    I've been searching for this tutorial for two days. Thank you Colin. Not the first time you've saved my life. I've been trying to export a feature film to go to a QC company for distribution, and they want a 4444 with 8 mono audio tracks: L R C LFE Ls Rs LT RT. From what i understand this is a standard way to deliver features these days. Premiere makes it literally impossible to figure out.The channel output assignments being ganged as 1&2, 3&4 etc leads to not 8 discreet tracks as they are in the sequence, but four pairs of stereo tracks (if you don't pan). My test clips kept failing QC because I hadn't intuited that I needed to pan all tracks (including C) left and right in the sequence setup,which is completely counter intuitive. I have a feeling that will solve the problem. THANK YOU!

    Hi, Colin. Great tutorial. In the description of the video above, you provide a DropBox link to your finished "Surround_Test.mp4" file, which is super useful. That particular output file uses Dolby 5.1. When I import that file into the current version of Premiere Pro (v24.0.0), the audio comes in as 6 mono tracks. By any chance, do you have a version of "Surround_Test.mp4" that is exported with one of the other 5.1 formats that is currently supported by Adobe, so that the file imports as a 5.1 audio track? That would be useful to me. Many thanks!

    Thanks a lot Colin. This video was very helpful. But I have a question. Towards the end around 17:38 you show the track A8 having a plus button which is then used to get the panned sequence . I don't see any such track when in my project when I follow what you've said. Any help on that?

    At 15:35 you pan left then right....and then left and right again....and then left and right again. Isnt that middle left to right sending all of your center audio to the left and your LFE to the right? Shouldn't you leave channels 3 and 4 center?

    Mr. Smith, thank you for all of your great tutorials! I have a really dumb question as newbie to 5.1 mixing in Premiere (I have cc 2019). I have an M-Audio interface to which I have my two studio monitors attached. Here's the dumb question. Can I use 5.1 surround headphones and hear the 5.1 mix simply by plugging the headphones into the headphone jack on my audio interface? Does 5.1 decode through standard 1/4" output to a device (i.e., headphones) that can decode a 5.1 file? Thanks so much for your time!

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  5 лет назад +1

      Headphones are stereo only, so no 5.1. You need 6 separate outputs from your interface and 6 separate speakers to be able to monitor 5.1 sound.

    Hey Colin. Thank you so much for this super informative and helpful video. I'm showing a short video in my local cinema next week Friday, and I'm playing with the thought of making a 5.1 mix instead of showing only Stereo. I have a couple of "audio swells", lower-end frequency sounds just like you hear in big blockbuster films. Are those sounds only meant to be played on the LFE, you think? Or would I be well off, playing them from lets's say the 3rd Ch, center?
    If the low drone-like humming sounds can only be truly felt by placing them in the LFE, should I go for your second option shown in the vid? (making a 6 Ch master, then throwing the nested seq into the 5.1 track). Tusen takk, muchos gracias, enkosi kakhulu - that's Thank You's in Norwegian, Spanish and Xhosa!! Hope it'll persuade you into answering my question : ) and THANKS!

      Sorry, I don't have any recommendations for hardware. Anything with multiple outputs will work. Most professional audio interfaces have 1/4" or XLR outputs that do not carry power so they plug right into active speakers.

    • @horizonhunterproductions
      @horizonhunterproductions 3 года назад

      Cheap recommendations would be a surround sound system, or home cinema system. I monitor using the _Sony BDV-E2100_ system as it has great sound for its pricerange. Please note that it only has 5.1 input through its Toslink connection. But I assume there are plenty options out there that do support better systems.
      I think a system you plug in to your computer using USB would be the best for you, but I don't have a specific product to recommend you yet. However do get in touch with me if you want to look into a good system in your price range!

For example, the person who has a 5.1 sound system at home should be able to activate this option and use it. 5.1 sound system should be able to activate the stereo sound in the same file and continue. I don't know how to do this, it is not found in any healthy source.

      Adobe says "any audio hardware with frequency above 44000 Khz are accepted in Premiere Pro," but I see often in the forums that not audio interfaces work well (i.e. some get locked by PP)

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  6 лет назад

      Premiere Pro uses the drivers that are installed by the audio interface and the operating system. If you can see the interface in the operating system, then Premiere Pro will see it too.
      If you want my recommendation then I'd say use anything from Steinberg, Focusrite, MOTU, and stay away from Behringer or M-Audio.

