Been dealing with these modeling inconsistencies for over a year, insane how I put up with this for so long until now, Thanks for the tutorial, this helped a bunch!
What I didn't do to avoid offsetting when modeling in Blender?! Never knew this kind addon existed, and how useful and packed with features it is. Thank you!
Hey Elyasaf, I feel your pain! This was one of the main reasons why I did a whole video on just this topic and I found that not many blender tuts speak of using modifier or simple little addons to bring such power to a semi-precision workflow. With a bit of luck offsets wont be that much of a pain form now on. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
what an incredible way of offsetting you taught me...thank you I especially love the solidify flip normal technique. also, the midpoint snaping on measuring tool,
Another nice tutorial, I'm learning a lot. I wonder when will you upload a practical example applying all of these techniques into one real proyect, like 3d printing a knop or something. I'm also very interested to know how you make screw holes in Blender.
@haissake Here's an animated gif of how to create holes with threads. I used the Bolt Factory and Bool tool ad-don blender.stackexchange.com/questions/183248/boolean-and-combining-objects-for-3d-printing/186010#186010
Hey Haissake, So glad you enjoyed the video and speak of the devil you'll never guess what the next mini top up video will be (How to do a screw hole) plus the last video will be covering a 3D printed Knob and a small laser cut thing 😂
Hey there... trying to follow your example here but I stumbled into a problem. At 01:44 you do a Ctrl-Shift - (minus) and intersect the plane with the object. On my mac laptop I only get a zoom in. What am I missing? :) Thanks
Hey One TooMany, Hmmm sounds to me that you might be having some mac shortcut conflicts. But no worries, the bool tool addon also has a menu in object mode. If you take a look on the right had tool bar when visible (N) to see it you will see something called "edit" if you have the bool tool addon active. Click in there and you will see all the objects that are done via these bool shortcuts but in button form. I have that helps. 🤓
Any idea why doing a boolean difference into a plane doesn't seem to work unless the solver in the modifier is set to Fast instead of Exact? (Blender 2.91) Love the tutorials!
I have a feeling that this is due to there not being a closed object to Bool from. Try extruding the plain a little first and then do the opation and then just use the geo what you need.
What is your approach to determining the offset for a project printed with a 3D printer. Let's say a box with a lid. One thing is printer accuracy. But I believe you always need a little offset or otherwise the lid won't fit or be too snug. Also the offset should change with box size, doesn't it? Bigger boxes need more offset, right? Let's say the printer prints absolutely accurate...what would the formula (dependent on box size) be to calculate the necessary lid offset so it fits nicely?
i made a few figures wich are no problem to print in one part... BUT i wanted singe parts so i added connectors and used boolean to cut them out... after printing the thing i noticed everything is too tight... how can i make these simple square connectors fit? i was thinking about just making one part a lil bit bigger to cut out ... but is there a easy way to use bolean to cut bigger or smaller holes? i read about adding solidify but when i add solidify my cuts look like sht...
I think the reason the measured distance of the solidify modifier was slightly higher than 0.35mm was because you're measuring the hypotenuse of the triangle whereas you seem to think you're measuring the vertical leg of the triangle. The cylinder is slightly shorter when using the solidify method than when using the offset-extrude method, right?
Hey Craig, you see I thought that too. I did do quite a few test's before doing the video and every time I was getting different results. And yes using the solidify method will give you a slightly shorter cylinder. The only other was is slightly destructive which is to do a constrained plain scaling. I've had mixed results do this but I can work quite well if you use CAD transforms to achieve this result.
is it possible to offset the whole object, like lets say the whole object (not just the hole you selected in the video). will I be able to make an outer shell for the whole object to fit in using those methods?
so at 1:44 when i press ctrl + shift + - it does not cut the plane, it just makes a few weird lines on it and i have no idea why, i tryed if the cutting work properly on the object and it works fine, but the plane is having troubles to be cut, even by some other objects
Hey Tonda, this sounds to me that you are in blender 2.9. As cutting a plain in 2.9 is no longer really possible it needs to have some thickness. I would suggest you go through my new course for 2.9.ruclips.net/p/PL6Fiih6ItYsXzUbBNz7-IvV7UJYHZzCdF

HI Thajmul, ok i think I understand. Well I think that the offset is only going to work on one edge loop at a time as I have a feeling it uses the normals of the edge. This tool works only half the time. The other half, for whatever reason the offset goes constrained at an angle, even when working in plan view. It's very inconsistent
