A Classic Car Graveyard With Many Good Enough to Save!

- This turned out to be one of the most exciting days I’ve had!
Monika and I headed out for a morning coffee and bite to eat and stumbled upon, completely by chance, a classic car graveyard!
I have spoken to the land owner’s brother, and I have his phone number, so if any of you are interested in any cars, I can check with the owner if he’s happy for me to pass over his phone number for you. If my poor Spanish is correct, I think they could all be for sale.
The vintage cars I saw/could identify:
- VW Golf Mk1 , VW Golf Mk2 , 1980s VW Polo , Lada Niva , Seat Marbella, Classic VW Beetle (x10), 1970s/1980s Volvo, 1980s Mercedes, Toyota Landcruiser, VW Brasilia, Mk2 Ford Fiesta, and a few that I didn’t recognise!

Another great video Fred.
I think the cars you were asking about was the VE Variant. A great car.
What model Merc was that silver one you looked at at the beginning?
Thanks!🙂
Unfortunately I couldn’t figure out what model Merc it was. Let’s see if anyone knows- I’ll pin this comment🙂
@@FreddieDobbs If you mean @15:06 the cream and white ones are W123s the silver one is a W126.
There's no way of knowing which specific models, the ones on the left look pretty decent (although we don't know if the engines are still there) maybe between the two you could put one together.
VW 411
Monika puts up with you well dragging her around car dumps, my lovely wife looked at this and rolled her eyes 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Believe me, Monika was at her absolute limit!
Freddie & Monika - me and Julia been drinking as its freezing in THE UK lol.. blue MERC lol .. its beige / gold silver
Crazy looking Transit mod . A lot of work put into that ..
Never known anyone get so excited in a scrap yard.
Talking of small worlds, we were in Tenerife last week for a quick break. We came out of our apartment and there at the end of our street, a black bonnie, I said to Annemarie, look a bike like mine and then penny dropped and I said, it’s Freddie and Monica’s ! Thought we may see you down at the Pirata 👌 thanks to you both for videos we both love them and that vegan restaurant was something special. We also found a nice little place in San Isidro called Tasca nuestra on a residential back street but superb value meal. I too saw that man with his Mercedes every time we went past in a taxi. Good luck on your adventures. Nick and Annemarie
You leave the bike dirty and it starts every time. You clean it and it has issues.... there’s a lesson to be learned there 🤣🤣🤣
I’m glad you noticed that too, Andy!😆
Another amazing blog. Thank you . And a big thank you to Monika for shooting the video so ‘patiently’. 👍
Enjoyable, as always. Your bike is obviously missing all the lovely 'orrible damp cold and wet weather here, Freddie.
A special mention must to Monika who is a great photographer, a whizz at editing videos, and picks some great music to go with them.
Anyone else using ‘surface rust’ now as an answer to most things in everyday life?! 😀 I’m even using it in work meeting and got a nod from someone the other day! 😂😂
growing up in New Jersey in the 1970s, my family all had volkswagons 412, rabbit, scirocco & beetles
I’ve been told the red sports car is a VW SP2; only 11,000 ever made between ‘72-76, for the Brazilian market
Yes, there were some of them for rent, we called it volkswagen Brazilia
It's very common here in rural and poor areas. There is even a music called Brasília amarela, mentioning her
I am at only 2 minutes into the Video and you have put a smile on my face, the clean Bonnie is beautiful.
Thanks.
So happy to hear it!🙂
Love this video and your enthusiasm for old cars 🚗 thank you
I like your appreciation of the old CAR👌🏻🙂
I have the same idea about old car...
You are a Unique person.. in good way...thank you
👍🏻🙂
Oh man. What can I say? I really feel you mate, passion for those old better times, that sense of looking back and just smile at the 80s and 90s what a time! I just love watching your videos, on a Friday Eve, with a glas of wine and just enjoying the trip, the music, the scenes, the comments. I feel like I am there and it is so much fun! Awesome stuff you too! You make a difference in RUclips! Cheers to you! @-;--- love from down under.
That means a lot, thank you Andres!
And hello over in Australia🙂🇦🇺
Love the video, and as always your joy of the old cars. Lets face it they have something new ones will never have. Sad to hear the journey is coming to a close, but I guess another new adventure will be on the horizon.