    • @m.y.a.111

      Audio files could be mono or stereo. Then you put them in the tracks and you assign the tracks exit like L, R, C, LFE, etc.

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  5 лет назад

      You can't do that in the Timeline. You need to export out a new audio file that is set to 5.1, import it back in and place it on the Timeline.
      It won't change anything thought; the 2 tracks in a 5.1 Sequence will sound the same as 2 tracks in an exported 5.1 audio file.

    Another LFE work around; Edit > Edit in Adobe Audition > Sequence... Once your project is in Audition, open the track panner panel. There is an "LFE Only" button that will isolate the LFE. Make sure to turn up the LFE percentage on the bottom slider or you won't hear anything. I know this is a Premiere Pro tutorial but I hope that helps.

    @videorevealEd I need your help. I'm using Adobe premiere cc 2017. I followed your instructions and opened a 5.1 six audios but I'm having two challenges. 1. There's no auto pan in all the channels just like yours. It only has a master pan. 2. Second problem is, I can't insert any audio into the 6 channels. I tried using mono audio files and it didn't work... Pls help me asap. I'm desperate 😭😭

    • @VideoRevealed

      You'll only see the surround panner if the track is mono. Right-click on the left side of the Timeline and choose Add Track. Pick mono. Now drag your media to that track.
      Also, why are you using 2017? Update to 2020 for tons of new features, better stability and more.

    But wouldn't it be better anyway when you do it with 6 mono tracks? Then you can asign manually what should be put out on the different channels... because I do not know where I could get music in native surround?! Or did I get something wrong?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  5 лет назад

      Yes, except for the LFE (subwoofer) which you can't isolate with a mono track. That's why it's better to have a properly mixed 5.1 track; which you can produce in Audition!

      You need some type of audio interface that has 6 separate outputs. As long as your operating system can access all those outputs, then Premiere Pro can too. There are many interfaces out there, many support USB so they work on macOS and Windows.

    EDIT: The surround sound video file shows up as surround in Premiere Pro CC but it only shows one panner for the 5.1 sound. I tried unlinking/disconnect the sound from the video in the timeline as well as bringing in the individual mono .WAV files of the 5.1 mix I made in FCP X and no dice. I have tried various methods you showed and made sure I played with the track options which are perhaps what I am doing wrong. Frustrating
    I'm pretty frustrated but I really love your channel and hope you grow faster! Very clean and simple and to the point! Often when I am frustrated with an Adobe app and I search for solutions on RUclips I get short when someone blabbers on for 10 minutes before showing the 1 minute fix! >:( Still can't figure out why Premiere won't show me the panners. I used to love mixing surround sound in Final Cut Pro X as it is much more visual but I had to ditch it for a Windows Workstation (3900X, PCIe SSD's, 1060GB) and a really nice Razer Blade 14 (5900HX, RTX 3060, 1TB PCIe SSD). Will premiere not allow you to do multichannel mixing if you don't have some sort of multitrack device or fox multichannel "device" in the computers sound settings?
    As much as I love perfecting every aspect of my video from cinematography aspects like lighting, glass, etc. to editing LOG video the picture is only half the show! I have found my really short shorts I make just screwing around impress people more when I do a proper 5.1 mix regardless of whether I am able to present it in 5.1 I have always found my 5.1 and even 7.1 mixed stuff mixes down to stereo lovely!

    But I want that all the speakers diffuse all the sound all the time. I just want to keep the stereo image in the cinema. It's an immersive piece of sound.
    What's the best way to do it? 1 stereo track for front left and front right. Then 1 stereo track for back left and back right. Then what do I do with the center and the sub?

    • @VideoRevealed

      5.1 mixing isn't done like that. There is no way to easily convert stereo to 5.1, you need the original media and it needs to be mixed properly. Just sending the same signal out all speakers will not sound good.

Is there going to be any issues while screening? I haven't worked with Dolby Atmos so I really don't know. I would guess that the audio needs to edited in a program that supports Atmos and exported out to the format the theater screens at which would be any number of formats.
      It might be worthwhile to source out a professional audio house to guarantee your results.
