story-teller!
Grazie Maestro per la tua arte sublime ❣
Spectacular. Thanks for sharing this wonderful concert.
Glad you enjoyed it

Glad you enjoyed it and have eventually got to hear the Searle.
Thank you very much, this is a precious and almost unknow material of Maestro Bream.
His artistical skills, charisma and repertoire seems unlimited!
He was predestined by nature to play this instrument and be a genius. What an incredible life...

Cuánta razón tienes amigo Jules!
Very nice! Always look forward to your recital uploads. Bream playing the Searle and Arnold - very rare - excellent. Thanks!

thanks so much for this wonderful recording!
Welcome!
Simply brilliant!
What a brilliant archive. Well done for recording, keeping and uploading this.
Glad you are enjoying them.
Amazing.
He is the one - he is beyond technique - he manifests the beauty of the guitar like Botticelli painted a beautiful woman - his sound is wonderful
You're right about painting; I always thought of music as linear until listening to Bream, in the same way you take in a painting as a whole, Julian paints a beautiful picture for us
Glad you enjoyed it.
RIP Maestro
Bream was the best guitarist -- ever!
A really nice channel selfTaughtGirl, one of my most favored. Thanks for doing this.
Glad you enjoy listening to the recordings.
A beautiful picture of The Giant!
Its the one off the front of the Villa-Lobos Studies LP, I've always rather liked that cover (and the playing inside of course!).
+selfTaughtGirl Indeed. I discovered him with that recording.
And things changed forever...
wow!
Wundervoll

I guess the young always rebel, so maybe when the young are old the new young will rebel with Bream inspired playing!
Thank you self taught girl for this!!!!! I love JB! I love self taught girl!!!🙏❤🙏
You are welcome! JB was a bit special.
Tone is REMARAKBLE......classic Bream.....
yes on the contrary to many modern guitarist, in Bream you can hear at least the bass notes.
Does anyone know which guitar Bream is playing here? I suppose it was his Romanillos from 1973, wasn't it?
Gianfranco Cavallaro 10 dollars at any kmart.
Yes I am sure it was his 1973 Romanillos. The tone is absolutely extraordinary. Such depth and richness of colour.
Mall-Wart sells 'em for a fiver. All the tonal resources of a brick.
Yes, it's the Romanillos, without doubt. The beautiful singing quality of the third string is the giveaway.
Interesante...

Go to the Radio Times archive (UK TV/Radio listing magazine) and type Julian Bream Searle in the search box and see if what you find convinces or not.

Please look up the French word for Count...I can assure you it isn't Comet. Otherwise, a wonderful treat!
Indeed! Corrected, ta.