The way you react to those old cars I would say "you need to get out more" Freddie, but then you are the one living in Tenerife whilst I languish in the rainy UK.;-)
I really did try my best to stay calm!😆
Some of us really enjoy your enthusiasm mate 👍
Freddie, how did I miss this when it came out? I adore your passion, what an ability to build a moment. Your enthusiasm is infectious . Thank you so much for sharing with us. I love El Medano.❤️
Loving the showroom fresh Bonnie, I can’t believe you have already been there for 4 months, great to see the magic screwdriver getting a little runout, and what a mental looking transit, this surely the channel that just keeps on giving, loving it Freddie
Brasilia is a 70's VW estate 👍
I remember in the 60's a VW Variant that also had the vents in the rear panels and sure it was slightly bigger.
Quick research tells me it was produced in Brasil and actually modelled around the Variant , used a Karmann Ghia chassis with a beetle powerplant.
yep you beat me to it ... they did a 1.8i flat fan ,ahead of there time mk 2 Variant
Thank you for sharing, Gerry! So interesting- and I think the vents were for the rear engine layout
Freddie had a Cargasm at the end of the vid .....🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I love your enthusiasm for bit of German surface corrosion! Great vid Fred.
You will need to relearn your ‘security protocols’ if you come back here though, you had me twitching when you left your bike running and walked away! 🤣
Lol
Really glad you enjoyed it!🙂
You’re so right- my bike would be pinched within a day if I acted like this in London!
Thanks guys another insightful video, interesting you now have the countdown to May, the series so far has been brilliant, but look forward to seeing what you bring us over the coming months. Well done, excellent video and editing as always, cheering up my Sunday
Loved the video Freddie, your enthusiasm is infectious but I think you were looking at those cars through rose tinted glasses. I'm with Monika, I just saw a lot of rusting wrecks.😅
I just love your vlogs and your enthusiasm can’t wait for the next one in your adventure 😃
Great video! Never even heard of VW Brasilia before, interesting little car.
Olá Freddie! O SP2 e a Brasília são carros produzidos no Brasil nos anos 70 e 80. Ótimos vídeos. Parabéns! Abraços .....
Brilliant video as always! Thank you !
nice movie i remember working on cars when I was about 7 to 8 we would help getting them ready for welding, we would roll them over on their sides and after the welder had finished we would clean and paint them. made an old soul very happy watching this movie
Fantastic- I love that cars and bikes bring back these little memorise. Thank you for sharing🙂
Your love of rusty scrap cars in a scrap yard is beyond me Freddie, but your adventures in Tenerife and love of bikes is compulsive viewing. Hopefully Barcelona is on the radar for your next adventure. Great video.
Monika also cannot understand why I like scrap yards either- I wish I knew!😆
Barcelona top of the list still🙂🇪🇸
Awesome video and awesome content can’t wait for the next video Thank’s Freddie and Monika
“That is a mark one Golf.... that - is - a - mark - one - Golf” 😬👍. Love that white Volvo as well, 240 I think, happy memories of driving a girlfriend’s parent’s car and saving a tank slapper away from a roundabout 😳😬. Thanks Fredika, really enjoy what you do.
Fred, the red sports coupe is a modified VW SP2, also brazilian made. It seems like it was adapted with fiberglass bumpers. It in its original form is gorgeous
Thanks Pedro- I just found out last night they’re extremely rare!
I was wondering if the wheel arches were add ons, so thanks for confirming🙂
Another great vlog. Really love your enthusiasm. 👍🏻
I’m with Monika what’s surface rust 😂I love your enthusiasm for these relics. Please don’t buy one you may find it has no engine! Cheers 🙂
It I had the money, I would’ve taken the Mk1 Golf or Polo I think! Probably luckily for me I don’t have the money!😆
The red one....
Absolute class ❤️
Great video, now I can see the excited face 😂. Great as always, cheers
I came from the Triumph ....Royal Enfield comparison test....awwww you picked the Triumph over the Enfield....care to rethink that....lol...That Volvo you liked I had one of those back more than 20 years ago...good solid car to drive...good feel to her...tough..was old then...
Hey Freddie, love the videos and dont want the bonneville to die. I'd get the rattling checked out if I was you. Could be just some external things loose but may be worth having the valve clearance checked. Would hate to see the whole bike blow up on you.
All the best and keep up the awesome videos. Love your enthusiasm and Monica's videography
That avocado and honey looks awesome 😋.
Great video 😁
Meyby have a look at the side stand switch Freddie, got a good soaking last trip. and remember Rust Never sleeps! Some of the roofs on the Beetles were well gone, inner wings solid and could be used as replacements for all the ones exposed to salt in the UK damp winters. most of the engines taken out, probably bought for them as quite a demand for them in camper vans etc.
“Bit of filler there” 😂😂 cool seeing icons like the mk1 golf!
