  • Watch as I repair this high quality porcelain Flora Danica basket weave bowl by Royal Copenhagen. There aren't a lot of pieces to this repair but is interesting none the less.
    Big thanks as usual to Ellen Wight for the camera work and for her otherwise helpful assistance.

    Flora Danica has world renown - it has been in the Royal Copenhagen range for over 200 years. I had the privilege of a private tour of the Flora Danica division at Royal Copenhagen in 1979. All of the artisans had many years of experience at RC. A dinner plate in FD would have had 12,000 brushstrokes before completion.
    HM Queen Elizabeth II has a set of this china at Sandringham. It gets used at Christmas time. The set arrived in England 🇬🇧 when Princess Alexandra of Denmark married The Prince of Wales in 1863, as part of her dowry.
    Diana Vreeland had a dessert set in Flora Danica - Tallulah Bankhead quipped "Dahhhling, you could serve shit on these plates, and it would taste good". Ms Oprah Winfrey claims this as her dinnerware pattern.
    World class and perennially popular.

    Thank you so much for putting the Hxtal name up so I could buy some. I could NOT figure out how to spell it so I could find it. You are so generous to share your expertise with us. Thank you so much. Could you explain how to do the hot box part? If Hxtal is used, you have to have one, correct?
    I have mentioned this before in another text, but I have an antique ewer-shaped piece of Doulton which I am going to repair. Now I think I can figure out how to do it. Thank you again.

      You are welcome! Thanks for the compliments. No, a hot box is not required for using Hxtal, but it is helpful. I'll try to address this in a future video. Good luck with your repair.

    Hey sir, thank you for another great lesson. Is there any alternative for the Hxtal Nyl-1 pond? I can't organize it in Egypt and the available clear epoxy ponds are very thick and dry to quickly.
    Thanks again

    Mr Martin thanks for sharing all this magic, i was wondering, the final layer on the retouch areas is acrylic? you don't apply a final layer of glazing on top? so acrylic doesn't go of? my acrylics on pottery turn mat, yours are shiny. You the best. Even if you dont answer thanks for all.

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  2 года назад +1

      I almost always finish off with a clear, glossy, catalyst based acrylic "glaze" to protect the finish. Usually 2 to 4 coats of this (Sylmasta brand "Cold Glaze Pro II") which is then sanded with micro mesh up to about 8000 grit then I use a polishing compound to bring it up to a glass-like finish.

    And yet another wonderful repair. I have a large antique French basin that needs repair. How do I go about getting an estimate? I live in Connecticut. Is shipping back and forth possible or advisable?

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  2 года назад

      Thanks for the compliment.
      I can give you an estimate based on what I can tell from an emailed photo or two. contact me at my email address: mscherer@tesserak.net. I need to know the approximate size of the object and whether you have all the pieces. Also include your phone number please.
      I live in California. Shipping ceramics these days is a form of gambling. If it's not a delicate object it has a chance.

    Hi Martin, I’m desperately trying to find a cold glaze to apply to a restoration I’ve made. The only one available in europe that I van find is an Epoxy resin that cannot (by any means) be airbrushed. I’m really looking after purchasing the Sylmasta product that you use but, although the product itself is not cheap, they charge a 50£ shopping fee (in top of what I’ll need to pay custom fees). Basically, it will cost me 200£ for 1L… It’s been days now that I’m looking for a substitute product that can be airbrushed but honestly I cannot find any. Would you please have any piece of advice as I’m losing hope right now? Will a glossy varnish do the trick? Thanks a lot for your precisous advice. Cheers

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  2 года назад +1

      That's a tough one. I used to pay those kinds of prices when I had to get Cold Glaze from Sylmasta in England. Now they have a U.S. distributor. I've had others who can't get Cold Glaze shipped to their countries tell me they are trying automotive finishes. That sounds promising because they are super tough, don't discolor, can be polished up to a high gloss and are made to be sprayed. I'd look in that direction. Sorry I can't recommend any brands. No direct experience there. Good luck to you.

    what is bonding strength of the Hxtal? Do you use on Ceramic, pottery, clay, etc or just porcelain?

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  2 года назад

      I don't know the actual numbers on the strength of the bond. It is extremely strong once cured (fully cured after 7 days). I use it on glass as a bond and as a fill. I use it on non-porous ceramics and stone. It can be used as a bonding agent that will wick into cracks in glass. It's not easy to work with. Long curing time.

      @@marsgitar Thanks for the info. I am dealing with very heavy and thick clay pottery sculpture that was fired at a high temperature (2700) but I don't know if you would consider it non-porous and ok for Hxtal. If not, what would you suggest ? Again thank you for your help

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  2 года назад +1

      @@okiesandman3479 As a porosity test, put a drop of water on the edge of a broken area of the clay vessel. If the water soaks into the clay, it's porous. If it just sits there, it's not porous. I use Hxtal on non-porous material. Also for Hxtal to work well, the pieces need to fit closely together. For porous material I'd use Elmer's white glue, or epoxy paste.
      For bonding something thick and heavy I probably would go with a name-brand clear epoxy paste from the hardware store. 5 min. epoxy would be too fast. Get a slower cure epoxy. Clean up squeeze-out before it hardens. The Elmer's and also work OK on porous materials. Good luck to you!

    What brand of brushes do you use

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  2 года назад

      I use good artist paint brushes from just about every major manufacturer. I also use cheap craft store brushes. The brush doesn't matter as much as what you can do with it. Use good brushes; you won't regret it.