You can't beat being outside/in a cafe with the bike.
So here I was in a coffee shop in Omotesando having my breakfast , the XLV outside on the pavement, the big air-cooled V-twin ticking. Perhaps it was the prospect of a morning stuck on my own in a stakeout in all this humidity, but I felt I could do with a chat to someone ...
One day yours isn't going to start using that method, Freddie.
I've seen you start it that way in the past in the UK and thought you had got it fixed. But what really intrigues me is how on earth you first figured out that was the way to start it?
My first ever car was a mk1 Golf when they were not that old. Agree with you about the 80's and 90's Mercedes. I love the fact you're a real petrolhead, not just for motorcycles or exotic cars, but for older "mundane" at the time stuff.
These are the cars I grew up with. My dad owned a Merc 280E and two Volvo 240's. My brother and mum a Beetle 1303S. So many nice memories. I currently have a Corrado VR6 sitting in the garage alongside my Bonneville.
@19:53 your heart is on the other side.
You can blame me for that one, I ’ve told him off for still doing it this way 😅
Some great cars. Hate seeing old cars parked up when some could be restored.
Hi Freddie and Monica.
Thanks for the videos, you are in a magnificent part of the world. The sight of clear blue skies at this time of the year may be too much for some of us, You are right you are most fortunate. where l am its been raining for about two weeks and its set continue for another two or so judging by the forecast. When its not raining its freezing.
Anyway surprised you are still doing the screwdrive trick. l thought before you went to Tenerife you would have had it sorted. l am surprised despite your visit to the mechanic that side it still has not been sorted. Anyway l think its a bit brave given how much you use the bike and some of the exotic and isolated places you go to. Should the bike refuse to start, things could get quite interesting.
Anyway please enjoy youre time there and looking forward to more amazing content.
I did try getting it fixed back in the UK (the mechanic had it for a week), but the problem’s returned. I’ll have to get the problem fixed once and for all now- it’s just painful knowing I could be without a bike for 2-3 weeks😫
@@FreddieDobbs Oh l see pity. Good luck with that.
@@FreddieDobbs if the relay has been replaced then it's a connection issue. either on the relay itself (unlikely ) the starter button, a wire break or bad earth .
if it's playing up now then that's the best time to get it checked as an intermittent fault is the hardest to trace but if it's constant then a auto sparks will find it in minutes. you don't need a bike garage . an auto electrician is best
Hi , you really know how to take a lady out for the day , for heaves sake Monica never get a house with a garden , as Freddie will fill it with old cars and call it work in progress . Magic Round about video, it only needs Dougle to appear from under an old car . Always fun to watch , take care and keep having fun .
I would’ve stayed a lot long but Monika had hit her limit of how long she could look at old cars for!😆
@@FreddieDobbs I bet she did , got to draw a line on the work life balance . Great videos .
Yes agree with comments time stamp 13:16 VW type 4, I believe saw off air cooled VWs
Not checked in in a while and thought you had bought a new bike !.Love the old Volvo, passed my test in a 145.
Your starter problem is almost certainly dirty connections. Try disconnecting all your starter connections and give the a good clean and spray with wd40, also spray some in the starter switch itself. I think the moral of this story is that regular cleaning is the first step of bike maintenance. Good luck, and love your vids.
Great video Freddie
Just a thought about the starting problem you have.
Although the bike is nice and clean outside I noticed quite a lot of dust on the electrical contracts your arcing across with the screwdriver.
I reckon using the WD40 to give the contacts a good clean up (and remove them first if you can) you may well have cured the problem mate. Worth a try anyway 👍
El VW brasilia era comun verlo en Tenerife. Bonito video Fredd y Mónica
You tell him Monika! Yes there is some great stuff there but lots of work!
Nice to see how the bike treats u after some tlc with cleaning. Obviously she/he/it prefers being left alone and dirty.
I think the green one is a Brazilian VW Passat (my father owned a 1978 one). The white car beside the sporty red one could be a SIMCA 1500.
Cheers from Algiers.
Those Brasilias were a pretty common sight in Tenerife in the 70s. VW had a huge market in the Canary Islands because they were fairly cheap due to the fact that could be bought almost tax free because of the special tax regime the islands have always enjoyed (that's why there were so many Mercs too). While the SP2 were not anywhere as popular as the bugs or the brasilias I remember seeing them on the road from time to time. Although those bugs you are looking at have been been stripped to the very last screw. You can find decent (rolling) ones for 3000 euros or so with TF or GC plates.
There is even a song featuring this car from a Brazilian band called Mamonas Assinadas: ruclips.net/video/kpuq1Obb4Dw/видео.html. Enjoy!
The very thing in action: ruclips.net/video/Jifmvd7pgl0/видео.html
This is fascinating- I did always wonder how there are so many premium cars (Mercs specifically) from the 1970s and 80s in Tenerife
@@FreddieDobbs The Islands have always had a special (lower) tax regime, they were qualified as "puerto franco", when Spain joined the EU the puertos francos were gone I think but they came up with an exception which meant that no import (or very low) taxes had to be paid when bringing stuff from a different country. This was supposed to help make up for the disadvantage islanders have in relation to mainland spaniards, the disadvantage being that everything (except for bananas and sun) had to be shipped in which meant added extra costs to pretty much everything. In the end living in Canarias is way cheaper than anywhere else in Spain, and the people and the weather are nicer too (that shower you got the other day came straight from England ;). Boat and plane tickets are about half the price for islanders too. See it for yourself, gas (95 petrol) is around 1.50€ in Madrid today, how much is it in TF?
Today 95 petrol, 1.15€
08:38 ox blood I think Freddie. Love the video mate - smart riding gear today 🤜🏼
Ox blood- that’s it! It was on the tip of my tongue
Try cleaning and then really tightening the earth wire connection. Just worked for my quad bike…and no court would convict Monika if she just lost it and bludgeoned you in that scrapyard
Thanks Rod, I’ll try this👌🏻🪛
I do agree🤣👩🏻⛏
Last time we were in the Canaries 80s to 90s every taxi was the old Mercs your referring too.
Great video 👍 That Red sports car looks like a VW (Brazil) SP2
Looks like you need a new starter relay but first I'd try simply cleaning those dirty wire connections.
Ah great- I’ll try cleaning the wires! Starter relay already changed, but I’ll look at the wires. Thanks Lee🙂
VW Brasilia were produced in VW factory in Brazil until the 90's in the same plant that produced the Beetles
Cracking vid but poor Monika! Dragging her around some rusty old scrap yard... OK so it's surface rust I promise ya! 🤣🤣🤣.... was that a smurf at 10.23 ? Do I win a prize? Was it even a competition? 😂😂. Thanks for another 20 minutes of entertainment.
Love the music
That was a good video Freddie. But I just had to laugh when you called you bike stupid, I ride a 1948 Harley flathead kick start only you can start your triumph with a screwdriver. I got to kick till I pass out lol
Lol surface rust! Brilliant. Rust is rust Freddie! 🤣 you’d be the perfect used car salesman!
Another fascinating video, love the musical scores you use , they really resonate with what your filming, as for the cars , I am pretty sure the vehicles with the vents in the side are Brazilian manufactured VW's called a Brasilia (Type 321) they were also built under license in Mexico and Nigeria, the red sports car is a VW SP2 also manufactured in Brazil (early 70s)
Thank you Ian!🙂
@@FreddieDobbs Love your channel, since I discovered it I've been playing 'catch up' on all your 'vids' , really impressed with all of them , its now my default channel at the weekend , coffee, biscuits and several rounds of Freddie and Monika.
VW Beetles were made in mass in Mexico and Brazil until recently. In fact if you ever visit Acapulco in Mexico then just every taxi is a VW Beetle, hundreds of them!
I remember 7 of us in a seat marbella in southern spain!!.
🤣🤣🤣
Freddie, you have an eye for Diamonds in the rough ! And I mean rough ! 😆
Some rare beasts there worth saving Fred!
Aren’t there!🤩🤩
Hey Fred, 70's Volks Variant Brasilia estates (Brazil made obvs), minty green one behind looks like the original Passat. 70's Volvo 144 which we love! Rare red SP2 sports thingy based on the Variant, again made in Brazil. That saloon at the back looks like a Moskvich maybe? The Indian one could well be a Hindustan Ambassador. Proper goldmine you have there! And rust-free Beetles! 😆
The 'Indian' car was a British Hillman Minx!
Please Freddie , DON T drop your side cover face down on the road . Plastic scratches so easily . Keep your beautiful bike looking looking beautiful.
Beetles if i remember right 1302s from early 70s....first vw beetles that had mcphearson strut front suspension ...not like first ones on torsion front suspension....
Great video and what a place to stumble across! The white car under the trailer may be a NSU. The van is a VW LT. They make great camper conversions.
I'd save the Niva out of all those.
That van definitely isn’t an LT.
It’s a Nissan Ebro 👍🏼
I have a weird soft spot for the Niva- I’d love to save that👌🏻
Van is an Ebro (brand).
LOL..........me around vintage HiFi :)
Another fun episode. The avocado sandwich looked very nice but those cars were awful. The Volvo would never pass the MOT, keep rust off the road.🤠
I don't think I've ever had a junk yard video tour. I guess there's nothing new under the sun! :>)
The beetles seem to be early seventies see the crescent shaped vent behind the rear side windows
Hi Freddie i think the old Indian looking car is a late fifties early sixties Hillman Minx , I'm with Monica surface rust lol.
Ahhhh thank you David- I had no real idea on what the Hillman was!
You're a typical bloke Freddie. When the bike wouldn't start you called the bike stupid. Nothing to do with the owner not maintaining it properly eh?🤣🤣🤣👍
Loving the videos Freddie, keep them coming. 👍
The most annoying thing is I know I’m wrong; deep down I know I don’t look after the Bonneville, and I deserve this🪛🏍😫
@@FreddieDobbs Don't worry Freddie you're no different to a lot of us who would rather be riding our bikes than working on them.
👍😃
Those VW's you didn´t recognize are "BRASILIAS"...Those were originally developed in Brazil (figures..) but also menufactured in Mexico. VW Chassis and drivetrain, but a great open, and airy body.
Freddie - do you use a battery tender? The connection can also be used for a very handy battery starter that will boost your battery to start it. At least that will then get you to a garage! I find the batteries are affected a lot by change in weather/temperature. Very handy bit of kit to have and has saved me on many occasions. Great vblogging again - really enjoyable.
Ahhhhhh I’ve just received a battery tender from a client so I’ll try it out. Thanks Patrick🙂
VW SP2. Very rare!
The blue car with the beetles is a called a VW variant, think of an estate car but with the flat 4 beetle engine under the rear luggage space
The ones with the louvers sure look like the VW 412 that was sold here in the U.S. Perhaps Brasilia is what it was known as in other markets.
I’m with you Freddie. I’m the dreamer and my wife is the realist. Good fun. Hope you get your Bonnie sorted. She’s earned it.
Yes it’s an VW SP2 Freddie…. The SP2 is a sports car developed by Volkswagen for the Brazilian market, and produced from 1972 to 1976. That one’s been altered… badly 👍
Red car is a vw sp2, a Brazilian sports car. The estates are variants or 411's.
Freddie - don't do it - listen to Monika 😉🤣🤣
I’m trying my best not to!😆💭🚗🚗🚗
@@FreddieDobbs do you mean you are trying your best not to buy those cars, or trying your best not to listen to Monika? 😉
Another great video. I thought that Brasilia was a Lancia. ???
I think Monika was more at home with the episode when she selected the pink Mecedes in pefect condition at the Tenerfie car show! They don't call the collection of rusty heaps a graveyard for nothing and restoring any of these would be very long and expensive job. In terms of restoring perhaps the Bonneville needs a revisit to the dealer for a look at the starter relay...I've owned one of those old Volvo's (244DL) which handled like a pig but ws othewise fairly reliable.
Sorry to say Freddie but I think they are to far gone mate I hope you didn't get to carried away with the idea of restoring any of them ,although I am sure Monica will have brought you back down to earth on that score : D ,Brilliant watch I do like a scrap yard myself actually : ) nice one .
Monika had to drag me out of there in the end!😆
I’m glad it’s not just me- I LOVE scrap yards!🙂❤️🚗🚗🚗👌🏻
Freddie the red car and the others with slats ? V.W's lol ... or this RED one is rare maybe ... did u look inside at the engine as I would know if you post that at a later ate .... keep up the excellent work M & F
The pound is stronger for sure. But not “so strong”. When it reaches the levels of pre-June 2016 I will be happy. Something happened back then which I can’t really recall
Ahhhh you’re right. I remember back in 2006 when I used to go to Italy a lot; £0.50 was roughly €1!😳
@@FreddieDobbs indeed!
Don't blame the bike Freddie!
I cannot argue with this- I know you’re right, Chris!
cool
Hi Freddie. You where outside my favourite hotel Arnaus Del Mar. I have stayed 5 times and looking forward to going back. The place is really good and the staff are really friendly.
Have you been there?
Never been or even heard of it, but I’ll save this if anyone needs a recomendation🙂
@@FreddieDobbs Sorry Freddie I miss spelt it. It should of been Arenas Del Mar which is at the eastern end of El Medano. You where in the front parking area at the beginning of your last vlog.
It looks better, but Freddie's Triumph needs the "Full Fillingham".
I can’t argue with that- I have a lot to learn!🧽
